SDG 4, Al Qarawiyin, semi public university
Public
1/3rd national
1/3 ISESCO (53 countries)
Private
1/3 international (non ISESCO)
I guess the staff and faculty should be the same as students repartitions, it's huge, a small city with housing ranging from individual pavillons to apartments
It has an extensive housing capacity, 2/3rd's of its students, staff and faculty are from abroad
Lots of green spaces, right now I am looking at Sefrou, 32 min 28.8km from Fes
The area is equivalent to a square of 11.4 km or 12950 hectares or 130km² in total, 60% of the superficy is green spaces or 78M square meters, for a total built superficy of 52M sqm
It has tramways, a stadium and sports complex with covered pools, supermarkets and a hospital, and safety is a high priority, access is badging based including for cars, even its general services are large, atleast that is the experiment
And I think it is worthwhile to have such a large secure campus and not just for Morocco for the international higher education industry as a whole, maybe even it will be very visited by foreign delegations as a place of excellence in studies, modern, safe lots of campus police day and night, and integrated, basically nobody else has business there except students faculty and staff
So yes it is a small city but it is far from being mild on security, that is why it is a square to start with since it is enclosed, also the large 10 lanes highway that we see may be its main road axis, 5 inbound 5 outbound, there's not too much of that mostly tramways since the goal is to be efficient in clean transportation
It has roads since it is that large, but not in the sense of having roads everywhere, tramways do account for most of its transportation, but above all safe badges are mandatory and can be required at any time, possibly you cannot access many buildings without it
Possibly, certain even, that it is also the tramway pass, packaging it with the tuition makes sense and finances the tramway, it'is more straightforward that you need it also for transportation, where electric buses have a role to play as well

With the international footprint in mind that is past ISESCO member countries, it was to dispose of an international faculty and staff and welcome students from all over the world, and capitalize on the existing institution that is Al Qarawiyin, where higher education is a competitive sector internationally, and we know that quality staff and faculty can be procured nationally but also internationally providing that we interest them in an exceptional educational environment and infrastructure, ie a campus, and where the conjunction of all these elements should attract national students, ISESCO member states students and international, non ISESCO, studects

Last but not least, and in fact it came first we had to look into our educational assets, it so happens that Morocco disposes of the oldest continuously running university in the world, Al Qarawiyin is world famous and needs no introduction, since 859 it has opened its doors to students from as far as England granting them tutions, at the time and except for Al Azhar it was unheard of, we may consider it truly as one of the precursor institutions of the globalization movement, truly unique also in the sense that it was financed and funded by a woman Fatima Al Fihriya

One thousand and sixty tree years, is what separates from 859 when Al Qarawiyin was first established by Fatima Bint Mohammed Al Fihriya as a mosque and a madrassa
That is to say that Al Qarawiyin holds in itself an immense potential to become a worldwide leading educational institution as it was also the first, an immense potential that we have tried to fulfill within this case study, so that Al Qarawiyin continues for the centuries ahead to be an exceptional learning place, improved by its incrased scope to englobe all academic fields
Situated surely near Fes because of the large size of its campus, Al Qarawiyin has been and continues to be Morocco's and by extension the Arabo Islamic world's contribution to academic studies, sciences and culture, since more than a thousand years ago, in present days, and for the future
We can only round up this exceptional case study with the proposition of a Fatima Al Fihriya Prize for Arts, Sciences, and Civilizations, that is meant to become Arabo Islamic equivalent of the Nobel Prize both in scale, mediatic coverage and prize money

As we can see it is quite extensive, and it is not only the central square but the buildings around it as well
The aim is to strengthen the position of Fes as an excellence in studies destination and one of the world’s leading cultural cities, which it never ceased to be and is recognized by the UNESCO
The university also host an annual worldwide chess event, with valuable prizes
Last but not least Al Qarawiyin University is also the grounds of a Cultural Arabo Islamic Studies Center in partnership with UNESCO, with Master and Phd Diplomas that are delivered jointly by AQU and UNESCO
Endowed with an annual budget of 10 Million USD, this center is aiming at being an excellence center in Arabo Islamic studies and research
As such it also sponsors research, studies and publications in a number of partner institutions in the Arabo Islamic world
And we find that playing this important role this center is also a partner and educational institution of ISESCO
So should be AQU as a whole
Thank you for your attention
