"SECRETS IN OIL: UNVEILING THE PRINCESSES OF SAXE-COBURG" ♥️👑🖌
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Heinrich von Angeli: The Royal Brush and the Royal Sisters' Gaze" 🖌🌞🌏
Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh, Grand Duchess of Hesse, is shown looking to the left in a pale blue dress with lace over her shoulders and a rose at her breast. 💙✨️
This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria, who was Princess Victoria Melita's grandmother. In 1894 Victoria married her first cousin, Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse, following the wishes of their shared grandmother, Queen Victoria, but their marriage was a failure and Victoria went on to scandalize the royal families of Europe by divorcing her husband in 1901 and marrying her first love, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia, in 1905.
Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, is shown with head and shoulders to the front, in evening dress with a fur-edged wrap. 💖✨️
The third daughter of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, she was married in 1896 to Prince Ernst, of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria, who was Princess Alexandra's grandmother.
"As we admire this artwork, let's reflect on the lives of Victoria Melita and Alexandra. Born into a lineage that intertwined with the most powerful dynasties of Europe, their stories are woven into the fabric of history. Victoria Melita, a granddaughter of both Queen Victoria and Emperor Alexander II, led a life marked by scandal and romance, defying royal norms to marry the man she loved. Her sister Alexandra, though less known, shared in the family's complex web of alliances that shaped the course of European history.❤️
So, as you behold this masterpiece, ponder this: What secrets do the serene faces of Victoria Melita and Alexandra hold? What whispers of the past might echo through the halls of their royal lineage? Angeli's painting is not just a visual delight; it's a silent testament to the tumultuous and fascinating era it represents. Dive into the depths of this canvas and discover the stories that lie beneath the surface."🫀👑

Alexandra Louise Olga Victoria was born at the Schloss Rosenau in Coburg, Bavaria, Germany on September 1, 1878, the third daughter and fourth child of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She was the granddaughter of Alexander II of Russia and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
Affectionately called “Sandra” by family and friends, Princess Alexandra was described by her sister Marie as “fat”, “harmless”, “sweet-tempered and fair headed”. She was not as brilliant as her other sisters, and was considered to be more restrained and less beautiful than they were.
Princess Alexandra, together with her sisters Marie (future Queen of Romania), Victoria Melita (later Grand Duchess of Hesse and, afterwards, Grand Duchess of Russia), and Beatrice (future Infanta of Spain and Duchess of Galliera) had a peripatetic life when she growing up, transferring from one place to other—Germany, United Kingdom, Malta, and Cyprus—due to her father’s career in the Navy.
Their mother, believing her daughters must marry young, orchestrated Princess Alexandra’s engagement to Ernst II, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg despite objections from her own husband, who had doubts about the status of his future-son-in-law, and Queen Victoria, who thought her granddaughter was still too young. The Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha prevailed and Princess Alexandra married Ernst in Coburg, Germany on April 20, 1896. The union produced five children.
Following the marriage, now Princess Alexandra of Hohenlohe-Langenburg spent the rest of her life in Germany. Although she loved the country, she was not too keen on how often it rained there that she would “bemoan the weather… it becomes a personal offence”. At the height of World War I, she worked as a Red Cross Nurse.
Upstaged by her three other sisters. As Royal Digest writer John Wimbles once put it in his 2005 article of the princess, Alexandra was a “shadowy figure eclipsed by her brilliant sisters”.
Nevertheless, together with her husband and several of her children, she was one of the earliest supporters of the Nazi Party, which she joined on May 1, 1937. She passed away on April 16, 1942 in Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She was 63 yearsold. Her remains were buried in the family cemetery at Schloss Langenburg.

90 years since HRH Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark , Margravine of Baden Marriage 17–08–1931
Theodora was the second of five children of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.  She was born May 30, 1906 at Tatoi.
The little Princess, who was baptized according to the rites of the Greek Orthodox church, was given the nickname, Dolla, by her older sister, Margarita, who was born in April 1905.    Margarita called her sister “dear Dolla,” as she could not pronounce Theodora.
Princess Theodora of Greece came to the attention of the international media in March 1928, when the New York Times and other newspapers reported that the 22-year-old princess was going to become engaged to Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, the eldest son of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and his first wife, the British-born Princess Margaret of Connaught.   The Crown Prince’s second  wife, Louise, was Theodora’s aunt.  Despite the family connections, the proposed engagement was  nothing more than mere rumor.
Finding husbands for the pretty, but poor Greek princesses, was proving to be difficult.
Much to everyone’s surprise, 16-year-old Princess Sophie was the first of the four sisters to marry.   In December 1930, she married Prince Christoph of Hesse, .
Two months later, Princess Cecilie married to Hereditary Prince Georg Donatus of Hesse.  In April 1931,   Margarita was wed to Gottfried, the 8th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
Dolla was the only one of the four sisters to not marry a descendant of Victoria.  On August 17, 1931, she was married to the Margrave of Baden.   Prince Berthold had succeeded his father, Prince Max, the last Chancellor of Imperial Germany, in 1929.
Berthold was also born in 1906.  He spoke English fluently, and studied at Oxford University.
The couple’s civil marriage took place on August 15, 1931 at the Neue Schloss in Baden-Baden.
Two days later, Dolla and Berthold were married in the schloss’ chapel.  Two marriage ceremonies were performed: Lutheran and Greek Orthodox.  Only “relatives and intimate friends” were present for the wedding, and the guests included Grand Duchess Hilda of Baden, Princess Marie of Baden, Queen Sophie of Greece, Crown Princess Louise of Sweden, Prince Waldemar of Denmark, the Duchess of Cumberland, the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses of Hesse and By Rhine and Mecklenburg.
Prince Andrew and Dolla’s three sisters were present, but Princess Alice, confined to a mental hospital, missed all four of her daughters’ weddings.
After the wedding, Crown Princess Louise wrote to a family friend: “I do hope Dolla will have a very happy life with Berthold because I think in some ways she expects more than her sisters.”   Dolla was once described as the most “correct” of the four sisters.
Eleven months after the wedding, Dolla gave birth to a daughter, who was christened Margarita Alice Thyra Viktoria Marie Louise Scholastica.  A son and heir, Maximilian Andreas Friedrich Gustav Ernst August Bernhard, was born in July 1933.   A second son, Prince Ludwig Wilhelm Georg Ernst Christoph, was born in March 1937.

House of Hohenlohe-Langenburg & of Wettin: Princess Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, The Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen
Feodora was born as the youngest of six children to Ernst I., The Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, and his wife Princess Feodora of Leiningen, the half-sister of Queen Victoria. Feodora’s older sister is Princess Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, The Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, who was the mother of the German Empress Augusta Victoria, who then again married the oldest son of Feodora’s and Adelheid’s cousin German Empress Victoria, Princess Royal.
Feodora was to married George II, The Duke of Saxe-Meiningen on October 23rd, 1858 at the age of only 17. She was completely unprepared for the role of a duchess and was also in constant competition with the deceased first wife of the duke, Princess Charlotte of Prussia, who by the way had also been a daughter of Feodora’s cousin Victoria, Princess Royal. Unlike Charlotte, Feodora was described as a spoiled girl that showed no interest at all in art or any other form of education. Her husband tried to educate her what was encouraged by Feodora’s mother as well but the duke soon realised that Feodora would never be as clever or witty as his first wife had been.
The Duke mainly married Feodora to provide his already existing children with a mother but the couple themselves would have three sons of their own. But after Prince Viktor’s, the youngest, death shortly after birth, Feodora preferred to stay away from Meiningen as much as possible.
Feodora died on February 10th, 1872, at the age of only 32. She had contracted scarlet fever in January the same year. Although she and her husband never had led a marriage of love, he was geniunely distraught when she got sick and sent telegrams to her family, often twice per day.
It can be theorized that Feodora’s sister Adelheid named her youngest daughter Princess Feodora of Schleswig-Holstein, who was born in 1874, after her. Two of her other nieces were called Feodora/e as well but as they were born years before her death it is more likely that they were named after their grandmother Princess Feodora of Leiningen .

Princess Alexandra (‘Sandra’) of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Prince Ernst (‘Erni’) Hohenlohe-Langenburg, 1896
“As to Sandra’s young man, I like him everyday more; he is really very nice, so simple, so comme il faut no laisser-aller at all, he is too well educated for that. They are the tenderest couple one can see; I think they are really even more ‘foolish’ than you were in the way of kissing and hugging (or hughing like you perhaps still continue to write it?) Sandra is not a bit shy and he is intensely in love with her and never takes his eyes off her.”
- Marie, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Marie, Crown Princess of Romania, 24th September 1895
“Her beloved Erni is coming back on Sunday and she jumps about with delight [...] I succeeded in making Erni H. read to us, which is an excellent occupation, instead of sitting together the whole day. But I think he only half likes it, as he is so [underlined] in love, that he only wants to sit and look at Sandra and has no thoughts for anything else. If you ask me, I think it rather cruel for him to putt off the marriage so long, for it is very hard for him to wait nearly a year.”
- 24th October 1895

Weddings of Spare’s Children Part 1: Alfred - 2nd son of Queen Victoria
The wedding of a child of Queen Elizabeth’s so called “spare” - Prince Andrew - got me wondering about the weddings of the children of other second in lines to the throne.  It’s a bit tricky to work out as pre Princess Charlotte, women were passed over for the crown - unless there were no male heirs in a family. So this list will focus on the weddings of children of the mostly male spares (excluding spares who went on to become King).
Children of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Second oldest son of Queen Victoria).
1.  Princess Marie married King Ferdinand I of Romania  (10th January 1892)

who: royal house and family of mecklenburg
Tumblr media
The present day Kingdom of Mecklenburg is made up of the historical Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the western part of the Province of Pomerania, and small portions of north-eastern Province of Brandenburg.
The Kingdom of Mecklenburg is the only surviving monarchy of the German Empire and one of three surviving monarchies from the Holy Roman Empire.
The House of Mecklenburg was founded by Pribislav, a prince of the Obotrites, a Slavic tribe, and first Prince of Mecklenburg, in 1167. Pribislav was one of the sons of Niklot, the furthest members of the House of Mecklenburg can trace their paternal ancestry. A statue of Niklot on horseback overlooks the main entrance to Schweriner Schloss.
The House of Mecklenburg are also known as The Obotrites or The Niklotings.
The House of Mecklenburg has provided monarchs to other kingdoms; Albert III of Mecklenburg reigned as King of Sweden from 1364 to 1386; and in the Netherlands, Juliana of the Netherlands, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin reigned from 1948 to 1980.
The House of Mecklenburg was elevated from Prince to Duke in 1347, then to Grand Duke in 1814 and finally King in 1919.
The House of Mecklenburg has ruled over Mecklenburg since 1167, over 850 years, making it the longest ruling dynasty in European history.
The House of Mecklenburg is presently divided into four branches:
Mecklenburg, an agnatic royal branch headed by Prince Klaus Wilhelm, who is also the most senior male in the entire House.
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, an agnatic ducal branch represented by Duchess Donata of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Prince Klaus Wilhelm will inherit the position as head of the Schwerin branch once Donata has died.
Mecklenburg-Strelitz, an agnatic ducal branch headed by Borwin, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a cognatic royal branch headed by Karolina Augusta I.
THE ROYAL HOUSE OF MECKLENBURG
The Royal House of Mecklenburg is limited to the children and male-line descendants of Heinrich Ludwig I and Karolina Augusta I, and the spouses of royal princes. These people hold the rank and style of Royal Highness and a large number of titles traditionally held by members of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Members of the Royal House are also members of the Royal Family, but the inverse is not always true.
THE ROYAL FAMILY OF MECKLENBURG
The Royal Family of Mecklenburg is limited to the children and grandchildren  of past and present monarchs of Mecklenburg and their spouses. These people may hold rank, styles and titles as members of the Royal House of Mecklenburg, through other royal or noble families, or be untitled individuals.

The Ducal branch of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin has died out in the male line, with only three Duchesses still living, and will eventually become extinct altogether. The Royal branch of the House of Mecklenburg continues among the descendants of Heinrich Ludwig I.
