Fun fact! The form Beast Boy takes to mimic Knuckles is a reference to Rankles the Otter, an infamous hoax character made from a poorly modified illustration of Knuckles in the earliest days of the Sonic fandom as an April Fools joke. This is made more explicit by Beast Boy mistaking Knuckles for an otter.

The following panel where Tails says that Knuckles looks terrible in green instead is a dig of the infamous Chaos Knuckles from the Archie comics… something made by you-know-who that had been ignored by any other author that followed him alongside hundreds of other terrible ideas.

I know this is probably nothing more than small funny gag in the recent “DC X Sonic” issue but I like to think that beast boy transforming into knuckles but green is a reference/homage to either the time he turns green via using the master emerald’s power in the pre reboot Archie Sonic comics or the April fools joke character, Rankles The Green Otter 🦦

So this was a big hoax character back in the day in the UK and I would honestly love if SEGA made it real. Like give him a better name and design but yeah. One, Knuckles needs more pals, maybe he can live on Angel Island so Knuckles doesn't get lonely up there since SEGA says he can't leave. Two, we could use more aquatic characters. Imagine the level possibilities he'd open up.
