Death toll rises to 91, rescue work on full swing in Punjab, Uttarakhand on high alert

Tuesday was a disastrous day for Uttarakhand as the twin storms lashed over the state causing heavy rain. Monsoon combined with the western disturbance is causing heavy rainfall across India. In Uttarakhand on Tuesday, it killed 8 people including 3 Gangotri pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh.

Previously, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh saw the wrath of the weather but there was sunshine today delivering relief. The authorities in these states got a chance to gear up the relief, rescue, and road restoration works.

There were 21 fresh death cases reported due to the torrential rains in the region taking the death toll to 91 in the rain-affected areas.

Many new areas were added to the list of flood-hit areas in Punjab including Fazilka where Sutlej river water was released. Further, in UP, Agra & Prayagraj were placed on the flood alert map after the Yamuna and Ganga river started flowing above the danger mark.

Landslides became a common site in Uttarakhand where rocks rolled down the mountains over vehicles crushing a minibus on the highway at Gangnani in Uttarkashi district, killing three pilgrims from MP’s Dewas who were on their way back from the Gangotri shrine on Monday night. Heavy rain was recorded between Monday night and Tuesday morning in Uttarakhand “The spell will continue, particularly in the Kumaon region, , over the next 24 hours,” said Bikram Singh, director of the Met office in Dehradun.

UP: Jyoti Maurya denies charges, opts for divorce, tells media 'don't poke your nose in personal matters'

The matter took flare when Alok accused Jyoti of corruption as well as having an Illicit relationship. He further accused her of plotting to murder him.

The ongoing dispute between PCS officer Jyoti Maurya, posted as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Bareilly, and her husband Alok Maurya continues to take many twists and turns. It is no less dramatic than the 1999 Hindi romantic movie ‘Sooryavansham’ in which a labourer in a transport company who encourages his wife to complete her IAS studies, who is later appointed as the District Collector in her home district.

In the latest development in the story, Jyoti has filed for divorce from her husband. She has also accused him of hacking her phone and planting false evidence of her infidelity, according to media reports.

In a viral social media audio clip, Jyoti is heard saying to her husband, “Bilkul chadayethe 5000 Rs tilak lekin tabhi toh paresan karte the aap log paise ke liye, gadi ke liye (You have taken Rs 5000 as dowry yet you have harassed me for money and car).”

Jyoti has called Alok deceitful and alleged that Alok introduced himself as a Gram Panchayat officer before their marriage when he was actually working as a ‘sweeper’.

Currently, Alok is a class — 4 employee with the Panchayat Raj department.

The couple has twin daughters. Jyoti married Alok Maurya in 2010 when she was doing her graduation course. Alok and his parents reportedly helped Jyoti prepare for UPPSC (Uttar Pradesh Civil Service Commission) in Prayagraj. According to reports it was he who supported and funded Jyoti’s education which ultimately helped her to crack the state civil services examination.

In an interview with News 18, Jyoti Maurya said that this matter is purely a dispute between a husband and wife and not one between an SDM and a sweeper. She also said that she had no problem with him being a sweeper. She refused to comment on the corruption charges.

Speaking about the next step, Jyoti told News 18, “My case is in court. I will say my words in the court itself. Let the people think what they want.”

Reacting to the allegation of having a relationship with Manish Dubey, her home guard commandant, Jyoti made it clear in the interview that it is her personal matter. She questioned, “What do you want to see by entering the houses? Why is there an interest in how the husband and wife live? When the relationship deteriorated, the matter went to court.”

Recently, Alok accused Jyoti of corruption as well as having an Illicit relationship. He further accused her and Dubey of plotting to murder him.

Second Encounter Killing In UP Days After Witness In 2005 Murder Shot Dead

Faced with tough questions from the Opposition on the daylight crime, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the government will crush those involved in the crime.

New Delhi: A man allegedly involved in the killing of a witness in a BSP MLA's murder case last month was shot dead in an encounter, Uttar Pradesh police said today.

According to police, Usman was one of the six shooters who pumped bullets into Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Raju Pal, on February 24. Two policemen on Umesh Pal's security duty, died of injuries later.

Shocking visuals of the killing captured by a CCTV camera went viral, prompting questions on the state's law and order situation.

Faced with tough questions from the Opposition on the daylight crime, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the government will crush those involved in the crime.

Referring to the Chief Minister's remark, Shalabh Mani Tripathi, BJP MLA and former advisor to the Chief Minister, tweeted in Hindi this morning, "We had said we would crush them. The man who fired the first bullet at Umesh Pal was shot dead in an encounter."

Dr Badri Vishal Singh, medical officer at a Prayagraj hospital, said Usman was brought in dead. "We performed the examination, following which he was declared dead and the body was sent to the mortuary. He was shot."

Umesh Pal was a key witness in the murder of Raju Pal, a BSP legislator murdered months after winning the Allahabad (West) Assembly seat by defeating former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed's younger brother Khalid Azim.

Atiq Ahmed, his brother and former MLA Ashraf are accused in the Raju Pal murder case and are currently in jail.

Hitting back at the Opposition amid the uproar over Umesh Pal's murder, Chief Minister Adityanath had said that Atiq Ahmed was an MP from Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and said his government would not allow "mafia raj" in the state.

Today's encounter was the first against the shooters involved in Umesh Pal's murder. Police had said the driver of the SUV used in the killing had been shot dead in an earlier encounter.

For the five other shooters, state police had earlier announced a reward of ₹ 50,000. They have now raised it to ₹ 2.5 lakh.
