Silver Lining: New Evidence Shows How COVID-19 Has Improved Global Air Pollution Amid Coronavirus Economic Slowdown
Tumblr media
NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) pollution monitoring satellites have detected significant decreases in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over China. There is evidence that the change is at least partly related to the economic slowdown following the outbreak of coronavirus.
The maps show concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, a noxious gas emitted by motor vehicles, power plants, and industrial facilities. The maps show NO2 values across China from January 1-20, 2020 (before the quarantine) and February 10-25 (during the quarantine).
The data was collected by the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on ESA’s Sentinel-5 satellite. A related sensor, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite, has been making similar measurements.
According to NASA scientists, the reduction in NO2 pollution was first apparent near Wuhan, but eventually spread across the country. Millions of people have been quarantined in one of the largest such actions in human history. As of February 28, 2020, the virus had been detected in at least 56 countries.

Beat the Heat - without extra electricity
As we are in the last week of summer here in South Australia we're still experiencing high temperatures I thought I would share some of my ideas about keeping cool without the direct use of power.
No.1 I have been this doing for a long time. Going to sleep with a damp hand towel. Just as your body uses its own water (sweat) to cool its self you can use the moisture from a damp cloth for thermoregulation.
No.2 This one I have been using recently is when I thought, why isn't there a cold water bottle for hot nights rather then a hot water bottle for cold night? So I decided to make just that. I filled a 600ml bottle with water, then squeezed some air out to allow the water to expand when becoming ice. When going to bed I place the bottle in a thick sock to prevent cold burn. Most nights it lasts until morning. Make sure the lid is on tight to prevent leaking or use a  ice brick. I don't count the freezer running as extra electricity as it would be running anyway.
No.3 Now this idea isn't mine but I have friends who live in an apartment building and there bedroom faces the west and gets really hot while the sun is going down. So they have placed some silver reflective isolation sheets in their west facing window frames to prevent the heat entering through their windows and they say it works wonderfully.
No. 4 I have been meaning to make a long box and grow common reeds and place them in front of the windows which face north and west to see whether the shadows would help keep the house cool. My reason for choosing reeds is that they grow during summer and go dormant during winter so I could cut them down and allow light to enter the rooms during winter. Of course if you have your own place you can plant a tree or bush to do this.
As always share your ideas and leave a comment,
Brad

The power point is the source from which the electricity is supplied to each room, So they would have to be one of the best areas to focus on to help you lower your watt usage.
Turning off your switch is of course the best way to lower your use, so one of the main problems in power wastage is that they don’t get turned off while the item is not in use. This can be from a number of reasons
One is that your computer, entertainment system and other appliances are placed directly in front of the power point they are using, add onto that a desk or entertainment unit. When picking a place to set up pick a location next to a power point rather than infront so you can reach it. If you don’t like the look of it exposed place a plant or magazine rack next to it so it’s more covered.
If it’s impossible to leave the power point accessible, than why not try a power board with switches. They come in a verity of colours, shapes and some with extra features like surge protection and extra wide spacing for those annoying charging stations.
Another reason power points get left on is they go un-noticed. You can buy power points with a little red light above the switch to show its in the on position, This would involve replacing the existing power point and should be done by an electrician. If you are renting you can buy power boards which have similar feature in which the switches themselves alight while on.
I have also read about a new design of power cord by a company called Static Energy+Design Network. They call it The Power Aware Cord, It illuminates a blue pulsing glow which gets bright the higher the wattage. I am not sure if they are available to the market yet but they wouldn’t be hard to miss.
Lastly and I think one of the mean reasons power points get left on is Laziness. Well if you can’t just be bothered bending over to turn off a switch (or physically can’t) then there is a great idea for you as now they have foot switches for power board and extension cords with a built in foot switch to make it even easier. All you have to do is step on the switch to toggle.
As always thanks for reading and leave a comment if you have any other ideas.
