Only one date is ever mentioned in-game, that being 2021. Considering that the Virtual Singer Fan Festa seems to be a stand-in for Magical Mirai 2021, we can assume that the Scramble Fan FESTA! event takes place in September 2021 (the real-life MM2021 was delayed to November due to covid-19, but the pandemic doesn't exist in-universe and MM Tokyo usually takes place at the beginning of September). There are Leo/need Daily Life social media posts that show them attending Magical Mirai, and do state the year of the event, but these can be considered promotional material for the event itself rather than canon material, especially since the characters address in-game that only one year has passed since the start of the story (despite the fact they have celebrated new year's day 4 times now. Timeloop things).
Based on this date, we can actually place exactly when every main character was born. The cutoff date for Japanese schools is April 1st, making Ena the oldest main character, being a 3rd year with a birthday of April 30th, followed by Tsukasa on May 17th, so on so forth all the way down to Kohane, a 2nd year with a birthday of March 2nd.
Considering when Scramble Fan FESTA is set, Ena, who was a 2nd year at the time, would be 17 years old. That would place her date of birth as April 30th, 2004. Additionally, while Kohane, a first year at the time, should be 15 during the event, the game considers her to be 16 due to using a set age for every grade bracket. Regardless, the event setting places her date of birth as March 2nd, 2006.
Based on this, we can conclude that:
Ena, Tsukasa, Rui, and Shizuku were born in 2004
Mafuyu, Kanade, Airi, Minori, Saki, Toya, Nene, An, Ichika, Mizuki, Emu, Haruka, Honami, and Akito were born in 2005
Shiho and Kohane were born in 2006
This also means that Ena, Tsukasa and Rui are all older than the MEIKO software (released November 5th 2004), and everyone except Kohane is older than the KAITO software (released February 17th 2006). Every main character is older than Miku, the Kagamines, and Luka based on this information.
Using the information around set ages*, we can also work out rough estimates for when the side characters were born. For example, Arata, who was 19 during the first 3 years of the game, is 3 years older than the members of VBS who were all considered to be 16. Since the members of VBS were born in the April 2005 - April 2006 school year range, Arata was likely born in the 2002-2003 school year range.
* based on how characters like Youta and Miu, who are said to be the same age as Leo/need, were both confirmed to be 16 years old before the 3rd anniversary age-up. Also Haruka's age is confirmed as 16 at a point in time when she shouldn't be 16. Timeloop things.
Based on this, the oldest living side character, Kounosuke, who was 55 pre-3rd anniversary and 39 years older than Emu, was probably born between April 1966 and April 1st 1967. On the younger side of things, Hanano, who was 14 pre-3rd anni, was likely born between April of 2007 and 2008. I've put the rest of the estimated side character DOBs under the cut.
assumed age as of 3rd anniversary in brackets (literally just pre-age-up age + 1)
Rakunosuke Otori - April 2nd 1922 ~ April 1st 1923 (98 (at time of death. would be 100 if still alive))

Mai - 2006~2007 (16)
Hanano Yoshizaki - 2007~2008 (15)
Ambiguous:
These ages were given in the 3rd fanbook, but there is not really any way to tell if these are the characters' ages at introduction or ages after the 3rd anniversary age-up. Here are both possible DOB ranges.
Additional notes (mod is rambling atp):
Rakunosuke died when he was 98 years old. In the WxS main story, Emu says that he died a year ago. Assuming Emu was 15 at the time, they have an age gap of around 83 years. The year of birth listed here was based on that assumption.
We know that Kanade's mother died aged 30, but we do not know when she died. She is still alive in flashbacks set roughly 10 years prior to the events of game.
We do not have confirmed ages for Nagi, Reki, Sakaki, Ohara, MMJ's landlady, Mafuyu's father, Daigo, Hiiragi, or the members of ReLight, yet
Rui suggests that Reki is the same age as him in A Story Where You Are The Star. However since it's more vague than Asahi, I left it out. However, Asahi was since confirmed as 18 when he was compared to Reki as being similar age, it is likely that Reki is also around 18 years old.
Nagi's age is left blank in the fanbook due to it not being revealed that she was dead at the time of publication. She is younger than Taiga, but we don't know by how much, but nonetheless she was likely born in the early 1980s. It is unlikely we will ever know her exact age.
Ohara is stated to be in his mid-30s, placing his birth year as somewhere in the 1980s, likely around 1986-1989. Sakaki is an old college friend of Ohara's, so he is likely a similar age.
Daigo went to college with Shousuke, so he is likely a similar age. We can assume he was born at some point in the early-mid 90s.
No NPCs are given exact birthdays

Song: Cafard (aka Blues for You)
Composer: Philippe Parès (aka Gabriel Parès)
Record Label: A Sam Fox Production SF1012
Released: 1966
Location: Gomorrah casino, Mysterious broadcast
Once again Mr. Sam Fox (or Synchro Fox) brings us another mystery, the same label that brought you “Stars and Teardrops” aka “Joe Cool”.
Also as a side note though “Cafard” literally translates to “cockroach”, it’s likely that the title is referring to the French idiomatic expression “avoir le cafard” or “to have the blues” which dovetails neatly into the alternate title, “Blues for You”.
Although this instrumental is not broadcast on the main three radio stations in New Vegas, it is heard in the Gomorrah casino as the lobby music. Later, it can be heard on the Mysterious Broadcast inviting you to the Big MT.
Unfortunately, unlike Fallout 3′s end credits, Fallout: New Vegas’ end credits feature the licensed music from the standard record labels, but omits all of the radio tunes from APM including the instrumentals save for a brief mention of  “Additional Music Courtesy of APM Music”.
As is the case with library music, finding artist and recording information is extremely difficult as these songs were never meant to be sold to the public, instead being exclusively used for the film and TV industry. What follows is an attempt to extricate this information.
Note: Library music is typically identified by composer or emotion. Very little can be confirmed about the musicians who performed on the recording.
So let us focus on what is known, starting with the full track list:
Side A
1. Global Hop (G. Wright Briggs) 2. Ephesus - Theme (Robert R. Way) 3. Ephesus - Bridge #1 (Robert R. Way) 4. Ephesus - Bridge #2 (Robert R. Way) 5. Ephesus - Bridge #3 (Robert R. Way) 6. Ephesus - Bridge #4 (Robert R. Way) 7. Ephesus - Bridge #5 (Robert R. Way) 8. Ephesus - Curtain (Robert R. Way) 9. Caudia - Theme (Robert R. Way) 10. Pegasus - Theme (long) (Robert R. Way) 11. Pegasus - Theme (short) (Robert R. Way) 12. Pegasus - Bridge #1 (Robert R. Way) 13. Pegasus - Bridge #2 (Robert R. Way) 14. Balua (Roger Roger) 15. Song of the Trade Winds (Roger Roger) 16. Bits and Pieces (Openings, Bridges, Endings) (Roger Roger) 17. Love Me (Roger Roger) 18. Memories of Barbara (Roger Roger) 19. Tropics (Roger Roger)
Side B
1. Tour for Swingers (Loren Wilfong) 2. Whooping and Hollering (Loren Wilfong) 3. Slim (Cecil Leuter) 4. Reveil (Nino Nardini) 5. Cafard (Ph. Pares) 6. Lunatic (Soulful) Trumpet (Jim Wakerfield) 7. Polly (J.S.  Zamecnik) 8. Heart Beats (Walter E. Miles)     Winter Tales (Czibulka - Lamont)     The Man on the Flying Trapeze (Honky Tonk Piano Medley) (arr. Victor Lamont) 9. Monte Carlo Polka (Ph. Pares) 10. Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-Der-Ei (March 1900) (Ph. Pares)
About the composer
Tumblr media
Left: Gabriel Parès (père) - postcard and record label, ca. 1910s Right: Philippe Parès (fils) - EP album covers, ca. 1950s
As expected with library music, this track has been miscredited. The CD reissue lists the composer as Gabriel Parès while the record credits Philippe Parès. To confuse the issue further, they are father and son.
Gabriel Parès lived from 1860-1934, slightly before when this track was pressed in 1966. Gabriel was primarily known for his marching band music as captain of the Garde Républicaine. His son, Philippe Parès was known for his work with collaborator George Van Parys in musical theater and jazz which better aligns with the 1966 date of this track.
Tumblr media
Both father and son were dedicated to music theory ranging from the Parès scales to the books Qui est l'auteur de la Marseillaise? and Histoire du droit de reproduction mécanique.
The 1978 book 33 tours en arrière et notes en vrac (Before 33 RPM and Loose Notes), serves as Philippe’s memoir regarding the music of his father, pre-war,  Occupation, and post-war music from 1923-1962. Philippe would also pass the following year in 1979.
About the recording
As noted above, the original title “Cafard” is likely linked to the French idiom “avoir le cafard” which ties into the CD reissue’s title of “Blues for You”.
As for the miscredited composer, aside from the father/son confusion, Philippe’s full name is “Philippe Gabriel Hippolyte Emmanuel Parès”. The middle name of “Gabriel” probably didn’t help identification matters much.
Tumblr media
Similar to Stars and Teardrops/Joe Cool, “Cafard” aka “Blues for You” was reissued on the same Carlin Archives CD Jazzy Vibes, CAS 019, previously under APM, now under Warner/Chappell.
Tumblr media
Along with the miscrediting of Philippe Parès as Gabriel Parès, track number 20 picked up the two similar descriptions between the Carlin Archives Series and the CPM issues.
“Slow relaxed blues features saxophone electric guitar”
“Slow relaxed blues features electric guitar vibes saxophone trumpet”
There aren’t any entries in BMI, but ASCAP has the song registered under “Cafard” composed by Philippe Parès, not under “Blues for You”.
Tumblr media
As for dating the track, again the process is similar to “Stars and Teardrops”.
The small R in the dead wax stands for the RCA Pressing plant in Rockaway, New Jersey which ceased operations in 1973.
The etched matrix number is TR4M. However, RCA adopted a custom of switching the 2nd and 3rd characters of the matrix numbers every 10,000 numbers every year. So the matrix number should actually read “T4RM”.
In short the matrix numbers stand for:
T = 1966
4 = Re-recorded from client’s furnished tapes
R = 12" - 33⅓ RPM
M = Mono (Fine)
Alas, the record label still provides no clues for the performers on the tracks. What remains are the composers’ credits.
Listen to “Stars and Teardrops” aka “Joe Cool” also on Sam Fox here.

Pianist Hiromi Uehara has released a new live concert performance of her Trio Project, Live at Marciac.
Backed by bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips, the DVD captures the trio’s live performance in Marciac, France in July, 2011. Six of Hiromi’s own compositions are featured during the performance, as well as her version of “Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8, Pathetique”, which she included in her most recent release, Voice – an album also featuring Jackson. A bonus feature entitled “Five Days, Five Countries” rounds out the DVD’s contents.
Hiromi and Jackson had recorded together in the past, but this was the first pairing with Phillips.

“I had such a great time recording with them, and we went on the road together and that was even more fun,” Hiromi says. “As soon as we started playing live shows, we grew up as a band. It was the biggest fun I’ve ever had in my life musically. That’s why I wanted to do another record. I couldn’t let it go. I wanted to do it again.”

Charles Ray Hatcher (1929-1984)
Tumblr media
Charles Ray Hatcher was an American serial killer who confessed to the murders of 16 people over a 14 year period. He was born in Mound City, Missouri, on July 16, 1929, the youngest son of Jesse and Lula Hatcher. Jessue Hatcher was an ex-convict & a violently abusive alcoholic. Hatcher was bullied as a child, and would bully his classmates in turn. In early 1935, Hatcher and his older brothers were flying a kite made with copper wire they had found in an old Model T Ford. Arthur, the oldest brother, was just about to hand the kite to Charles when it hit a high-voltage power line and electrocuted him - he was pronounced dead at the scene. Not long after this incident, Jesse left the family and divorced Lula, who remarried several times. In 1945, Hatcher moved with his mother and her 3rd husband to St. Joseph.
In 1947 Charles Hatcher was convicted of auto theft in St. Joseph after stealing a logging truck from his employers at the Iowa-Missouri Walnut Company. For this, he received a 2 year suspended sentence. The following year he was convicted for the same crime for stealing a 1937 Buick & was sentenced to 2 years in the Missouri State Penitentiary. On June 8, 1949, he was released after serving just over a year - he was back in prison within a few months, this time for forging a $10 check at a Maryville gas station. On March 18, 1951, Hatcher escaped from prison & attempted a burglary but was captured and received 2 extra years in prison. He was released from prison on July 14, 1954, and promptly stole a 1951 Ford in Orrick - he was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Prior to sentencing, Hatcher tried to escape from the Ray County Jail in Richmond & received an extra 2 years. On March 18, 1959, Hatcher was released from prison for the 6th time. 3 months later Hatcher attempted to abduct 16-year-old Steven Pellham, a paper boy, threatening him with a butcher knife. Pellham reported the incident & Hatcher was arrested when the police pulled him over whilst he was driving a stolen vehicle. He was subsequently sentenced to 5 years in the Missouri State Penitentiary for the attempted kidnapping and auto theft under the Habitual Criminal Act. Whilst waiting to be transported to prison, Hatcher unsuccessfully tried to break out of the Buchanan County Jail. When he arrived at the Missouri State Penitentiary, he claimed to be the most notorious criminal in northwest Missouri since Jesse James. On July 2, 1961, fellow inmate Jerry Tharrington was found raped & stabbed to death on the prison’s kitchen loading bay. Hatcher was the only kitchen crew member who was missing at the time of the murder. He was sent to solitary confinement but there was not enough evidence to convict him in court. Whilst in solitary, Hatcher wrote a note saying that he needed psychiatric treatment, but the prison psychologist believed this was just a scheme to get out of solitary and possibly to be released early. Treatment was therefore refused, and Hatcher was returned to the general population. His sentence, however, was reduced to 3/4 the original time, and he was released on August 24, 1963.
Hatcher confessed to abducting 12-year-old William Freeman in Antioch, California on August 27, 1969, claiming that he told the boy to come with him, took him to a creek, & strangled him. 2 days later, Gilbert Martinez, 6, was reported missing in San Francisco. The 6-year-old who was playing with Martinez stated that he walked away with a man who offered him ice cream. Martinez was found by a dog walker, who saved him while he was being beaten and sexually assaulted. Police arrived on the scene & arrested the perpetrator, who gave his name as Albert Ralph Price, but carried ID with the name Hobert Prater. Martinez survived his ordeal, and FBI records identified the assailant as Charles R. Hatcher. Still using the name of Albert Price, Hatcher was charged with assault with attempt to commit sodomy & kidnapping, and was ordered to complete competency evaluations to determine whether he was fit to stand trial. A complete psych evaluation was ordered when he was unresponsive during the preliminary evaluations. At this time, Hatcher claimed he was hearing voices, and faked delusions & suicide attempts in an effort to avoid going to prison. In December 1970 Hatcher was sent between the courts and the hospital many times - one psychiatrist diagnosed him as having a passive-aggressive personality with paraphilia & paedophilia. Hospital staff believed that Hatcher was lying about/exaggerating the symptoms of his mental disorders. He was examined by 2 psychiatrists in January 1971; he was declared insane by the 1st, who recommended vigorous treatment in a secure hospital & the 2nd psychiatrist declared him incompetent to stand trial & sent him back to the hospital. On May 24, 1971, Hatcher was sent to trial. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity & was sent to a different hospital for more evaluations, where he was determined to be unfit to stand trial. On June 2, Hatcher escaped from the hospital & was caught a week later in Colusa, California, where he was arrested for suspected auto theft under the name Richard Lee Grady. Hatcher was taken back to the California State Hospital for a mental evaluation. In April 1972 hospital staff declared his treatment unsuccessful and determined that he was a danger to other patients. As a result, he was sent to the prison state hospital in Vacaville. In August of 1972, Hatcher was transferred to San Quentin State Prison to stand trial, 3 years after the crime. He was ordered to undergo 2 final examinations - 1 declared him competent to stand trial & the other believed he was sane at the time of the crime. In December of that year Hatcher was tried & convicted of the abduction & molestation of Martinez. He was committed to the California State Hospital as a “mentally disordered sexual offender”.
On March 28, 1973, guards found Hatcher hiding in a cooler near the hospital’s main yard with 2 sheets stuffed into his pants, admitting to an escape attempt. He was sent back to court for sentencing after doctors decided he was still a threat to society. In April Hatcher was sentenced to 1 year to life and was sent to a medium-security prison in Vacaville. In May of the same year a psychologist declared Hatcher to be a “manipulative institutionalised sociopath” - the following month he attempted suicide by cutting his wrists after it was recommended that he be transferred to a maximum security prison. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia & remained at Vacaville. In August 1975, at Hatcher’s parole review, the guards reported good behaviour. In June 1976, the California Parole Board found that Hatcher had improved during his time in prison & set a parole date of December 25, 1978. Due to the passing of a bill giving inmates credit for time spent in jails and mental hospitals, Hatcher received a new parole date of January 1977, and was released to a halfway house in San Francisco on May 20, 1977. On September 4, 1978, Hatcher, under the name Richard Clark, was arrested in Omaha, Nebraska, for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. He was sent to the Douglas County Mental Hospital & was released in January 1979. On May 3, 1979, Hatcher was arrested for assault & attempted murder after trying to stab 7-year-old Thomas Morton. He was subsequently sent to Norfolk Regional Center after the charges were dropped. In May 1980, Hatcher was released from this facility but was sent back 2 months later following another assault - he escaped in September. On October 9, 1980, Hatcher, as Richard Clark, was arrested in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the attempted assault & sodomy of a 17-year-old boy. He was then sent to another mental health facility and released 21 days later. On January 13, 1981, Hatcher was again arrested under the name Richard Clark in Des Moines, Iowa, after a knife fight. He spent time in several mental health facilities before being released to a Davenport Salvation Army shelter in April.
On May 26, 1978, Eric Christgen, 4, disappeared from St. Joseph, Missouri - his body was found along the Missouri River, having been sexually abused. He died of suffocation. The police questioned over 100 potential suspects, including “every known pervert in town”, to no avail. One was 25-year-old Melvin Reynolds, a man of below-average intelligence who had been a sexual abuse victim as a child, & who had homosexual experiences as an adolescent. Although Reynolds was agitated by the investigation, he fully cooperated through several interrogations including 2 polygraph tests and 1 interrogation under hypnosis. In December 1978, Reynolds was questioned under amobarbital (believed to be a truth serum) and made a vague comment that intensified suspicion against him. 2 months later the police brought Reynolds in for another found of interrogation - 14 hours of questions, threats, & promises. He finally snapped, saying: “I’ll say so if you want me to.” In the following weeks, Reynolds embellished his confession with details that were fed to him, either deliberately or otherwise. This was enough to convince the prosecutor to charge Reynolds & a jury convicted him of 2nd degree murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. 4 years later, Reynolds was released when Charles Hatcher confessed to 3 murdered to an FBI agent - including that of Eric Christgen. On July 29, 1982, Michelle Steele, 11, was reported missing in St. Joseph. The following day her uncle found her naked, brutalised body on a bank of the Missouri River - she had been severely beaten before being strangled to death. Hatcher was arrested the next day, trying to check in to the St. Joseph State Hospital. Whilst awaiting trial, he confessed to 15 other child murders dating back from 1969. The 1st victim, 12-year-old Willam Freeman, had disappeared from Antioch, California, in August 1969, a day before Hatcher was charged with child molestation in nearby San Francisco. In a different case, Hatcher drew a map leading searcher to the remains of James Churchill on the grounds of the Rock Island Army Arsenal near Davenport, Iowa. Hulu New Releases: December 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s OK.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec. 6. The real appeal this month, however, is undoubtedly in the older library titles. All three installments of The Lord of the Rings trilogy arrive on Dec. 1, as do Eyes Wide Shut, 50 First Dates, and several Bond movies. With those alone, there are plenty of options for cinematic background noise through the holiday season.

MOTORHEAD 1979 9LP box Set 2019
Motörhead 1979 Box Set - 1979 was MOTÖRHEAD year - the year of 'Overkill' and 'Bomber'. MOTÖRHEAD, the loudest band in the world, with the power and force of a hundred pneumatic drills they destroyed the nation over and again and no-one, repeat no-one, remained unaffected by them - everyone was torn limb from limb. The albums 'Overkill' and 'Bomber' were ten times more powerful than their first album 'Motörhead', which was a killer in itself. The production was in the capable and experienced hands of one Jimmy Miller, whose previous successes had been with the likes of the Rolling Stones. He brought out the very best in the boys and the total effect was lethal. 'Overkill' and 'Bomber' are real skull crackers, brain-damaging to the nth degree and with the hit singles 'Overkill', 'No Class' and 'Bomber' you can doubtless guess the destroying effect of the whole affair. That's Motörhead, straight, basic, down to earth rock and roll, with absolutely no holds barred.

A HISTORY OF THE US GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT
The American Gay Rights Movement: A Timeline This timeline provides information about the gay rights movement in the United States from 1924 to the present: including the Stonewall riots; the contributions of Harvey Milk; the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy; the first civil unions; the legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York; and more. 1924 The Society for Human Rights in Chicago becomes the country's earliest known gay rights organization. 1948 Alfred Kinsey publishes Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, revealing to the public that homosexuality is far more widespread than was commonly believed. 1951 The Mattachine Society, the first national gay rights organization, is formed by Harry Hay, considered by many to be the founder of the gay rights movement. 1955 The first lesbian-rights organization in the United States, the Daughters of Bilitis, was established in San Francisco in 1955. 1956 The Daughters of Bilitis, a pioneering national lesbian organization, is founded. 1958 Joe Cino, an Italian-American theater producer, opens Caffe Cino. Caffe Cino is credited with starting the Off-Off-Broadway theater movement. Six years after Caffe Cino opens, it hosts the first gay plays, The Madness of Lady Bright, by Lanford Wilson, and The Haunted Host, by Robert Patrick. 1962 Illinois becomes the first state in the U.S. to decriminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults in private. 1966 The world's first the transgender organization, the National Transsexual Counseling Unit, was established in San Francisco. 1969 The Stonewall riots transform the gay rights movement from one limited to a small number of activists into a widespread protest for equal rights and acceptance. Patrons of a gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn, fight back during a police raid on June 27, sparking three days of riots. 1973 The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders. Harvey Milk runs for city supervisor in San Francisco. He runs on a socially liberal platform and opposes government involvement in personal sexual matters. Milk comes in 10th out of 32 candidates, earning 16,900 votes, winning the Castro District and other liberal neighborhoods. He receives a lot of media attention for his passionate speeches, brave political stance, and media skills. 1976 San Francisco Mayor George Moscone appoints Harvey Milk to the Board of Permit Appeals, making Milk the first openly gay city commissioner in the United States. Milk decides to run for the California State Assembly and Moscone is forced to fire him from the Board of Permit Appeals after just five weeks. Milk loses the State Assembly race by fewer than 4,000 votes. Believing the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club will never support him politically, Milk co-founds the San Francisco Gay Democratic Club after his election loss. 1977 Activists in Miami, Florida pass a civil rights ordinance making sexual orientation discrimination illegal in Dade County. Save Our Children, a campaign by a Christian fundamentalist group and headed by singer Anita Bryant, is launched in response to the ordinance. In the largest special election of any in Dade County history, 70% vote to overturn the ordinance. It is a crushing defeat for gay activists. 1978 On January 8, Harvey Milk makes national news when he is sworn in as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Running against 16 other candidates, he wins the election by 30 percent. Milk begins his term by sponsoring a civil rights bill that outlaws sexual orientation discrimination. Only one supervisor votes against it and Mayor Moscone signs it into law. John Briggs drops out of the California governor's race, but receives support for Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative, a proposal to fire any teacher or school employee who publicly supports gay rights. Harvey Milk campaigns against the bill and attends every event hosted by Briggs. In the summer, attendance greatly increases at Gay Pride marches in San Francisco and Los Angeles, partly in response to Briggs. President Jimmy Carter, former Governor Ronald Reagan, and Governor Jerry Brown speak out against the proposition. On November 7, voters reject the proposition by more than a million votes. On November 27, Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone are assassinated by Dan White, another San Francisco city supervisor, who had recently resigned and wanted his job back, but was being passed over because he wasn't the best fit for the liberal leaning Board of Supervisors and the ethnic diversity in White's district. San Francisco pays tribute to Harvey Milk by naming several locations after him, included Harvey Milk Plaza at the intersection of Market and Castro streets. The San Francisco Gay Democratic Club changes its name to the Harvey Milk Memorial Gay Democratic Club. 1979 About 75,000 people participated in the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Washington, D.C., in October. It was the largest political gathering in support of LGBT rights to date. 1980 At the 1980 Democratic National Convention held at New York City's Madison Square Garden, Democrats took a stance supporting gay rights, adding the following to their plank: "All groups must be protected from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, language, age, sex or sexual orientation." 1982 Wisconsin becomes the first state to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. 1984 The city of Berkeley, California, becomes the first city to offer its employees domestic-partnership benefits. 1993 The “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy is instituted for the U.S. military, permitting gays to serve in the military but banning homosexual activity. President Clinton's original intention to revoke the prohibition against gays in the military was met with stiff opposition; this compromise, which has led to the discharge of thousands of men and women in the armed forces, was the result. On April 25, an estimated 800,000 to one million people participate in the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. Several events such as art and history exhibits, public service outings and workshops are held throughout Washington, DC leading up the event. Jesse Jackson, RuPaul, Martina Navratilova, and Eartha Kitt are among the speakers and performers at a rally after the march. The march is a response to “Don't Ask Don't Tell”, Amendment 2 in Colorado, as well as rising hate crimes and ongoing discrimination against the LGBT community. 1996 In Romer v. Evans, the Supreme Court strikes down Colorado's Amendment 2, which denied gays and lesbians protections against discrimination, calling them “special rights.” According to Justice Anthony Kennedy, “We find nothing special in the protections Amendment 2 withholds. These protections . . . constitute ordinary civil life in a free society.” 2000 Vermont becomes the first state in the country to legally recognize civil unions between gay or lesbian couples. The law states that these “couples would be entitled to the same benefits, privileges, and responsibilities as spouses.” It stops short of referring to same-sex unions as marriage, which the state defines as heterosexual. 2003 The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Lawrence v. Texas that sodomy laws in the U.S. are unconstitutional. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “Liberty presumes an autonomy of self that includes freedom of thought, belief, expression, and certain intimate conduct.” In November, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that barring gays and lesbians from marrying violates the state constitution. The Massachusetts Chief Justice concluded that to “deny the protections, benefits, and obligations conferred by civil marriage” to gay couples was unconstitutional because it denied “the dignity and equality of all individuals” and made them “second-class citizens.” Strong opposition followed the ruling. 2004 On May 17, same-sex marriages become legal in Massachusetts. 2005 Civil unions become legal in Connecticut in October. 2006 Civil unions become legal in New Jersey in December. 2007 In November, the House of Representatives approves a bill ensuring equal rights in the workplace for gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals. 2008 In February, a New York State appeals court unanimously votes that valid same-sex marriages performed in other states must be recognized by employers in New York, granting same-sex couples the same rights as other couples. In February, the state of Oregon passes a law that allows same-sex couples to register as domestic partners allowing them some spousal rights of married couples. On May 15, the California Supreme Court rules that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. By November 3rd, more than 18,000 same-sex couples have married. On November 4, California voters approved a ban on same-sex marriage called Proposition 8. The attorney general of California, Jerry Brown, asked the state's Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of Proposition 8. The ban throws into question the validity of the more than 18,000 marriages already performed, but Attorney General Brown reiterated in a news release that he believed the same-sex marriages performed in California before November 4 should remain valid, and the California Supreme Court, which upheld the ban in May 2009, agreed, allowing those couples married under the old law to remain that way. November 4, voters in California, Arizona, and Florida approved the passage of measures that ban same-sex marriage. Arkansas passed a measure intended to bar gay men and lesbians from adopting children. On October 10, the Supreme Court of Connecticut rules that same-sex couples have the right to marry. This makes Connecticut the second state, after Massachusetts, to legalize civil marriage for same-sex couples. The court rules that the state cannot deny gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry under Connecticut's constitution, and that the state's civil union law does not provide same-sex couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples. On November 12, same-sex marriages begin to be officially performed in Connecticut. 2009 On April 3, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously rejects the state law banning same-sex marriage. Twenty-one days later, county recorders are required to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. On April 7, the Vermont Legislature votes to override Gov. Jim Douglas's veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry, legalizing same-sex marriage. It is the first state to legalize gay marriage through the legislature; the courts of the other states in which the marriage is legal—Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa—gave approval. On May 6, the governor of Maine legalized same-sex marriage in that state in Maine; however, citizens voted to overturn that law when they went to the polls in November, and Maine became the 31st state to ban the practice. On June 3, New Hampshire governor John Lynch signs legislation allowing same-sex marriage. The law stipulates that religious organizations and their employees will not be required to participate in the ceremonies. New Hampshire is the sixth state in the nation to allow same-sex marriage. On June 17, President Obama signs a referendum allowing the same-sex partners of federal employees to receive benefits. They will not be allowed full health coverage, however. This is Obama's first major initiative in his campaign promise to improve gay rights. On August 12, President Obama posthumously awards Harvey Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. 2010 March 3, Congress approves a law signed in December 2009 that legalizes same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia. August 4, Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker rules that Proposition 8, the 2008 referendum that banned same-sex marriage in California, violates the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. "Proposition 8 singles out gays and lesbians and legitimates their unequal treatment," Vaughn writes. "Proposition 8 perpetuates the stereotype that gays and lesbians are incapable of forming long-term loving relationships and that gays and lesbians are not good parents." December 18, the U.S. Senate votes 65 to 31 in favor of repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the Clinton-era military policy that forbids openly gay men and women from serving in the military. Eight Republicans side with the Democrats to strike down the ban. The ban will not be lifted officially until President Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, agree that the military is ready to enact the change and that it won't affect military readiness. On Dec. 18, President Obama officially repeals the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy. 2011 June 24, New York passes a law to allow same-sex marriage. New York is now the largest state that allows gay and lesbian couples to marry. The vote comes on the eve of the city's annual Gay Pride Parade and gives new momentum to the national gay-rights movement. The marriage bill is approved with a 33 to 29 vote. Cheering supporters greet Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he arrives on the Senate floor to sign the measure at 11:55pm, just moments after the vote. After making same-sex marriage one of his top priorities, Cuomo emerges as a true champion of gay rights. 2012 February 7, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California rules 2–1 that Proposition 8, the 2008 referendum that banned same-sex marriage in state, is unconstitutional because it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. In the ruling, the court says, the law "operates with no apparent purpose but to impose on gays and lesbians, through the public law, a majority's private disapproval of them and their relationships." February 13, Washington becomes the seventh state to legalize gay marriage. March 1, Maryland passes legislation to legalize gay marriage, becoming the eighth state to do so. May 9, President Barack Obama endorses same-sex marriage. "It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," he said. He makes the statement days after Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan both came out in support of gay marriage. Nov. 6, Tammy Baldwin, a seven-term Democratic congresswoman from Wisconsin, prevails over former governor Tommy Thompson in the race for U.S. Senate and becomes the first openly gay politician elected to the Senate. Also on Election Day, gay marriage is approved in a popular vote for the first time. Maine and Maryland vote in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. In addition, voters in Minnesota reject a measure to ban same-sex marriage. 2013 Feb. 27, in a policy shift for party members, several Republicans back a legal brief asking the Supreme Court to rule that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. More than 100 Republicans are listed on the brief, including former New Hampshire Congressman Charles Bass and Beth Myers. Myers was a key adviser to Mitt Romney during his 2012 presidential campaign. The brief is filed as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to consider overturning Proposition 8, the California initiative banning same-sex marriage, as well as overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law passed during Bill Clinton's presidency, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. March 26, the Supreme Court begins two days of historical debate over gay marriage. During the debate, the Supreme Court consider overturning Proposition 8, the California initiative banning same-sex marriage, and the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law passed during Bill Clinton's presidency, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court's decision will be announced in June 2013. April 29, Jason Collins of the NBA's Washington Wizards announces in an essay in Sports Illustrated that he is gay. "I'm a 34-year-old N.B.A. center. I'm black and I'm gay," he writes. "I've reached that enviable state in life in which I can do pretty much what I want. And what I want is to continue to play basketball. I still love the game, and I still have something to offer. My coaches and teammates recognize that. At the same time, I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful." Collins is the first active athlete in the NBA, NFL, NHL, or MLB to make the announcement. May 2, after same-sex marriage legislation passes in both houses of Rhode Island's legislature, Governor Lincoln Chafee signs it into law. The new law, legalizing same-sex marriage, goes into effect on August 1, 2013. May 7, Governor Jack Markell signs the Civil Marriage Equality and Religious Freedom act, legalizing same-sex marriage for the state of Delaware. The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2013. May 13, in Minnesota, the State Senate votes 37 to 30 in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. The vote comes a week after it passes in the House. Governor Mark Dayton, a supporter of same-sex marriage, says he will sign the bill the following afternoon. Gay couples will be able to marry in Minnesota in August 2013. June 26, the Supreme Court rules that the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. In a 5 to 4 vote, the court rules that DOMA violates the rights of gays and lesbians. The court also rules that the law interferes with the states' rights to define marriage. It is the first case ever on the issue of gay marriage for the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. votes against striking it down as does Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. However, conservative-leaning Justice Anthony M. Kennedy votes with his liberal colleagues to overturn DOMA. July 17, Queen Elizabeth II approves a same-sex marriage bill for England and Wales. Her approval comes a day after it passes in Parliament. While the queen's approval is simply a formality, her quick response clears the way for the first gay marriages to happen as soon as 2014 in England and Wales. The bill allows same-sex couples to marry in both religious and civil ceremonies. It also allows couples currently in a civil partnership to convert it into a marriage. Scotland is currently considering its own new legislation on same-sex marriage. Aug. 1, Minnesota and Rhode Island begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples this month. Oct. 21, in an unanimous vote, the New Jersey Supreme Court rejects Gov. Chris Christie's request to delay the implementation date of same-sex weddings. Same-sex couples in New Jersey begin to marry. Just hours later, Christie drops his appeal to legalize same-sex marriages. Therefore, New Jersey becomes the 14th state to recognize same-sex marriages. To see a current list of all the states that have legalized same-sex marriage, go here. Nov. 5, Illinois becomes the 15th state to recognize same-sex marriages when the House of Representatives approves the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, which passed the state Senate in February 2013. Governor Pat Quinn, a strong supporter of same-sex marriage, will sign it into law. The new law will be implemented on June 1, 2014. Nov. 12, Hawaii becomes the 16th state to recognize same-sex marriages when the Senate passes a gay marriage bill, which had already passed in the House. Governor Neil Abercrombie, a vocal supporter of gay marriage, says he will sign the bill. Beginning December 2, gay couples who are residents of Hawaii as well as tourists can marry in the state. Hawaii is already a very popular state for destination weddings. State Senator J. Kalani English says, "This is nothing more than the expansion of aloha in Hawaii." To see a current list of all the states that have legalized same-sex marriage, go here. 2014 Jan. 6, The United States Supreme Court blocks any further same-sex marriages in Utah while state officials appeal the decision made by Judge Shelby in late December 2013. The block creates legal limbo for the 1,300 same-sex couples who have received marriage licenses since Judge Shelby's ruling. Jan. 10, The Obama administration announces that the federal government will recognize the marriages of the 1,300 same-sex couples in Utah even though the state government has currently decided not to do so. In a video announcement on the Justice Department website, Attorney General Eric Holder says, "I am confirming today that, for purposes of federal law, these marriages will be recognized as lawful and considered eligible for all relevant federal benefits on the same terms as other same-sex marriages. These families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds." With federal approval, same-sex couples will be able to receive spousal benefits, like health insurance for federal employees and filing joint federal income tax returns. May 19, Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Oregon when a U.S. federal district judge rules that the state's 2004 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage violates the Equal Protection clause in the U.S. Constitution. May 20, A judge strikes down the same-sex marriage ban in Pennsylvania, making the state the 18th to legalize gay marriage. The judge rules that Pennsylvania's 1996 ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The state is the last in the Northeast to legalize same-sex marriage. Before now, the state did not even recognize domestic partnerships or civil unions. Oct. 6, The U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear appeals of rulings in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin that allowed same-sex marriage. The move paves the way for same-sex marriages in the five states. In fact, Virginia announced that unions would begin that day. Nov. 12, The U.S. Supreme Court denies a request to block same-sex marriage in Kansas. Nov. 19, A federal judge strikes down Montana's ban that same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Nov. 20, The U.S. Supreme Court denies a request to block same-sex marriage in South Carolina. The ruling means South Carolina becomes the 35th U.S. state where same-sex marriage is legal. 2015 June 26, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled, 5–4, in Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry and that states cannot say that marriage is reserved for heterosexual couples. "Under the Constitution, same-sex couples seek in marriage the same legal treatment as opposite-sex couples, and it would disparage their choices and diminish their personhood to deny them this right," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. July 27, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) ended its ban on gay adult leaders. The new policy was approved by the BSA National Executive Board by a 45-12 vote. The new policy did still allow church-sponsored Scout groups to ban gay adults for religious reasons. 2016 In the year since the June 26, 2015 landmark Supreme Court decision Obergefell v. Hodges that extended the right for same-sex couples to marry nationwide, the LGBT community has been fighting against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. On May 13, 2016, President Obama weighed in on the "toilet wars"—legislation being hashed out in some states about which bathrooms transgender people have the right to use—with the guidelines: students may use bathrooms according to their self-identified gender. Go to International Policies on Same-Sex Marriage for an updated list on which countries have legalized gay marriage.
