Programmieren und Entwickeln auf einem Chromebook? Klar! Perfekt? Naja...

Vor vielen Jahren, ja als Chromebooks das Licht der Welt endeckten, habe ich mich für ein Chromebook entschieden. Am Beginn der Entwicklung war es nur sehr eingeschränkt möglich mit einem Chromebook auch zu entwickeln und wenn dann nur im Web-Umfeld. Damals ging es nicht ohne einen weiteren Computer zu besitzen. Im Laufe der Zeit änderte sich dies, der Windows PC fand seinen Weg auf den Schrott und so hatte ich dann vor einigen Jahren schon eine Windows freie Zone. Noch im Haushalt Raspberry Pi Computer. Und ja eines der Kinder hat ein MacBook und auch sonst alles andere was es so von Apple gibt. Windows war irgendwann nicht wirklich noch ein Thema für mich.

Zugegeben ab und zu denke ich noch darüber nach. Nur um eifach das ein oder andere auszuprobieren und weniger als tägliches Arbeitsinstrument. Auch wenn Chromebooks viel Spaß machen, so war es auch ein bisschen eine Leidensgeschichte. An keinem anderen Betriebssystem wurde in den letzten Jahren soviel herumgeschraubt wie an chromeOS. Das zeigt der Stand der Dinge: Dein Chromebook ist auf dem neuesten Stand. Version 103.0.5060.37 (Offizieller Build) beta (64-Bit). Ja ich betreibe mein Chromebook in der Beta und darüber bin ich auch insgesamt sehr froh. Doch gehen wir einmal weg von Themen wie Webentwicklung, PWA und Co. und schauen auf andere Dinge, wie Entwicklung von künstlicher Intelligenz in Form von Objekterkennung. Oder schauen wir auf die vielen tollen Dinge die uns Python bietet.

Dazu bedarf es auf einem Chromebook der Aktivierung der Entwicklerumgebung. Und damit aktiviert man eigentlich nur einen Container, eine virtuelle Umgebung und deren Basis ist Linux. Heute sind wir ganz aktuell bei Debian Bullseye angekommen und damit sind zwar nicht alle Grenzen aufgehoben. Doch es geht einiges, es geht vieles! Aber auch da knierschte es immer wieder. Die Entwickler von chromeOS versuchen eben den Pfad zu beschreiten Linuxanwendungen zur Verfügung zu stellen und dennoch dafür zu sorgen das Chromebooks diese extrem sicheren Geräte bleiben.

Und da gibt es auch heute noch gewisse Defizite. Das fängt bei so einfachen Dingen wie dem Backup an. Während chromeOS automatisch so alles sichert in der Cloud, wie auch Android Apps, ist ein automatisches Backup beim Linux Container immernoch nicht Realität geworden. Und die Sicherung dieser "Zusatzumgebung" ist regelmäßig von ganz erheblicher Bedeutung. Jedenfalls ist die Entwicklung mit zahlreichen Entwickler Anwendungen machbar. Da wäre die Thonny IDE, ganz wichtig! Visual Code Studio, Ardunino IDE oder GitHubs Atom IDE.

Im Zusammenhang mit Bullseye und Python reden wir natürlich dann unumgänglich von Python3. Programme zu bauen wie meine kleine Wetterstation sind damit kein Problem. Wetterdaten per API Key aus dem Internet holen. Daten aufbreiten und mit Hilfe von Tkinter darstellen. Oder den raspberry Pi Pico Microcontroller oder einen Badger2040 programmieren. Oder ich liebe immernoch sehr mein LED-Binäruhr Projekt mit dem Pico und einem Echtzeit RTC Modul.

Es gibt halt gewisse Grenzen. Immernoch. Nicht alles lässt sich eventuell realisieren, gerade weil ggf. ein Stück Software nötig ist, welche eben auf chromeOS oder Linux nicht läuft. Weil die Anbieter einiger Software diese nur für Windows oder Mac anbieten. Einiges davon im Umfeld von Video- oder Fotobearbeitung, im Gaming Bereich oder oft bei Astronomie-Software. Ob das grund genug ist von einem Chromebook abzugehen?

Naja, da muss man genau hinsehen ob sich dann die deutlich höheren Anschaffungskosten wirklich lohnen. Ich gahe auch schon lange mit einem MacBook als Zweitgerät schwanger. Wohlgemerkt, als Zweitgerät! Und ja es gibt da auch einen Gamer in der Familie und sicher wird dann auch bald ein Gaming-PC fällig. Oh je. Wenn das zeug doch nur nicht so viel geld kosten würde!

Die Frage danach ob und wie gut man auf einem Chromebook entwickeln, programmieren kann ist damit aber beantwortet. Die Anwort lautet ganz klar: JA! Aber das ist nur der Tatsache gschuldet Linux im Container nutzen zu können. Ohne diese Funktionalität wären Chromebooks sonst dafür ungeeignet. Und der Container bringt zwar Sicherheit aber auch Einschränkungen! Es ist nicht das erste mal das ich meine ganz persönlichen Gedanken zu diesem Thema zusammenfasse. So richtig rund ist es eben noch nicht.

Es gibt nun auch einen Punkt mehr zu beachten. Bislang war Chromebook gleich Chromebook. Das hat sich geändert. Jetzt gibt es Chromebooks mit verschiedenen Prozessoren. In ein paar Chromebooks schlägt ein Herz von Intel, bei anderen ein AMD oder was auch immer. Und es bedeutet viel, denn je nach dem was man da so anstellen will kann der Prozessor nun entscheidend darüber sein ob und was geht. Aber mehr noch.

Bei Chromebooks war bisher immer die Devise, wenn es mal schrott geht, neues kaufen, anmelden und alles wieder so da wie vorher. Das geht auch prinzipiell heute noch so. Jedoch ist das neue Chromebook mit einem anderen Prozessor ausgestattet oder ist ein anderes Bauteil maßgeblich ein anderes kann es das schon gewesen sein. Wir nähern uns also anderen Betriebssystemen mit deren üblichen Problemen an. Gerade in größeren Firmen sind solche Hardwareunterschiede ein echtes Problem. Gut, maßgeblich wegen Windows. Andere Baureihe, andere Grafikkarte und dabei muss das Modell bzw. die Modellserie garnicht anders sein.

Solche Dinge bereiten Administratoren immer wieder Probleme. Bei einem Chromebook muss aber nun kein Update oder Image ausgerollt werden und das macht es sicher einfacher. An die Stelle von Active Directory tritt der Workspace Admin und Chromebooks bieten schon deutliche mehr Sicherheit und sind auch einfacher in der handhabung wenn es darum geht das Mitarbeiter das Unternehmen verlassen und gehandelt werden muss.

Aber bleiben wir beim Thema "Developer". Gehen wir einmal nicht von jemanden aus, der Chromebooks seit dem Tag Eins kennt. Ein geringes Budget hat und sich deshalb ggf. für ein Chromebooks entschieden hat. Stellen wir uns die Frage ob ein Entwickler, der bisher auf einem MacBook gearbeitet hat auf ein Chromebook umsteigen würde. Die Frage können wir sicher ganz klar mit Nein beantworten. Sie verstehen warum wir uns an dieser Stelle irgendwie im Kreis drehen?

Könnten wir es nur am Preis festmachen, dann wäre es bis vor ca. 2-3 Jahren noch einfach gewesen. Chromebook! Aber wer heute ein Top-Modell haben möchte muss nun auch für ein Chromebook fast die gleiche Summe investieren wie für ein MacBook. Chromebooks sind toll, ist aber der Preis nicht mehr ausschlaggebend für die Kaufentscheidung, ist die Sicherheit mit Einschränkungen hinzunehmen und brauche ich Power unter der Haube um auch mal viele Daten zu verarbeiten und lange und komplexe Skripte auszuführen. Ja, nun dann wird 's eng für ein Chromebook.

Ganz offen und ohne voruteile? Immer auch unter dem Aspekt man kennt die verschiedenen Systeme auch wirklich und qatscht nix nach was man so hört. Wie würdet Ihr euch entscheiden?
