25. “You don’t think you went maybe a bit overboard?”!!!!

Evan stared around their room. It looked like Rodney had rigged Hallmark to explode and it had, all over his room. He could see pink hearts everywhere. His walls had pink streamers over them and there were enough roses sitting on his desk Evan was surprised David hadn't shown up at him to give him another rant on killing flowers for vanity.

Even the bedspread hadn't been spared. The normally nice, calm, flannel-adjacent blue duvet Evan had traded for on PX2-324 had been replaced by something pink. With flowers. In the shapes of hearts.

And in the middle stood Rodney, wearing his self-described date clothes, wringing his hands and looking like he had when he had asked Evan out. That had been eight months and sixteen major crisis ago. He didn't really know why Rodney was nervous, but it was making him nervous as well.

"Um..." Evan said as he stepped into the room fully, letting the door close behind him and block the view from everyone.

"It's Valentine's Day!" Rodney said, his voice a pitch higher than normal.

"I know," Evan said, still staring around the room, waiting for his brain to come back online so he start to try and figure out what was happening.

"And it's our first Valentines Day! Together! As a couple! Who are dating! And living together!"

Realization struck Evan like a blow to his head and he found himself charmed, amused and slightly frustrated in equal measures. "And you don't think you went maybe a bit overboard?" he asked gently.

Perhaps not gently enough as Rodney's face fell for a second before his stuck his chin up in a way Evan knew spelled an oncoming argument. "Look, I appreciate it," Evan said quickly, hoping to forestall any argument. It was Valentine's day. "But...it's a lot? And I'm not sure....why...you did this?"

Rodney's chin came down a fraction, as did Evan's shoulders. "I just lo-like you, a lot. And I know...I'm not the easiest person to live with but this...this is working. I think. And I want it to keep working because I'm not getting any younger and I know I can be a lot and I don't communicate well, and I tend to be overbearing and very negative..."

Evan stared as Rodney kept talking, listing all of his negative traits and Evan wanted to go find Carter, have her build a time machine and go back in time and find out the names of each person who had told Rodney this because it sounded like a break up list, and while none of them were wrong, they all missed the biggest picture. Of how much Rodney was willing to try, to let himself be vulnerable and to always be honest, which in the SGC where secrets were second nature, was something to be cherished.

"Rodney."

Evan didn't know what his voice sounded like but he felt the hitch in his throat. Rodney's face fell, his mouth turning down into a frown. "It's too much, isn't it?" Rodney said, looking around the room, blue eyes wide as if he were seeing it for the first time.

"No," Evan said, stepping across the room and trying not to slip on the rose petals on the ground. He stopped in front of Rodney. "Okay, it is a lot, but it's not a bad thing, okay? I didn't need any of this, but I do appreciate the thought, okay."

"I just want this to work," Rodney said, eyes darting around the room instead of looking at Evan. "I know I'm not..."

"Hey," Evan said, grabbing Rodney's arm and tugging him closer to pull him into a hug, resting their foreheads together. "Remember, I knew you at the SGC. Way before all of this. I know what you're like, I knew what I was getting into. And I still asked you to move in after six months together. I'm in this as well. And I know I'm not perfect."

As evidenced by the blow-up argument when Evan had spilled paint over one of Rodney's laptops that had left all of Atlantis walking on eggshells until they had worked through it.

"Yes, you are."

"Appreciate it, but I'm really not," Evan said, hugging Rodney tighter.

Rodney finally relaxed, leaning a little bit more against Evan. "It's a lot," he admitted.

"It really is. Please tell me you didn't get rid of the old bedspread."

"No, its under that one."

Evan carefully didn't sigh in relief. "Okay. So why don't we clean all of this up, grab dinner and watch something."

"Okay," Rodney said, kissing him before he pulled back and looked around the room, nose wrinkling. "I don't remember buying this much."

"Panic tends to do that," Evan said, looking around as well. "What are we going to do with all of this?"

"Wanna call Parrish and have him take the flowers?" Rodney asked, his nose wrinkling as if his allergies had just realized how close he was to pollen.

"No," Evan said, emphatically.

Rodney hummed before he grinned suddenly. "John's on the mainland. He's hiding until Valentine's day is over. Wanna move everything into his room and say it's from a secret admirer?"

Evan thought about the stack of paper Sheppard had left him with. "We're gonna need help."

"Ronon will help."

"Alright then, call him and we'll move it all over."

Rodney paused. "Not everything. I have a box of those chocolates from France you like. And there's a basket of uh...massage oil. And ...things."

Evan raised his eyebrows. "Right, that can stay, everything else," he said pulling back, suddenly a lot more interested in the day. "Hurry up and call Ronon so we can celebrate Valentine's Day."
