I'm sorry to bother you but all the elections stuff is really confusing me and i don't know what's happening
I'm not at the age of voting but will be by the time of the next elections
Again sorry to be a bother
Not a bother at all! And good on you for wanting to learn about this stuff already! The more informed you are by the time you are of voting age, the more informed of a decision you can make 🙂
Full disclosure, I'm not a social scientist or anything, just an average Indian citizen/voter with some academic expertise (not in this field). If someone reading all this finds something wrong, please feel free to point it out, preferably politely.
TL;DR : Indian parliamentary system is built to thrive on diverse viewpoints representative of its people. An attempt to smooth out dissensions and differences without healthy discussion goes against a democratic system. What we are happy about this week is election of a healthy opposition and a coalition that has the potential of keeping power concentration into one hands in check.
This is a bit of an expansive topic but I'm gonna break down certain key terms that you're gonna hear a lot in the news or other election commentary in the next few days. I'm not sure how much of a background knowledge you already have, so this is super long and detailed. Sorry about that in advance! Take your time reading this, or use it as a reference. Up to you! Follow up questions are more than welcome.
The Indian Parliament: The Indian Parliament is split into two houses, the Lower House or the Lok Sabha/House of the People, and the Upper House or the Rajya Sabha/Council of States. Lok Sabha members are appointed through elections while Rajya Sabha members are selected by the State Legislative Assemblies (Vidhan Sabha) and the President. When a new law is proposed as a bill or an ammendment to the constitution is proposed, it must pass through BOTH the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The Lok Sabha: Lok Sabha has a total of 543 seats, representing 543 electoral constituencies throughout the country. Note that these 543 constituencies aren't exactly based on existing district divisions (eg: The Ayodhya district in UP is in the Faizabad constituency). Constituencies are split by population density. This means a region with more people will have more seats/stronger voice in the Lok Sabha. As a result, the largest state by area, Rajasthan has 25 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the most densely populated state of Uttar Pradesh has 80 seats in the Lok Sabha despite being the 4th largest state in the country. Also means if a political party bags UP, it gives them a huge leg up in winning Lok Sabha elections. To form a government, a political party or a group of political parties (a coalition) needs to have majority in the Lok Sabha. This mean winning over 272 seats or in other words, winning majority votes in 272 or more constituencies. Lok Sabha elections happen every 5 years, and the one that just happened, was a Lok Sabha election.
Important parties and alliances to keep in mind while parsing the news and comments are :
Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP): The ruling party that formed the government in the past two Lok Sabha terms (10 years). Note that in the 2014 and 2019 elections, BJP won a majority without forming an alliance with any other party. BJP's core politics are right-wing, which typically translates to capitalism, socially conservative, and maintaining class hierarchy as a form of order and structure in society.
Indian National Congress (INC or Congress): The main opposition party against the BJP. Indian National Congress's politics are liberal/center. While their polities don't entirely dismantle class/caste divide, they don't entirely aim to privatize sectors or take capitalism as the end all be all.
National Democratic Alliance (NDA): BJP-led coalition that secured majority in Lok Sabha elections and will form the government for the upcoming election term.
Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA): Congress led coalition which didn't get the majority, but did secure 232 out of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. Even though those that are part of the INDIA coalition won't be forming the government, they will be present in the Lok Sabha as the elected representative of their respective constituency to voice their opinion on any motion that passes through the Lok Sabha.
Janta Dal (United) or JD(U): A political party from Bihar led by Nitish Kumar. JD(U) is currently part of the NDA, however JD(U) joined NDA pretty much right before the elections. As a matter of fact, Nitish Kumar has a tendency to switch sides depending on what he thinks would ensure his power and position. In 2014, when it became apparent that BJP was aiming for a Modi-led government and that Nitish, as someone who is not formally in BJP, didn't stand a chance of even being a cabinet minister, much less the Prime Minister, Nitish left NDA. However, back then, BJP managed to get a clear majority and Nitish's pullback didn't have weight. However, with JD(U) winning 12 seats in this election and BJP having to rely on a coalition government, Nitish's pullback has weight. At the time of writing this, word on the street is Nitish is sticking with the NDA and has made demands for 2 cabinets being handed over to JD(U) (See below cut for info on what is a cabinet).
Telugu Desam Party or TDP: Led by Chandrababu Naidu, TDP is a party with a stronghold in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Currently also in the NDA coalition, TDP managed to win 16 seats in Andhra Pradesh. While Chandrababu Naidu isn't as much of a flip-flopper as Nitish, he has been fairly outspoken against the Modi government in the past. That being said, word on the street is also that Naidu garu may have been offered the position of the Lok Sabha Speaker (as in the person who mediates Lok Sabha discussions) and to also assign 2 cabinet berths to TDP in exchange for their continued support of NDA.
Other notable parties and names:
- DMK : Won 22 seats in Tamil Nadu. Is in the INDIA coalition/opposition. Led by M. K. Stalin.
- AITC or TMC: Won 29 seats in West Bengal. Is in the INDIA coalition/opposition. Led by Mamata Banerjee.
- SP : Won 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Is in the INDIA coalition/opposition. Led by Akhilesh Yadav.
All in all, the Indian parliamentary system allows for diverse voices and points of view to be a part of the discussion regarding national policies and lawmaking, even if the said voice doesn't make the ruling government. Something also to keep in mind about Indian politicians specifically is that they rarely think about public welfare and rather prioritize their personal hold on power. None of them are above the other when it comes to scheming on how to maintain power and these schemes often involve tactics to deflect their accountability towards the people.
In its decade long term, BJP as a ruling party has invested on multiple levels to maintain a one-man stronghold. I want to keep this answer objective and won't comment on any specific ruling. However, know that a one-man stronghold and a weak opposition defeats the purpose of the parliament and the constituencies. What most people are celebrating today is having a healthy opposition in place in addition to a coalition which would be a sort of check against power being concentrated into one person's hand.
When you vote in the next election, keep in mind that Indian politicians aren't like bands or artists you should root for. What you will be electing them to are positions of public service. Their priority is power and YOUR vote helps them have that. You are not answerable for their loss, THEY are answerable to YOU.
Also whoever you elect to the Lok Sabha is among the candidates in your constituency. A random schmuck from South Delhi who voted for BJP didn't vote for Modi, they voted for Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the BJP candidate running from South Delhi. You could make the argument 'they voted for Modi Sarkar!' but the real, flesh and blood person that vote put in the parliament was not Narendra Modi, it was Ramvir Singh Bidhuri. Only people in Varanasi could vote directly for Modi because he contested from there. Had Modi lost the Varanasi seat, he wouldn't have been a member of the Lok Sabha. In which case, even if BJP or NDA made the government, Modi would have to become a part of the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha in the next six months to be chosen as the Prime Minister. Long story short, learn more about the constituency you are in, the candidates and parties in that constituency, the demographic of your community, the problems it faces, and in light of all of that, who is the best candidate to represent your community's voice in the Lok Sabha.
Adding an additional note cabinets, but I think that's a little tangential so it's under the cut. Again, follow up questions more than welcome. Hope this helps you make some sense of the mess that is Indian electoral politics!
Cabinets and Socialism: A Cabinet Minister assumes leadership of one of the 53 ministries within the government. Most countries around the world, regardless of their government system, have a similar structure. Though, I do want to point out that India is a Socialist Republic. What this means, is that there are entire sectors that are folded into a centralized, government funded cabinet as opposed to a third party, like a private company, being responsible for it. Indian Railways are a great example for this. From literally manufacturing trains to operating railway stations to laying down rail lines to issuing tickets, the Ministry of Railway is responsible for all of it. While Indian Railways do have subdivisions to handle different aspects, the Minister of Railways is in-charge of the management of ALL of those subdivisions. There are also sectors like Aviation or Telecom where while the government doesn't own ALL airlines or telecom companies, the government does have it's own public funded unit (Air India in case of aviation and BSNL and MTNL in case of Telecom) and there are cabinet ministers who oversee the management of these units in addition to laying out guidelines and regulations which the entire sector has to follow.
Socialist structures with their govt centralized system help regulate cost and keep cost inflation in check because the purpose of a cabinet that runs on government money is public service, not profit margin (eg: general compartment train tickets are affordable and have been affordable for a long time). In the meantime, privatization of sectors may increase efficiency of a service (eg: Ministry of External Affairs outsourcing passport services to TCS has been a huge success), it may also drive cost inflation, unless checked on by the ministry responsible for the third party contract. We will find out who in the NDA will lead which cabinet on June 8.

so the bill expired twice under the nda government, also, not so coincidentally, a time when the congress used women's empowerment as their political agenda for the 2k19 general elections. it was passed by the rajya sabha in 2k10. it's been 13 years since the lok sabha even thought about it. it was pending for so long it is in our tenth grade political science textbooks. my parents studied this in school. i am not going to celebrate this. it’s the government's job.

Kejriwal Expresses Gratitude to Rahul and Kharge for Backing AAP on Delhi Services Bill
The Delhi Services Bill took center stage as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended his heartfelt appreciation to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi. Their resolute support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was acknowledged by Kejriwal with gratitude.
In individual letters addressed to Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal conveyed his thanks on behalf of Delhi's populace, numbering two crore. He lauded their party's stance in opposing and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Kejriwal's letters carried his profound respect for the Congress leaders' commitment to safeguarding the rights of Delhi's citizens both within the Parliament's chambers and beyond.
Kejriwal stated, "I would like to place on record the heartfelt appreciation for championing the rights of the people of Delhi inside as well as outside the Parliament. I am certain that your unflinching loyalty towards the principles of our Constitution will be remembered for decades."
The Delhi Chief Minister's remarks also hinted at his collaboration with the 'I.N.D.I.A' bloc, a coalition of 26 Opposition parties. He expressed eagerness for their continued support in the ongoing battle against elements that undermine the Constitution. Kejriwal's letters were in harmony with similar gestures extended to Nitish Kumar, Uddhav Thackeray, Mamta Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, MK Stalin, Hemant Soren, and KCR.
Notably, the Delhi Services Bill triumphed in the Rajya Sabha, garnering a significant victory for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Securing 131 votes in favor, the bill surpassed the opposition coalition 'I.N.D.I.A,' which managed 102 votes against it. Following this outcome, Arvind Kejriwal passionately critiqued the Central government for their approach and interference in Delhi's governance.
Kejriwal's affinity for his role as 'Delhi ka beta' resonated as he highlighted the consistent support from the people, reinforcing his commitment to governance aligned with their aspirations. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the impact of collaborative efforts and the voice of the people remain integral to the fabric of India's democracy.

For an issue that affects 75 million people in our country, our conversations and perception around mental health are almost non-existent. From being shrugged off as a ‘phase’ that someone is going through to being blamed for ‘not having the will and courage to face life’ – the stigma and lack of understanding around mental health prevents many from getting the right help and a support system. The Mental Health Bill, passed in the Rajya Sabha is also not as ‘historic’ and ‘progressive’ as one might think.
More than 60 million Indians suffer from mental disorders; 10-20 million have severe mental disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder while nearly 50 million have been facing depression and anxiety.
In 1990, suicide was not among the top 10 killers in India. Today, sadly, it is. In 5 years (2015-2020), over 7 lakh people committed suicide. India has three psychiatrists per 1,000,000 people. 0.06% of India’s health budget is for mental healthcare.
Task in Hand
You, as an entrepreneur, must grasp the opportunity to solve the issue. Come up with a business (product or service) that caters to solve the problem faced by people suffering from such mental disorders.
Deliverables
You are to make a PPT of not more than 7 slides, including but not limited to the following:
Executive Summary
Operational and Phase Wise Implementation Plan
Marketing Campaign
Financials (Fund Allocation and Revenue Generation Estimates)
Extra Deliverables

These 31 MPs Are Its Members
The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Friday adopted a motion naming the members. (File) New Delhi: The joint committee of Parliament to examine the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will have 31 members — 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha — and will submit its report by the next session. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Friday adopted a motion moved by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who also holds the parliamentary affairs portfolio, naming the members to be part of the committee. In the Lower House, 12 members of the panel are from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including eight from the BJP, and nine from the opposition. In the Upper House, four are from the BJP, four from the opposition and one is a nominated member. The Lok Sabha members in the panel are Jagdambika Pal, Nishikant Dubey, Tejasvi Surya, Aparajita Sarangi, Sanjay Jaiswal, Dilip Saikia, Abhiit Gangopadhyay, DK Aruna (all BJP); Gaurav Gogoi, Imran Masood and Mohammadd Jawed (all Congress); Mohibullah (Samajwadi Party); Kalyan Banerjee (Trinamool Congress); A Raja (DMK); Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (Telugu Desam Party); Dileshwar Kamait (JDU); Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena-UBT); Suresh Mhatre (NCP-Sharad Pawar); Naresh Mhaske (Shiv Sena); Arun Bharti (Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas); and Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM). Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is expected to name the committee’s chairperson soon. There is a view that BJP’s Mr Pal may head the panel but officials said a final call would be taken by Mr Birla. The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday and referred to a joint committee of Parliament after a heated debate, with the government asserting the proposed law did not intend to interfere with the functioning of mosques and the opposition calling it targeting of Muslims and an attack on the Constitution. The committee will submit its report to the Lok Sabha by the last day of the first week of the next session, Mr Rijiju said. A delegation of Muslim clerics also met Mr Rijiju to extend its support to the amendments to the Wakf Act, 1995, proposed by the government amid the opposition’s strong criticism. A Sense of Relief Regarding Taxes
In an attempt to provide some respite to the investors and ensure a taxpayer-friendly approach in revenue collection, the Finance Minister of India has recently assured that theIncome-Tax Authorities (“ITA”) will not recklessly implement the retrospective tax rules. The Government of India (“GoI”) has introduced retrospective amendments in the Income Tax Act, 1961 which empowers the ITA to tax the indirect transfer of shares when the underlying assets are located in India.
The GoI has now referred the issue of retrospective tax rules to the committee headed by Mr. Parthasarathi Shome, (the “Shome Committee”). Earlier, the Shome Committee had recommended that the General Anti Avoidance Rules (“GAAR”) be deferred for three years. GAAR, giving ITA powers to scrutinize any transaction that they feel was structured to evade taxes, was introduced in the Finance Act, 2012 to come into effect from April 1, 2013.
Finance Minister has further stated that the implementation of GAAR provisions and the retrospective tax rules would be subject to the final report of the Shome Committee, which is expected by the end of September, 2012. GAAR provisions and the retrospective tax rules have drawn sharp criticism from all spheres, since its introduction. The recent statements by the Finance Minister appear to be GoI’s effort to perk up the investors who have been apprehensive about the repercussions of implementation of the GAAR provisions and retrospective tax rules.
Law for Safer Workplace The Lok Sabha (Lower House) (“LS”) on September 3, 2012, finally gave its nod to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2010 (“Bill”), to deal with the menace of sexual harassment at work place. The Bill which was pending before the LS since 2010 underwent a radical facelift, owing to pressures from various women organizations and critical reviews by the parliamentary standing committee, before being approved.
The Bill, which still has to get the Rajya Sabha’s (Upper House) sanction, defines ‘sexual harassment’ to include “any unwelcome act or behavior directly or by implication of physical contact and advances, or a demand or request for sexual favors, or making sexually colored remarks or showing pornography or any other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of a sexual natures”.
The most noteworthy aspect of the Bill is that it brings under its ambit “domestic workers”, whether employed full-time, part-time or temporarily for household work in any house for remuneration whether in cash or kind, either directly or through any agency.
Some of the key features of the Bill are:
• Provides for safeguards against wrong or fallacious charges of sexual harassment; • Makes it mandatory for every employer to constitute an internal complaints committee at each office or branch with ten or more employees, to deal with cases and complaints of sexual harassment; • Enlists offences that will qualify as sexual harassment viz. making sexual remarks, demand for sexual favor, act of physical advance or an unwelcome touch, etc.; • Applicability of the Bill is wide enough to include not only employees but also clients, customers, apprentice, or daily wage workers who enter the workplace; and • Provides for penalties for employer for noncompliance. While women organizations and activists have welcomed the passing of the Bill, various other social interest groups have raised their concerns on certain aspects that have not been included or addressed in the Bill such as the Bill not protecting male workers against sexual harassment by co-workers.

Why it's time to reconsider population control!
India 2023 population is estimated at 1,428,627,663 people at mid year. India population is equivalent to 17.76% of the total world population. India ranks number 1 in the list of countries (and dependencies) by population.
In July 2019, a Population Regulation Bill, proposing to introduce a two-child policy per couple, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by BJP MP Rakesh Sinha. However, the Bill was withdrawn in 2023 following intervention by the Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya who argued that NHFS and census data to show the positive impact of government-led awareness campaigns rather than force on indicators such as the Total Fertility Rate (TFR).
Experts have many claims:
Fertility rate is decreasing
Urban women are having 1 or 2 children only.
Even the rural women are having two children
But here what point should be noticed is that
About 158.8 million of the population are children below the age of 6. Of these children, 30 million are orphans which makes up a significant portion of the youth population.
Most orphan children in India do not have access to necessities like food, shelter, and clean water, which also leads to a lack of education. With orphans out on the street doing everything they can to survive, schooling becomes a farfetched dream for so many. What you can expect from these children? They may become the threat for the humans and humanity and you cant find them guilty.
In this week I have read couple of reports where in Ahmedabad beggars’ racket have been disclosed. Children from Kota are here through agent and their parents have sold it to the agent for this purpose. Even 9 FIR have been lodged and police are compelled to find the angle of physical abuse and rape.
In another report I have read that beggar are subject for drug test for drug mafia. A mother who lives on the platform without housing, has a 4-month-old daughter, and was tested for drugs. We are such a compassionate and cultural people, but is kindness truly needed in this situation? What this 4-month-old girl will do and how she will make it through this world!
A population is still not under control where it ought to be, and this is a problem that shouldn't be disregarded. I've been informed that a mentally ill woman who was present on my city's railway platform became pregnant. The first idea was about getting even with that bloodthirsty man, and the second was for this undesired child's future! We are all aware of the state of the orphanages and government shelters. No youngster should reside here. This is not the place.  In the shelter house, reports of rape and physical violence are publicly discussed.
Population control is still a significant problem, and these kids need assistance with their education. Once more, I'm requesting all kind folks. Please don't look for a simple way to make a donation. Give it away to beggars at the signal. Every girl child who lives in a distant place or on the road should receive an education.

Today in Politics: All Eyes on Modi Govt 3.0’s First Budget Against a Changed Political Backdrop
The political landscape is buzzing with anticipation as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget for 2024–25. This marks the first budget under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, a term characterized by a notable shift in political dynamics.

The Political Shift
Unlike Modi’s previous terms, the BJP no longer holds a majority on its own and relies heavily on its NDA allies, particularly the TDP led by N Chandrababu Naidu and the JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar. This dependency adds an intriguing layer to this year’s budget, as both allies have outlined specific demands, including special category status (SCS) and special projects for their states, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.
Anticipated Debates and Strategies
The three-week-long Budget session, which kicked off on Monday, promises to be contentious. This was evident during the customary all-party meeting on Sunday, where coalition politics took center stage. Allies and opposition parties alike have presented various demands, urging the government to adopt a new approach in Parliament.
Key discussions will focus on ministries of railways, education, health, MSME, and food processing in the Lok Sabha, with a 20-hour debate on the budget expected. The Rajya Sabha will have an eight-hour discussion on the Appropriation and Finance Bills and four-hour debates on four yet-to-be-identified ministries.
Opposition’s Strategy
The INDIA bloc, comprising Congress and other opposition parties, held a strategy meeting to outline their approach for the session. They plan to raise significant issues, including the NEET-UG paper leak case, the Agniveer scheme, and violence in Manipur. Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, emphasized the importance of addressing issues connected with the people during their discussions.
Telangana Assembly’s Budget Session
Meanwhile, the Telangana Assembly’s Budget session begins on Tuesday, with key issues such as crop loan waivers, unemployment, and political defections expected to dominate discussions. The Congress government, led by A Revanth Reddy, is set to present its first full budget after assuming power last December.
Supreme Court Hearing on NEET
In a related development, the Supreme Court has ordered IIT Delhi to investigate a contentious question from the NEET-UG 2024 exam, following allegations of a paper leak. The court is set to continue hearing multiple petitions on Tuesday, focusing on the extent of the alleged malpractice and its impact on the examination’s integrity.
Stay tuned as we follow these critical political developments and their implications for the country’s future.
