Beautiful Contemporary Kitchen Ideas
The kitchen is the most interactive space of any house. Just like every space has its own story to tell, each kitchen has its own story too. With a soothing ambience and a creative décor, it can get better. Designing a contemporary kitchen in Essex is about finding perfect products that will match your taste and requirements. All of the aesthetics and functions need to be achieved within the financial limit.
Burton's Bespoke is the one-stop destination for achieving your dream kitchen & dream housing. We aim to deliver you designs that are a real asset to your home and lifestyle. Our experience and expertise have helped us narrow down some of the best kitchen trends.
Contemporary Kitchen Design trends:
Kitchen design trends nowadays are becoming innovative with clever twists. Below are the biggest and most popular trends.
Experimenting With Materials: Introduce new materials with unique techniques in cabinets, doors, and shelves are extraordinary features of a beautiful contemporary kitchen in Essex.
Smart and Practical Storage: Storage spaces are a key element of every kitchen space. The latest kitchen trends seek hidden storage techniques. These spaces will maximize space without leaving a negative impact on the look and style of the kitchen.
Multifunctional Spaces: These days repurposing the traditional kitchen into a multi-functional contemporary one is a peaking trend. Modern Kitchen shall include integrated seating areas along with multi-purpose storage solutions. It should have a breakfast bar or an island unit that serves as an all-inclusive workstation.
Marble Effect: In Essex, luxury contemporary kitchen means Marble. The durability, elegance, and unique style statement of marble work speak for themselves. An excellent marble finish work, stained with dark colours like create an affluent but homely wood texture.
Vintage Wooden: After being out of the league for a good while, Wood is back in demand. Oak or walnut wood with subtle-grained ash tones will enhance the look of the interior. Wood will provide not only aesthetics but also ecological and economic benefits.
Hygienic Factor: The coronavirus pandemic has also left an impact on the design trends. Right from selecting materials that get easily cleaned to limit touch technology for handless kitchen equipment. Hence, hygiene is a highrise factor to be kept in focus. The Handless kitchen cabinets are a major part of multi-tasking and free-flowing contemporary designs.
Aesthetic Sink And Hot Water Taps: To enhance the aesthetic value of the taps, designers are also paying a lot more attention to sink details. Sinks made up of Concrete, Marble, Granite and Corian are getting more attention in the market. We are placing more attention on sink details to enhance the styling statement of taps (from brass to matt black). Also, in-built hot water taps are a safe and energy-efficient solution for a contemporary kitchen in Essex.
Statement Lights: Apart from the drama, the lightning influences the mood of the user. The best kitchen design trend goes beyond the ubiquitous pot light and centre ceiling-mount fixture. The filament bulbs, polished finishes and sparkly chandeliers beauties & styles the kitchen illumination. The trend atop simple horizontal lighting, with a sleek light source, integrated to line kitchen cabinetry.
Gold Finishes and Metallics: When we talk about the finishes in any context, metallic is the priority for all. Metallic and Gold finishes are the most predominant feature of contemporary kitchens. May it is any appliance, shelf, lighting, taps, or anything else, metallic finishes steal everyone's heart.
Kitchen Island: If we consider a large modern kitchen to settle a balance between negative and positive spaces, Kitchen Island has now become an essential feature. A pair of island units adds up the luxury of the space.
Contrasting Finishes: Contrasting or two-tone finishes are in the highest demands in the modern kitchen designs in Essex. The combos of contrasting walls and floor mounted cabinetry; deep, dark units contrasted with brighter shades elsewhere; an island in an eye-catching hue, or teaming a darker shade of grey with a softer dove grey hue is in new trends.
Floating Shelve Décor: Floating shelves are developing new interest. It has been predicted that they are going to be the new favourite spot of each kitchen in the forthcoming days. They will be the perfect space to exhibit your kitchen accessories and high-priced appliances.
Twisted Pantries:  Pantry cupboards are kitchen staples for centuries. In the last few years, it has evolved as one of the must-have items in modern homes. They play beautiful roles in modern integrated kitchens and also give plenty of storage spaces.
Dark Accent: When it comes to selecting materials for modern kitchen tops there's an increased interest in dark shades. The surface tops decorated with dark colours like black, brown, and grey with textured woods are considered to add new charm. AS the dark colours are timeless, thus they can be used for the long term.
Sustainable: Last, but not least, if you are designing a Contemporary kitchen in Essex, use eco-friendly material. The future of modern interior design is sustainability. It’s considered progressive and caring.
Now you are well-equipped with ideas on how to modernize your kitchen dreams into a perfectly soothing Contemporary Kitchen Space. And if you think, it will be hard to do it on your own, you can always approach us. Choose Life (2010)
GUYS I really hope you love Curly as much as I do. If you don’t understand any references/slang lemme know cause I LOVE gushing about British culture cause I’m vain lol. I mostly muted it, but I didn’t wanna lose his roots.
When Jordan had said “my roommate’s back later, he’ll drive you home,” Spencer hadn’t exactly anticipated carpooling during a drug deal. He’d left that part out.
‘Curly’ has a mop of dark hair falling in ringlets around his face. He opens the window before lighting a cigarette and the brunette strands blow out of his eyes in the wind. Thick eyebrows and dark lashes frame hooded eyes that droop in the outer corners just a little. Spencer wonders how much that has to do with drugs and how much it has to do with genetics. It looks good on him, nonetheless.
The teenager watches shamelessly as the stranger holds the smoke between his lips whilst he fumbles in the storage compartment, fishing out a flip phone.
“So Spencer,” Curly mumbles around the cigarette. Spencer realises now that it’s a joint, but makes no comment. “You and Jordan are…”
“Just friends. We uh,” he breathes out a laugh, “we just met yesterday.”
The man hums, eyes darting from the road ahead to the phone he holds near to his lap, texting hurriedly as he drives before dropping the device back into the compartment.
He takes the joint from his lips and holds it between his fingers as his hand joins the other on the steering wheel. He has blue smudges over his eyelids and something sparkly scattered in his hair and Spencer feels like he’s in another world. He’s obscurely beautiful.
“You’re just messing about?”
Spencer just shrugs at first, until Curly takes his eyes off the road to look at him expectantly like Spencer owes him this much. “I guess. I’m not sure I’d even label it as—“
“I’m taking the piss, love.” Curly has an accent that Spencer can’t quite place, a loose drawl throwing him off. “J doesn’t bring anyone back to the flat unless it’s for sex or drugs. The only reason he keeps me around anymore is because my Molly is mint.”
Spencer hums this time as he turns back around in his seat and props his feet up on the filthy dashboard, head still turned in the man’s direction as Curly continues to speak about not being able to feel his fingers and it being the best feeling in the world.
Unsure of how to respond, Spencer instead asks, “what kind of name is Curly,” which the man seems to find funny, his answer held up for a moment as he giggles at the bluntness of the question.
“The kids at school used to call me Curly Wurly, after this candy bar they sell in England.” He’s smiling as he explains. “It just stuck. I can’t remember the last time anybody but my mum used my real name.”
“So you are British?”
“I am,” he confirms, sounding proud and Spencer wants to tell him how hot that is, but instead says “cool” and looks back towards the road.
*****
Curly is rarely home, apparently, because the next time Spencer sees him is around three weeks later. He gets a call from Jordan during Geography and tells his teacher it’s an emergency as he slips out of the room with his phone pressed against his ear. Turns out it was. The idiot got arrested and needed a babysitter for his roommate whom “absolutely cannot spend the night alone.”
“What a prick,” is Curly’s immediate reaction, but he’s smiling with those same hooded eyes as he rocks back and forth in the doorway of the apartment. His eyelids are grey-black today, and Spencer’s not sure if his irises are dark or his pupils are dilated, but the charcoal compliments it either way. His nails are orange and his hair is free of glitter but far from clean as it falls manically over his head.
“I was meant to stay here tonight,” Spencer lies to save the man’s pride, arms crossed as his eyes dart from his face and into the apartment where an open door at the other side projects bright colours around the distant room. The colours switch in time with the heavy electro beat that shakes the corridor.
“Well. A’ight then,” he mumbles, rubbing a hand over his belly as the fingertips of the other tap against the doorframe until he steps aside. “You better come in.”
***
“… Keh?” Spencer frowns, arms folded on the coffee table in front of him as his ass grows numb against the trodden-down carpet. Curly’s sorting through baggies on the surface with one hand as he chews on the thumbnail of the other. He pulls his hand from his mouth as he shakes his head.
“Ket-t-t.” he corrects, adding more than enough emphasis to the T this time. Spencer’s learned that his accent doesn’t allow for that to come naturally. “Ketamine.”
“Right. Which is?”
“A drug.” His reply is short, but he glances up through his lashes with a smug smile before he adds, “an anesthetic. Times fifty. Dead good if you don’t fancy feeling your arse for an hour or so.”
“I don’t need drugs for that on your shitty carpet,” Spencer retorts and Curly just tells him to piss off as he begins to cram small, clear ziplock bags into a tin box.
He holds up both of his pointer fingers to suggest one moment as he raises to his feet without the assistance of his hands. He waltzes over to a door that Spencer’s never entered which, when he opens it, spits out the rumbling bass from earlier, forgotten behind the wood that’s just thick enough to dull the impact enough to provide nothing but a heavy hum.
Spencer watches him mess with something on the top of his dresser as the flashing lights from his TV continue to illuminate the room. Curly leans over the surface, tight curls becoming a veil to hide his face. Spencer doesn’t need to see his face or the chipped wood to know what he’s sniffing. The man knocks his head back then, hair flung from his eyes as he stares up at the ceiling, arms hung at his side as his chest rises and falls. Spencer continues to watch until Curly stumbles backward, away from the doorway and out of view.
The teenager takes a sip of his water and places his glass back on the CD that serves as a coaster. He listens as Curly flicks through a few tracks in his bedroom, until he’s satisfied enough to reenter the lounge, closing the door behind him to return them to the dull and comfortable murmur.
“D’you want anythin’,” Curly asks, and Spencer can’t help but notice that the further gone he looks, the looser his pronunciation becomes. Vowels melt between softened consonants and feathered digraphs, giving away the man’s rough edges.
Spencer shakes his head -absolutely not- and instead asks, “where in England are you from?”
“Essex.” He doesn’t sound emotionally involved as he expands; “East London. A shithole,” and crashes onto the couch behind Spencer, who turns to lean back against the coffee table to maintain eyes on the man. “Until I was eighteen.”
Curly sticks out his tongue like it’s too big for his mouth, and stays like that for a while as his gaze returns to the ceiling, eyes wandering up, up, up, until they’re almost all white. Then suddenly, his mouth pulls into a grin and his eyes are on Spencer again.
“And now I’m here, and I can’t fucking see.”
“And we’re smiling about that?”
Curly nods slowly, his smile diluting as he mumbles “yeh” before the dim room falls silent.
There’s no bulb in the ceiling fixture and the only source of light now is the streetlight outside the window, shining intrusively into the room as the curtains lay in a pile on the ground. The floor is covered in bottles and cans and the carpet is soiled with stains that Spencer doesn’t want to know about. He’s been here for a couple of hours, and it feels like he’s only just catching his breath.
Curly’s shirt is gone - Spencer can’t remember when that happened - and his tattoos are far more sporadic than Jordan’s, whose chest looks like a complete piece in comparison to Curly’s dotted doodles. He has one nipple pierced and the bar matches his orange nails, Spencer notes as the man drags a trembling hand over his chest, which rises as falls as if he’d been thrashing and shrieking for the past two hours as opposed to sorting pills and powders on a coffee table. Spencer doesn’t feel safe and he’s hungry and the room is cold but everything about the man has his brain chanting stay.
Curly screams for the sake of it and the silence shatters.
“Love. Let’s dance.”
***
“You’re ridiculous,” Spencer pants, eyes bright and eager so as not to miss a beat as Curly moves against him, hands holding the teenager’s face as he sings against his cheek. It’s a song Spencer’s never heard, which makes sense since Curly introduced the playlist as “the best Brit classics you’ll ever fucking hear!”
He doesn’t really get the music; the pronunciation is just as lazy as Curly’s and the words of almost every song paint a painfully average picture. Curly belts them out though, like he resonates with them, and it somehow keeps him captivated. Nostalgia, Spencer thinks.
He grins against Spencer’s cheek, so close that his teeth graze his skin as he says, “you’re gorgeous.”
“You’re high.”
“So fucking high,” Curly agrees as he steps back, linking their fingers and holding their joined hands above their heads to twirl himself beneath them before it turns into what Spencer swears is a lazy jive.
He laughs as he lets himself fall against the wall, panting as Curly goes on, spinning and swaying around the room like a hurricane, stumbling on trash and dishes as he goes. He continues to sing, yelling out “you’re all sheeps and cattle!” as he points to the streetlight outside. Spencer’s almost riled himself up enough to push himself away from the wall and back into the centre of the room when the apartment door opens, and a head of buzzed blonde hair ducks into the room.
Jordan takes one look at Curly and grumbles “oh fuck me” as he paces across the lounge and into his housemate’s room, barely glancing Spencer’s way. The apartment falls into a screeching silence before he reemerges. Spencer’s ears ring in the absence of the music and Curly wines at Jordan for turning it off.
“I’ve been gone for less than twenty-four hours and you’ve turned the apartment into Beverley’s.”
Still bouncing on his toes, hands held awkward and limp against his chest, Curly says, “Beverley’s is a mint bar,” just as Spencer asks, “who’s Beverley?”
Jordan just rolls his eyes, snatching a lighter from the side and pulling a cigarette from his pocket as Curly goes on to explain exactly why Beverley’s is ‘more than just an Irish pub’.
“Yeah, I’m really great, thanks for asking,” the blonde grumbles over him sarcastically and falls back onto the couch. “What was jail like? Oh, y’know. Cold. Lonely.”
“What happened?” Spencer’s question comes out quiet and he shuffles across the room to sit beside him. Curly’s still talking but it’s mostly to himself now.
“Oh, well, as well as finding the weed in my car, they found your fucking money-” he points at Curly, finally regaining his attention. “- and thought I was dealing. What the fuck was your cash doing in my car, Curly?”
“Was hiding it,” Curly mumbles and Spencer’s pretty sure that, if the guy had one, his tail would be tucked between his legs now.
“Of course you were,” he scoffs, smoke clouding his breath. “Keep me out of it, alright? I smoke, I don’t deal. Fuckin’ lucky they didn’t keep me.”
Curly perches on the edge of the coffee table, nodding as he says, “sorry mate,” and proceeds to knock Spencer’s water onto the ground. There are worse things in the carpet, and they all seem to think the same thing, judging by the fact that they ignore it as it soaks into the ground. Probably an improvement, if anything.
“S’alright. They couldn’t charge me,” he shrugs after a long pause. He looks dissatisfies even as he visibly shakes it off like he doesn’t have time to dwell. “Have you eaten yet?” Before the question is even entirely out, Spencer says no. “Cool. Chinese, then. And then-“ he wraps an arm around Spencer’s shoulders. “- I’m taking you home.”
“But-“
“Curly’s gonna need my full attention tonight, sweetheart.” He’s already holding his phone to his ear and, before Spencer can argue, he asks, “what’s your order?”
***
Curly doesn’t make it until the arrival of the food, so Spencer doesn’t go home after all. The man passes out on the floor mid-way through tidying up after himself. Jordan tells Spencer “get your ass in there” once they’ve eaten, and nods towards his own room with the first smile Spencer’s seen from him since he got home.
“How did you meet him?” Spencer asks around an hour later, under the sheets as he watches Jordan search for his underwear on the ground and step back into them.
“Mutual friends. He works at the club now.” There’s a heavy silence, like something else is bursting to be said. He adds, “we dated for a while,” with a short laugh, like it’s not a big deal.
*****
Spencer thinks it might be a big deal. There’s a guy called Jeff that used to work at the tattoo parlour who’s throwing a party to ‘get it all out of his system’ before he starts college - he’d said “it’s never too late” before they all cheered to it. It’s a Wednesday which is ridiculous, but the turn-out isn’t half bad.
Spencer’s spent more time with Curly than he has with Jordan tonight, because the two men seem to be arguing and, well, Curly can’t take care of himself these days. Spencer’s not had a drop of alcohol - wouldn’t dream of it in a place like this - but he lost Curly for a little while and, when he resurfaced, his eyes were wide and his body was all bones and no muscle.
The man is just as pale as ever and his plain white shirt only has three buttons fastened. He wipes his palm over the sheen of his chest, hand hanging loosely from his wrist. He moves like a marionette as he says, “I just fucking miss it all,” eyes on the house. He sways a little, then allows himself to fall to his side. It’s as if his strings are released when he collapses onto Spencer, his limbs landing wherever they land and his head landing in Spencer’s lap by pure fortune.
“What do you miss?” Spencer shifts a little, because the wall they’re sat on is digging into his ass and Curly’s weight isn’t helping.
“He’s mad at me again. I said I’d stop,” he wines as he rubs his face against Spencer’s knee. “He won’t wait forever.”
He combs his fingers through Curly’s hair. “What’s he waiting for?” There’s a silent understanding that ‘he’ is the short blonde that’s leaned against the kitchen sink inside, back to the window ahead of them. “Curly?”
“I feel sick.”
“Okay. You wanna go?” Spencer helps him sit up again, already standing from the wall and letting the man hold onto his elbows. Curly lets go to wipe the back of his hand beneath his nose, and when he pulls it away, blood smudges his face.
“You can go. I’ll wait for J.”
“No, c’mon. We’ll find some space inside.”
Inside is the last place he wants to be, having found an undeniable disliking for parties like these just recently, but it’s October and it’s cold and he doesn’t want to leave by himself anyway.
There’s a front and back lounge, and they find an armchair for the both of them to squeeze onto but they’re barely there for ten minutes before a group of boys is dragging Curly off again. They call him ‘Curls’ and Spencer feels a pang of jealousy as he’s forced to acknowledge that, despite having spent the last three hours alone with him among the crowds, Curly is not his person.
He lets him go with his friends, who help him to his feet and ruffle his hair as they go, and the timing seems almost too perfect for it to be a coincidence when Jordan slips through the group of people to claim Spencer.
“Finally. You’re all mine.” He pulls Spencer up by the hand and he must be drunk because he’s beaming. He says, “been waiting my fuckin’ turn,” which Spencer actually kind of hates, but he returns the kiss that the man takes from him anyway and lets him drag him away, back into the kitchen.
He pushes Spencer into the room, crowded up against his back with his hands on his stomach, beneath his shirt - cropped, thanks to Curly who recons the past of fashion is the future of fashion - as he announces “here he is!”
It’s mostly men in the room and Jordan’s introductions go right over his head, but his chest against Spencer’s back is the comfort he’s been needing to feel all night. He nods politely, smiles at a few of Jordan’s friends, and whispers over his shoulder, “Curly’s upstairs. He doesn’t look so good.”
Jordan just scoffs, mutters “fucking idiot,” and grabs the back of Spencer’s neck with one hand and the neck of a bottle with the other.

Best Laminates Company in Essex
Laminate flooring is a popular consumer option that comes in various finishes, from wood to natural, allowing you to customize the look and feel of your space. This product is ideal for hallways, living rooms, and entryways.
Are you from Essex and looking for the best laminates company in Essex? Then you are on the right page. In this article, we will be discussing top laminate companies in Essex. So, stay tuned…!
What is Laminate Made Of?
Wear, construction, core, and back layers are the four layers that makeup laminate flooring. Each layer has a distinct function and is fused with extreme heat and pressure. A breakdown of these layers can be found below.
Back Layer: The bottom layer protects the plank from moisture and helps to balance the floor.
Core Layer: A durable, high-density board sits above the back layer, protecting it from creases and moisture.
Design Layer: A high-resolution photograph of the floor's surface appearance is located above the core layer.
Wear Layer: The top layer, made of aluminum oxide, is a transparent layer that protects against fading, stains, and surface burns.
 Types of laminates:
Decorative laminates – In terms of finishes and patterns, these are more appealing. Decorative overlays on furniture can be made with decorative laminates. And there are a lot of them to choose from! Consider some of the most prevalent decorative laminates.
Industrial laminates – These have a higher tensile strength and are less prone to wear and tear. In hospitals and other industries, they include high-performance laminates that are fire retardant, antibacterial, and chemical resistant.
Compact laminates – These pretty thick ones are self-supporting and do not require any other material to be glued to.
Post-formed laminate – These flexible laminates are much thinner than traditional laminates. They're used to wrap tables, columns, and other objects.
High-pressure and low-pressure laminates – HPL is typically used with plywood, while LPL is generally used with MDF. The only difference between the two is the pressure with which the laminate is applied to a substrate.

Different types of materials you can find at a reclamation yard
Reclamation yard is an amazing place to find interesting and inspirational items for your home, your garden, or even your workplace but they can be intimidating to some people. There is so much material, which means it can be tricky to know exactly what you’re getting yourself in for. Here is a list of items you can find at the reclaim yard.
Wood
Wooden items are very common at the reclamation yard Essex. You should look out for more phenomenal items like period window shutters, but you will also surely find doors and flooring - reclaimed and new.
Doors
Doors are very usual at reclaim yard Chelmsford and there is generally something for everyone. So no matter you are looking for period doors, something exclusive, or even a bespoke door made on-site, you should be covered.
Flooring
A majority of the reclamation yards will stock a wide range of flooring, assisting customers to create the look they are after, whatever that might be. You could be looking for authentic parquet wood flooring or modern, engineered wood, or even waiting for inspiration to strike: indifferent, a reclamation yard is a place to look for.
Building materials
A majority of the architects and interior designers look forward to reclamation yards for building materials, either for reference or for when they are designing a rustic-style material. They are very much popular with industry professionals since there is such a broad range of interesting and palatable items on view.
Bricks
One of the most generally sought after items, bricks are a big selling point for reclamation yards specifically in more recent past when exposed brick has become a staple in stylish homes. No matter if you’re looking to create the real design with original bricks, or just create the look with brick slips, reclamation yards are the place to look for.
Tiles and Paving
For your roof, for your floor, or for your back garden, these yards are a great place to find interesting and uncommon tiles for all of the varied areas of your home.
Furniture
Unique, recycled, original, and period furniture are all components of reclamation yards. These are the things a lot of people brood to reclamation yards for something one-off that no one else will have in their home or property.
Radiators
As it is true with most fireplaces and log burners, conventional and original cast iron radiators are not easy to simulate in the right way. There can be no better place than these yards for this material.

A chat with Ghostmvrks
The music market today is becoming saturated with artists left, right, and centre who are without a question, not holding back to bending genres to make their own sound. Through the grapevine, I am hearing about more and more of these artists, who’s background lies in experiences of playing instruments in bands, and they are not afraid to express themselves through a unique merging of multiple influences
Ghostmvrks is no exception to this emergence of artists, who’s demographic is aimed towards those who enjoy the heartfelt influences of emotional guitar music, blended with the accessible rhythms of modern day trap music. Join me as I venture into the smoke-filled conservatory of Ghostmvrks’ house to dive deeper into the face behind the music.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Myself (left) with Ghostmvrks (right)
So, who are you?
I am Ghostmvrks, real name Chris Wood, raised in Essex Stansted and I’m 23
How old were you when you first started playing music?
I got my first guitar when I was 8. I didn’t touch the thing for 4 years so it wasn’t until I was 12 when I decided I wanted to do, just as a hobby y’know? I started writing my own music when I was 14/15. My decision to take it seriously was when I was 19, and I’ve been spending the last years working towards that.
What is your repertoire/music background?
Well, I joined my first band “16 Floors” when I was 17, doing Vocals and Guitar - nothing revolutionary sounding. I also played in “Jewels” as rhythm guitarist before switching over to bassist during the last months of the project.
You were in a band?  Tell us more about this and were there any releases?
Yes, I was in an Indie band called Jewels back in Essex - we broke up a year ago and the planned tours and releases we had died with the name of the band. I do have 3 secret tracks under the name of “Birch Wilson” that can be found on Spotify - a sporadic upload from my college days which basically just shows me getting to grips with electronic music.
Onto your current music, how would you describe it?
I would describe my music as Pop that derives from A LOT of subgenres. I aim to keep it accessible and not out of the ordinary
So what are the influences behind this project?
Lots of Emo, Hip Hop, the darker side of Pop, and a handful of Metal - Metal was the first genre I fell in love with really so it plays a part in my music. Though I will say I draw a lot of the influence from the new wave of Hip Hop artists that moreso consider themselves Singer/Songwriters like the Hip Hop/Pop crossover Black Bear, and the current trend of Emo Trap - not necessarily am I influenced by them, just my blend of sounds formed a similar sounding style than theirs, but they could have similar influences to me. However, I do pull a lot of production influences from artists like Tycho and Com Truise in terms of soundscapes; I just love the etheral space in their music which plays a huge part in the sounds I want to create.
Do you have any releases or tours?
As Ghostmvrks? No not yet. I have plenty in the barrel though so keep your ears peeled for them!

Tales of the Heart, Ch. 15 - Now I Got My A’s and Z’s
by essie-essex
for citywatchoverseer
City Watch Guard
“He taught himself how to read.”
There oh... uh... once was a cat named Ollie who lived in a co-cozy ho-hose... hoss... a house, a cozy house, with his Mama, Papa, Bro-Bruh-Brother, and... Sister. But Ollie was no oh-or-di-na-ry cat. He was very c-curious and... oh-often got into tr... tr... trou-ble.
Un... One cold w-win-ter eh... ehven... even... e-ven-ing, it beg-an to s-snow...
...and s-snow, and snow, and SNOW. Haha.
“Oh, boy!” said Ollie. “My f-first w-win-ter!”
Ollie le-leapt on-to the... the, uh... the w-win-dow-sill, his eye-eyes fo-fol-low-ing the stra-strange white dots as they flo-a... flo-floated to the ground. He put his paws up to the cold gla-glass, rai... rais... rais-ing himself up on his two hi-hind legs to get a bet-better look. Brother and Sister played ou-out-side, thro-throwing hand... fuls of white po-po-pow-powder at each other, their ch... cheeek... cheeks and noses red and ro-round. Ollie's tail swis... swis-sh... swished with, oh boy, ex... exit... exit-me-excitement as he watched them.
“How I would love to play in the snow,” Ollie said, his eyes filled with de-des-desire. “I would buh... buh... bur... burr-ow under it oo... uh-until I found the per-fect spot, warm and dark.”
The cat til-tilt-tilted his head back, pee-king at the door. Papa sat in his big chair reading a book, and Ollie could hear Mama in the kit-kitchen.
Surely, they would not not-notice...
Ollie ju-jumped to the gro-ground and cro... croch... croached... no, crouched, he crouched low, ti-tip-tip-toe-ing his way to the front door where the ch-child-ren would be re... ret-returning at any mo-ment, and when they open-opened the door, he would spr... sprin... sprint out into the snow and bur-bury himself in it before they could catch him.
He heard fa-faint la... lau... log... log-ha... lag... la... laugh-laughter as the ch-children ne-nea-neared the door and his ears per... perk... perked as he heard moo... muh... muffleh... muffle... muffled sto-stomp-ing.
“Ready... Ready...” he said to himself. He dar-dared not move. It was almost time.
The door click-clicked as one of the children turned the dork-door-doorknob, the door crack-ing open a mom-moment later. Ollie star-star-ted to change-charge but stopped sud-den-ly as the cold breeze cau... caused his skin to shiv-shiver. The children enter-ed the house, brus-brushing white powder from their coats.
“The door will close soon,” Ollie said. “This is my last chance!”
He took a deep breath, cr-crouched low, and chan-charged outside.
I let my arm drop, still holdin' the open book between my fingers, and sigh.
When I got this book from the library, the lady told me that this was for kids, but Ollie the Cat's First Winter by T.J. Brownstone ain't no easy reader. I can feel myself gettin' tired, and my head kinda hurts.
I probably shouldn't be readin' durin' my shift, but it can get real borin' just standin' here waitin' for somethin' to happen. It's kinda rainy today, so the market ain't too crowded, so that means no fights over the last fresh fish to break up, no youngsters stealin' sweets to chase after, and no pretty ladies to holler at. Nope, nothin' to do but just stare at the sky... or read if you know how.
I hear laughter from in front of me and spot two boys in worn clothes whisperin' to each other. I guess the rain didn't keep everyone away. They stop, the larger one takin' a few steps towards me.
“Hey, aren't you reading Ollie the Cat?” The boy looks up at me with tight lips and somethin' that ain't just innocent curiosity hidden behind his eyes.
“Yeah, what about it?” I say, pullin' my shoulders back. “Shouldn't you kids be at home anyways?”
“It's a free city,” the boy says. “We're just walking home from school.”
“Yeah, well, keep walkin'. I gotta job to do,” I tell him.
“You didn't look like you were doing your job. You looked like you were reading an Ollie the Cat book.” The little brat smirks.
“Well, you kids just don't know any better. Now, scram.”
The boy snorts, his mouth tight and his face red. He looks back at the other, who has the same expression on his face, like he thinks somethin's funny.
“That's a kids' book,” the boy says. “Like for babies. I read all the Ollie the Cat books when I was nine.” He turns to look at his friend behind him, who giggles.
“Yeah,” says the smaller boy. “Me too. Isn't that the one where Ollie goes outside in the winter and freezes--”
“Hey!” I scream. “Don't give it away! I ain't read the whole thing yet!”
The boys jump at the sound of my voice, but pretty soon they ain't scared no more and start laughin'.
“Wow, City Watch Guards really are dumb!” The taller boy says. His little friend giggles along with him, but I'm about done with their shit.
I draw my sword and lunge towards 'em, like I'm about to attack.
“Yeah, keep laughin' when you're in damn pieces on the ground!”
The boys scream, scurryin' away like rats, and I watch until they're out of sight, takin' a deep breath to calm myself.
“It's okay, Murray,” I say. “They're just a bunch of spoiled kids.”
That's right. They're a bunch of spoiled schoolboys. Not everyone had the money to go to school when they was kids.
I grew up during the Morley Insurrection, when spyin' on your neighbor, makin' sure they wasn't helpin' the Morlish (or the “Morleyans” as we was s'posed to call 'em, just to piss 'em off), or that, stars forbid, they was Minnows themselves, was much more important than goin' to school or doin' any kinda work that wasn't helpin' the Empire win against the rebels.
There was plenty of jobs with the war on, and the factory fatcats was glad to get their hands on any children, so they could work 'em hard. An eighteen-hour workday, each and every day, is what I remember from my childhood. But there was bread to eat and bunks to sleep in. Sure, they was dirty, but they was indoors. I sent my pay home to my parents so they could take care of my sisters and brothers who was too young to work.
So, no, I didn't have no time to read like the little brats these days, but that don't make 'em better than me. Hell, I'm better than them, since I learned how to read all on my own. That's right, all by myself. No one helped me learn my letters.
Now that I know how to read, though, there's plenty around to practice with. It's crazy how many signs they got posted 'round the city, and there's even more than usual in the marketplace with words like “FRESH FISH” “HOMEMADE SOAP” “GARDEN VEGETABLES” “RARE FRUITS” and “BAKERY”. I tried to read them all when I first started learnin' my letters, but now those signs are so easy to read, I can understand 'em all in just a second or two.
I've learned a lot from readin' posters on the walls and such, too. Like the recruitment ads for the City Watch say guards are s'posed to make a whole four coins a day, and Officers make six coins. I ain't never seen more than three coins in a day, and lately they've been givin' me just two. I told this to the others so maybe we could get together and ask for our real pay, but they just told me to quit bein' so smart.
“You read it on a poster?” Jackson was the first one to speak when I told the boys about our pay.
“Yeah, we're s'posed to be gettin' four whole coins a day,” I 'member foldin' my arms and leanin' against my bunk, thinkin' I was somethin'. Like I was gonna start some kinda movement, leadin' all the guards in the Watch through the streets holdin' up signs. But that attitude didn't last for long.
“I think he's just makin' that up,” another one of the guards said from across the room. “You can't even read anyways.”
“I learned,” I said. “Well, I'm learnin', but the poster really does say that. There's one right next door. Just come with me, and--”
“You tryin' to get us fired, Murray? Quit bein' so smart.” Jackson turned toward the door. “Now, I'm gonna go steal me some food, and then I know a certain lady who's waitin' for these two coins in my pouch. You all comin'?”
The others followed Jackson, leavin' me alone. Just a year ago, I never would'a passed up a night with  a girl, but sometimes a man just wants somethin' more.
I'd thought that by learnin' to read that maybe I'd feel better about myself or the world or somethin' like that, but I don't know. Now instead of others makin' fun of me for bein' dumb, my own fellow guards make fun of me for bein' too smart.
But now that I can read faster, I'm startin' to get why there's people that actually like to read. Some books are really interestin'.
My shift ends, and I head back to the bunks while the others go for a drink.
I wish that boy from earlier today hadn't told me what would happen to Ollie the Cat. So, he freezes to death? I take the book out of my bag, flippin' through it and lookin' at the pictures. On one page, I can see Ollie racin' out the front door into the snow. I turn the page and see a picture of a sad little cat, all curled up in a ball, with icicles hangin' from its fur.
Poor Ollie.
But the book's not over. There's more. I turn the page and gasp. Papa carries Ollie into the house. He's alive!
I turn the page again. Now he's in front of the fireplace, and on the next page, he's smilin' and warm, and on the next—wait.
I slam the book shut.
No, I gotta read it. I can't just look at the pictures.
Cold and wet, Ollie had no energ-energy to run from Papa and, in-stead, curl-ed... curled up in his arms, shiv-shivering v-vio-vio-lent-ly. He cried when Papa tried to put him down, hanging on tight to his clothes with his sharp claws. Fin-finally, Papa man-aged... managed to set Ollie on the floor, where Sister and Brother waited for him with two flu-ffy to-wels. They dried him off as well as they could, and handed him to Mama, who w-wrap-ped... wrapped him in a soft blan... blanket.
“Let's put you some-place nice and warm,” she said, cudd-ling him in her arms. Papa picked up a box and took a woo... wood-en stick from it. Ollie watched the stick, which nor-normally, would have looked very fun to play with, but he was far too cold to play. With a quick g-g-gues... gest... gesture, Papa stuck it against the box, making o-rang... o-range light come from it.
“How strange,” Ollie said, tilt-ing his head to the side. Thog...though Papa had now cau-caught his at-ten-ti-on, he was still much too cold to do anything but watch laz-lazily from Mama's arms.
Papa put the stick into a hole be-hind a grat-grating. Ollie had never not-not-noticed that hole before. It looked like a great place to hide. But Ollie was too cold to think of hid-ing there now.
Wips-wisps of smoke and then orange waves grew from the bo-ttom of the hole, con-sum-ing the large chunks of wood in its in-ter-i-or. Ollie watched the flames. They were like nothing he had ever seen before. Mama took him closer and set him down, and Papa replac-ed... replaced the grat-ing, ob-scur-ing the dan-king... dancing fig-ur-es... figures. Ollie was dis-a-ppoin-ted. He wanted to watch them dance, but he was too cold to arg-argue. He lay in front of the fireplace, feeling the warm-th flow from it. Oh, how good that warmth would feel ag-ainst his skin. How good it would be to bury himself in warm orange waves.
Ollie stood, get-ting closer to the fireplace, but Mama st-stopped him.
“No, no, Ollie. That is fire. It is hot. You cannot get too close, or you will get burn-ed... burned.”
But Ollie did not un-der-stand. What was hot? Like a hot sum-mer's day? He could almost puh-purr, think-ing of the past summer when he lay out under the sun, while Mama stood near-by fan-fanning herself with her hand.
“W-hew, it's so hot today,” Ollie re-mem-ber-ed... remembered her saying. “It feels like I'm burn-ing up out here.”
So, hot was not bad at all! Mama mig-might not like it, but Ollie lov-loved when it was hot.
Hearin' voices outside, I look up from the text and close the book. The boys are back, drunk and loud as usual. I have a bad feelin' about this story, but I'll have to finish it later.
But I'm so worried about Ollie that I can't even sleep.
That mornin', the boys and I reach the marketplace and then go our separate ways, heading to our posts. Up ahead is Lee, who does the shift before me. He's singin' a song. I can't make it out at first, but as I get closer I hear the familiar tune of the A's and Z's song.
“A, B, C, D, E, N, G/ haych, I, J, K, elementally,” he sings.
I can't help but laugh.
“It's not 'elementally'. It's 'L, M, N, O, P,'” I almost say, but I don't wanna come off as a smart-ass.
It's funny how easy it is for me to sing that song now. When I first tried to learn it, I couldn't understand it. It was just a bunch'a sounds. How could anyone memorize it?
I 'member first hearin' it bein' sung by a bunch'a little kids goin' to school. They walked behind their teacher in a straight line, and she sang right along with them. It was the weirdest song I'd ever heard. It didn't have no words in it – at least not until, “Now I know my A's and Z's/Tell me what you think of me.”
Now, I was at least smart enough to know that A's and Z's meant letters. So that's what all that gibberish was. The kids was learnin' their letters!
Every mornin', I tried to listen to the whole song, but I never caught the whole thing, and I still didn't know what any of it meant. Finally, one day I just went up and asked.
I 'member the teacher saw me comin' and slowed down before she put her arm out to shield the children.
“Hello, Ma'am,” I said, rememberin' to be polite, of course.
“Good day,” the teacher said. She eyed me real cautious, like she was scared I was gonna attack her or somethin'. “Is there something I can help you with?”
“No, I mean, yeah. I was, uh--” I took a deep breath. “I just wanna know what that song is you're singin'.”
“What song are we singing?” The teacher's eyes got wide, and she looked at me like there was somethin' funny. “It's the A's and Z's song. We're reciting the alphabet.”
“So, that's letters, right?” I asked.
“That's, uh, that's correct, yes.” The teacher nodded. “Um, is there anything else?” she asked, after I didn't say nothin' for a moment.
“Could I learn it, too?”
The teacher opened her mouth and closed it again.
“I – sure. I mean, I could.” She stopped to think for a moment. “We could use an escort on our way to the school. I much prefer walking my students there to letting them go by themselves, but I would feel much safer with an actual guard to protect us.”
I knew I wasn't supposed to just leave my post, but I only had to walk them to school and then I'd be right back. Plus, there was other guards nearby.
“Sure,” I agreed. “And you'll teach me the song?”
“You can learn right along with us,” she said. She took a piece of paper from a bag hanging on her shoulder.
“Oh, I can't read,” I said, lookin' at all the funny symbols on the paper.
“Well, each one of those is a letter. So, here's A, B, C...” she pointed to each as she said it. “Let's get going. Children? A's and Z's, but let's sing it very slowly so... Sorry, I didn't get your name.”
“Murray,” I told her.
“And I'm Helena Delaney,” she said, smilin' kinda quick and then turnin' to the kids. “Okay, let's sing slowly so that Murray can read along with us.”
The moment I heard her say those words, I couldn't help but think how strange it sounded. “...so that Murray can read along with us.” Me. Readin'. How crazy was that? But I guess it was also kind of excitin'.
The school kids' voices interrupt my thoughts, and I wave Lee off and take his place.
“Murray! Hi, Murray! Good morning, Murray!” the kids all say as the line approaches with their teacher, Miss Delaney, at the front.
“Good morning, Murray,” she says, smiling.
“Mornin' Miss Delaney. Mornin' kids,” I say, givin' them all a big wave.
“Shall we carry on?” says Miss Delaney, and they head off, the A's and Z's song startin' automatically as I line up behind them.
“So, Murray, how is the reading going?” Miss Delaney asks.
We've arrived at the school, and all the kids are gettin' ready for the day and sittin' at their desks. I notice the familiar A's and Z's chart at the front of the classroom. I can recognize all the letters real easy now, and to think I used to not know what any of it meant.
“It's goin' pretty fine,” I answer. “I'm readin' a book about this cat. His name's Ollie.”
“Oh, Ollie the Cat. A bit too advanced for my children, but I'm still very familiar with those books. Which one are you reading?”
I lift up my helmet to rub the back of my head.
“It's the one where it's snowin' and Ollie goes outside.”
“Oh, that one.” Miss Delaney frowns and shakes her head. “Those books are always so tragic for an animal lover like me, but that one was especially sad.”
“Don't tell me!” I nearly yell, holding my hands up. “I haven't finished it yet.”
“Okay, okay!” Miss Delaney chuckles, putting her hands out. “Calm down, I won't spoil it for you.”
“Thanks,” I say, relaxing my arms. “Well, I gotta go back to my post. I'll see you tomorrow.” I turn to the kids. “Bye, kids!”
“Bye, Murray!” They all say, and I turn to leave while Miss Delaney starts class.
Time to get back to Ollie.
The flames wigg-led wiggle-wiggled and pop-popped, dancing in a way that made them almost ir-re-sis-ti-ble... irre-sistible to a cat like Ollie. He watched the emb-ers float into the air and disappear as he w-hipp-ed... w-hipped his tail back and for-th, his eyes con-cen-tra-ting in-ten-se-ly on the tan-ta-li-zing fire.
But how would he get past the grating? He would have to move it, but sure-ly Mama or Papa would stop him before he could get past.
He sc-scanned the room, noticing-noting that the children had gone to bed and Mama and Papa sat do-doz-dozing off on the nearby sofa. So, he stood, war-i-ly stepping forward, his eyes locked on the nearly-sleeping couple. Creep-ing toward the bar-bar-ri-er s-se-pa-ra-ting him and the fire, he put his claws through the grating and yank-yanked it right down. It fell to the floor with a loud cla-clank that nearly made him dart in the other di-rec-tion, but he clamed-calmed himself and jumped on the grating, ready to make the final po-pounce.
“Ollie! No!”
The sound had wo-ken Mama and Papa, and they stoo-d, making their way to him. Ollie pa-nic-ked... panicked. He didn't have much time. The warmth from the fire toa-toast-toasted his skin like a hot summer's day, but he wanted those fla-mes flames for himself. He pounced, ready to trap the w-rig-gling w-riggling fire under his paws, as Mama sc-rea-m-ed... sc-reamed from behind him.
But soon he was the one sc-rea-ming.
“Hot! Hot! Hot!” he scree-ched... screeched. The fire was too hot. He bat-ted at the flames co-ver-ing his body, trying to keep them away, but it was no use as the fire cha-char-red... charred his bea-u-tiful fur, turn-ing it to the color of ash. Ollie screamed and screamed and screamed until his black-en-ed... blackened body went still, his life having fl-fled his us-use-useless co-corpse.
The End.
I can't believe it.
“Hey, Murray, you comin'?”
What in the Void just happened?
It's the end of my shift, and my buddies are all ready to go, but I clutch the book in my hand, my heart banged up and all but broken.
“No, you all go on. I'm gonna take a walk,” I say and push past 'em without sayin' another word.
You know, I figured things wouldn't turn out good for Ollie, but still the endin's left me kinda down. I got just as much into that book as someone would get into a story bein' told 'round the fire--
The fire.
Emotion hits me and leaves me with a bad feelin' in my stomach. Why'd that cat have to be so damn stupid?
I curse Ollie and T. J. Brownstone and the damn librarian that gave me the book and the goddamn library that kept the book on its shelves like it wasn't nothin' but another kid's story, just like the rest.
“Murray, what are you doing here?”
I walk into the classroom, and seein' the look on Miss Delaney's face, I let the tears fall.
“Is something wrong?” Miss Delaney asks. Her eyes get real wide, and she looks from side to side, but I'm too busy blubberin' to notice.
“Ollie died,” I sob, sniffling between words. “He... just jumped into the fireplace... and burned up.”
I look up at Miss Delaney, who, for just a moment, smirks before putting on a sympathetic face.
“It ain't funny,” I cry. “Why are you laughin'? Don't laugh!”
“Oh, Murray,” Miss Delaney approaches, putting her hand on my arm. “You didn't know?”
“Didn't know what?” I swallow, trying to keep my sobs at bay.
“Murray... Ollie dies in every book.”
The tears stop, and I stare at her through blurry eyes.
“W-What?”
“The cat dies in every book.” Miss Delaney replies. “That's the theme of the series. It's supposed to teach you not to be so curious that you get yourself into trouble.”
“I... wait a—What?”
Miss Delaney smiles a bit and then giggles, taking a handkerchief from her pocket.
“You poor thing!” she says, dryin' my eyes. I take the cloth from her, rubbin' it all over my face, wet with wasted tears.
“It's the same cat in every book? But how does he come back to life?” I hold up my finger. “Wait, wait, I know this. Cats got nine lives, right? So, as long as he doesn't die a whole nine times, he's okay.”
“Not quite,” Miss Delaney chuckles. “I think the trick here is that Ollie isn't a real cat. He's just a book character.”
“Well, that ain't realistic.” I sigh. “I could write a better story than that.”
“Maybe,” says Miss Delaney. She raises an eyebrow. “Are you looking to be a writer now?”
I laugh, feelin' my eyes dry up. Look at me, cryin' over a book.
“Oh no, nothin' like that. I just wanna read a better story. Somethin' happier.”
“Well, the library's still open. Maybe I can help you find some books you'd like to read.”
I nod, thinkin' of the possibilities—plus maybe Miss Delaney has a better taste in books than the librarian.
“Yeah, that'd be nice. Just no sad endin's,” I say. “And no cats.”

laminate flooring for new residential build for bellway housing
We were commissioned with a new flooring project for Bellway Housing, a large-scale property company that builds quality new homes both nationally and in Essex, including Chelmsford, Rochford, Harlow, and Witham areas. For Bellway, impeccable attention to detail is at the forefront of every development, so our high standards of service and quality at Southend Flooring were a perfect fit.
Unlike many main high street flooring companies, we offer full-house flooring including staircases, bathrooms and kitchens, and all are fully covered with our warranty. So, our flooring specialists were delighted Tiling london to be tasked with covering this whole property from roof to ground!
Making a House a Home with Laminate Flooring
With a simple plain shell of a new build, we were responsible of giving this property a lot of character! So, while looking to give an authentic and warm feeling to the house, we wanted to also protect from the future wear and tear of furniture and – of course – cohabitants! Combining modern living with a traditional style, we chose a thick 12mm laminate flooring that combined with a deep and warm brown oak effect. At the same time as enriching the house with style and charm, we knew this laminate flooring would ensure a clean and sustainable finish for long-term longevity.
Wood Flooring vs Laminate Flooring
Why choose laminate flooring over hardwood flooring? As a natural product, real wood flooring can be hard to maintain, and can be costlier in the long-term. Unlike hardwood flooring – being made from real wood – laminate wood-style flooring is synthetic and made up from multiple layers. However, because of its premium quality, our laminate flooring still offers an authentic finish that gives the same effect of that of real wood flooring we desire. The end result is that you have a long-lasting high-gloss finish.
So, if you have a smaller budget, go for laminate flooring! It is easy to clean and maintain and will be fully waterproof, making it ideal for both bathrooms and utility rooms. In this project, we were able to cover the whole house, all wet-rooms covered, with this pristine wooden style.
Staircase Flooring & Heating Insulation
As a high-traffic area, we also had to ensure the staircase had a finish that was consistent with the rest of the property. Plus, with supplementary anti-slip stair nosings adding a safety ridge to each stair, these provided an even more unique style and flair to the home. Also, check out the matching brown shoes!
There’s no need for cold feet with Southend Flooring. We know solid floors can chill quite quickly, particularly those floors at ground level and wet areas, so we went even further to add an underlay of heat insulation, so to keep this house warm and insulated.

California Home Renovation
Hi, everyone! Can you feel summer knocking? I really hope the weather is beautiful where you are and you have some great (yet safe :)) plans for this long weekend.
Talking about summer and sunshine, this California home recently went through a big renovation by Three Salt Design Co. and it now feels like a real home to the new homeowners. Please read about the details shared by the designers:
“This amazing couple, and their two children, started this project with a cozy home that fit most of their needs, but didn’t feel quite as personalized as they wanted. A casual track home in blooming Irvine, that was warm and modest. We started with their master bathroom, and after creating a clean, contemporary, spa-like private space, we embarked on the rest of the house. Our goal was to create a space that truly reflected our clients – warm and modest, but also sophisticated and increasingly welcoming. When we came onto the project, our main focus was to create a space that reflected how they felt.” – Three Salt Design Co.
I hope this California home renovation inspires you in case you’re looking for some home renovation ideas or are simply looking for new decor ideas to refresh your home this summer. Have a good time!

RBL Spot Interview
Tumblr media
DIY skateparks have exploded in popularity over the last 10 years. I'm unsure whether it's a response to the growing number of people using skateparks, as people look for a more secluded spot to skate, or whether it's a natural extension of the creativity and freedom of skateboarding - but DIY parks have become a staple part of modern skateboarding. One spot which is thriving in this area is the RBL Spot, at an undisclosed location in Essex. The spot has been growing organically with an impressive level of professional finish and a great selection of obstacles to skate. I spoke to Will, who heads up the effort for the DIY spot, about how it came about, and how building there got him into the middle of a manhunt straight out of Police Interceptors.
Can you introduce yourself and tell me how long you've been skating for? My name is Will. I started skateboarding in summer of ‘01, aged about 10-11.
What inspired you to start building the RBL Spot? I've wanted to make a street style spot for a while. I tried 6 months before in an underpass which is lit up all night, but had some trouble with the graffiti writers who captured the space first. When I found this spot, I knew it was perfect. It was a BMX spot before, but as they built it out of wood, it all got burnt down by local chav kids - a constant plague to the spot.
What does RBL stand for? RBL means “rubble”. If you follow the hashtag #rubblespot back, you can see the earlier wooden BMX park and the concrete bits they had on the building before it was burnt and then knocked down. It used to be a good spot for graffiti and urban exploration, so the name was pretty set, I just gave it a slight rework.
What was on the site of the RBL Spot before you moved in to build the DIY park and before the BMX spot? It was a sport and social club, with tennis courts, football and bowls pitches. The red tile areas of the spot are where the shower rooms used to be. It had a large function room you could rent out for parties and events. Some of the skaters remember playing football there when they were really young. The club was subject to arson in 2013, and then I believe the building was demolished in 2015.
Tumblr media
Did you set out to build the spot because of a lack of decent skateparks nearby, or because you were after something a skatepark can't offer? We have some OK parks locally, but there's something special about DIY spots: a sort of no rules freedom. There are not many DIY's that are all street. We're 20 miles away from Urbside, who have the transition covered! Scooters are a real issue in my local park: It's very small, and I've grown quite tired of waiting for the council and their 2 million pound lottery grant funded upgrade. I've been trying to work with them and local police on this for the last 18 months.
Which famous spots did you take inspiration from when building obstacles at the spot? As far as the inspiration for the obstacles, layout etc - it's all from my love of plaza skating. Early 00s street was the best! Spots like Love Park, Carlsbad and Pier 7 are all hugely influential which is pretty obvious! Also 4 months before we started building, I visited Barcelona. Seeing the locals at Sants inspired me: their style, consistency and love for their spot.
Are there any other DIY parks out there that you use as an ideal benchmark for what you would like RBL to become? I really like the Bodila Project in Barcelona, the guys are super helpful and friendly too. Clemente DIY in Grand Rapids, Michigan is awesome too: kinda raw East Coast vibes. I love all the spots with a real sense of community, which is a big part of what I'm trying to create here.

You mentioned the chavs being a plague on the spot - Has anything super sketchy happened to you down at the spot whilst building or skating? Funny you should mention the chavs – I caught two of them just after the shed at the spot was kicked in for the 2nd time, and one of them ran away without his bike. I kept it hostage for a few hours until he went and got his Mum and Dad to scout it out for him.
By far the most memorable sketchy incident happened on a Sunday night in January. I'd been down there building on my own all day, and except for this crew of mosher kids who hang about near the spot, I'd seen no-one all day. I'm finishing a zoot, waiting to do the final pass on this triangle patch of concrete, when I hear a screech of a car from the top of the hill, and the loudest, clearest voice shouts out “freeze, put your hands up!”. I grab my phone, thinking 'Oh shit, this could be some good content!'. Next thing I know, there's loads of blue lights, sirens, and loud chatter from the road. More old bill turned up, and the whole thing was looking pretty heavy, so I started packing my shit up.
One of the cars started driving down real slow past me, lights on. They stopped at the bottom of the hill, and they got out with a fucking huge dog, with lights shining over towards me and across the spot. They slowly walked towards where the moshers throw bricks and shit.
At this point, I thought "Fuck this, I'm out - I'm not getting caught up in this and bringing attention to the spot". Touch wood: we have had no trouble from the police, local residents or businesses yet. So I grabbed my stuff and started waddling down the road between a load of police at the top and the parked, flashing police car at the bottom. When I say stuff, I mean a huge backpack, 2 tote bags, a tripod with a video light still on it, a shovel and a sledgehammer.
FUCKING HELL. I thought you were gonna say the worst thing you encountered was some kids vandalising the spot but that's much crazier than I expected. How I didn't get stopped I don't know, and I never got to the bottom of what happened!
The spot seems like a real community effort. How many other people have helped with the build? 4 of us started it, but I’ve had probably 20 other people help mix cement, or donate some money on the GoFund. Myself, Wes, Sam, Mark, Daryl (our buddy who came up from London for the build days, bless him), then also big shout outs to Rob and Matt who also helped on the big builds. It's awesome, as Mark and I skated Rob & Matt's DIY warehouse spot in Brentwood about 10 years ago, and now it's gone full circle.

How has the lockdown from COVID-19 affected the build? Dramatically. For starters, Wickes are not selling sand and cement as they're not essential items, so getting materials has been a mission. Fortunately a small family-run builders merchant got me sorted. With the local skateparks officially taped off and police monitoring them, we've had more skaters visit, in small groups luckily. Downside of this is the ground is getting more worn day by day! We've also had more non-skater visitors than ever, with the residents of the local houses nearby all coming over to take a look, and they've all been very supportive when I've spoken to them. I've got to know one guy who heads down there every morning to work out; it's great to see the space being used by everyone.
What have you got planned for the spot in the future? Currently in build is a new 7 stair with a low, long round handrail, and importantly, a BBQ. I've got plans to finish tidying the last bit of the edge and bank down to the lower panel. I'd like to add a long flatbar in the side section. And finally I'd like to extend and join the far end with a bank, making the whole layout a complete L shape, which is a lot of work! We really need to work on a lot of the holes in the floor too, and also dig away at the sides. The more you dig, the more room you have to skate but 95% of the digging has ended being by me! We really need to borrow a digger from the site opposite.
What's the sickest trick to go down at the spot so far? For me, seeing Neil Smith shred it up the other week. He did a nollie heelflip down the gap in a line and nollie heelflip fs crook on the little ledge. Not enough from our lot: we spent more time building than skating last summer, so hopefully this year we’ll enjoy skating it more. This has gotta be the worst one:

Other than Neil Smith and Thrasher's Hall Of Meat, have you had many high profile skaters visit the spot, or show interest in it? Nah. Smithy is pretty local. The future of the spot is pretty uncertain so we keep it pretty low key. If you know, you know. But obviously I’d love to see people come shred it up.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start a DIY spot? Pick the right spot. Never stop researching, stuff like mix designs, tools, techniques – all knowledge is good. Preparation is everything, it's better to take two days doing it really well than rushing it in 1 and having to fix it half a year later. Invite trustworthy people, and be prepared for everyone to slate what you've built. Everyone has ideas but not many will put the time, money, effort, blood, sweat and tears in!
Anyone you want to thank? @mr_radman for teaching me everything, all the support and encouragement to build the rubble spot, and the many hours he spends behind the camera capturing us all. @wjstringer for all the help and support from day 1, likewise @meerington_ for the many hours of help and all the sick sessions we've had skating recently. Shouts to @kit1 and @redbulluk for showing support for me last year and sending over a pallet of materials.
Big up everyone who's donated and helped out, and come along for a session. Let's hope we can have a few more soon!
