Cold Iron
Genre: dark urban fantasy Current word count: 48,747 Word count goal: 85,000
There are monsters lurking in the shadows. Things creep through the night. They are faster and stronger than you. They will try to trick you, hurt you, eat you.  Sometimes, baby monsters are left in cribs and precious little humans are stolen away. Changeling children are almost universally hated, reviled, and neglected by grieving parents. Most are too weak to survive in a world of smoke and iron and don’t live to adulthood. The ones that do have to be mean, sharp, and cold. Just like the monsters who abandoned them.  40 years ago, in 1916, a baby girl was stolen from a Chicago apartment under her parents’ and brothers’ noses and a thing was left in her place. That thing grew up and these days Shakatra lives with their adopted brother in subway tunnels and spends much of their time picking fights with territorial wildlings. They’re excellent with a knife, and because of their—forbidden—secret weapon, they can’t lose.  But when they turn 40, so will she. The innocent baby stuck beyond the veil, servant to the Fae. It’s only fair that Shakatra free her, give her the adult life she missed out on because they exist. That’s all they plan to do, find her and free her, and then they can return to their own marginal existence.  If only it were that simple...

And the only one with a chance of saving it is a commoner with royal blood and impressive skills. Ko’a tries to be ready, but when tragedy actually strikes there is little they can do besides go into hiding and hope grief doesn’t overwhelm them before they find a way to save everything they love.

Heartbroken siblings, amateur detectives, and a particularly lonely robot make it their mission to find out what is happening to the people no one should miss, a mission that will lead them to the secrets at the heart of their planet and into the stars beyond.

7 Days for Fae

Fae struggles to do a lot of things that are easy for other kids. She has a hard time talking, running, and reading facial expressions. She finds other things easy: reading, making up stories about fairies, flapping her hands to tell the world she’s happy. But in 5th grade it’s not good to be different, no matter how much she can’t help being disabled.  Now Fae’s aunt is moving in with her family and suddenly nothing feels right—all of the adults are quietly upset for reasons Fae doesn’t understand. Aunt Lana gets mad at her for things she can’t help and makes her feel like a baby. She just wants things to go back to the way they were.  Meanwhile at school, the new kid doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo that Fae is supposed to be invisible. He sits right down next to her and starts talking about spaceships. She isn’t sure what to do with this loud boy, but when he still wants to be her friend after a meltdown gets her suspended, it seems worth giving him a shot.  And now, as her life is falling apart, it looks like it might be up to Fae to discover if people really can change, and if change can sometimes make everyone’s life better.

Ilse lives on a farm with her parents and siblings. She works hard and tries her best. Everyone says she’s very pretty. But she’s also Wrong. And Different. Called changeling and fae touched, her head drifts into the clouds and she screams at rain droplets on her arm. She wants only to watch insects flutter in the sun and has no interest in farming and marriage. But she tries to be a good girl, so she does her best to pretend it doesn’t hurt, to look like she understands, to mimic everyone around her. She’s not very good at it, so honestly she doesn’t really mind when the fae come back for her and take her to another realm. The only issue is, she no longer knows how to stop pretending. Nele was taken away from her human parents as a baby and raised in the snowy realm of the fae, always knowing she was there because she was strong enough to survive and one day she would be sent back. She dreams of that day, of returning to somewhere she belongs and where things make sense. She doesn't cry like some of the others when the day finally arrives, ready to meet her human parents. But she wasn't expecting it to be just as hard and confusing, with everything she doesn't know. She wasn't expecting her family to miss the inhuman changeling she replaced. And she wasn't expecting to stand out for what the fae taught her. What does home mean when you’ve never belonged? The girls may have to turn to each other to find out—and to stop something terrible befalling both realms.

Which is why they are sent away from their homes and families to a dusty little planet on the edge of the system to protect something from attack that none of them have clearance to know about. That was because they’re good at their jobs…right?

By the time it’s over, she’s an adult with a child to raise alone and no dreams because there was never supposed to be a future. And now she’s just expected to live alongside her enemy like they didn’t gas her streets.
Aletha was a 30-year-old youth when the Witch Wars began. She had a future, grand dreams of higher education, maybe a job in politics among the elfin high council. Instead her entire graduating class was drafted to fight until their bodies were no longer useful. She was lucky, really, to marry a soldier who still cared for her—until he was killed in the final battle the morning of the treaty. Now the only way for her to fend for herself is to take her child into enemy lands and smile like she can’t still hear her parents’ screams among the bombs.
The werewolf diaspora was spread across every land, including the small human factory town where Violet was born. All of her memories of it include fear as distant wealthy werewolves threw their lot in with the elfin, followed by soldiers telling them this was no longer their home. But Violet did promise her mother on her deathbed to return if she was ever able, and it’s not like the elfin ever treated her like she belonged, so she’s going to keep her promise even if it means traveling with two babies and no husband.
Sellie was the rare vampire to live outside her homeland, but she was happy in her elfin community before the war. Many of her friends even stood by her as the vampiric committee officially sided with the humans, but it didn’t stop the laws from banning her after more than a century. And so she moved, and forged a new community. But now the war is over and her neighborhood is the home of the new “peace exchange” program, most of her friends are leaving to avoid contact with the elfin and werewolves, and Sellie is alone again.
Kellop never knew there was a war on; the mers were never much involved in others’ business. She got her first kiss to the beautiful flares of distant bombs. She grew up and married and had a family before the fighting reached her in violently dramatic fashion. One can only rebuild so many times before becoming a refugee in a war zone seems the safer option. Kellop’s family eventually reaches the point and reluctantly decides to raise their daughters in a foreign land of smog and concrete.

So my friends and I got together on Sunday to play some good old fashioned Warhammer.
What you may not know is I have a full Death Guard army, which, is where my fondness for the Loyalist 14th Legion project started.

It was a Poxwalker-less Death Guard list against Grey Knights. I won’t bore you with a turn by turn battle report nor pretend like I would be able to write one if I even wanted to but I will include the moment I rolled five 1s on a single wound roll. Not great.

I had a lot of fun and learned a lot as I often do when I get a chance to play. I like my list and while I won’t post the whole thing I will give a quick recap with photo reference.

I’m kind of over Blight Haulers, Plagueburst Crawlers do more in way fewer points. Additionally getting rid of almost 500 points makes more room for Terminators!
I have over 4000 points of Death Guard and yeah most of it’s not painted and more of it is still in boxes but it’s the army I started with and have been playing primarily since I started.
Nothing about the 14th today just expressing my enthusiasm to get to play again. Next time we will go over chipping and weathering. I had to redo my workspace because I had been painting on the dining table for a while but we’re up and running and the first squad of the legion is almost done!

Damn you automatic saves... DAMN YOU!!!
FFS... at some point this evening I lost my squid ship. I think I even know when - I was doing a round of respawned crashed starships to get more nanites and storage augmentations, and there was a point I accidentally started to swap ships instead of claiming one. I thought I chose the right option to cancel out of the swap, but NOPE. I apparently traded my fully augmented squid ship out for a junker worth a tiny fraction of its value.
And of course the new automatic saves screwed me over, because while I had done a manual save before starting my rounds, the manual save had been overwritten since, so I can’t even revert to that. Fucking hell.
*Bangs her head repeatedly against desk*
Feel this close to rage quitting NMS over this, but thankfully my screenshotting habits mean I know where to go to reacquire the ship, and I have all this cash and nanites and at least a few storage augments to throw at re-equipping it. Thankfully I also didn’t have much of anything in its inventory, beyond whatever was left from the last time I shot up asteroids, and some extra metal plating and glass so I could do some amount of construction before needing to summon my building material hauler.
Argh. Fuck. Fucking hell. Yes I am peeved. I would far rather be redoing the last couple hours of trading in crashed starships than this.

2020 Ford Explorer First Look: Rear Drive Reborn
We’ve seen many flavors of Ford Explorers over the years. It’s been a trucky, body-on-frame SUV and a stretched car-based crossover. It has roots that trace back to Volvo and Mazda, and it has also shown flashes of pure Ford DNA.
The common thread—no matter how it was engineered, what it looked like, or how it was critically received—has been its status as an American sweetheart. Ford has sold 7.7 million Explorers since that first one rolled off the line in 1990, and there are still 3.6 million of them on the road today.
The Explorer helped define the SUV segment and is one of the automaker’s best-known nameplates. It’s the centerpiece of a utility lineup that has grown around it. Above it is the Expedition, a massive body-on-frame SUV. Below it is a growing list of smaller crossovers, including, in descending size: the Edge, Escape, and EcoSport.
The centerpiece was in desperate need of its own redo. For 2020 the three-row family utility vehicle gets the complete overhaul while adding a hybrid and an ST performance model when it goes on sale in June.
Back to Its Rear-Drive Roots
The sixth-generation Explorer moves from a front-drive car platform to Ford’s long-awaited and all-new rear-drive architecture—the same one being used for the similarly sized Lincoln Aviator, both of which are assembled in Chicago. All-wheel drive is available from the base model up.
The clean sheet of paper makes many things possible. In addition to overall improvement gained by starting from scratch, the vehicle takes on a leaner and meaner look with a wider stance. The short overhang performs double duty: better for off-roading and more cabin room for on-roading.
Rear-drive handling comes standard, as does Ford’s 2.3-liter twin-turbo I-4 generating 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Pricing has not been announced, but the base model will only increase $400 over the outgoing model, executives promise, which would put it at $33,860.
The top-end Platinum trim gets the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, good for 365 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque.
First New Ford Hybrid in Ages
The 2020 model is 200 pounds lighter, which should also help with fuel economy, and there is now a hybrid option—the first new hybrid for the Ford brand in about six years—and the introduction of the ST model to add a little adrenaline. These augment the base, XLT, Limited, and high-end Platinum trims. More detail on the ST and Limited Hybrid is coming from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week.
There are promises of class-leading interior space—the wheelbase grew about 6 inches—and we anxiously await full specs. But having climbed inside, we can tell you that the old problem of feeling squished against the center console while needing longer arms to reach the door has been resolved with thinner doors and a redesigned center console. Humans can now sit comfortably in a cabin that stayed the same width.
Once inside you can’t miss the new customizable 12.3-inch digital cluster that changes the graphics with each of the six drive modes—seven if you have all-wheel drive and the advanced terrain management system, which adds a snow/sand mode. Nor can you miss the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen or optional 10.1-inch capacitive screen with the updated Sync 3 infotainment interface. Explorer loyalists will be surprised to see the new rotary gearshift and addition of an electronic parking brake.
Just Let Me Squeeze Past You
No third row is easy to access, but the Explorer enhances the experience with a wider step to get in and a single button to push to make the second row fold and slide forward to crawl to the back. Power third-row seats also fold flat. All three rows have adjustable climate control, and all rear seats have child seat anchor points. Up front is a heated and cooled eight-way adjustable seat with massage settings. The steering wheel is also heated.
Acoustic glass and active noise cancellation help occupants converse, and there’s a dual-pane sunroof on top trims for those who want to look up and tune out.
The cargo area has a lip to keep items from rolling out and dividers to chop up the space. The carpeted cargo cover is reversible. Flip to the rubber side when stashing muddy gear.
Towing capacity with the V-6 increases to 5,600 pounds from a maximum of 5,000 in the 2018 model. With the I-4 and towing package it can still tow up to 5,300 pounds, which is quite a hike from 3,000 pounds with the similar current model.
History Lesson
The run started with the 1991 Explorer, a truck-based family hauler that went on to rule the segment for two decades. At its peak in 2000, Ford sold 445,000 Explorers, and its popularity was so consuming that Ford ignored other vehicles in the lineup such as the Taurus, which was relegated to rental car status.
Much like the Ranger it shared a chassis with, the two- and four-door Explorer was a hot commodity in the ’90s, but its Mazda counterpart, the Navajo, was not.
For the second generation, the 1995 Explorer was still based on the Ranger, but efforts were made to give it a better ride and more refined look with rounder lines. The Navajo faded away, but Mercury started making the Mountaineer in 1997.
The Explorer’s third generation (2002–2005 model years) was a new take on a body-on-frame SUV with a new independent rear suspension and third-row seats. The two-door was dropped. Lincoln got the short-lived Aviator.
Falling from Grace
Sales fell to a low of 52,000 in 2009 when higher gasoline prices torpedoed the SUV segment and consumers gravitated to the new breed of car-based crossovers from Japan. That was also the year the auto industry faltered. GM and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy, and Ford had just enough cash on hand to avoid filing papers, as well. The fourth-generation Explorer (2006–2010 model years) struggled to survive the famine despite improvements to make it hardier.
Joining the Competition
Ford reinvented the Explorer in 2010 as a crossover, following the successful path its Japanese competitors had taken. Sales rose again. The 2011 model used the same car platform as the Ford Taurus, which traced its roots to the Volvo architecture for the S80. The lighter Explorer had a 3.5-liter V-6 and optional 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine—no more V-8s. The ground shift resulted in about a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency.
Change came again for the 2016 model, including the addition of the top-end Platinum trim with a 365-hp, 350-lb-ft 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 while a new engine was introduced for the rest of the lineup: the 270-hp, 300-lb-ft 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine used in the Mustang.
But it has been too long since the Explorer received a whole scale do-over, which might explain a 4.3 percent drop in U.S. sales in 2018 to 227,732.
Tell Me What You Want
Engineers and marketing execs spent a lot of time in customer clinics, visiting families at home, and peppering Explorer owners at the gas station with questions about what they like and dislike about their Explorer to help Ford build a better mousetrap this time around and not squander the opportunities the new architecture affords.
For 2020 there’s a full array of driver-assist technologies to steer, stop, speed up, park, reverse safely, switch to high-beams, and even set the adaptive speed control to obey changing speed limits—or consistently stay a set speed above the limit. A new side wind mitigation system detects the wind pushing against the vehicle and applies a set of brakes to counteract. This 1963 Chevy C10 Proves Second Time’s a Charm
Becoming involved in the build of your very first classic truck can be the ultimate learning experience. From the time spent researching your favorite make and model to when you find it and swap cash for a title, it’s just the beginning. For Todd Zientek of Shorewood, Illinois, the first chance he had to channel his inner hot rodder started with a 1963 Chevy C10 pickup once he graduated from college. With all the right intentions of building a neat restomod-styled truck, he delivered the prize to his parents’ garage and started the teardown with neighborhood friend Evan Vandarakis who brought plenty of mechanical knowledge to the mix.
Having never taken on anything like this before every chapter was part of the learning curve. The pair worked tirelessly to first refresh the chassis and then moved onto bodywork with Todd’s mom even lending a hand with wet sanding. This clearly showed that there was plenty of family support on tap. The truck made it to the mocked-up roller stage but was then sidetracked when life’s priorities began to shift. It was eventually sold off as he started a career and family, however he never forgot about his passion to build a hopped-up hauler. One thing remained a constant in his life, regular visits to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet to watch plenty of nitro-fueled drag racing on a regular basis over the last 20 years since the track opened. Coupled with attending demolition derbies and local car shows with his dad growing up, it was only a matter of time till he got involved in the build of another truck.
One of the coolest things is that he has been able to share these experiences with his daughter, Madigan, who enjoys racing even more than he does. The pair regularly spends plenty of time both at the racetrack and at car shows studying the latest styles and comparing notes. Having seen a number of wicked rides to roll out of Nichols Paint & Fabrication in Watseka, he made an appointment to meet with shop owner Justin Nichols to discuss a pickup he had been building in the back of his mind since he was in his teens. On the visit he spied a 1963 Chevy C10 in the back lot of the shop that had recently arrived from Oklahoma. It was heavily patina’d and in need of a full redo, making it a perfect base for the project. The pair went over a number of key elements for the build, sharing many of the same ideas of what would make the truck bitchin. Todd told us, “I’ve always been drawn to the 1960-1966 Chevy C10 pickups with their classic styling and subtle curves, complemented by just the right amount of stainless trim across the cab and bed.” Sounds perfect to us! It wasn’t long before a deal was made with Todd and Madigan’s ideas starting to come to life right before their eyes.
The team at Nichols tore the truck down to bare bones and blasted the frame clean to get started. The spine was then shortened 2 inches out back and treated to modified crossmembers. Out back a Chevy 12-bolt rear was packed with 3.90:1 gears turning 31-spline axles and suspended in place by a combination of a custom triangulated four-link by Nichols and ’bags from Slam Specialties to set the stance. Wanting to make the truck handle like it was on rails, a Fatman Fabrication IFS was deftly matched to Wilwood Engineering forged 2-inch drop spindles and ’bags from Slam Specialties to bury the nose in the street. After looking at all the color options Todd and Madigan decided on Matrix black gloss with accents in black satin. Justin loaded his spray gun and laid down a 10-foot-deep coating to bring the truck to life.
Focusing on the interior, Madigan had studied plenty of C10s she had seen over the years at a number of events. She wanted to instill a warm feeling inside the cab by introducing a warm color combination, starting with the factory dash being painted a two-tone tan and crème. It was then filled with custom dials from Dakota Digital to monitor the vitals while a custom CON2R steering wheel mounted to a polished ididit tilt column navigates the road through a rack-and-pinion.
