Interview: Faisal Khan gives his 2020 tech predictions

It is my pleasure to interview Faisal Khan, a prolific Canada-based tech blogger and influencer. A fixture on Medium.com (he’s been nominated “Top Writer” in many topics), Faisal is the founder and editor of the Technicity publication which focuses on technical, scientific and financial knowledge sharing. We discussed what led him to become a respected figure in tech media; he also gave his thoughts on various topics such as the future of facial recognition and cryptocurrencies in 2020 and beyond.

Phil Siarri: Hi Faisal, it’s nice to finally connect since I’ve been following you for a while on Medium. Can you tell our audience a little bit about your professional background and what led you to become such a prolific writer?

Faisal Khan: Hello Phil, thank you for giving me this opportunity. It’s great to finally connect after following each other’s work on Medium. I have a background in both computer science and economics which is why you see me writing on a wide variety of topics from tech to finance. 

My writing career, so to say, started long before my interest in finance. I started the first internet magazine of Pakistan in 1998 and successfully managed it for 4 years before moving to Canada. I worked as Assistant Editor for an academic journal called Text Technology at McMaster University, before taking a break from writing in 2007. While doing different gigs, I started trading Forex in 2008, which continues to date. 

Self-learning is something that comes naturally to me and an interest in extensive reading on a wide variety of topics helps me keep up with the prolific blogging. I guess what I am trying to say is that... to write well, you need to read a lot.

PS: Let’s start with a hot topic. China is implementing mandatory facial recognition for all new mobile phone numbers. Do you think such sets a dangerous precedent? Do you think other countries, including western nations, would dare to roll out similar policies in the near future?

FK: Although I am a technology proponent and embrace exciting developments taking place in the field, I believe moving too fast without considering the implications of using controversial systems like facial recognition infringement on the privacy and civil liberties of people; especially considering that facial recognition systems have been found to be “racially biased” with their inability to correctly identify people of darker skin tones. 

China nonetheless continues the extensive use of such technology with 570 million CCTV cameras expected to be put in place by 2021 to score their citizens on social behavior. The West is looking to implement the same in public places like airports to streamline travel processes, but the approach has been a little more cautious after reports of inaccuracies in the facial recognition systems. The biggest example in this regard has been the banning of facial recognition in the tech hub of San Francisco. A few other jurisdictions have followed suit in the U.S. after this landmark decision. The gist of it is that more work needs to be done on facial recognition before people become comfortable with its use.

PS: You have written extensively about cryptocurrencies. 2019 has been a “cool off” year in terms of media coverage. What do you think is in store for 2020?

FK: A lot of media hype related to cryptocurrencies is unfortunately associated with the price action in digital assets like Bitcoin. 2019 saw a lot of twists and turns in cryptos as far as price action is concerned. The year started off with the longest bearish market to date, with the fortunes reversing in early Spring to mid Summer before they took another nosedive. 

The underlying blockchain technology, on the other hand, continues to make big strides in adoption with enterprise level projects coming to light and I expect this trend to continue in 2020 and beyond as the issues of scalability and privacy get addressed. Even cryptocurrencies are seeing a great influx of institutional interest with the launch of the Bakkt bitcoin physical futures platform. 

On the trading front, while digital currencies may remain under pressure price-wise in the short term, maturing market and increasing interest from investors is shaping a new digital asset class which is going to thrive in the long run.

PS: Do you think 2020 will be a big year in terms of smartphone shipments? A number of tech commentators seem to think so, given upcoming 5G roll-outs as well as the introduction of folding and other unorthodox devices.

FK: I believe companies like Samsung are ahead of the curve when it comes to incorporating 5G in the current smartphone ecosystem.
