I just saw a job description with a fascinating set of technical red flags:
Milliseconds matter! Performance is key! Optimizing database access, algorithms, choosing the right data structures, in general working to design performant systems.
This is a C# job. Usually, if optimization actually really matters in a piece of software, it would be written in C or C++, or maybe Go, not C#. So this means that either they used the wrong language for their stack (and have no intent to switch) or they don't know what actually makes good software good and just put this on the job description to make it look sharp.
We write code from the ground up. We don’t use a lot of frameworks, packages, etc. Not a lot of macro-level stuff. Core software engineering chops is what we’re looking for.
Translation: "We like to waste a lot of time reinventing the wheel".
Our suite of systems is vast and varied. There are web services (REST, SOAP, hybrid), windows services, daemons, websites, libraries, command line tools, windows apps.
"Our services have no consistent interface, or guiding design principles, and getting them to interact with each other sensibly will be a nightmare."
We have plans to redesign several of the older systems, which will be a lot of fun.
"Our legacy codebase is so bad that we finally decided we couldn't fix it and instead are throwing it all out and starting over again."
There are a lot of system interfaces, both within our own suite as well as across teams in the organization. Plenty of opportunities for collaboration with a lot of smart people.
"We mentioned earlier that our services have no consistent interface, but have we also mentioned that there are a lot of them?"
We have immediate needs for refactoring and several enhancements to allow us to scale up to meet increased loads.
"The technical debt is so bad that even management thinks it's time to refactor."
We work with LOTS of data (many, many TB) & it comes fast! Scalability & heavy transactional loads, heavy reporting are common challenges for us. We solve a lot of interesting and tricky problems. Often not your typical collect/save/display that you get at other places. Not snapping into established frameworks. Working across tiers as required. Opportunities for more advanced coding.
Normally this wouldn't be a red flag, but when combined with the rest of the job description, it just really hammers home the point that it's going to be a huge pain in the ass to work with this codebase and a lot of "clever" hacky shit will probably be required.

we can do both, but we aren't particularly served by doing both. Certainly, if you view physical books as the only thing distinctly "library", that's also reductive - programming and education are independently part of library services - but often you end up engineering conflicting needs by trying to do everything in one space.
for instance: the library where I work has a children's play area. It is unreasonable to expect children or their parents to keep things 100% quiet and calm while also encouraging play. This is an absolute nightmare to navigate when you have a basically well-behaved kid shrieking with excitement at 3-5 min intervals and 6 people trying to do their taxes/compile spreadsheets/navagate the unemployment website on the computers 12 ft away. everyone is set up for conflict here.
in a perfect world where we had an unlimited budget and were able to redesign the building every time new services were added (and we received additional training and staff to adjust to the additional demands on effort and time), we could also infinitely expand community services, but several of the functions of a community center actively undercut core functions of a library environment, and a library environment is not ideally designed for some types of events and programs that a community center is designed and supplied for.
libraries as parts of community centers, adjacent to parks, and in public complexes that also house services and other public spaces all serve those conflicting needs better than trying to squeeze everything a community wants into one building and out of as few as 5 staff members per location in some cities.

The sudden pandemic shut down forcing discord or vidchat on us and my ml quitting without notice the rest of us refused for safety reasons and just didn't meet up that year. My brother becomes ml after pandemic and now discord is required and off-site shit is encouraged, yeah... Why did they think this wouldn't cause a backdoor to luring kids off-site?

The New York Public Library Beaux-Arts Building! After researching, I have even more appreciation for the library and these historic statues. When I first arrived in the city, one of the first things I did was get a NYPL card. It's so amazing to have such a vast group of libraries to explore and work at. These lions stand for Patience and Fortitude (also their well deserved names.) It's so interesting to look at these beautiful statues and think of all they have seen over the years!
Go behind this building to find a great park. In the winter, you can don your skates & slide around for a lark. In the summer, you can become a film buff just after dark. Twice a year the tents used to be where they might be staging a show, & maybe someday, they’ll be back, we just don’t know. What is the name of this park?

Mood Fabrics! We went here for our first class field trip and it is such a fantasy world for fabrics. By working in the garment district this semester, I have been able to explore many different fabric depots, trim shops, and other fashion production shops. Mood is obviously stand out with their huge selection, designer deadstock, and absolutely breathtaking intricate fabrics.

H&M. The unfortunate store that spearheaded fast fashion. Walking in here reeks of cheap dye and poorly made clothes barely worth their low price. I wish they could turn around their business and go back to their roots of providing what you need at a reasonable (not exploitative) price. Unfortunately, that seems to not be a change they will ever make.

Hennes & Mauritz! Originally a women's clothing store - Hennes means she in Swedish. They then combined with a fishing apparel store and added on Mauritz. Obviously they have evolved past fishing, but kept the iconic collaboration of the two.

M&J Trimming! I absolutely adore M&J. This trim shop always has exactly what I need with a friendly face to help. Their displays are put together so whimsically, I feel like I'm in a fashion candy shop. I am so sad they're closing down and crossing my fingers they pop-up somewhere else in the city.

Muji! Another store I could spend a lifetime in. They really understand ambiance for a store here at Muji. When I walked in, I immediately felt at ease. The music, simple yet perfect displays and products, and it even smells good! Everything comes together for a relaxing shopping experience in the heart of the city.

Hump Day Wednesday
I had a chat with Stella this morning about potential issues I've noticed on the site that aren't necessary accessibility issues. The first one is the difference between the drop-down Browse menu and the actual Browse page.

First off, the Subjects category doesn't appear in the drop-down menu. Stella said that this category should probably be removed, as it only links to one research output when clicking through the categories in it. It should either be in both places or neither. Since researchers have it as an option when depositing works but it's not required, and the Library doesn't manage or edit that field, it's probably best to remove it entirely.
Stella also noticed the inconsistency with naming, as the user can navigate to Faculties or Division via the drop-down menu or the Browse page; I think it should be altered on the drop-down menu to divisions, as there are some outputs that are outside of the Faculty division. There are some MMU Psychology Journal dissertations and Library Services articles that aren't part of the Faculties category.

This is inconsistent and confusing.
Another inconsistency I noticed after my chat with Stella is the order of the drop-down menu versus the Browse page. Collections and Datasets are switched. This seems like an easy fix to me.

I'm not really sure what's going on here, but it looks like there's just no text for the <a ref>; so there's a link (which doesn't even look like anything to me? I don't know what "=3A=3A=3A.html" is.), but no clickable text for the link. So it's a hidden link, or as WAVE calls it, a link with no text.

I told Stella about this, so it should be handed off the the suppliers to fix.
On the Advanced Search page, users have to tab through 15 elements before being able to begin a search. This seems like a lot for people that don't use their mouse.

UKC's KAR has more elements to tab through, but there is a "Skip to content" hidden button after two tabs (number 3).

The Skip function jumps the user to simple search link which is more reasonable. I'm not sure if I like the order of the search fields on this repository, but I'm sure the library team has a solid justification.
SPU's Digital Commons site has a hidden "Skip to main content" button that a user who tabs through the page will encounter first! I want to do some more research on that function, because I wonder if having it being hidden and the first option is always best? But I am still learning, so learning is what I need to do!

You can't even see the link on the page with WAVE's accessibility evaluation tool, but it brings the user right to the Help with Search link, number 4. This page is a lot more simple but potentially confusing to use for those that use screen-readers or can't view the entire screen. It may not be intuitive that for each category of a search has to be manually selected from the combobox and added via the green plus icon on the right. The alt value for the icon is "add row" which I think is quite helpful. I wonder what user testing SPU's library did for creating this site! I know they had a rebrand around 2017-2018, so I bet all of the webpages got updated and redesigned then to match the new style guide.
Just taking note of what other institutional repositories offer and how their site is set up...

The MMU Library website has a "Skip to main content" button which is the first link available on the page! Yay! So it should be something reasonable that e-space can adopt.
It's also important to note that the Skip buttons should say "Skip to content" or similar, as calling them "Skip navigation" or "Navigate to main content" could be confusing to users. Using plain basic language is best. Not only does having a "Skip to main content" button enable faster browsing for keyboard users, it helps them avoid frustration by making the site easier to use.
The link should be hidden from view but activated on the user's first keyboard tab. When the user hits enter, the first heading* of the main content of the page should be highlighted, or in this case, I think the first search bar should be activated or the first combobox for a search, whichever comes first.
After looking at random university webpages, I came across North Carolina State University. They have several Skip navigation buttons: you can "Skip to main navigation", "Skip to main content", "Skip to footer", and the final tab is "Accessibility feedback" and links to a form for feedback about accessibility. This is a handy option, and I wonder if it's something to consider for e-space. Perhaps having "Skip to main content" and "Skip to abstract" options on a webpage for a particular article.

On e-space, the user has to tab through 20 elements before a screen-reader will start reading the main text of the page. Stella and I also talked earlier about how the screen-reader goes through the title of an article twice, before and after the authors. Is that the best way to layout this page? Perhaps I will design a better layout... I'm having more ideas on how to stretch out this project and provide helpful feedback for the OR team at the library.
Imagine if you had to tab through 5-10+ buttons before getting to the main content on every new page you visited that was part of the same site. Now imagine you're a uni student doing a literature review--coming back to this same page when searching for internally produced research for hours would be mind-numbing, I can't even imagine.
There is the option to hold down the Tab button and skip through all of the navigation buttons, but I think Making Things Accessible.com has a good list of users that browse the web in ways I haven't considered before:

WAVE flags this header as an alert because it used the h5 heading, which is weird for being one of the top headings of the page as well as one of the most important headings. I know this isn't on e-space, but my screen-reader completely skips over this paragraph and goes right into the OR Conversations and the video captions. This page is not navigable in the same way for sighted users and visually impaired users and does not provide an equitable experience for all users.
