Caribbean women have roots in the Old World, but there has been no way of tracing where in Africa or India they come from. By insisting that English was the only accepted language of education and communication, other languages were broken, and the links to faraway continents turned flimsy. Still, despite the many problems in the Caribbean today, gender equality has become less of an issue. Women have taken the reigns of family and community. Women in public life and education today are trailblazers. In 2022, there are eight female heads of state and prime ministers in the Caribbean. In Barbados, both the president and prime minister are women. Simpson-Miller, who served for two terms. Dominica led the way by electing its female Prime Minister in 1980. Since then, Haiti, Bermuda, Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago have followed suit by electing women as prime ministers. As Barbados’s intrepid and outspoken prime minister, Mia Mottley, said, women have had to work twice as hard to be half as noticed as men, and that obstacle has produced greater competence. The examples set by women now have set the stage to remove this burden for the next generation. Perhaps the defection of men in family life – absent fathers created out of slavery and perpetuated through that same trauma – has led to matriarchy in Trinidad and the Caribbean.

I'm glad that Jamaica loves Harry and Meg and I STILL think of them as Prince and Princess of that country. I bet even they agreed. Plus, it was so cool to see the PM smiling with them. Also to see the Marleys embracing them too. Hope one day I get to meet Ziggy. But I have a fun question. If you can pick one Bob Marley song to fit the Duke and Duchess, what would you pick? I'd pick "One Love." :)
Not surprised by the love shown by Prime Minster Holness
Harry has a warm history with the island; the former Prime Minister
Portia Simpson-Miller & the Marleys. It was nice to see him reunited with Rita Marley
One Love is perfect. Since you've already picked that then perhaps Jamming
"Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow
I and I will see you through
'Cause every day we pay the price we're the living sacrifice
Jammin' 'til the jam is through"
"Jah knows I might have tried, the truth I cannot hide
To keep you satisfied
True love I know exist, it's the love I can't resist
So, jam by my side"
Harry and Meghan in Jamaica are soft-power dynamite. Britain is left with kryptonite William and Kate
Nels Abbey
At times like these, it’s clear that the Sussexes represent a missed opportunity for a UK that needs friends in the world

A popular Nigerian adage says “the cow never knows the value of its tail until it is chopped off”. In many tragic ways, this speaks to today’s Britain. From EU membership, to competent leadership, to low inflation, it seems necessary for Britain to lose things to appreciate their importance.
This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.
In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.
It’s not just that they are royals. Prince William and Kate headed to “no problem” Jamaica in 2022, and encountered problems aplenty. As their PR fiasco unfolded, they were derided for shaking hands with Jamaican children through wire fences, and for motoring viceroy-style through crowded streets in a fancy Land Rover. At the nightmare’s end, Jamaica basically handed Britain its P45, informing the royals of its intention to be a republic, to “move on”.

Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan.
In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.
‘God Save the King’ doesn’t fall from Jamaican lips so easily. Soon we’ll be a republic
Barbara Blake-HannahRead more
But that was then, before the British media’s own version of Orwell’s “two minutes hate” became a thing. Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.
Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.
The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

In the political sense, there is the crossover of patriarchy. In this context, as Hooks (2004) puts it, “patriarchy is a political-social system that insists that males are inherently dominating superiors to everything and everyone deemed weak, especially females…” (p.1). The political patriarchy says that leading is a man’s job. This as mentioned before has come from the acceptance of patriarchy from the days of slavery.
Although in recent times women have been moving up and closer to equality, there are still some difficulties. This stems from the general belief that a man should lead. Take for example The Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica. The issue though arises with the disbelief that she is really capable of leading a country. The idea is that a female leader is ‘controlled’ by a man behind the scenes, but a male leader is ‘supported’ by a woman.
Seemingly simpler than, who is leading the country, are career biases. Coming from males being masculine and dominant it is perceived as ‘disgraceful’ to associate with careers that appeared to be inferior or feminine. Because of this men ignore careers that are branded as feminine, hence women acquire jobs that are less than that of the man. For example, male doctor and female nurse. A nurse is a female’s profession and therefore is looked down on my men. Notice to that the male in this example is above the level of the nurse because men are to be in charge. Few women occupy professions of power. Even so, women tend to aspire for social mobility and usually use education to do so. Females have always been good workers, but taking from the idea that girls should aim to show white femininity, they were encouraged to stay at home and practice their wifely duties. On the other hand, boys were allowed to play and practice physical work. Because of this socialization of both genders, girls are more likely to attend, participate and excel in the educational system. Through this advancement more females successfully pass through secondary and tertiary level institutions. Despite this, men still seem to have the higher, more supervisory roles in organizations and society at large.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding this morning (December 12) announced six new scholarships for women pursuing tertiary education as among the initiatives to be rolled out by the party as it commemorates today as the inaugural Portia Simpson Miller Day. Disenchantment has returned for a third season and its amazing ensemble of veteran voice actors has returned with it. The new season also boasts some impressive guest stars, who only appear for an episode or two, but have a major impact upon the story and setting.
Set in a fantasy realm that may also be the same reality as Futurama, Disenchantment centers around Princess Tabeanie, or Bean for short. A hard-drinking rebel who has little use for her father's ideas about marrying her off to secure an alliance with a neighboring nation, Bean feels that there's some great destiny awaiting her somewhere outside the gates of Dreamland. She's right, but she's also not too crazy about fulfilling that destiny, which involves paying a debt her mother's family owes Hell and having a crown screwed into her head.

Season 3 picks up right where season 2 ended, with Bean having escaped being burned at the stake as a witch by a mob of Dreamlanders only to find herself surrounded by an entirely different mob of Trogs: a race of stunted, sub-terrain cave dwellers, who are in league with Bean's treacherous mother, Queen Dagmar. Here's a rundown of all the returning cast of Disenchantment and the roles that they play, as well as all the guest stars with major roles in season 3.
The lead heroine of Disenchantment, Bean is not your typical tomboy princess who wants adventure in the great wide somewhere. She'd be much happier if she just had the freedom to get wasted and pick up whatever cute guys she could find at the tavern, but fate (and the rest of the world, it seems) have other plans for her. She is voiced by Abbi Jacobson, who is best known as the creator and star of Broad City. She can also be heard in Bojack Horseman as the voice of Todd's ex-girlfriend, Emily.
Luci is Bean's own personal demon, bonded to her for all eternity to push her to the path of wickedness. This proved to be a much easier job than Luci's masters in Hell had anticipated, and he soon began to slack off on his demonic duties to run a bar and contribute to the general wickedness of Dreamland as a whole. Luci is voiced by Eric André, who is perhaps most famous as the creator and host of The Eric André Show. He also voiced the hyena Azizi in The Lion King remake.
Too cynical for the world of elves and too naïve for the world of man, Elfo is a half-elf who isn't entirely sure where he belongs. He has found a place at Bean's side, but his crush on her is unrequited and the only other love he seems to find is in all the wrong places (very wrong, incredibly sick and filthy wrong places). Elfo is voiced by writer/actor Nat Faxon, who is probably best known for his collaborations with Jim Rash, such as The Descendants and The Way, Way Back. He also played a lead in the FX show Married and the Netflix comedy series Friends From College. More recently, he's provided the voice for Captain Underpants in The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space and will be playing Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Detours series.

Absolute ruler of Dreamland and Bean's beloved (if begrudging) father, King Zøg starts season 3 in ill health and on the verge of losing his life along with his crown. Naturally Zøg being Zøg, he's more concerned about the hat than his health. He is voiced by animation legend John DiMaggio, who is well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Bender. He also provided the voice for Jake the Dog in Adventure Time, Dr. Drakken on Kim Possible, and even Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War video game series. Recently, he voiced Heidegger in the English dub of the Final Fantasy VII remake. He also voiced both King Shark and the demon Trigon in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
The second wife of Zøg, who abandoned him and Dreamland to seek a new life as Queen of the Pirates, Oona returns to Dreamland in Disenchantment season 3. She is voiced by Tress MacNeille, who has voiced multiple characters on both The Simpsons and Futurama, including Agnes Skinner and Mom (of Mom's Friendly Robot Corp.). MacNeille also provides the voices for Prince Derek and the Archdruidess who leads Dreamland's state religion. She is also beloved as the voice of Dot Warner from Animaniacs.
Heir to the throne of the neighboring kingdom of Bentwood, Prince Merkimer was intended to be Bean's second fiancée after the untimely impalement of his older brother. While the wedding was called off after he was turned into a talking pig, Merkimer continued to hang around the palace of Dreamland being sad and/or drunk. He is voiced by British comedian Matt Berry, who is famous for his appearances on The IT Crowd, Toast of London, and What We Do In The Shadows. He can currently be heard in The Watch, lending his voice to a magic sword named Wayne.
A torturer and executioner by trade, Stan is still a jovial man who does his job with a kind word and a craftsman's eye. He is voiced by British comedy legend Noel Fielding, who is well-known as one half of The Mighty Boosh and for playing Richmond in The IT Crowd. Viewers may recognize him as a co-presenter for The Great British Bake-Off. He also lent his voice to Balthazar in The LEGO Movie 2.

Still best known for playing the role of Michael Bolton in Office Space, David Herman went on to become one of the most prolific voice actors in Hollywood. He voices several characters in Disenchantment, the most notable being the Herald of Dreamland. He also provides the voices for Bean's uncle Jerry and the snarky spa attendant Chazz. He can also be heard as Mr. Frond in Bob's Burgers and Dmitry in Central Park.
Bean's mother and King Zøg's first wife, Dagmar is a wicked witch who has big plans for Bean involving some sort of prophecy. Season 3 will find her once again manipulating her daughter for her own sinister designs. Dagmar is voiced by Sharon Horgan, a comedian and voice actor who has appeared in several British sitcoms including Catastrophe and This Way Up. She provides the voices for Courtney Portnoy in Bojack Horseman and Kathleen in Bob's Burgers and also appeared in the movie Game Night
One of the most prolific voice actors in the business, Maurice LaMarche is perhaps most famous for his impression of Orson Welles, whom he played on both The Simpsons and Futurama. His voice was also dubbed over Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as Orson Wells in Tim Burton's biographical film Ed Wood. LaMarche's chief role on Disenchantment is the treacherous, three-eyed minister Odval, but he voices a number of supporting roles as well, such as the legendary demon hunter Big Jo.
Bunty is Bean's simple-minded, ever-pregnant maid. She is voiced by Lucy Montgomery, who will be familiar to many fans of British comedy. She appeared in the 2011 revival of Absolutely Fabulous, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Bellamy's People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Tracy Breaks the Internet. She can also be heard on a number of children's programs, having lent her voice to both Thomas the Tank-Engine and Bob the Builder.

The chief wizard of Dreamland ever since he was allowed to put stars on his dunce cap, Sorcerio is perhaps the most incompetent member of Dreamland's ruling council — a low bar to jump over. He is voiced by legendary voice actor Billy West, who is instantly recognizable to fans of Futurama as the voice of Fry, Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan and Professor Farnsworth. West has provided several iconic voices over his long career, including the title characters from The Ren & Stimpy Show and Doug. West pulls quadruple-duty on Disenchantment as well, also providing the voices for the Jester, Sir Mertz, and the Elf King Rulo.
Season 3 of Disenchantment briefly finds Elfo confined to a freak show, where he befriends a sarcastic mermaid named Mora who has dreams of being an actress. Mora is voiced by Meredith Hagner, who might be recognized as Portia Davenport from Search Party. She also voiced Madison on Bob's Burgers.
Rich Fulcher as Sir Turbish - Best known for his work with Noel Fielding and Matt Berry on various projects, Rich Fulcher returns to voice the awkward but well meaning Sir Turbish.
Lauren Tom as Trixy - Well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Amy Wong, Lauren Tom lends her voice to Trixy: a female Torg who develops a truly disturbing attraction to Elfo.
Richard Ayoade as Alva - Best known as Maurice Moss from The IT Crowd, Richard Ayodae plays Alva, the mysterious man who essentially rules Steamland.
Phil LaMarr as God - Best known to Futurama fans as the voice of Hermes Conrad, Phil LaMarr returns as the voice of God, the chief deity of Disenchantment's cosmology.

Professor Alvin Wint - 1 - two - All around the world, governments are focusing on changing, reforming, or modernising their inhabitants to efficiently achieve what should be the fundamental objective of every nation, which is to enhance also the quality of life of its citizens and inhabitants. Standard reform proposals include enhanced focus on areas wherein Government adds maximum value to the society, decentralisation of ability to enhance the rate and quality of decision making, enhanced accountability with a focus on performance results, reformed compensation structures in the leadership of merit based operation, greater levels of technological application, and orientation of the dimensions and cost of the public service into the needs and capacities of economies and societies.
Jamaica was for over 2 decades in a reform process. The latest inflexion points on Jamaica's reform travel can be tracked to 2009 when Prime Minister Bruce Golding recognized the Public Sector Transformation Unit, led by Patricia Sinclair McCalla, whose job was modulated by the Consultative Tracking Group, chaired by Peter Moses, and 2014, when Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller established, under also the operational direction of Veniece Pottinger Scott, also the Public Sector Transformation and Modernisation Programme, which represented a merger of the PSTU and the formerly recognized Public Sector Modernisation Division. The work of the PSTM is supervised by also the Public Sector Transformation Committee, chaired by Patricia Francis, which, in turn, reports to also the Public Sector Transformation Committee of Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Simpson Miller.
At both of those inflexion points, there were calls for Government into cut also the public sector down to dimensions. Both administrations resisted these calls. The technocratic units recognized as catalysts to the reform process supported both political administrations in rejecting job cuts as the main agenda and results of this process. See European Economy: Government Wages and Labor Market Outcomes, April 2014 at http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/economy. But Jamaica's public servants aren't well remunerated in absolute terms. Remuneration levels from the Jamaican public sector are significantly beneath the levels that obtain in other nations by which Jamaicans are very familiar. Jamaica's relatively high wage-to Gross domestic product bill occurs not because Jamaica's wages are high, but since Jamaica's Gross domestic product is low as a result of the economics growing at a very slow pace more than the last four decades. Further, Jamaica's public servants are stretched, and stressed, since there is less of them than is also the case in other nations, and several, whether in the regions of law enforcement, health, education or also the central public service, are confronted with significant challenges and limitations on also the availability of assistance services and goods. Wage restraint isn't a sustainable strategy under these circumstances. 파워볼사이트 The challenge will be that there are only 3 ways to compensate a public sector.
Senator Brown seemed to signal to Government members that he was ready for a clash when he warned them against “drawing me tongue” — a quote made famous by former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. Despite support coming from the Opposition benches, Brown leaned into the Government members with recollections from the extradition of jailed western Kingston area strongman Christopher “Dudus” Coke about the role of former prime minister and leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Bruce Golding, as well as about Leader of Government Business Senator Kamina Johnson Smith — whom he described as an hypocrite and liar in terms of an e-mail scandal — and even the Senate President Tom Tavares-Finson, whom he said he “left in the gutter”.
