Cats & dogs!

I already made one big change for the cats - got them back on a 2/3 wet food diet. I had switched to kibble only again for a while due to being overwhelmed and needing things to be simpler. But they both gained weight, especially Shilo, so I got us back on the horse. It's been a couple months now I think? And they've already both lost weight & look much better, so I'm pleased.

They get dry food in the mornings for ease before work, then wet food when I get home & again before bed. It seems to be working well! Though they're still picky assholes and won't eat pate food. They're currently getting Friskies, Fancy Feast, American Journey, and Nulo, and get Purina One for kibble. Seems to be working!

I do want to try adding some hanging planters to the run for them as well, for different edible plants. I'll probably just start with a couple and see if it'll work - I think there's a heavy risk of Spring peeing on them, sigh. I still want to add shelves to the run for them as well, but that may wait for now - the next major run renovation I want to do is switching to solid plastic roof panels instead of the mesh fencing we have now.

I'm forever trying to get myself into a better routine for training & exercise with the dogs. It's a constant struggle tbh, but I keep working on it, making plans, making different plans, and trying again.

One big thing I want to work on this year, is make a platform or something to use as a cooperative care station. It'll be slow going, but I want to start giving them the option to work with me on it in the evenings. I'm hoping to increase the range of handling I can do with Emma, with a bonus of less stressful handling to check body parts, do nails, etc, for the other two as well. I'd really like to do more with Spring's poor teeth, so this would really help towards that.

I'm also considering making a more permanent potty station, similar to a litter box, for the chihuahuas to use in the garage. But that's still very much just an idea & needs more planning to see if I can make what I have in mind, if it'll fit, how easy it will be to maintain, if they'll even use it, and how much it'll cost. So we'll see!

I’m gonna get up on a bit of a soap box here but... apparently hot take, PETS ARE LUXURIES! So many people try and cheap out on food, especially for their dogs and cats, and no matter how species-inappropriate it is will just say “well I can only afford the super cheap stuff”. Then I’m sorry but you cannot afford the animal.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They require a high moisture, full meat diet. There are multiple studies that show a mainly kibble diet is BAD for them and contributes to kidney, liver, and urinary issues due to constant dehydration from the low moisture diet they are on when on kibble! At the very least you should be feeding mostly wet food or feeding meals and hydrating your kibble!

But the sheer amount of people who justify feeding terrible, low-quality, species inappropriate kibble(I’m talking Kibble n Bits, Purina food, Friskies, etc etc) because it’s all they can afford.... then you cannot afford a cat! Yes they are a domestic species but they are still CARNIVORES! If you cannot afford to give them a carnivorous diet then you cannot afford a cat!! A majority of kibble contain high amounts of grains and plant fillers that cats straight up cannot digest and that just end up turned into fat! And many grain free kibbles rely on pease, lentils, and/or other legumes which are also bad for your kitty in the long run! They were not meant to eat dry bites of grain and plant filler! If you can’t afford to feed them something at LEAST high-protein with low amounts of plant filler you cannot afford a cat!! Same with dogs! Granted they’re facultative carnivores not obligate carnivores like cats, so you can get away with more plant matter. But they are still CARNIVORES!! If you can only afford Ol Roy or Gravy Train or justify it by going “not everyone can afford the expensive stuff!!” YOU CANNOT AFFORD A DOG!!! Pets are LUXURIES!! It is up to us as their owners and caretakers to do what’s BEST for them NOT what’s cheapest and most convenient for us!! Trying to feed a carnivore a diet high in plants would be like trying to make a rabbit eat meat-based food! Will the animal survive? Sure. But that doesn’t mean what it’s eating is at all appropriate for its species. And just because something is marketed towards that species doesn’t mean it’s good for them!!

And I feel like people have gotten a LOT more lax about dog and cat care as opposed to like every other species in the pet world simply because they’re so common. The same people who will feed their cat kibbles n bits will take great lengths to make sure their exotics get good high quality food and I just.... will NEVER get how they don’t see the double standard. It’s great your beardie gets fresh veggies and fruits and a variety of feeder insects! As he should! But your cat is also overweight eating one of the worst foods on the market!

what food do you feed your cats? i feed mine hills science diet for her dry food/she also eats wet, and my vet said its good because it has lifetime trials and research. but on the internet people say hills science/purina etc sponsor vets and they contain too much non-meat fillers?

idk, i'm gonna go with the vet on this one. remember, this is a person you're already trusting with the health and welfare of your cat; why wouldn't you trust their word about diet over the words of internet strangers? (i'm absolutely including myself in the category of 'internet stranger', ftr).

more seriously, my cats eat friskies wet food (except for Saia; she gets a little american journey kibble bc she's picky and won't eat without her crunchies). i'm a pretty firm believer in 'the best food for your cat is the one they'll eat, can digest, and that you can afford'. For some cats, that's meow mix and that's fine.

is there a certain cat food brand you recommend for cat health?

Obviously different cats have different needs, and you should check with your vet if you’re going to make a major change in a pet’s diet, but you can find unbiased cat food reviews on CatFoodDB which I always check before buying cat food anymore. 

The ones I can find in most ordinary grocery stores (and not a specialty store or pet store specifically) are Beyond WILD and occasionally Pure Harmony, both of which my cat likes (she prefers wet food to dry food, but she gets a mix at the recommendation of her vet). I can find these at Target or HyVee. (Beyond WILD is scored 8/10 paws on this site, which is higher than most non-specialty brands.) 

Most of the cheap brands I would have bought without the site are rated very low, 2-4 paws. Oof. A lot of popular brands like 9Lives, Meow Mix, Friskies, and even Purina Cat Chow (which is made by the same company as Beyond WILD) are not actually particularly nutritious or good for your cat (AND, weirdly enough, a lot of brands have massive variety in quality even just between different products. One flavor of pate might rate 3 stars while another flavor rates 6, because the ingredients are so different.)

I also tend to compare any analysis by CatFoodDB to a second source that confirms what they’ve said, and generally it’s been a fairly accurate resource.

if a vet ever tries to sell you Hill's... don't fall for it it's a fuckin scam. I know hills wet cat food specifically isn't good for cats at all. do your own research and try out some stuff. here's some things to know if you're looking for cat food

1. first off this is about wet cat food. cats tend to not drink much water on their own, and very many cats on a dry food diet are chronically dehydrated. I can't recommend switching to wet cat food enough. you can get a multi-size plastic lid that fits onto the cans so you can easily just portion out and put what's left in the fridge.

2. look for protein in the first few ingredients. it doesn't matter if it's "chicken" or "chicken by-product", by-product is perfectly fine. try and pick out things that DONT have a grain (corn,soy,wheat,etc) (which is just unhealthy filler, for cats) in the first five ingredients at least. and avoid anything with "gravy". gravy is starches. starches are carbs.cats don't need carbs

3. try and find a "GUARANTEED ANALYSIS", often not available in product descriptions, but sometimes available on websites via third parties who've compiled tons of different brands' analyses. also, chewy.com is good for this - they tend to have a guaranteed analysis available for most of the food they sell through the site. if a brand makes their analyses particularly hard to get a hold of, they're not very trustworthy.

4. the analyses are broken down into 3 things you're looking for usually, which is Protein, Fat, and Carb percentages. you want lots of protein, some fat, and as little carb as possible. a very good cat food will look something like 70/20/0, but it may also be expensive. most cheaper options that still won't hurt are more along the lines of 40/50/2. it's much better to go with this than one like 50/20/10. avoid carbs as much as possible. your cat is a carnivore.

5.when you're feeding wet food, you obviously can't free feed. see the specific food's feeding instructions - it will often be something like "feed 5 oz per 8lbs", so if your cat is 8 pounds and the food is a 5 oz can, you'll be feeding them one can a day. you can space that out over multiple feedings. but! cats are individual, and these portions won't always fit. pay attention to how much your cat eats and leaves behind, how hungry they seem throughout the day, and whether or not their current weight is a healthy one (this usually factors in to tweaking the portions, to help them slim.) USUALLY cats, once they've realized they're not on a free feeding schedule anymore, will learn to eat as much as they need, and if there's still food leftover on their plate you can start slimming down portions a bit

6. it can be difficult to try and figure out how much money will be spent weekly on a wet food diet, bc figuring out the portions in the first place can be complicated and prices can vary by where you're buying them. I will say though that a pack of Purina Friskies Poultry Platter can be currently bought off chewy for 12 cans for $11, measuring out to, with my cats schedule, 80 cents a day. and while it's certainly not a 70/20/0, it's 35/60/5, which is on the lower end of O.K. chewy.com also has an autoship feature that saves you 5% off each order I think, and you can cancel it immediately after your first order goes through and still get that discount.

7. for the sake of your own wallet pay attention to the can sizes and feeding portions. some foods will try and get you with "20 cans for $15!" but the cans are single servings, 4 servings/day. that's $15 for 5 days. that's not a good deal.

Riley, a 5th grader at SJES, is working with RappCats for his service project.

RappCats is a volunteer organization working to help the stray, abused, abandoned, and injured cats of Rappahannock County. They assist with low-cost spay/neuter, veterinary care, and finding temporary and permanent homes.

They also operate the RappCats Adoption Center, a cageless, no-kill facility. They rely entirely on donations to support their operation.

This January, Riley will be collecting items from the organization’s wish list to take to them. Please help if you can. A copy of the list can be found on the bulletin board outside the Parish Hall.
