so there's a ton of angsty fic about dan turning herbert in to the cops post-bride. but quick thought about couple down the street: consider the angst potential of getting tracked down by law enforcement and understanding "oh fuck if they catch us we'll be separated." I'm sure that could be stretched into a longass fic, but if you're amenable, I'd love to see a drabble instead.

Detective Clark had been a particularly irritating cop in the string of law enforcement that Dan and Herbert had dealt with over the years. He was utterly fixated on catching them after his partner had been caught up in a series of rogue experiments that had escaped from the lab and run amok through the town. Clark's partner had not gotten through the experience unscathed, and the last Dan had heard of him he was being kept under psychiatric observation.

That had left Clark pursuing them, seeking revenge, which Herbert thought was quite unfair.

"We never asked them to get involved," Herbert had said testily over a mug of coffee in a dingy motel. "In fact, I'd appreciate it if they'd butt out."

The motel had been a respite stop while they regrouped and Dan planned their next move. They had seen their fair share of motels over the years. Dan felt he was perhaps overly acquainted with musty carpet and stiff bedsheets.

He was wondering if he should get a customer loyalty card as he pulled into the parking lot. He juggled the bag of groceries in one arm as he fished the key out of his pocket with the other, eventually managing to unlock the door without spilling an oranges.

"Herbert, I'm back" he called out as he closed the door and set the groceries down on the table. "How does French toast for dinner sound?"

"Sounds delightful."

Dan dropped his keys with a clatter. He was spinning around in an instant, his whole body cold at the sound of a voice that was not his husband's.

Clark was sat casually lounging in the armchair, one foot tucked over his knee as he observed Dan's panic with a smirk. Dan went still but flicked his gaze all about the tiny room, searching for-

"Hubby's not here, if that's what you're lookin' for," Clark droned. "Pity too. I would've loved to have a chat with him."

He stroked the pistol loosely gripped in his other hand. Dan followed the movement with his eyes then looked back at Clark's unreadable expression.

"What do you want?" he asked, injecting calm into his voice.

Clark shrugged. "Just thought I'd pay you a visit. Let you know I've got my eye on you."

"You should leave us alone," Dan said through his teeth and Clark let out a hearty laugh.

"Or what?" he taunted. "You'll call the police?"

Dan pressed his mouth into a thin line and said nothing. All at once Clark seemed to stop finding the situation funny and he shot to his feet. He wasn't a big man but his eyes glittered with unchecked malice as he stared Dan down.

"I still don't know exactly what happened," he breathed, "or how you did it but I'm gonna find out. And when I do and you two psychos are locked up forever, I'm gonna see to it that you wind up on the opposite ends of the god damn earth."

He stormed out, bumping his shoulder against Dan's, jostling him as he went past. Clark slammed the door behind him, leaving Dan alone in the dark. He remained rooted to the spot, his body still frozen in that moment of panic, until it shattered and he collapsed against the wall with a gasp.

He stayed there for several minutes, breathing hard and feeling like his heart was going to beat right out of his chest. When the door opened again he fumbled to grab the closest blunt object and his hands closed around the porcelain vase on the miniscule dining table. He lifted it over his head, flowers and water spilling onto the carpet, ready to bring it down on Clark's head with enough force that he'd never be able to threaten him or his husband ever again, but he stilled his hand just in time as Herbert stepped into the room.

"Dan?" Herbert sounded startled as Dan dropped the vase onto the floor. "What're you doing?"

"Nothing," Dan whispered and pulled Herbert to his chest.

Herbert made a surprised sound that became muffled against Dan's shirt but didn't fight the tight embrace Dan wrapped him up in. Instead, he gingerly patted Dan's back and glanced up at him in puzzlement.

"What's the matter with you?" he demanded. "I step out for one minute and you have a nervous breakdown?"

Dan thought about telling Herbert about Clark but decided against it. Herbert would only brush it off as though Clark were harmless, and that would only make Dan worry more. Clark's words kept circling in Dan's mind, his promise to separate the two of them driving into Dan's heart like an ice pick.

That couldn't happen. Up until that moment he hadn't fully considered the ramifications of their getting caught. Of course, he knew they would likely never see the light of day again, but he hadn't thought about how he and Herbert would most likely be torn apart.

He had sacrificed everything in his life for Herbert. Herbert was his life. Without him by his side...Dan couldn't even entertain it. He couldn't be apart from Herbert so he wouldn't be, regardless of what Clark thought on the matter.

"Are you planning on hugging me forever?" Herbert grumbled and Dan just squeezed him tighter.

"Yes," he replied simply, dropping a kiss on Herbert's head.
