Why is it that scientist & astronomers can discover so far into the universe and find out our first supernovas but our oceans are about 80% undiscovered? We have the technology to see light years away but no technology to withstand the pressure underwater ?

1. It’s really really big. It’s 70% of the Earth’s surface, so there’s more than twice as much ocean surface as there is land. And the deepest parts of the ocean are deeper than the heights of the highest mountains. In theory, you could sink Mount Everest in the Marianas Trench and it wouldn’t break the surface. The ocean is big. Even a large ship can’t explore more than a tiny bit of the ocean at a time.

2. A lot of it is far away from the nearest land. Sending a support ship out for weeks with fuel, food, a crew who can sail it, and a support staff and shore facilities gets expensive—and that’s before the research even starts. Just as an example: to operate Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute’s research submersible Alvin, and its support ship R/V Atlantis, costs $45,000 per day.

3. We can’t breathe down there. Sending people down there requires a lot of life support gear. Alvin can dive to three miles (4500 m), but dives usually last less than ten hours, with maybe five hours of working time—it might take two hours just to get down to working depth, and two to rise to the surface again. (And there’s no room for a toilet.)

4. Did I mention it’s really really deep? This means that

a. Sending a diver down means you can’t go down very far without having to deal with fun little medical issues like nitrogen embolisms (the “bends”). There are ways to avoid that, but they get expensive.

b. Sending anything down means you have to design it so that it doesn’t get crushed like a beer can against my grandmother’s forehead. One of the fun things that people who get to dive on the Alvin do is decorate large styrofoam cups with permanent markers. The cups are kept on the outside of the Alvin as it goes down. . . when they come up, they’re hard as a rock and about the size of a shotglass. Now imagine that happening to your lungs. . .

c. Sending anything down means a non-zero chance that you’ll never see it again. Cables can snap, wires can get cut, seals can fail, and anything can go on the fritz. My major professor, who has done a lot of ocean exploration in his day, used to say that you should never let anything down into the ocean that you can’t bear to lose. He once talked about being on a ship—I’m not sure which—when a six-figure ocean probe went over the side and was never seen again. That happens.

It’s also really really cold—close to 0°C. That’s not a serious obstacle, but it does mean anything you send down there has to be engineered to function at freezing temperatures.

5. A surprisingly large part of the deep ocean floor is called the abyssal plain: it’s almost completely flat, covered in fine sediment, and, while not absolutely barren of life, not very productive. Think about this: unless you’re near a hydrothermal vent or some weird and wild energy source like that, the only source of food and energy in the deep ocean is the dead plants and animals and poop that slowly rains down from the photic zone (where there’s sunlight). That’s called “marine snow”, and it’s ultimately the only support for most deep-sea ecosystems—and there’s not enough to support a very rich and diverse ecosystem in most areas. That’s one reason why most deep-sea creatures are slow and sluggish and mostly gelatinous; there’s just not enough energy in the food web to support fast-attack predators. So much of the deep ocean isn’t a priority for exploration because it doesn’t look all that interesting. (Not that it wouldn’t be interesting, but we have to prioritize.)

6. We do explore the ocean. Universities, governments, militaries, and private foundations all maintain oceanographic research vessels, submersibles, and unmanned remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). There are also less direct ways of exploring the oceans, like sonar to map the contours of the ocean floor, remote sensing from satellites, or even attaching radiotransmitters to migrating whales, turtles, and other animals. We’ve got a good and constantly growing sense of what’s down there (although many surprises await, I’m sure). But exploring every last inch of the ocean floor would take an extremely long time, cost a huge sum of money, and wouldn’t necessarily be cost-effective.

21 Av - R’ Chaim Soloveichik - 1918

Today is the 21st day of the month of Av. On this day in 1918, R’ Chaim Soloveichik passed away. R’ Chaim, as he is belovedly known, was the son of R’ Yosef Dov Solovechick, better known by the title of his monumental work, the Beis HaLevi. R’ Chaim spent his early years as a lecturer at the Volozoner Yeshiva which was known as the Grandmother of all the Yeshivas. His wife’s grandfather, R’ Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (the Netziv) was the Dean. In 1892, the Netziv made the difficult decision to close the Yeshiva due to impossible restrictions that the Russian Government was putting on the Institution. At that point, R’ Chaim took over for his father as the Chief Rabbi of the town of Brisk in modern-day Belarus. He continued to develop his highly analytical form of Talmud study that included a heavy focus on the legal writings of Maimonides. This became known as the ‘Brisker Derech.’

R’ Chaim had three sons. One was R’ Yitzchak Zev, known as the Brisker Rov, who moved to Israel and started the chain of Brisker Yeshivos. Another was R’ Moshe who moved to America to become a Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University in New York. Today, the Brisker Yeshivos, run by his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, are considered the most elite in the world

Today is MBARI's 36th anniversary! To celebrate, we are sharing the story of MBARI's R/V Western Flyer.

David Packard believed that addressing the challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one independent in spirit and collaborative by design. He founded MBARI on the core principle of scientists, engineers, and marine operations working in equal partnership to develop innovative marine technology. The research vessel Western Flyer embodied MBARI’s willingness to think big, be bold, and invest in long-term outcomes.

Constructed in 1996 with a unique twin hull design, the 117-foot SWATH vessel represented David Packard’s vision of developing innovative new platforms to better access and explore the ocean. SWATH, which stands for small waterplane area twin hull, means the ship is much more stable than more common monohulled vessels. This stability, combined with a specially constructed moonpool at the center of the vessel, made the ship an ideal platform to deploy, operate, and recover remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). For much of its time at MBARI the Western Flyer worked together with the Doc Ricketts, MBARI’s ROV capable of exploring to depths of 4,000 meters (2.5 miles).

The Western Flyer was instrumental to many of MBARI’s achievements: from studying ecosystems that could give insights into the impacts of climate change on the ocean, to identifying more than 200 new species—including a crown jelly, a harp sponge, and an incredible bone-eating worm named Osedax westernflyer in honor of the ship itself. During its quarter-century at MBARI, the Western Flyer also traveled to conduct research beyond its home base of Monterey Bay, venturing northwards to sites such as the Pacific Northwest, and southwards to places like Hawaii and Mexico’s Gulf of California.

After 25 years of serving as MBARI’s flagship research vessel, the Western Flyer has begun a new chapter in education. MBARI granted the ship to the University of South Florida, which hosts the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO), for use as a sailing classroom. FIO will provide students with a unique mix of at-sea and on-shore training and mentoring to build ocean science, engineering, and maritime trade skills. The new program will focus on engaging students from historically black colleges and universities, minority-serving institutions, and tribal colleges, providing an opportunity for students of diverse backgrounds and experiences to learn more about careers in ocean science, engineering, and marine operations. "ADMITTED GUILT ON TWO CHARGES," Hamilton Spectator. March 19, 1913. Page 11. --- Youths Arrested at the Falls Broke Into Shops ---- Plooard's Record Got Him a Three Year Term ---- William Case Confessed to Theft of $90 ---- Edward Watt, 247 Duke street, and Charles Stratwick, West Hamilton, the two youths brought back from Niagara Falls last night by Detectives Cameron and Goodman to answer a charge of shopbreaking and theft preferred against them by Hayes & Richards, King street west tobacco dealers, were arraigned at court this morning and pleaded guilty to the charge. It is alleged they procured $80. A second charge of shop-breaking and theft was laid against the pair by Daniel Keith, the proprietor of a tobacco store on Locke street. They also pleaded guilty to this charge, and were remanded until tomorrow morning for sentence. Richard Hammill, 83 Poulette street, who was suspected of having been mixed up in both cases, pleaded not guilty, and was allowed his liberty.

THREE-YEAR TERM William Plooard, [pictured] the young man who pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing a hand bag from the rear vestibule of a Locka street car, received a sentence of three years. He has been convicted before, and when passing judgment on him this morning his worship said: "There is no other course open for me other than to send you to the penitentiary for the next three years."

REMANDED FOR SENTENCE William B. Case, 203 Lottridge street, appeared to answer a charge of stoaling $90 from William H. Jones, and pleaded guilty, electing to be tried by the magistrate. He was reminded until to-morrow for sentence.

MUST CLEAN UP. Mrs. R. Durfey, 48 Bay street north, the woman with whom Mrs. Riley who was murdered by her husband last January, resided, appeared be- fore Magistrate Jeifs this morning, on complaint of the board of health department. Dr. Shain said he advised the woman several times to clean up her yard, as it was in a filthy condition, and she refused to do so. She had to pay a fine of $5 and was told that if she didn't comply with the order of the department she would be brought before him again and receive a larger fine.

WAS ACQUITTED. May Clark, 16 Francis street, was acquitted of the charge of wilfully destroying a photograph, the property of Rov Bossil.

WILL MAKE INQUIRIES John Jacobs, of no address, was агrested last night by Constable Pasel, on a charge of vagrancy, and was remanded for a few days until inquiries are instituted into his past.

CHARGE INSANITY. William Thornton, of no address, but who later said that Woodstock was his home town, answered to a charge of insanity registered against him by Constable Pasel and was remanded for a few days to be examined by a commission.

GAVE HER ADVICE. Mrs. Marie McCarthy, 219 Wellington street north, pleaded guilty to a charge of child desertion, but as there was no rider attached to it saying the child was in danger of serious injury. She was allowed her freedom, after a heart to heart talk with his worship.

[Plooard was from Chicago, a common labourer, 20, and had a long criminal record, with two previous terms in the Central Prison and four previous stays in the Toronto Jail. He had a number of tattoos, including a cross on his right shoulder, the letters C.W. and A. N. on his right arm bicep, clasped hands on his right forearm and the letters S. D. near his right wrist. He was convict #F-568 at Kingston Penitentiary and mostly worked in the excavation and trucking work crew. He was reported once, in December 1913, for talking, and lost five days remission. He was released in late 1915.]
