From Nuclear Industry magazine (published by the Atomic Industrial Forum), November 1967.
Say it louder for those in the back.
Public understanding is a significant and understated problem area.
And we’re not talking about the general public here, the man in the street, who can be forgive a certain naivete. This is from people with scientific backgrounds.
Life-saving shipments of nuclear medicines, radioisotopes vitally needed for diagnosis and treatment, are routinely prevented from moving by bigots. It’s well known that shipments of fresh and spent nuclear fuel are often affected by protestors, but the virtual blockading of radioisotopes produced for medical, scientific, and industrial use mostly passes unremarked. Once again we see that the antinuclear crowd prefers to cause real harm to real people, rather than give up their notions of what is and is not proper.

listen i understand that this article was written to promote a dumb horror movie set in the exclusion zone & therefore has a vested interest in making the area seem scary & mysterious, but um. you're talking about real people. most of whom are just elderly women who live in poverty & have lived on the land all their lives. nothing's "wrong" with them. they're old ladies who did not want to or could not leave their ancestral land, who now face regular harassment by shitass tourists & obnoxious soldiers. anyway you should watch babushkas of chernobyl for free on youtube instead.

Right. Chernobyl special interest haver here. Do not panic. The fire has been put out, radiation levels are not increasing. There is significant damage to the New Safe Confinement Unit, but the Sarcophagus, the original means of containment, is still intact and undamaged. Although the Sarcophagus isn't perfect (it was found to have structural flaws and some leaks, hence the reason for the NSC Unit's construction), it still prevents the worst of any radiation from escaping. If the Sarcophagus were to be significantly damaged or destroyed, yes, that would be very bad, but it's not like not like anything would explode or have catastrophic effects like the original disaster. The worst of the 1986 disaster was the radioactive particles which were thrown into the air by the initial explosion and smoke from the resulting fire. These were carried by the wind across Europe. Exposing the reactor to the open air would be... bad, but it would not be anything like the initial disaster. Although radiation levels would definitely increase in the immediate area, there is already an exclusion zone already which has been established for years that would prevent the majority of any threat to people. Now, some level of radiation might be wind-carried, but between the decrease in the overall radiation levels over the past few decades, cleaning efforts, and distance, there is unlikely to be any serious danger to people. It is possible that some level of contamination could occur, but these could be mitigated by monitoring radiation and just having people stay inside.
There will be no "too late" situation, no radiation apocalypse that ends habitation in Eastern Europe. There will be no catastrophic disaster which causes horrible mutations and sickness (which is honestly not how it works even in a bad situation, it is very complicated). Absolute worst case scenario is evacuations of downwind areas, and people being told to only consume canned/preserved food that were already produced and water confirmed to be uncontaminated (fresh produce can absorb radioactive particles via getting into soil/plants and working its way up the food chain). We understand how to handle radiation far more than we did before, and any situation could be carefully monitored and approached. A key factor of dealing with anything involving radiation is ensuring that any needed action is taken quickly, rather than waiting for it to spread. But even if they could not get to the area to make repairs, it would be nothing like the initial disaster. Again, even that is an absolutely worst case scenario that is very unlikely.
Russia's fucking attacking Chernobyl again for some reason. Thankfully the sarcophagus is doing it's job very well, but assuming that was a deliberate attack... Y'know, I don't really know in detail.
I can't find any details on what will happen if the sarcophagus were destroyed. The only thing I can kind of say with some confidence is that there will be another disaster that rivals the one that happened in the 80's. Except this time there's a war going on and if Russia is doing this deliberately they probably won't let anybody fix it until it's too late. (If at all.)
If anything, Putin would probably be like "I'll let you fix it if you give Ukraine to me." Not understanding that it'd probably already be too late for him, too.

playing the radiophobia mod for s.t.a.l.k.e.r. SoC rn and i’ve becoming overly attached to a faceless companion npc named Vlad Mohawk. he’s stayed alive with me ever since rookie village, through the garbage and agroprom tunnels, he’s killed 3 bloodsuckers, but we keep getting viciously gunned down at the military base

I miss your S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ocs sometimes.. (though of course I most enjoy seeing you pursue your art however you choose) have you played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 yet, or the Radiophobia mod for SoC?
Thanks so much! Unfortunately I've been picking up other hobbies so art has been slow.
Don't think I can play stalker 2 yet, I think my laptop can't handle it. But the radiophobia mod sounds interesting!

What’s radiation fear called and where is it designated?
Like
Radiophobia-
That is me- I hate radiation- I watched the Chernobyl show when I was 9 and have been interested but terrified of it since then.
So is it like corruption? Or is it extinction- cause I feel like radiation alone is not extinction- but when you weaponize it- it becomes extinction- like corruption- probably somewhere in desolation- mmm- idk- interesting thought- anyways- hate hate nuclear war, fallout, radiation, the elephants foot- all of it sucks ass

nobody asked me about chernobyl, nobody was even talking about chernobyl, i just think about it all the time. anyway this is a good video that talks about the medical inaccuracies in the HBO miniseries. i think it's so wild how they perpetuated the lie that lyudmilla ignatenko's baby was killed by being exposed to her firefighter husband when we KNOW that radiation is not contagious, he was NEVER contagious to lyudmilla or her fetus, she is a REAL PERSON & her baby did die shortly after birth but if it was exposed to any radiation, it would've been from lyudmilla being in pripyat at the time of the explosion, NOT from her spending time with her dying husband. lyudmilla is still alive & had to relocate after the miniseries came out due to being hounded by reporters accusing her of killing her baby. she has been suffering with this for nearly 40 years. radiophobia is a real thing & it led to many of the chernobyl evacuees being feared & shunned by the towns where they relocated. it comes from lack of education about radiation, which is understandable in rural USSR in 1986 when the government was concealing much of the information, but there is no excuse now. there is no excuse for HBO to have lied like that. it simply doesn't work that way, the contaminants are on the outside, the firefighters were stripped & bathed as soon as they arrived at the hospital so they were never a risk to anyone.
also this doctor has my last name so i like her. we could even be related since my family came from belarus. OOOH SHE HAS A BOOK ok sorry i'm in special interest mode
