detail ur ideal inside passage trip
the inside passage is the route through the waterways of the bc/alaska coast between the islands and the mainland, especially vancouver island. it is my favourite thing right now and i have no idea why aside from the absurdity of trying to travel it without a car lmao. the route i'm turning over in my head right now goes from vancouver to prince rupert via the island for maximum fun 👍
Tumblr media
(^ the route we're taking... join me.....)
anywhooo my ideal complicated and exhausting journey starts with a bus/train ride to the ferry terminal. that already takes 1hr30min and we're not even on the ferry to the island yet! good start. also it doesn't really matter if you're going to horseshoe bay or tsawwassen (and therefore to nanaimo or victoria on the other side) because both of those are far enough from our final destination on the island to cause problems and stress. yayy!!
Tumblr media
this is our first ferry say hello to the coastal celebration everyone 👋
then after another 90 minutes on the ferry, you show up at the terminal and have to take yet another hour-long bus ride to downtown victoria to catch the next bus - unfortunately that bus only leaves at 7:30 in the morning and you've missed it by several hours at this point, probably. you're staying the night in victoria.
onto the second dayyy where you get up painfully early to wait around on a street corner for an islandlink bus to nanaimo... maybe it would have been easier to take another ferry... whatever. you get on. the first bus takes 2 hours. you're in nanaimo. you wait half an hour and then you take another islandlink bus. now you're in comox and it's another 2 hours later. rinse and repeat! you take another bus in campbell river and end up in our not-actual-final destination of port hardy at five in the afternoon. we're on the very northern end of the island now!! you have either been on a bus or waiting for a bus for ten hours!!!!! feeling good?
Tumblr media
this has been our home for the last day. thx porthardyexpressbus.com 👍
anyway now you get to check into another hotel for another night on vancouver island, and we haven't even reached the actual inside passage part of the trip yet.
the next day you have to wake up absurdly early YET AGAIN because bc ferries, our main mode of transport for this trip, has decided that the only sailing is at 7:30 am. it gets better: foot passengers such as ourselves have to be at the terminal at minimum 90 minutes in advance of the sailing to get a ticket. that means vacating the hotel at least by 5 am. i love life :)
however, there begins the actual fun, because from there you get a full 19 hours of navigating the tight channels of bc's northern coastline on a ferry (probably the mv northern adventure) where you hopefully get your own cabin. and i REALLY want to see bc's northern coastline. i would be on deck the whole time, babey, you best believe. you might even see whales!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i would like to be here. i would like to be here very much.
then you land in prince rupert, and from there your options are many. you can continue on by car, assuming you somehow acquire one, and keep exploring the rest of northern bc and the yukon before swinging back down the mainland, or you can hunker down in the ferry terminal overnight and immediately start making the whole trip in reverse starting at a bright, at this point not even that early, 7:30 in the morning.

Sir Arthur Ernest Streeton (1867-1943) - Romance in blue and gold
Oil on canvas. Painted in 1932.
20.3 x 30.1 inches, 51.5 x 76.5 cm. Estimate: Aus$300,000-500,000.
Sold Smith & Singer, Sydney, 16 Nov 2022 for Aus$540,000 incl B.P.
Depicts The Arch, Great Ocean Road, Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia.
The Great Ocean Road was constructed by returned servicemen between 1919 and 1932 as a memorial to their fallen comrades who gave the ultimate sacrifice in WWI. This opened up the coastline which previously was only accessible by sea or rough bush track, giving Streeton the opportunity to paint this work.

THE GREAT OCEAN WALK: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE
Tumblr media
One of Victoria’s greatest walking tracks is the Great Ocean Walk. As it wraps around the coastline of the Southern Ocean, it gives those walking along it the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in this monumental location’s landscape, wildlife, and history. From sweeping ocean views to hidden rainforests, there is something for everyone.
For local and international visitors planning to travel along the Great Ocean Walk, many things are worth knowing before you set off. We have compiled a guide that will give you an insight into the location, what you can expect throughout your journey, and the important considerations to make as you plan.
The walk begins in Apollo Bay, a town in southwestern Victoria. Apollo Bay is a stop on the Great Ocean Road that winds along the coast, passing through the Great Otway National Park. Behind Apollo Bay are the mountains of Otway Ranges, partly forested and cleared for grazing and dairying. When you reach Apollo Bay, keep your eyes peeled for Apollo Bay Visitor Centre, as this will serve as the starting point for your journey.
Tumblr media
Arrange your transportation from the end of your walk, Port Campbell, back to Apollo Bay (or where you have chosen to park your car). Shuttle services and public transport are available; we suggest organising your preferred transportation option before setting off.
The Great Ocean Walk is often travelled across eight days, allowing travellers to slow down and appreciate the sounds and sights at a gentle pace. There are also daily and multi-day trip options for covering the entire distance in a shorter timeframe.
Camping and lodge accommodations are available for those covering the distance over several days. Seven camping sites have been designed to be reached at the end of a daily hike, approximately ten to sixteen kilometres apart. To secure a camping spot or lodge, check availability ahead of time and book your accommodation.
The majestic locations available as you traverse the Great Ocean Walk can be separated into eight sections:
One: Apollo Bay to Elliot Ridge
Two: Elliot Ridge to Blanket Bay
Three: Blanket Bay to Cape Otway
Four: Cape Otway to Aire River
Five: Aire River to Johanna Beach
Six: Johanna Beach to Ryan’s Den
Seven: Ryan’s Den to Devils Kitchen
Eight: Devils Kitchen to Twelve Apostles
The Great Ocean Walk’s sections are classified as a ‘Grade 3’ hike. This classification was given as it is ‘suitable for most ages and fitness levels’ though some experience in bushwalking is recommended. Some steep staircases and gradients are presented throughout the walk—challenging terrain and areas that require a distance to be covered along the beach. Hikers should remain vigilant of the path as it can be wet and slippery in different areas or due to changing weather conditions.
Tumblr media
One of the best ways to ensure a smooth and engaging experience on the Great Ocean Walk is by completing the trail with a licenced tour guide. When partnering with a tour company, of which there are over twenty locally, you have access to several services depending on your expected duration and personal needs. From transportation, guided tours, camping and safety equipment hire, supplying food, and more.
Engaging with a licenced tour operator means that a professional will complete all the planning and preparation, allowing you to relax and enjoy every moment of your journey.
If you are walking the Great Ocean Road Walk, whether in a group or independently, we recommend that you take some safety precautions:
There is limited phone reception along the walk, so ensure you mark the last location with reception to walk back to if you need to make an emergency call. We also advise being familiar with the emergency contact numbers 000 and 112.
Consider bringing a personal locator beacon or satellite radio to keep those waiting for you updated on your location or for emergencies.
It is essential to pack a First Aid kit or, where possible, travel with someone who is First Aid certified.
Be vigilant of snakes, especially in the warmer months. Keep your distance and make a wide berth if you come across one. Precautions include keeping your tent and belongings off the ground and secure, checking the area before sitting down, wearing hiking boots, gators, and pants, and more. See the Great Ocean Walk website for more details on ways you can keep safe along the trail.
Bushfires are a serious risk, and the Great Ocean Walk is a high-risk area, especially during the summer. We recommend checking the fire rating for the days you intend to be walking and being familiar with bushfire safety, which you can read more about through the Visit Victoria website.
Many beaches along the trail experience rogue waves and tide changes. Wreck Beach, in particular, is a high-risk area. Keep a minimum ten-metre distance from the water. We also recommend checking the tide timetable. Only travel down to the beach if it is low tide and safe, and remain aware of quickly changing conditions.
You will need expert guidance and organisation for a truly memorable experience on the Great Ocean Walk. With Auswalk, you can enjoy guided, self-guided and tailored walks across Australia. As your qualified travel companion, you can leave everything to us – from accommodation to food. It’s not just about getting you to the destination but also about the journey that leads to it. Come and see the hidden gems of the Great Ocean Walk with Auswalk; contact us today to start your journey.

"London Robbery Victim Trails Former Pals Here," Border Cities Star. June 6, 1933. Page 5 & 16. ---- Thugs Beat Up His Wife ---- Took His Life Savings Of $1,500 and Fled To Border ---- Revenge Sought ---- Taxi Ride to East Windsor Is Clue; May Lead To Detroit --- Vowing vengeance on the two former friends who yesterday stole his life savings, after savagely beating his wife, Alex. Tichonchuk, of London, Ont., reached Walkerville early this afternoon and left at once for East Windsor. He said he believed that at 1037 Albert street he could pick up clues which would put him on the trail of the robbers.
TWO SUSPECTS The two suspects, whom he has known for three years, are John Neyare, 35, and Joseph Kozuboski, 33.Mrs. Tichonchuk is in Victoria Hospital at London, suffering chiefly from shock. Head and neck wounds she sustained when beaten into agreement to reveal the hiding place of Tichonchuk's $1,500, which he had just withdrawn from a bank to buy a small farm, are not considered serious.
POSTS REWARD Tichonchuk gave further impetus to the hunt this afternoon by announcing that he would pay a $300 reward for the capture of the men and the return of his money. IN DETROIT? As search for the London bandits was maintained in Windsor and East Windsor today, police inclined to the belief that the wanted men have slipped across the river to Detroit. CAME HERE IN TAXI Acting on information received yesterday that the two thugs came here as taxi passengers, Detective-Sergeant Campbell and Detective Maxwell, withthe aid of East Windsor police, main-tained a night-long investigation. Re-turning to London the taxi-driver re-ported delivering two passengers to Windsor. Failing to remember the address, he described the street as one having car tracks and provision for motor vehicle traffic on only one side.
From this description police were led to believe that Seminole street, in East Windsor, was the thoroughfare where the bandits had been taken. A thorough check failed of results.
As soon as the message from London was received here, all Border police departments were notified and customs and immigration officers at all regular points of exit were requested to be on their guard.
GONE OVER RIVER? It is thought, however, that a pair of desperate characters bold enough to dash for the Border in a hired vehicle would not spend much time here, but immediately charter some craft to convey them across the river.
TO EAST WINDSOR Murray Haines, 22-year-old cabdriver for the La Salle Taxi Company, and former London policeman, returned to London last evening and reported to police that he had taken the two fugitives from the city to East Windsor yesterday afternoon.
He was not aware that he had carried the two suspects in the daring daylight robbery until he checked into his office after the trip, Haines declared.
The wanted men are John Neyare, 35, of 5 Webb street, and Joseph Ko-zuboski, 33, of Inkerman street. They were friends of the Tichonchuk family, and detectives charge that they paid a friendly visit to the home, and finding the housewife alone, beat her into semi-consciousness, and escaped with $1,500 from a bedroom hiding place.
PAINFULLY BEATEN Mrs. Tichonchuk lies in Victoria Hospital, London, suffering from shock and from severe head and neck wounds the result of the beating she received from the yeggs. A number of teeth were loosened by blows on the mouth. She was attended in Victoria Hospital by Dr. H. Murray Simpson, and her condition is not considered serious.
As the robbers fled from the house, the woman dragged herself to the front porch and called for help. Her cries were answered by Peter Sawa and Charles Howard, neighbors, who rendered first aid, and had her removed to hospital.
The taxi driver related to The Star last night the role he played in the getaway from London.
DRIVER'S STORY "I answered a call to the Matxh grocery store at Hill and William street," he said. "Two foreigners were waiting, and they climbed into the car. They said they wanted to go to Windsor. I was a little surprised, as we don't get such trips very often. But when I told them the price would be $20, one of them pulled a roll of bills from his pocket and paid me the money.
"I heard the men speaking in Russian on the trip to the Border, but I didn't pay much attention to them. They told me to hurry, but they didn't seem very much excited until I pulled up at a gas station a couple of times. However, I wasn't suspicious of them, as they said they wanted to visit a sick relative in Windsor, and couldn't wait for a train.
"I traveled on No. 2 highway, and when I reached the Border Cities, they instructed me about the streets on which to turn, I didn't know the district very well, but as far as I know, I let them off in East Windsor."
DINED IN WINDSOR After dropping his fares, Haines drove to Sandwich street, he said to The Star. He recalls crossing the bridge near the Walkerville ferry, and going directly into Windsor, where he stopped for lunch at the Plaza Cafe on Pitt street. After spending an hour or so in Windsor, he returned to London.
Haines description of his fares tallies with those of the two men seen to run away from the Webb street home, a few minutes after the robbery, according to police.
Detective Earl Knight and two constables scoured the district in a police car shorty after the attack on the defenseless woman, but by that time the robbers were on the way to the Border.
The money taken by the raiders represented six years' savings of Mr. Tichonchuk, who emigrated from Russia to Canada. He drew the cash from a local bank on Saturday, to pay hospital and doctors' bills, and to make a down payment on a small farm on which he intended to settle.
The husband was at work in a downtown factory yesterday morning, and had no knowledge of the robbery until informed by detectives. His only child, Alex, Jr., was at classes in Aberdeen school.
Members of another family who resided in the cottage were away at the time.
THREATENED WITH DEATH Mrs. Tichonchuk was trussed up by the robbers and threatened with death, when she refused to disclose the hiding place of her husband's cash. The marauders carried her to an attic, and then threw her down the stairs. They also pushed her down a stairs into the cellar, and then proceeded to ransack the residence.
After upsetting bureau drawers and upsetting beds and furniture, the robbers finally located the money in a bedroom.
The suspects had been working on railway section gangs, but have not been employed in recent months, it is stated. They have resided in London about three years.
FARMER ROBBED LONDON, Ont., June 6. - Two robbers, one a burly man of 50, and the other about 30 years old, slim and sickly-looking, trussed and robbed James Rae, a man of 60, in his home on the Second Concession of West-minster last night at 10.30. The robbers got about $50 in cash and made their escape, although Provincial Officer Lemkin was on the scene a short time after they drove away.
Provincial police say the description of the robbers does not tally with that of the Russians who yesterday beat up and robbed Mrs. Alex Tichonchuk of $1,500 in her home on Webb street, but the methods of the men are strangely similar.
According to the story Rae told Inspector Hamar Gardner of the Provincial Police, two men came to his place, a small farm, a week ago to buy hay. They looked at a stack, seemed satisfied and said they would be back that night. They did not return then, however.
KNOCKED DOWN Last night Rae had retired when two men knocked at the door, one of them being the spokesman for the hay buyers of a week ago. He asked to be shown the stack again. Rae unsuspectingly took a flashlight and was walking toward the stack when the big man struck him a heavy blow and knocked him down. The robbers then roped and tied him and took about $8 from his pockets and a gold-filled watch.
They demanded if he had any more money and finally forced him back into his house where they were met by Mrs. Weir, Rae's housekeeper, who had been aroused by the scuffle.
LOCK UP WOMAN The bandits then threw Rae on the floor, tying him more securely, and they locked the woman in a room. After a search they found $37 belonging to Rae and took $1 of the money the housekeeper had in her possession. When they had left the house, Mrs. Weir escaped from the room and released Rae, who informed the police.
SHOWN above are photographs of the scene and principals in the London assault and robbery of Mrs. Alex Tichonchuk, whose assailants are being sought in the Border Cities. The upper picture shows the Tichonchuk home on Webb street. On the lower left are Mr. and Mrs. Tichonchuk. Third from theleft is Murray Haines, 22-year-old taxi driver who brought the robbers to Windsor and gave police their first clue as to whereabouts of the thugs. At the extreme right is Mrs. Mary Bikow, a neighbor, who heard Mrs. Tichonchuk's screams and came to her aid, with George Howard and his son, Charles, who are shown in the insets.

Great Ocean Road 12 Apostles is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Australia, attracting millions of visitors every year. They are located in Port Campbell National Park in Victoria, about 275 kilometers from Melbourne. Driving along the Great Ocean Road, you can enjoy the magnificent coastal scenery and the charm of small towns. Great Ocean Road 12 Apostles are coastal rock pillars formed by limestone after millions of years of erosion and weathering. They tower over the turbulent Southern Ocean, creating a stunning natural masterpiece. This artwork is also a tribute to this natural wonder.

A BBC reality TV show aired last month that showcased the beauty of British Columbia while also constantly pointing out how frustrating the province's transportation system can be.
Race Across the World began its third season in British Columbia, with five teams competing in an Amazing Race-style journey to get to St. John's, Newfoundland.
The first episode saw people dropped in Vancouver's Stanley Park and told to head to the Haida Gwaii community of Tlell without any access to phones, airplanes, or car rentals.
One team is told to head to Whistler, only to find out there is no public transportation that heads north. Other heads to Vancouver Island and finds out it would cost $500 to travel from Campbell River to Port Hardy.
"With public transport so limited, Canadians have learned to embrace car sharing," gravely intones the narrator at one point, showing one of the four teams that resorted to hitchhiking or ride-hailing websites to make their way across the province, including from Prince George to Prince Rupert and Victoria to Port Hardy.
The lack of connecting buses from town to town clearly exasperated many of the teams, used to a much more robust system of buses and trains across Europe—albeit in countries that are usually much smaller and more densely populated than British Columbia.
"I was under the impression we would be able to switch to another bus, and it'd be easy, so I'm a bit frustrated at the moment," said one contestant as he waited for a bus in Nanaimo.
Clips of the episode went viral in British Columbia over the last week, catching the eye of many politicians who have advocated for better regional transit service.
"We've actually gone backward over the decades," said Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau, who lives in the Cowichan Valley and has advocated for better transit service linking communities on the island.
"There used to be significantly more access to public transit than there is now in smaller communities about declining regional transit service in B.C.—in large part sparked by the departure of Greyhound from across the province five years ago—David Eby argued it wasn't the case.
But Furstenau believes there are opportunities for more investment, starting with the mindset that part of government infrastructure is public transit—and not just public transit inside Metro Vancouver and Victoria; that's public transit across the province.
If there's any consolation for wounded pride, the next episode of the season had contestants go from Haida Gwaii to Dawson City, Yukon—making the difficulties of southern B.C. look tame by comparison.
