Beyond the Mind: Vasugupta’s Blueprint for Pure Awareness
Tumblr media
Imagine a sky so vast that even clouds dare not stay. This is the sky Vasugupta invited seekers to glimpse — the sky of Pure Awareness. In his Shiva Sutras, Vasugupta didn’t hand over doctrines or beliefs; he handed over an invitation to remember who you are, beyond the drama of thoughts and emotions.
Kashmiri Shaivism, with its poetic non-duality, teaches us: You are not your mind. The mind is a tool, a craftsman’s chisel, but not the sculptor. The real sculptor is Awareness — unshaken, unborn, and eternal.
The mind builds walls, defining reality through ideas of success, failure, joy, and suffering. Vasugupta whispers a cosmic prank: These walls are illusions. What you are searching for has been observing you all along — the Supreme Observer within, the Pure Awareness.
Pure Awareness is not an altered state; it’s your natural state, hidden under the clutter of identification. You don’t need to become anything. You only need to stop becoming.
When you stand beyond the mind, duality dissolves. You don’t see the world as good or bad, rich or poor, sacred or profane. Everything is just... IS — perfectly complete. Vasugupta’s blueprint isn’t a guide for reaching heaven but for realizing heaven is the ground beneath your feet.
When you stop entertaining the mind’s noise, a subtle transformation happens. You become transparent, like clear water. The world still moves, but you are unmoved, fully engaged yet untouched.
The gift of Vasugupta’s Sutras is not intellectual understanding but experiential immersion. When you abide in Pure Awareness, even action becomes non-action. You function with flow, not force. You love without attachment. You live without resistance.
Practical Toolkit: Tuning Into Pure Awareness Daily
Silence Before Sunrise: Each morning, before touching your phone or agenda, sit in silence for 5 minutes. Observe thoughts like clouds passing. No judgment. No effort.
Witnessing Breath Practice: While walking, eating, or resting, gently shift focus to the witness of your breath — not the breath itself, but the one observing it. This detaches you from compulsive thinking.
Mind-Label Pause: Whenever overwhelmed, label the moment: "Mind." This short-circuits mental chatter and instantly reconnects you to Awareness.
Sacred Stop Ritual: Pick one moment daily — staring at the sky, touching a leaf, or washing your hands — and stop fully. Breathe. Feel. Experience. Let go of the "I" and dwell in the Now.
Shiva Sutra Mantra Reflection: Reflect daily on this essence: "Caitanyam Atma" — Consciousness is the Self. Whisper it and let it ripple through your being.
Vasugupta’s message was clear: Don’t seek awareness. Be it. When the mind stops seeking, the Self reveals itself. Awareness isn’t a goal at the mountain’s peak; it’s the ground you’ve always stood on. The realization of this is the end of suffering and the beginning of boundless freedom.
You are not a wave lost in the ocean. You are the ocean watching the waves.
