I have a 28 year old black son. This could’ve been my son, your son, nephew, brother, or friend. I refuse to watch the videos. I have seen enough throughout Black History and media. To be frank, I cannot even keep up with all the deaths as a result of police killings. I often wonder what more can we do. I’ve prayed. I’ve protested. I’ve folded into my career by elevating important topics to help dismantle and disrupt systemic oppression and inequities in hopes that our youngest children can have a better future. But, I know there is so much more to do. In case you’re wondering, what can you do: continue praying for our children’s protection; check in with your Black friends/colleagues/staff; educate yourself on anti-racism, biases, systemic issues, and police brutality; support and take action for sustained efforts in your workplace and community; lift up peer intervention; demand accountability and change in police brutality/culture. (Side Note: Yes, I’m aware that the killing of Tyre Nichols was committed by Black officers. This does not surprise me considering the police culture, systemic oppression in our country, and the role media plays. A suspension/expulsion preschool study noted, white and black teachers were harder on black boys.) There is a lot of conditioning through schooling, socialization, and media about anti-black messaging. So, I will pray for his family. It starts with you. #tyrenichols #changestartswithyou #changestartswithin #policebrutality #policekillings #antiblackracism #ipray #stillpraying #sayhisname #anothervictim https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn8ba21rooL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The @justicecommittee organized a vigil on February 3, 2024, marking the somber 25th anniversary of the murder of Amodou Diallo, a Black West African migrant & student who was fired upon 41 times by the NYPD.

____________
📰Story via @abc7ny abc7ny.com The 25th anniversary of the death of Amadou Diallo at the hands of police brought power players in the name of police reform to the Bronx for a vigil.
Diallo's mother was joined by other New York City mothers whose sons were killed by police, including #GwenCarr, the mother of #EricGarner.
Amadou Diallo, an unarmed 23-year-old was killed in a hail of 41 bullets on February 4, 1999, by plainclothes police officers. The officers claimed they mistook Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea, for a suspect. When they demanded he show his hands, police opened fire on Diallo when he reached into his pocket for his wallet, claiming they thought he was reaching for a gun.
Diallo was shot to death as he was trying to run into his own building for safety.
The officers, Sean Carroll, Richard Murphy, Edward McMellon, and Kenneth Boss - part of the notoriously brutal Street Crime Unit were all acquitted of charges, including second-degree murder. This sparked public outcry.
Now, there is still an outcry for police accountability - most recently for the #HowManyStopsAct, passed to increase transparency as community leaders vow to never forget those unjustly killed by police, including Diallo's mother, #KadiatouDiallo.
"He had dreams and he was about to achieve his dreams. His dreams were cut short by 41 bullets. We went through a lot of situations including the trial, the acquittal and then I said to myself, I want to pick up," said Diallo's mother. "I want to pick up Amadou, dust him off, and give him back his story. This history must never be forgotten. This history is our history."
Speakers say they continue to push to continue the legacy of Diallo because lessons have not been learned.

I Wonder If Elijah McClain Had A Future
I Wonder If Elijah McClain Had A Future
I wonder if Elijah McClain had a futurePerhaps he’d grow out of his shellFrom behind the mask, invite others into his own world Or maybe not. Because I think he was perfect. The way he was.And the world thought so, too. I wonder if Elijah McClain had a futureAt 23, very much like me,I wonder if he was formulating his big bad plan to take over the worldIn the future. As we all do, as we’re all…

The War on Drugs is not metaphorical, and actually consists of a set of undeclared conflicts fought domestically by the police against the general population and its irregular fighters, and internationally by US intelligence services in conjunction with the various fascist dictatorships that the US establishes and maintains around the world.

#BREAKING #TheseMfHere Credit to @shaunking : I kid you not, this white professor at the University of Texas San Antonio CALLED THE POLICE on a young Black woman FOR PUTTING HER FEET UP ON THE BACK OF A CHAIR during class. Literally, everybody there saw it. Posted about it. Yes, that’s all that happened. And the police came and forced her to leave the class. #thisisamerica #thisisamerikkka #amerikkka #bluekluxklan #policebrutality #policekillings #whiteprivilege #whitesupremacy #whitesupremacists #JemelRoberson https://www.instagram.com/p/BqJk5Osnzkr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p332zghoferb

⚖️#ArtIsAWeapon #SayHerName #AtatianaJefferson #JusticeForTay Thinking of her family - especially her nephew - who will spend another holiday without her, and hoping they feel some relief now that her killer has been found guilty and sentenced to prison. Portrait by #artist @lmurphyarts • • Via @CNN and @NYTimes - Former Texas police officer Aaron Dean, was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison on December 15, 2022, following his manslaughter conviction for shooting Atatiana Jefferson in her own home in October 2019. The 38-year-old White former Fort Worth police officer, had faced up to 20 years in prison for killing Jefferson, a 28-year-old Black woman. The sentence comes more than three years after the deadly encounter in which Dean and his partner responded to Jefferson's house around 2:25 a.m. on October 12, 2019. They arrived at her house after a neighbor called a non-emergency police line to report that her doors were open. They did not announce themselves as police at the home, and Dean then fatally shot through a bedroom window at Jefferson, who had been playing video games with her nephew Zion Carr. Now 11, her nephew testified at the trial that he thought it was a dream when he saw his aunt collapse. “She was crying and just shaking,” said Zion... Jefferson's relatives read impact statements after the term of 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison was announced. #PoliceViolence #PoliceKillings #BlackLivesMatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CmkEGNOPrmI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Absolutely disgusting. Kim Potter, Daunte Wright’s killer, has been sentenced to less jail time than Crystal Mason, a Black woman who tried to vote because she didn’t know her criminal record took from her the right to vote. Kim Potter’s tears somehow moved this asshole judge to ask for empathy for Potter, who showed none for young Daunte. This is white supremacy at work. I’m sure Crystal Mason, mother of three, cried a ton when she was jailed again for voting and taken from her three children. Why don’t her tears matter? #Repost @thenastywomanclub with @make_repost ・・・ Former police officer Kim Potter has been sentenced to two years in prison for killing 20 year old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop in 2021. Daunte's family say they feel cheated by the justice system and have criticised the judge's insufficient sentencing period. Judge Regina Chu says we need to "empathise with Ms. Potter's situation." She claims it was a "mistake that ended tragically," and that "she never intended to hurt anyone." "This is the problem with the justice system today," says Daunte's mother Katie Wright, "white women’s tears trumps justice."Daunte's father Arbuey Wright says he was completely stunned by the sentencing. "I walk out of this courthouse feeling like people are laughing at us because this lady got a slap on the wrist and every night we are still waiting around crying, waiting for my son to come home," he says.  . . I know it’s mental health awareness month, but white supremacy doesn’t give a fuck about black folks’ mental health so I hope to edumacate you a bit and bring more awareness to what goes on in a black person’s mind/life in a time like this. Nonetheless, take care of yourself. And don’t forget to take a step back so a black person can take a step forward. @sircharlesthepoet
