Project Based Learning
It is what we do as art teachers, here's why it is so important!
There are so many hurdles for teachers and students in today's classroom. Excessive student absenteeism, low test scores, and student equity can all be improved through the implementation of Project Based Learning (PBL). When students count on EACH OTHER for advice and feedback, they show up. From 1997 to 2000 the percentage of fifth graders passing the VA Standards of Learning test increased in all areas due to the implementation of PBL. PBL has also helped narrow the gap in test scores between African American and white students. (Curtis, 2001).
Implementing PBL in a classroom can be challenging. The role of teacher changes from classroom leader and lector to classroom guide and facilitator. Students take ownership of their educational pursuits. As students take ownership they also begin to build 21st Century skills. Skills like personal and social responsibility, planning, critical thinking, reasoning, creativity, communication skills, understanding of others, and the ability to visualize and make decisions to foster their goals. (Person, 2007).
Tumblr media
According to the Buck Institute for Education Gold Standard for Project Based Learning there are seven essential design elements teachers can consider. 1. What is the problem or question? What standards are you trying to teach the students? 2. PBL calls for your students to engage in a sustained period of inquiry that reaches beyond the classroom walls. Researching and compiling data in a variety of ways, over a period of time as they begin the journey toward concept attainment. Students may create collaborative documents online. Teachers may take students on field trips, to museums, or planetariums in addition to working in the classroom, as you will see in the PBL examples to follow. This is in opposition to the traditional memorization and regurgitation of facts. What the students are looking to achieve (the problem or question) should be meaningful to them, or have 3. authenticity. In one example below you will see students longing to understand their classmate, who struggles with Cystic Fibrosis. In another example we see a group of students interested in the WWE begin to take interest in the stock market once they found out it was a publicly traded company. Authenticity shows the students that this is something that is important to them both in and OUTSIDE of school. We will see many example of students meeting with professionals throughout the PBL process, seeing how what they are learning IS applicable in the real world. For successful PBL students must have a voice and choice in their pursuit of this problem or question. Having a voice is the first step to promoting 4. ownership. It is this ownership of ideas that drive student attendance. They feel needed and heard, and when they do, they show up. Just like as adults we show up for our job, in PBL students may choose to begin a business, and for that, they will show up. Setting aside time for 5. reflection throughout the project is critical. Just like educators, students must 6. critique and revise their plan as they learn and grow. This is a great time for students to have the opportunity to meet with experts. We will see students in the following exemplars meeting with architects and scientists. (Armstrong, 2002) This is what leads to true and thorough understanding. And finally, when designing PBL students should be creating a 7. public product. Sharing something that, again, shows the community the concept they mastered is not just something they need to learn for school, but something that can be applied to the real world to make it a better place for all. (2023) Whether students are organizing a Math Challenge or Walk-a-thon, starting their own business, or collaborating with students from around the globe, PBL reaches beyond our classrooms. (Curtis, 2001)
In the videos below you will see examples of PBL. While each project meets most of the seven essential project design elements of the "Gold Standard" (2023) as discussed previously, you will see that the most challenging design elements are things that require a lot of work from the teacher. Educators will need to adjust to planning in a way they are not accustomed to. Setting aside time to critique and revise the project can be challenging, but it is just as important as defining the question or challenge. It often means allotting more time to a project than originally planned. Be flexible. PBL is worth it.

As you see in the video not all of the examples are reaching beyond the classroom in their production. It will be a challenge for educators, figuring what to create as a public project. Fortunately, we live in a time where 1:1 technology is readily available to almost all of our students. Technology is the bridge that offers us multiple ways to assess our students, as well as multiple avenues for sharing their ideas and creations with the public. Students working learning about the monarch migration were able to collaborate with over 6000 students across the globe to create a digital map of the butterflies journey. (Curtis, 2002)
Open student discussion will inevitably form the rest of the seven essential design elements. With frequent meetings and communication you will see that students are more than capable of being leaders in their own education.
Project Based Learning is the way of the future. It will entice our students to not only show up to school, but become active facilitators of their own learning. Learning will begin to reach beyond the classroom. And, while the role of teachers may be changing it becomes ever more important. We are their guide not only within our isolated classrooms, but their guide as they explore our world.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
Project-based learning (PBL) has emerged as a powerful method that provides students with an opportunity to actively participate in their education, develop critical thinking skills, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.
Project-based learning is an educational approach that immerses students in an interdisciplinary learning experience that is centered around the completion of a meaningful project. PBL encourages students to actively explore complex problems, work collaboratively, and valuable outcomes.
Projects are designed to address real-world issues or challenges, enabling students to see the practical applications of their learning. Students engage in in-depth research, investigation, and problem-solving, encouraging them to ask questions, seek answers, and explore different perspectives.
PBL promotes collaboration and teamwork as students work together in groups, fostering communication, cooperation, and the development of essential interpersonal skills. PBL empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey by allowing them to make decisions, set goals, and take responsibility for their projects. It emphasizes the importance of reflection and feedback, allowing students to critically assess their work, learn from mistakes, and refine their understanding.
Project-based learning equips students with essential lifelong learning skills such as research, self-direction, adaptability, and critical evaluation of information. These skills empower them to become independent learners capable of navigating the challenges of the future. It enables students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, bridging the gap between the classroom and the outside world. This connection enhances the transferability of skills and knowledge, preparing students for future careers.
As educators, embracing project-based learning can unleash the full potential of our students and empower them to become lifelong learners, ready to tackle the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
