I'm well aware this is NOT the way re zero is going to go, but I always had the crack headcanon that the reason Reinhard's pov is a secret is because Od Laguna's DPs actually made him SO self aware he even knows he is a character from a Japanese light novel

More about about some of the characters

Let’s start with our protagonist, Subaru!

Subaru is very similar to his beloved canon counterpart. The main difference is that his guilty pleasure is playing otome games. His favourite one is Thaumaturgy Through a Frozen Heart (aka the otome version of the re: zero world), where the heroine is Emilia! Even though she’s the protagonist, Subaru latches onto her as his favourite and comfort character.

Emilia has the same personality as canon, only difference is how her story goes. She’s still feared and disliked because she’s a half-elf, however, she’s actually related to Satella rather than it being just stigma against elves. A lot of her bad endings end in death which Subaru wants to avoid once he gets transported into the game.

There are two capture targets that I’m sure of: Julius and Reinhard. Subaru adores Emilia and wants to give her the best possible ending, and he doesn’t think he can do that. So, instead, he settles on being a matchmaker and chooses Reinhard (not Julius because Subaru still beefing with him even in an entirely different universe lol).

Reinhard is the top of the students, best in practically all the subjects except for magic. He’s still that good natured guy in canon, not much has changed there. He’s a part of the student council.

Julius may not be the top student but he is pointed to as a model student to be looked up to and emulate. Also a part of the student council.

In game, Otto was the npc you would go to for items. Everything you need? He’s got! Although he plays a supporting role in the AU, he’s not any less fond of Subaru than the others. Don’t underestimate this codependent twink, he’s still got a leg in the (vying for Subaru’s love) competition!

Vampire IF Subaru, the unfortunate nerd who got teleported to another world full of his favorite undead creatures.

Some tidbits about him:

He grew up loving any and all vampire media, be it books, games, anime, movies etc. He's watched just about every vampire anime under the sun, but his guilty pleasure favorite is Vampire Knight, he just loves a gothic romance.

He's a lot more of a soft nerd than a sporty nerd this time, he went out in his favorite comfy hoodie the night he got isekai'd.

Natsumi Schwartz is his vampire sona and self-insert into many of his favorite stories. He's got a whole vamp goth cosplay of her hidden away in his closet. He doesn't know his parents know about it, but they're cool with it anyway, they think it's nice that their son has a hobby.

In Lugunica, he appears even more fragile than in canon, he doesn't have the increased resilience and regeneration of vampires, not to mention how he's basically chronically undernourished because human food is extremely hard to come by in a world where everyone can only drink blood. Everyone at the mansion basically had to scramble to find him a suitable food source, once Beatrice found the books to explain what the hell humans eat.

His fragility is emblematic of gothic horror protagonists, and he's gotten a newfound sympathy for those perpetually fainting Victorian ladies. It's absolutely not doing his self esteem any favors though.

It's crucial he hides his real species from anyone who isn't part of the mansion staff, if the wrong person found out he's the only human (Al is also human but he's had a lot more practice hiding it) they could very well start hunting him for sport, or worse. He wears fake fangs in public.

Elsa found out. Pretty much immediately. The loops in arc 1 consisted of at least one death by her fangs.

The duel with Julius goes even worse. Julius was in fact holding back, but he was holding back an appropriate amount for a fellow vampire, not quite enough for a barely adult human boy. Subaru gets sent flying, and Julius is extremely concerned by how breakable he is. It doesn't help that healing takes twice as long because Subaru doesn't possess vampiric regeneration.

The scent of the witch is now alongside an inherent fragrance his human blood gives off. Only vampires with stronger noses can smell it, but his bleeding makes it stronger, confusing a great many vampire because "where is that really sweet smell coming from?" He's lucky most people don't know what humans even are or what they smell like, but it does give him away more than once.

"Have you ever thought about doing that for a career?" Emilia hums to herself "like a counsellor; or a lawyer? A detective?" She smiles excitedly, picturing Rem in all the costumes.

Re: Zero Otome AU snippet

Snippet of an AU where Subaru ends up in an otome that he definitely doesn’t play

“Forgive me, but I can no longer hold my feelings back.”

Sunlight danced across Subaru’s cheeks as meadow flowers swayed in the gentle breeze. He looked back at his companion who had knelt into the grass, careful not to crush the flowers beneath them. Subaru’s eyes widened at the sight.

Wait. Wait, wait.

“For so long, I’ve felt this way about you.” The breeze brushed his companion’s hair out of their eyes, giving Subaru a full view of the glistening admiration in their eyes. The weight of their gaze was so heavy with fondness that Subaru wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it. Those weren’t the eyes meant for someone like him.

Hold on pause.

“I’ve grown extremely fond of you, Subaru.”

Please, wait a minute! This whole situation was wrong, totally wrong.

The red that overtook his so-called admirer’s face was lovely, comparable to that of rosy dawn. He almost wanted to burn the sight into his eyes, to close his eyes and forever see the flustered expression of someone who loved him. Almost. He would if not for the fact that—

“Please let me stay by your side forever, Subaru. I swear that I’ll protect and cherish you.” Reinhard’s slender fingers gently took Subaru’s hand and brought them up to his lips.

—If not for the fact that wasn’t this the sort of situation that girls are supposed to be in? A guy like Subaru isn’t the type of person whose hand should be kissed. It should instead be Emilia, beautiful and kind Emilia in this position. So why wasn’t she? Why was Subaru here in her steed?

Subaru’s face burst into flames. He reckoned the red on his face didn’t look as flattering on him as it did on Reinhard, and yet, the knight’s eyes crinkled into what could only be fondness.

Why was he the one being confessed to?!

React Fic Idea: For the Man Who Had Everything

Alright. I’ve been thinking about cracking down on a react fic for a while now so might as well give this a shot:  

To set the mood: this takes place in a future where Natsuki Subaru has passed on from natural causes. It’s a sad affair as Subaru was well regarded as one of the greatest hero’s in not just Lugunica but throughout the world for his heroic deeds – Destroying the Witch Cult, saving Vollachia from certain calamity, being the unbeatable knight and husband of ‘Good’ Queen Emilia, the contract partner of the Great Spirit Beatrice, ect. 

He’s DONE it all! So, naturally, all his friends have come to pay their final respects to such an amazing and wonderful person. 

SIDE NOTE: In this world Subaru has a sort of harem going on in which he is married to and has children with - Emilia, Rem Crusch. (This is sort of a tribute to the original react fic in which all three women wished to be in a relationship with Subaru. Another reason is to highlight that Subaru apparently achieved his ISEKAI dream. BUT as we all know looks can be deceiving)  

NOW here’s the thing though! Beatrice has been COOKING up something big. She knew Subaru was not fallible and that one day he could die and leave her behind. So, using Echidna’s old research notes she was able to create an artificial spirit whose sole purpose would be to play a tribute of Natsuki Subaru’s life and achievements (perhaps through the use of his book of the dead) within a huge theatre hall – similar to those movie theatre’s her contractor used to speak of so fondly about back in his ‘hometown.’    

Of course, there are some who are skeptical of this and who think it’s a clear violation to peer into Subaru’s most intimate and private moments (especially since he’s no longer with them)  

Others wish to see the memories and watch Subaru’s legendary exploits OR to see him make a bumbling fool of himself – Subaru’s children and Ram and Felix can be counted in this camp 

Eventually, everyone agrees to watch the show and take their respective seats.  

The artificial spirit begins the Viewing and everything seems normal enough. 

Subaru hailing from Beyond the Great Waterfall came off as quite the shock - but isn’t surprising given his peculiar behavior, mannerisms and appearance.  

Eventually Subaru and Emilia meet, and the former saves him from three muggers. Everyone coos and gwaffs as the future knight/hero tries to help the half-elf reclaim her lost insignia. It’s touching for those familiar with Emilia’s and Subaru’s relationship and hilarious to see Subaru act like such a brat and fumble through everything.  

But a few things don’t match what some of the viewers remember.  

Emilia, Felt and Reinhard are VERY confused – Perhaps they forgot? It has been a long time after all? 

Eventually the pair do locate Loot House where Emilia’s insignia was reportedly taken and Subaru volunteers to go in first and -  

Is abruptly murdered – followed by Emilia.  

The theatre becomes dead silent.  

Eh. What?  

WHAT! 

EVERYONE’s jaws collectively drop. Subaru’s children bawl their eyes out.  

No one is having a good time right now.  

And then -  

(“You wanna buy an appa?)  

...What is this???
