The owner of the bike, Takuma Koga, who's here for the race at Irwindale Speedway this weekend stopped by to see the progress. Very inspiring.

•

週末アーウィンデール・スピードウェイでのレースを控えて来米���の古賀氏。忙しいスケジュールの中、経過を見に寄ってくださった。最高に似合う一台になるよう、引き続き気持ちを込めてノリノリで進めていくぞ！と刺激をいただいた木村氏なのであった。

SKELTONIZE…

- The beginning of the new journey -

Taking the transmission and the engine out from the skeleton shovel. It’s a backbreaking work but he does everything himself because “I can still do it myself,” he says. And that way he can grasp everything about the bike and process and that’s very important to him. Of course, he does outsource on the things he can not do himself like metal plating, powder coating, seat covering, etc. but he won't ask to do it if he doesn't know what he wants.

Anyway, now it's completely in pieces, I can't wait to see what happens next!

スケルトン状態のショベル・プロジェクトからトランスミッションとエンジンをおろす。こういう力仕事は年々骨身に染みてくる作業ではありますが、自分で出来るうちは全部自分で。まあ、他にやる人がいないんだから当たり前だけど、自分でやるということで、そのバイクや制作過程をぜーんぶ把��できる、ということが重要なんだって。もちろん自分じゃできないことを外にお願いすることもあるけれど、こうしたいというのがはっきりしていなければ頼めないし、頼まない。

普段は90%以上曖昧で出来ているのでは？と思えるほどなんでもどうでもいい派の木村氏、ものを作るとなると別人格を出してきますな。さて、これがどうなっていくのかとても楽しみ！

A HEADLIGHT SAGA…

Now Shinya’s thinking about what kind of headlight he's gonna use for the shovel project and how he’s gonna put it. Instead of bringing ideas to sketch on paper, he starts making them by cutting, welding, and grinding sheet metals. So this will be his sketch.

•

ショベルプロジェクトTK、ヘッドライトとその周りをどうするか考え中。金属を切ったりくっつけたり削ったりしながら、紙にスケッチを描く感覚で頭の中の曖昧なイメージをどんどん形にしていく。はっきりくっきりしたイメージが浮かんでいることはあまりないらしい。とにかく手が先に動いちゃうらしい。

I thought it was pretty cool...

おお、いいんじゃない❓と思ったけど…

However, Shinya thought this was not it. So he's going to hang it somewhere in the workshop 😝 No matter how much time and effort he put into it, if he doesn’t feel right about it, he won’t use it. Ok, next!

あっさりボツだそうです💦 せっかく作ったのにーとか、時間かけたのにーとかは関係ない。「これは違う」「これじゃない」と思ったら、潔く。陶芸家のようにガシャンと壊したりせず、針金でチャボのどこかに吊るすってところが、モッタイナイ星人の木村氏らしいですな。はい��次！

DECISIONS, DECISIONS...

さて、ショベルプロジェクトTK。ハンドルをどうするのか、おそらく頭の中で考え中の模様。

At the gym. He found an exercise equipment handlebars, removed it, and was mumbling something. I knew he was still thinking about the handlebars for the shovel project but others didn't 😅 Very scary, right?

スポーツジムにて。器具に付いていたハンドルを外しちゃってブツブツ言っていた💦　怖い💦　引き続きショベルのハンドルのこと考えてるんだろうなって分かっている筆者が見ても怖かった😅

Back to the shop.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE...

The headlight is one of the important factors to affect the front face of the motorbike. Now Shinya is picking a headlight for the shovel project again.

•

ヘッドライトというのは、バイクの正面の顔を決める大きな要素。ショベルプロジェクトTKのシュッとした顔のフロントカウルを制作するも、あっさりボツにした木村氏。再び顔選びに戻る。

•

Trying on different headlights to fill his imagination.

•

色んなヘッドライトをあててみて、想像を膨らませる。

After all, Shinya picked this one and made some brackets for it. “This one looks more natural and matches with these organic front forks, “ he says.

•

そしてこのヘッドライトをチョイス。ブラケットを作って装着。確かにこっちの方がマンモスの骨　(フロントフォークのバックレッグ) の有機的な雰囲気が引き立つ！

SEAT...

To reboot his mind, Shinya decided not to think about the headlight visor or anything around the headlight for a while. So he moved on to make a seat pan.

•

ヘッドライト周りのことをいったんリセットしたいので、まったく別のことを考えよう。ということでまずはシートパンを切り出す。

And then putting foams to it and shaping with a grinder.

•

そしてスポンジを貼って削りながら形を整えてゆく。

It will be covered anyway but wish the foam wasn't blue 😌 Oh, well...

•

どうせ革を貼るからいいけど、青いスポンジにドッキリしちゃう。黒いの探そう💦

Shinya will send the seat pan to the leather guy after a fitting session with the owner soon.

•

座ってポジションをみる。近いうちにオーナーにも跨ってもらってバランスを確認したら、シートのデザインを考えて、シート屋さんに出す。

THE FRAME AND PARTS ARE BACK...

from poaweder coating. So the empty platform for the shovelhead project became lively again.

フレームや小さいパーツがパウダーコートから戻って来た。ショベルプロジェクトTKの台の上がまた賑やかになって嬉しい。

Time to reassemble. Shinya works pretty fast because he can’t wait to see it back together.

•

He chose flat black with texture.

It took a while this time for Shinya to hit upon a good idea around the headlight area but once he decides what to do, he's unstoppable.

SHOVELHEAD,

THE NEW PROJECT…

The next new and exciting project will be based on a shovelhead. It's been a while since the last time Shinya worked and rode a shovel so first, he took it for a ride. To ride while thinking about the future owner is a very important ritual for Shinya before he starts the project.

とてもスペシャルでエキサイティングな新プロジェクトはショベルベース。アメリカに移ってからは記念すべき初ショベル。まずはオーナーのことを考えながらベース車に乗ってみる。これが始める前のとても大切なひとときらしい。

とても感じが良くて最高。

As soon as something comes to Shinya’s mind, no one can stop him. He just kept dismantling the donor bike until it became a skeleton 💀

乗って戻って来たら、もうすぐに始めたくてうずうず。何かが浮かんでそれが消えちゃう前に早く形にしたいのかなーと思うくらい、ものすごい集中力でベース車をバラし始める。

THE TAILLIGHT TURNS ON…

The Shovelhead project. Polishing the tail section. Shinya wants to see it polished at one point and then decide if he wants to paint it or not.

ショベルプロジェクトTK。テイルカウルをバフ掛け中。とにかく一旦ポリッシュした姿を見たいのだそう。それから色を入れるのかラインを入れるのか、全部ペイントするのかなどを決めるらしい。
