When You Should Close Your Pool for the Winter

With the end of summer creeping up, closing the pool starts moving up on the to-do list.  Covering up a pool and adding the necessary chemicals beforehand can help to keep the pool clean for some time before opening it up again. However, when exactly is the best time to close the pool? The answer is not only the specific time of the year, but also what temperature the water and air are. 

Believe it or not, temperature plays a bigger part in deciding when a pool should be closed up than the time of year alone. Closing a pool based on the date alone is not enough as temperatures vary depending on where someone lives, in addition to heat waves and cold snaps. Temperature will impact  the cleanliness of a pool as it sits covered for the rest of the year. Algae and other growth are more capable of growing in warmer temperatures than colder, so closing too early can cause pool chemicals  

Having a consistent pool temperature below 60 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended as the best time to close the pool. Closing the pool when it is cooler can lead to lasting cleanliness and less of a hassle when opening up again. It also saves you money on cleaning, pool chemicals, and other maintenance associated with opening a pool.

As a child, Sophia watched an anthology series based on age-old folklore and ghost stories. It was a decently budgeted BBC production, complete with washed out colours and some limited experimentation with prosthetics and practical effects. One particular episode followed a girl in the 14th century who lived a happy life, working with her family in summer and autumn, resting with them in winter and spring. Much like many families of the time, however, their fate was forsaken by the arrival of the Black Death.            Despite any visiting plague doctor’s caution to stay inside and reduce the spread of pestilence, the girl -- believing her home to be forsaken by God and desperate to conserve the life of she and her family -- left her home one night to reach the stone-gated border of her village. The forest was rumoured to host a demon who made itself known by the light of fire, beckoning fallen folk to secure pacts of unimaginable offerings and rewards.           Moonlight eclipsed by the trees, the girl had only her hands and feet to guide her as she groped through the dark. At first, the journey felt a merciless ordeal, she tripped over roots jutting out of the ground, sprained her ankle, and a broken tree branch marked a gouge in her palm when she tried to brace herself to prevent another fall. Gradually, however, she felt lighter and lighter, numb to her own agony, it felt as if her body was no longer hers to possess. Then, in the distance, a dim light slithered through the gaps between the branches and she followed it, finding a small clearing and a flickering torch, hovering in mid-air.            Without a second thought to price or consequence, she stumbled towards the torch and gripped it -- taking the light for herself. And there she shared the fire with a floating, six-eyed face in the dark, affixed to a serpentine neck that stretched towards her. The girl did not scream, she was ready to bargain with what she sought, even when the face cracked its jaw open wide until she stared into the neverending chasm of the demon’s throat. Not even a squeak left her lips as a small hand reached up through the abyssal gullet towards her.          Sophia, however, was at the final threshold of her terror, peeking over a cushion no longer effective in abating her fear. She began to wail uncontrollably and demanded her mother turn the television off. For a week or so she had to sleep with her terrier guarding her side, and getting her to stay asleep an entire night was a trial, her mothers woken by Sophia’s timid footsteps padding across their room, whispering the same details of a recurring nightmare in which she stood at the edge of a forest -- knowing what was inside yet powerless to control her own feet as they dragged her through the thicket and clambered straight into the demon’s maw.           Over time, the nightmare eventually stopped, and the fearful memory of the show faded -- especially since no one else to this present day, not even her mothers, remembered its existence -- only their daughter’s sleepless disturbances. But Sophia remains an immovable force to persuade when met with a forest, refusing to take a single step past a single twig in fear that she will lose something of herself.
