Studio 6 - Field Trip!
This is my first field trip of 2018! Myself and EJ thought it would be a good idea to go to Auckland Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery to try get some inspiration and see how they “Pro’s” create there art pieces.
I had remembered an experience of myself going to the Auckland Museum about 8 years ago, and entering a room that was set out like a living room, and then you simulated what a volcano would look/feel like in Auckland.
I wasn’t sure if this was still there 8 years on, so looked it up and sure enough, it still was, so we decided to go to experience it again.
So, on Monday we went, and started out by looking at other displays that were not necessarily based on what we were doing, natural disasters and the Anthropocene. We wanted to see how these exhibitions worked, how they attracted the viewers attention and interacted with them. We noticed that most of them were very simple, didn’t take much to do but were very powerful and got you thinking.
One exhibition asked viewers what they would vote for if they could change one thing. Each viewer got a ribbon, the colour matched there gender, and you tied it around a circle fence piece which simulated 1 of 4 answers: Affordable Housing, Clean Waterways, Gender Pay Equality, and finally Climate Change. It was interested to see which circles had the most ribbons, but then also which genders picked which one. Climate control and Gender pay Equality were clear winners over the 4, but it was interesting to see that females wanted gender pay equality whereas males wanted to change climate control.
Tumblr media
This then let the viewers mind think about it for themselves, I said to EJ that it was interesting, and to me it shows that females are very self-centered, only thinking about themselves, whereas males were thinking about the planet and everyone. But EJ took something completely different away from it, and it showed us how we could try make our piece be unique to everyone who sees it.
Other exhibitions seemed simple and 2D, but when you looked at it from a different angle, you could see it become 3D. This made me think about how we could use this technique to show something.
Tumblr media
Moving upstairs and to the area that we were most interested in, were the sections about fossils, and the land and natural disasters. Here we learnt about the different elements of the earth, also learning about how fossils are made and where you find them, which is beneficial to us if we decide to show the layers of the earth, to put into context the Anthropocene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the main attraction, why we came to the museum in the first place, the room that moves! Here, you stood inside a room that was set out like a living room, and there is a screen mimicking a window of the Auckland harbour with Rangitoto in the background. The TV turns on with a news channel on, saying that Rangitito had sprung into life and showing signs of an eruption. While this is happening, you can see smoke coming out of the ocean, and eventually the volcano erupts. You can see what it looks like, with a wall of ash quickly moving towards the “house”. However, what makes this exhibition different, is the floor shunts when the volcano erupts, and the lights go out when the ash hits, simulating what it would really feel like. I don’t think we could do anything on this scale, but shows us how creative we could try become.
Tumblr media
Afterwards we went to Auckland Art Gallery, just for some more inspiration.
We came across this piece that showcased different items that were excavated in Ponsonby in 1986. Items such as clothes pegs, spoons and other materials were uncovered, which resonated with us, as our project is about human waste being left behind in our earth for future generations to uncover, much like these items were.
Tumblr media
Overall I think we got some valuable information and insights that we can use in our project, and definitely worth our time exploring different exhibitions to give us inspiration. We also came up with our name for the project, Disastercene, a mix of natural disasters and Anthropocene.

Day #1: Ten Things That Make You Happy
1. Walking along the beach. I’m luckily enough to live in a city where the beach is a five minute drive away. I love walking along the interconnected beach trails and taking photos of Rangitoto.
2. Disney World. It truly is the happiest place on earth. I’ve visited Disneyland, Disney World and Euro Disney six times in the past two years.
3. Playing The Sims. I think i’ll be playing Sims 2 until I die. Mods and CC keep the game fun for me, I especially love legacy challenges.
4. Coffee dates with my mom. Sometimes the simplest things with family bring the most joy.
5. Spencer Reid. I can’t help it. He’s beautiful in every way and it’s one of my life’s greatest tragedies that he doesn’t really exist.
6. Writing fanfiction. I guess this goes with #5. I do love writing Criminal Minds fanfic. I write for a lot of fandoms, but CM’s my main.
7. Cooking. I love trying out healthy, fun recipes. I used to eat a bland European carb-based diet, but I’ve found some new quick and easy go-to’s. I’ve also cut down on meat and animal products, so it’s fun to see what I can use as substitutes.
8. Learning Italian. I’ve been learning for two years on and off, but a few months ago I starting working at it every day. I use a combination of Duolingo, a few Youtube channels, textbooks and kids TV shows.
9.Travelling. It’s expensive to travel from NZ, but when I lived in Europe I managed to visit UK, France, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, The Netherlands, Luxemborg, Slovenia, Lichtenstein, Czechia, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Monaco. I’ve also been to the US a few times, and I’m planning a trip to Peru, Chile and Bolivia for next year.
10. Fridays. I love that Friday feeling. That you’ve put in a solid week of work, and now you get to relax and enjoy the weekend. Saturday’s great too, but I hate that “tomorrow’s Sunday which means Monday’s on it’s way” feeling that I get.

Auckland is  New Zealand’s largest and newly established ‘Super City’ known by the local Maori, as Tamaki Makau Rau, (‘The Maiden Sought by a hundred lovers’). Another popular name for Auckland is ‘The City of Sails’, where the harbor comes alive with a flotilla of sailing, powerboats, cruise ships, ferries, pleasure craft, tourist boats, kayaks and charter boats. These come out in abundance with Auckland’s Anniversary Regatta. The  Regatta is the oldest sporting event in New Zealand dating back to 1840. Visitors to the Viaduct Harbour on this long weekend can enjoy heritage vessels, Dragon boats, flying multihulls, radio controlled yachts, canoes, and some of the fastest boats on the water. View the amazing maneuverability displayed by as many as 21 tug-boats racing up the Rangitoto channel, is a sight to behold. The Viaduct Basin is the vibrant hub of downtown Auckland

Channeling these spectacular memories from last year's @totalsportnz 'The Dual', for a very special day out tomorrow. There aren't many places in the world where a run traverses beach, farmland, volcano, lava fields, native bush, and a sprinkling of hills all the way while traversing two islands. Tomorrow's plan: Wake up Kiss the one I love Pack a bag Chat with dear friends Catch a ferry Step onto the precious island Smile so hard my cheeks nearly burst, chase my heart up mountains, drink in the views, wave hello and high five and smile (more), run for those who can't, let all the small details fall away remembering that life is not logistics but in experiences like these that make your very being soar Party Happy birthday, The Dual! Turning 10 tomorrow and a part of our lives every year since 2012, and with good reason 😍 #life #love #run #thedual #timetoplay #motutapu #rangitoto #trail #marathon #volcano #mountains #islands #party
