Legal Services In India
Legal services in India encompass a broad spectrum of activities aimed at providing legal assistance, advice, and representation to individuals, businesses, and government entities across various legal matters. As a diverse and complex country with a rich legal tradition, India's legal services sector plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law, ensuring access to justice, and facilitating economic and social development.
At the core of India's legal services are law firms, which range from small boutique practices to large full-service firms with national and international reach. These firms employ a diverse array of legal professionals, including lawyers, advocates, legal advisors, and paralegals, who specialize in different areas of law such as corporate, commercial, civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law.
Corporate and commercial law form a significant part of legal services in India, given the country's rapidly growing economy and expanding business landscape. Law firms specializing in this area provide a wide range of services to businesses, including legal advice on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory compliance, intellectual property rights, taxation, contract drafting and negotiation, and dispute resolution.
Litigation is another cornerstone of legal practice in India, with a vast network of courts and tribunals spread across the country. Law firms and individual practitioners represent clients in civil, criminal, and commercial disputes, advocating for their interests in courts at various levels, including the Supreme Court of India, High Courts, district courts, and specialized tribunals.
In addition to corporate and commercial matters, legal services in India also encompass a wide range of other areas, including family law, property disputes, labor and employment law, environmental law, human rights, and public interest litigation. These services cater to the diverse needs of individuals, families, communities, and marginalized groups, ensuring access to justice and legal remedies for all sections of society.
Moreover, legal services in India are increasingly focusing on providing specialized and niche services to meet the evolving needs of clients. This includes areas such as intellectual property law, technology law, cyber law, competition law, arbitration, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Specialized boutique firms and individual practitioners excel in these areas, offering expert advice and representation to clients seeking resolution of complex legal issues.
The legal services sector in India is also witnessing significant advancements in technology, with the adoption of digital tools and platforms to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and transparency. From online legal research databases to e-filing systems, technology is revolutionizing the way legal services are delivered and accessed in the country. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual hearings, remote consultations, and digital documentation, further transforming the legal landscape.
However, the legal services sector in India faces several challenges, including issues related to access to justice, legal aid, judicial backlog, regulatory reforms, and ethical standards. There is a need for greater investment in legal infrastructure, education, and training to address these challenges and strengthen the legal profession.
In conclusion, legal services in India encompass a wide range of activities aimed at providing legal assistance, advice, and representation across various legal matters. From corporate law firms to individual practitioners, the sector plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law, promoting justice, and fostering socio-economic development in the country.

The Indian legal system does not accommodate a formal position of paralegals. This opens a huge opportunity for global businesses to outsource their legal processes to India by tapping into enormously available and economically viable paralegal experts. Check out our blog to learn how the rise of remote paralegals is unlocking global compliance.

(@toasthaste reblogging on my bookblog just for the sake of tidiness)
That's incredibly flattering, thank you!
Okay, just roughly off the top of my head (and trying to avoid urban fantasy and to offer some variety):
The Burning Kingdoms trilogy (starts with The Jasmine Throne) by Tasha Suri - political epic fantasy with a medieval-India inspired setting. Fun evocative worldbuilding, decent intrigue and politiking, compelling relationship between the two leads (princess exiled to starve to death in a remote palace after failing to honorably burn herself alive, one of the last novices initiated into the ruling cult of a conquered kingdom before 90% of her entire childhood was massacred in a purge). Last book falls off a bit, but the trilogy does work as a whole.
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez (standalone) - class melodramatic epic fantasy about two young lovers, the cruel emperor's three monstrous sons, and how everything falls apart in the three day procession from the emperor's palace to the grand fleet built to carry him across the sea to immortality. Absolutely incredibly beautifully written, has an immense amount of fun playing with framing devices and layers of narrative. This may be absolutely intolerable as an audiobook - depends a lot on the performances.
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty - swashbuckling tale of pirates, warlocks and demons set in a low-fantasy late medieval Indian ocean. Very very very obviously inspired by Sinbad the Sailor, though set a few centuries after his adventures - about a famed and infamous pirate-adventurer lured out of retirement and reassembling her crew to save the daughter of a crewman whose death she was responsible for. One of those books that is at least 30% a chance for the author to show off all the research she did.
Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone - set in a world where sufficiently advanced contract law is indistinguishable from magic, with a hero whose introduced as she's kicked out of *Hogwarts from 10,000 feet. She eventually gets a job as a paralegal helping investigating the bankruptcy (death) of a god of fire whose power and priesthood was the heart and soul of a whole city-state. Very fun and twisty, exceptionally concerned with being as clever as it can possibly be.
hello tumblr user st-just do you have any fantasy novel recommendations for me?
Assuming you're up to date on the series your cats are named from? Honestly aside from them and all those Robin Hobb books I've never read I'm not sure I have a great sense of what kind of fantasy fiction you really like?
But, hmm, okay. First thing that comes to mind is She Who Became The Sun/He Who Drowned the World - a duology of very very low fantasy novels about the fall of the Yuan Dynasty where the 'mandate of heaven' is a real observable thing certain people can manifest. Also one where Zhu Yuanzhang (founder of the Ming Dynasty) died as a starving peasant child and his sister decides to assume his identity and capital-d Destiny. Lots of Gender, weird hard-to-catagorize kinds of queerness in an intensely patriarchal society, deeply unpleasant people in profoundly toxic relationships with each other.

Importance of Virtual Legal Assistant (VLA) or Virtual Secretarial Services

What is a Virtual Legal Assistant?
A virtual legal assistant is a skilled professional who works for you or your law firm from anywhere in the world.
Why should you hire them?
Monotonous and tedious work such as managing paperwork, responding to phone calls and messages, drafting documents etc., can leave law professionals with little or no time to focus and grow their own firm or company.
VLA can take care of these tasks while you can focus on the core tasks of growing your business and gaining more clients.
Advantages of Hiring a Virtual Legal Assistant
Let’s look at the key advantages of hiring a VLA:
1. Cost Saving: Outsourcing tasks to a virtual legal assistant means you save costs such as physical office space, overhead expenses like insurance or other benefits, office equipment, travel cost etc. Also, paying top-notch virtual legal assistant is usually less expensive than paying a full-time employee.
2. Productive: Law firms need to perform a variety of thorough and laborious tasks, such as document management, data entry, follow-ups with various providers, etc. These tasks are certain and they can be easily managed virtually. Involving the in-house team for these tasks would take away their valuable time and they can invest that time in more important tasks such as speaking to potential new clients, understanding cases, hearing witnesses, investigation, attending mediations or trials, etc. Hiring an experienced virtual legal assistant who can work on tasks without much assistance would help the in-house team and can settle cases sooner.
3. Avoid Training: Training is time-consuming and expensive. With VLA, law firms can have the same accountability and security that with an in-house staff.
Hiring a VLA from Legacore Solutions is a perfect solution for your firm.
Legacore is an advantage. Legacore delivers law firms and attorney the five principal and primary factors.
Cost Savings: We guarantee more than 40% savings in direct costs.
The Bridge: We act as a bridge between your old and new staff as we continue to have the knowledge of the case and the process.
SPOC: A SPOC (single point of contact) saves your time, improves your control on operations and increases trust and dependability.
Opportunity to Scale Up Sustainably: The ability to access a large trained and talented pool of resources means you can do more. You can expand faster than an in-house team, leaving you free to focus on core business initiatives that drive growth.
Round-the-clock uptime: Consumers today demand 24/7 service.
At Legacore, each member is trained for 12 weeks on the US legal system. That India has Common Legal System like the United States just makes it easier for us to train and deploy the right resources. Our comprehensive data security and confidentiality measures ensure that we respect the car and caution that is needed to handle the data. The top reasons why you should choose an Indian legal outsourcing partner
If we go back to the time when outsourcing of the legal services started, India was the chosen one for distinct reasons, which were more convenient than another. The earliest dates of outsourcing legal work to India had happened in the mid-nineties. The reason India was at an advantaged position was because of 1) low costs, 2) the law education in India is in English, 3) brilliant infrastructures, 4) highly skilled staff, especially in the IT field, and 4) time-zone advantage. India’s workforce also used this opportunity well and made sure to solidify their position in this industry. The legal process outsourcing companies gave quality their priority over other things, which further strengthened the confidence of the attorneys, law departments and law firms about India LPOs.

The Workforce
Initially, when the work started coming in, the focus was on low-end tasks and it was easily adopted by the law graduates. In the early 2000, when India started creating more and more National Law Schools, LPOs gave an alternate opportunity to the law graduates who were not keen in practicing law. The quality of the students in the National Law Schools were at par with the students of Oxford or Harvard Universities. The law entrances were difficult to crack so the students were the best from day one. The students at the top law universities or the National Law Schools were given exposure at the international levels, so they became well trained on various foreign laws.
Some students even got the opportunity to go abroad and finish their final years as part of the student exchange program. The students were encouraged by the Universities to participate in International Moot Courts and Seminars where they interacted with the best of the legal luminaries in the world. The LPOs tapped these students by offering them good salaries and growth opportunities which were not available for the beginners in the regular traditional jobs in the field of law. Further, these LPOs roped in the experienced lawyers to help them in doing the high-end legal work like legal research and contract management.
Personal Injury work came in as one the first services to the Indian LPOS. The Medico Legal Experts were hired as employees or as consultants to write Demand Letters or to do the File Reviews and Summaries. In fact, the deposition summaries were also done by the practicing lawyers. This gave an edge to the Indian LPOs because quality was impeccable. Subsequently, Contract Management entered the sector and Contract lawyers were hired as quality checkers for even the secretarial work. The mid 2000s saw US & Canadian Immigration law firms and e-discovery companies heavily counting on Indian LPOS for support at all stages because of the sheer volume of the work.
Technology
India had always been ahead of many countries when it came to technology and process automation. LPOs heavily relied on technology expertise as the tools and platforms had to be accessible to Indian workforce, so that they could work with the attorneys and paralegal seamlessly. India had no dearth of IT staff and every LPO built an IT department. The investment helped the LPOs grow and was cost-effective for both sides. This department blended well with the in-house staff that supported the law firms and attorneys with everyday task. Due to this robust support, the law firms started taking help from the LPOs in creating tools that were quite advanced for that time. The tools and apps created then are in use to date.
This has only grown stronger over the years. Today, the capabilities are such that Indian LPOs create patented tools that is used by US, UK, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian law firms. For some law firms, the Indian LPOs do 75% of the work remotely from here. The e-discovery tools and the CLM tools made in India are now the most reliable tools and Indian workforce have learnt them well too. Similarly, for personal injury practice area the work done on the specific tools have been improvised by the Medico Legal Experts here and it has increased the productivity of everyone.
Data Security
Data Security concerns were a huge challenge in the beginning especially, when the work was getting done remotely from another country. The challenge was huge even for the LPOs. Early on cloud services were used by the law firms but slowly with advancement in technology more robust ways were adopted to handle security issues. The LPOs became ISO certified, the VPN services were adopted where work was only done on the law firms’ computers remotely and security keys are used by law firms too. This has addressed the security concerns to a larger extent.
TLB Advantage
TLB has one of the most experienced LPO teams in the entire southeast Asia. They have IT and Finance Leaders, contract lawyers, immigration experts, estate law lawyers, forensic analysts, personal injury lawyers, market research analysts, digital marketing experts, business development managers and global client relationship managers. TLB has a separate division for every area of service having the knowledge of the best tools platforms and technologies used in this industry. The teams are cross trained so that support can be given 24/7 to every department in a law firm or a corporate law firm. E.g., the Medico Legal Experts have hands-on experience in Contract law also. TLB has secured work environment and works on Microsoft cloud services to ensure data protection. The processes are strong enough to provide end-to-end support to the law firms.

How to Become a Virtual Legal Assistant in India
A virtual Legal assistant is a self-employed person who has the job of helping with specific office tasks that can be completed online through a third person. The tasks done by a virtual assistant can be incredibly specific or broad. A virtual legal assistant is a concept that is becoming very common now and more and more law firms are delegating work to such assistants. Virtual legal assistants can be inexpensive and effective at completing administrative tasks, while services of more specialised ones can be used for more complex tasks. Hiring a virtual assistant can help one reduce personal workload as they can do tasks that are not so important but need to be done or are time-consuming. Often legal virtual assistants bring their own expertise to the table that enhances the overall quality of work done by a lawyer. Read Also: Living Life as a Lawyer
How to Become a Virtual Legal Assistant in India
A virtual assistant is a freelancer who provides online support to professional by working remotely. The virtual assistant’s job is to work from home only; there is no need to go into their client’s offices physically. If you want to become a virtual assistant, you need to know the basics about how to become one and what skills are needed. Virtual legal assistants nowadays are in the form of virtual paralegals and legal secretaries that are the perfect solution to the varying needs of a law firm or in-house legal team. The lawyers work jointly with the assistants on single one time projects or permanent projects as a continuing outsourced legal support solution to achieve the desired outcome. Being a successful virtual legal assistant in India is not something that comes quick and easy for anybody. A person needs to possess requisite legal skills before he can be of any help to any legal professional. There is no separate professional course required to become a virtual legal assistant. However, you must be familiar with the job you are applying for and proper knowledge about the work to be done. There is massive Business Process Outsourcing infrastructure gaining popularity in India, and most Indian legal virtual assistants work in these types of offices. Work as a freelancer on your own terms and conditions or join an established company that provides you with clients When you decide to start as a virtual legal assistant, there are two options- freelancing work for law firms or sign up as an assistant with an organisation that provides assistance on a temporary basis. If you go prefer freelancing, it is a good option as you’ll be on your own and so you will have full control over your client. You will get to decide working hours and your fees, and you can expand your work in whichever way you want. But if you take the other option, you will register as an assistant under an already established virtual assistant company. There are many companies that provide such services to other organisations. The advantage of joining a company is that you do not need to make any efforts to seek work; they do the marketing for you and assign clients that suit your skills. This option lacks the risk factor, which will be there in freelancing as finding the right clients require a separate marketing process. But then working with a company also has the disadvantage as you will have to work under somebody on their terms and conditions. Skills needed to become a Virtual Legal Assistant in India: To become a successful legal virtual assistant, you must possess these qualities: Detail-oriented and quick learners-To become successful; you should be able to learn to do something you’ve never done before. An assistant is expected to embrace the working style of the lawyer he is working with and pick up new skills to perform the job assigned. Good communication skills- Working virtually requires good communication skills. A lot of information is to be discussed, which can be in a verbal or non- verbal form before a task is completed. If you are not a good communicator, you will not be able to understand the way in which work is to be done and fail to make a connection with your client leading to dissatisfaction to both of you. Adapting- Every person has a unique style of working. While working as a virtual legal assistant, you will have to from time to time, switch your style of working to suit your client. You might even be required to work at odd timings if the client is in a different time zone. Therefore, adapting is very important to succeed. You must actively clarify all the doubts and be ready to adapt to your client’s behaviour. Passion: Success is not guaranteed in any field, and the same is for starting as a virtual assistant. You must be a self-motivated individual and not give up easily because of mere difficulties. You should just focus on your work and be passionate about completing it on time. True passion will add value to your work and will get you more clients. Honesty: The client completely depends on the assistant for the work that has been assigned. Therefore, the virtual legal assistant needs to be reliable and must always present himself honestly, i.e. tell clearly of his capabilities and accomplishments. The client should be updated on the actual status of the task so that he knows of issues if any. The assistant should always ensure to resolve issues at the earliest to prevent any inconvenience to the client. Also, no tasks should be undertaken, of which you are not capable of. It is better to say no than to do anything just for the sake of doing it. Virtual assistants should work smarter, not harder so that things are done quickly and more efficiently. The clients expect timely delivery, so assistants should try to deliver on time, set clear expectations for communication from the start and stay consistent on that. An assistant is more effective if he can help the clients find ways to save money in their business and help in making more money. Read Also: 5 KPIs to Make a Law Firm More Profitable Conclusion Managing the workload in the legal profession is no easy task with loads of cases and handling various clients who demand a high level of productivity and low costs at the same time. Getting the right level of administrative support is the best option to keep clients happy and satisfied. Therefore, becoming a virtual legal assistant is a great option to make use of your skills with a variety of clients. A person is not restricted in any way while working virtually and therefore has more opportunities to explore. Read the full article

Discovery Genie
Founded: 6/1/2017.
Headquarters: Denver, Colo.
Elevator pitch: Discovery Genie solves the document production problem facing 750,000+ lawyers and paralegals litigating cases involving 35,000 pages or less: reviewing, producing, organizing and indexing emails, attachments and efiles. The Genie’s lawyer-designed system automates conversion to PDF, Bates numbering, privilege-log generation, and more, saving 75-90% of the time, cost and tedium of using Acrobat — but without the overkill costs and complexity of an e-discovery system. No IT department needed.
How we’re unique: We make document production inexpensive, fast and simple for the 90% of lawyers and paralegals who litigate small- to mid-sized cases (35,000 pages of production or less). Manual document production is slow, soul-crushing, and wasteful of professional talent – but e-discovery platforms, designed for big law, are cost prohibitive and unworkable for the vast majority of lawsuits. Discovery Genie serves the huge overlooked legal market with powerful but simple and affordable document production tools.
Demo video (if any): https://vimeo.com/294695282.
Pricing: On-demand, per document pricing. Custom pricing is available for large jobs, such as one case that involved 380,000 pages of production. (We have partnered with the DC Bar and the Colorado Bar Association to provide discounted services as a member benefit.)
Outside funding: No outside funding.

We’re building an adaptive learning platform that designs personalized development paths, allows lawyers and professional development teams to track their progress, and pushes incremental, custom content that encourages consistent learning and professional growth.
How we’re unique: Our adaptive learning platform replaces the outdated, impersonal training and development models that rarely fit the busy schedules of distracted learners, and do not meet lawyers in the online mediums where they’re spending most of their time.
Our model also uses real-time data and various accountability methods to provide on-demand learning and help lawyers stay on track with their professional development, rather than leave it up to ad-hoc mentoring and goal setting.
Demo video (if any): None.
Pricing: We have a subscription-based pricing model.
Outside funding: Less than $1M in outside funding.
ECFX
Founded: 1/28/2019.
Headquarters: Los Angeles, Calif.
Elevator pitch: ECFX is a one-stop, enterprise-class solution for electronic court filing (ECF). ECF is a time-consuming and complex process that varies from court to court. ECFX obtains huge efficiencies and cost savings for the firm, eliminates the risk of missed receipts, and reduces filing rejections.
How we’re unique: ECFX distinguishes itself over competing solutions by offering a firmwide, enterprise class solution for all of a law firm’s jurisdictions. Firms today must cobble together products from multiple vendors, and that patchwork of products may still be incomplete. ECFX focuses on automating work that falls into the gaps between the other products in the market and provides a consistent user experience across multiple jurisdictions.
Demo video (if any): https://docsend.com/view/ru3gbs6.
Pricing: We charge per transaction for each receipt or filing, with price per transaction depending usage volumes. To obtain discounts, firms can pre-pay for usage bundles on a monthly or annual basis.
Outside funding: Less than $1M in outside funding.

Important files such as tax documents, pictures, and final decrees can be shared. Lawyers can also assign tasks to be completed, and clients can upload expense items to be reimbursed by their ex-spouse/co-parent.
How we’re unique: We looked at what was missing in the family law market and what the pain points were for both the lawyers and the clients. We developed a simple, easy-to-use, mobile-friendly, web-based application that allows these lawyers, often in small practices, simple case management tools while also tying in co-parenting tools that clients need from the outset of the case. No other tool is tracking these text message communications and that is how most people are communicating in their personal lives.
Demo video (if any): https://www.linkedin.com/company/familydocket/?viewAsMember=true.
Pricing: Yearly subscription-based fee paid either by the law firm or passed on to the client.
Outside funding: Less than $1M in outside funding. We raised money from private investors as well as friends and family. Our motto is to become the one-stop shop for all law firm reporting needs by bringing together practice management system data with accounting, marketing, and other data sets to create dynamic metrics to really move the dial within the business.
Demo video (if any): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz_5kpUZ2PY.
Pricing: Since we are running analytics on all employees tracking time in the practice management system, we base price on total number of employees: 1-3 =$49/month; 4-9 = $129/month; 10-19 = $299/month; 20+ needs to be reviewed as they will tend to have very specific customization requests.

Hugo Analytics
Founded: 3/3/2017.
Headquarters: Denver, Colo.
Elevator pitch: Hugo enables litigators to test any variety of case theories and strategies using virtual jurors. Litigators can submit material over our JuryMeter website to conduct initial pilot studies and see how 25 mock jurors react to their case. Hugo also provides more customized services that allow litigators to conduct experiments to optimize their case strategies and estimate more precisely the likely outcome of a given case.
How we’re unique: Traditionally, litigators make live presentations to a small number of mock jurors (6-30). Using crowdsourcing, we can recruit more mock jurors at a fraction of the cost. We run pilot studies and obtain initial reactions to cases on our website, www.jurymeter.com. As the numbers of mock jurors increase (think hundreds), we also conduct experiments and use statistical analyses to gain a more scientifically valid estimate of likely outcomes, including both liability and damages.
Demo video (if any): None.
Pricing: For our www.jurymeter.com solution, $500 with volume discounts. For customized experiments, prices as quoted (approximately eight customized experiments for about $50,000).
Outside funding: No outside funding.

All four plans come with unlimited qualified leads (flat-rate pricing) but tiered based on features like multiple languages, instant call, number of websites, number of Intakers, etc. There are some limits on the number of visitors.

Josef
Founded: 7/1/2019.
Headquarters: Melbourne, Australia.

Bots built on Josef automate lawyer-client interactions, draft documents and provide legal guidance and advice.
How we’re unique: Using legal automation platforms usually requires a level of training and expertise that is beyond most lawyers. In law firms and in-house teams, these technologies end up being used exclusively by technical experts. Josef turns that model on its head by driving adoption of its visual logic builder and no-code-document-automation among practitioners across legal organizations. We see adoption and bot-building by everyone from paralegals to partners, assistants to legal operations.
Demo video (if any): None.
Pricing: Customers pay for a subscription to Josef. Subscription levels may vary based on the number of bots launched or distribution of access to the platform.
Outside funding: Less than $1M in outside funding.

Text A Lawyer
Founded: 4/27/2017.
Headquarters: Beaverton, Ore.
Elevator pitch: We provide captive client leads for lawyers that have at least $21 of skin in the game. These leads convert at a high rate. Lawyers actually get paid to field these leads in real time. For the person who has a legal question, they are able to get legal advice from a local, verified attorney for $21 without having to wait. We’ve gone to great lengths to remain compliant with ethical rules, using our credit card processor to handle the funds, avoiding retainer issues and fee-sharing.
How we’re unique: We’re the world’s fastest way to hire a lawyer, period. We also go to great lengths to appeal to the ethically-conscious lawyer, like deleting encrypted client conversations off our server on a daily basis, providing a full transcript via email, and giving lawyers various options to reject a client mid-chat (scope, ethics, wrong state/category).
We launched Aug. 31, 2019 for landlord/tenant issues in Oregon. We will soon be opening in new cities and with new categories, including personal injury, family, business, and immigration.
Demo video (if any): www.textalawyernow.com.
Pricing: We have three:
The first question costs $21, with $10 to the lawyer as an earned fixed fee, $5 as a once-per connection attorney verification fee, $5 as a per-question software license fee, and about $1 for the credit card processor we use.
The lawyer and client chat until the lawyer gathers enough info to answer the question. They toggle to “”Final Answer”” mode. Upon receiving a final answer, the client has three minutes to read and decide whether to ask a follow-up question for $11. Follow-up questions for $11 can continue “a la carte” indefinitely. The lawyer earns $5 on each follow up, with the $5 per-question software license fee remaining the same.
We charge lawyers a $100 per month access fee on a renewable contract subscription. Lawyers earn $10 on the initial question and $5 on each follow-up. Answering a small handful of questions each month zeros out our fee, allowing lawyers to net a small nest egg answering questions and interviewing new clients.
Lawyers only give out their contact info in a final answer, and only if they want that client to re-hire them off platform. This is our real value – and it’s free for lawyers, an incredible deal!
Outside funding: Less than $1M in outside funding.

Our patent-pending AI-enabled auto-template engine automatically converts existing templates (HotDocs or Contract Express) into Woodpecker templates with the click of a button. The Tech Savvy Lawyer - Web Technologies And Legal Firms

The Tech Savvy Lawyer - Web Technologies And Legal Firms
The Legal Industry & Information Technology
Like all other industries, the legal industry is not insulated from the tremendous changes in information technology over the past decade, and the challenges and opportunities it presents. If anything, the changes have more bearing on law firms & departments because information management is at the core of what they do – consulting with clients, colleagues or experts; increasing compliance & regulation demands, wading through a constantly expanding sea of legislation and case law; managing outsourcing partners; keeping abreast with latest developments; or managing a mountain of matter files.
Recent Trends
Perhaps the most significant change in the legal services industry the decline of “relationship lawyering”.
Recent times have seen increased competition, & changes in underlying market structure. There has been a continuing trend of decline of “relationship lawyering”. Traditionally strong relationships between law firms and corporates are eroding, with more companies opting for in-house legal departments, or “shopping around” for the best deal. Another significant trend is the increasing convergence of legal markets, where competition is as likely to come from a firm in another state or overseas as from a local firm. These & other developments are exerting greater pressures on legal firms to be more efficient, an it is imperative that attorneys spend their time analyzing information, rather than organizing or managing it.
Drivers of Technology Adoption by Legal Firms
Possibilities of Technology – The primary driver of greater use of information technology by legal firms is developments in technology itself. New technologies & greater bandwidths allow great possibilities in the arenas of information management, productivity and remote collaboration. Information can be moved over the internet with greater security. And unlike yesteryear, law firms can access these technologies without hefty costs and the need to set up specialized IT departments.
In 2004, Forrester Research Inc estimated that some 39,000 legal jobs will have moved offshore by the end of 2008.
Outsourcing – Legal firms are now increasingly open to legal process outsourcing of tasks they traditionally held close – research, transcription, coding and even legal research and the drafting of legal documents. It is commonplace to see a NY based law firm, subletting research work to a team of professional lawyers & paralegals in Bangalore, India. This enables firms to majorly cut down costs & concentrate on core legal functions. But it also necessitates a greater need to communicate, collaborate & monitor the functioning of outsourcing vendors hundreds or thousands of miles away. Security is also an issue, since performance of the services often requires access to regulated consumer data or other sensitive data.
In 2004, almost 60% of lawyers worked at multi-office firms and over 10% of lawyers work at firms with ten or more offices.
Geographic Diversification – As mentioned before, there is a distinct movement towards multiple office firms, with offices spread both nationally and globally. US based companies are now serving many foreign clients, or serving foreign interests of domestic clients. There was a significant presence of international clients in even the smallest law firms of 1 to 20 lawyers. There has also been a spate of global mergers and acquisitions of law firms in the new millennia. All this necessitates a greater need for communication, collaboration and information exchange between branches.
Regulatory Compliance – Since the Sarbanes Oxley Act came into effect, records management has become an essential requirement. Organizations are required by law to retain certain documents for predefined periods. Also, the amendments to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure went into effect on December 1, 2006, and apply to any firm involved in litigation in the U.S. Federal Court system. The amendments mandate that companies be prepared for electronic discovery. Firms have to drastically alter the way they preserve, retrieve and produce electronic data.
Competition is coming both from firms spread across the nation & the globe, as well as consultants & advisors who were traditionally not considered part of the “legal industry”
Competition – Because of the death of relationship lawyering, and “one stop shopping” by clients, firms cannot afford to be complacent anymore. Moreover, competition is as likely to come from the opposite end of the country or globe, as from local companies. Competition is also coming from other quarters, consultants and advisors who offer services that were previously the purview of lawyers. In this arena of intense competition, lawyers have to double up as “rainmakers” ; networkers (legal business development) in addition to traditional roles.
IT Needs of the Legal Industry
Centralized Document Storage – The legal profession generates a tremendous amount of digital information in the form of case files, contracts, court filings, exhibits, evidence, briefs, agreements, bills, notes, records and other office activity such as email. This information is the firm’s collective knowledge & learning which sets it apart from competition and needs to be retrieved again and again. Compliance also requires certain documents to be stored & retrievable for extended periods of time. Attorneys across different offices need to access and collaborate on this information.
In 2007, 53% percent of lawyers used a PDA outside of the office, 32% to check e-mail.
ABA Law Tech Report 2007
Remote Access – Ready access to crucial documents and information can sometimes be all the difference between a favorable or adverse judgment. Lawyers now have wings on their feet visiting clients, interviewing experts, or attending outstation court proceedings, and are often out of office. It is important that they are able gain LAN like access to documents from the firm’s repository even when they’re not at the office premises.
Document Collaboration – It is not enough to only be able to access documents from the firm’s storage. A single case file may need multiple inputs from attorneys with different expertise, clients, experts, researchers, and other associates spread over the country or even the globe (in case of outsourcing). Therefore it is important to have the ability to concurrently access and work together on the same file, from right where everybody is.
Remote Conferencing – Sometimes the ability to collaborate on a document may not suffice and actual discussion and knocking together of heads might be needed. Web conferencing allows multiple people to get together in a virtual meeting room and discuss issues as effectively as being there in person.
Security – A lot of the information a legal firm handles is highly sensitive client information, which it is bound my business ethics and contracts to protect. Since this information is mostly accessed and distributed over the public network of internet, and often distributed to third parties at some page, security is right at the top as a concern.
Access Control – Another level of security is the ability to manage who sees what information and what they can do with it. Since multiple parties like attorneys and associates across the company, outsourcing partners, and multiple clients access information from the firm’s central storage this is of prime importance.
Productivity Applications – Although managing documents and information is one of the most important things a law firms IT systems need to do, it is not all. They also need the ability to manage and share schedules, to maintain lists of important contacts, to manage and track different tasks and litigations teams or individual attorneys may be involved with, or billing management.
What They Don’t Need
41% of lawyers had no IT staff at any locations for their firm, while 17% have one person, 8% have two, and 38% have three or more
ABA Law Tech Report 2006
IT Hassles – If getting all the above goodies requires setting up a specialized IT department, installing expensive hardware, and managing ongoing maintenance and upgrades, it might just not be worth it for a small to mid sized law firm. Bigger firms have the deep pockets and incentive to set up dedicated systems, but it might not be sustainable for smaller firms.
Complexity – To ensure that attorneys embrace the IT system, attorneys should be able to concentrate on the information itself, rather than grappling with the nitty-gritties of the system.
Costs – Cost, of course is a top consideration for small to mid sized companies across industries. The ongoing costs and hefty capital investments needed for custom and enterprise systems are just out of reach.
The Software-as-a-Service Advantage for Legal Companies – HyperOffice as a Case in Study
SAAS allows firms to pay for using the software rather than owning it
About eight to ten years back, it was true that access to the above technologies was available only to huge firms whose budget and scale justified dedicated IT departments. Times have changed since then. The software as a service (SAAS) approach, allows even small to mid sized firms easy access to big business technologies, but without having to deal with the messy underbelly and huge costs associated with them.
Benefits of SAAS Solutions
– Low Implementation
– Cost Effective
– Flexible
– Mobile Access
– Enterprise Class Features
– Backup & Security
– Updates & Enhancements
Software as a service (SAAS) is an approach where the software vendor undertakes the burden of creating, hosting, maintaining and securing the application upon himself, and further lets it out to customers over the internet as a service. Customers do not pay for owning the software itself but rather for using it. Some specific benefits of the SAAS approach are as follows:-
No Implementation, No Dedicated IT Department – Since the backend is taken care of by the vendor, users don’t have to bother about hardware, software downloads, server security, configuration etc. Implementation cycles of months are cut down to just a few days. For example, HyperOffice just requires a sign up, and customers can get it up and running within minutes.
Cost Effective: Scale Up & Down as Needed – The cost structure of SAAS solutions is usually a reasonable monthly per user fee. This ensures that minimal costs are locked in, unlike enterprise solutions where tens of thousands of dollars are committed. Moreover, there is no cost uncertainty, as terms are clearly laid out, which allows for greater predictability.
Big Business Features – A range of big business functionality is available to users, but they don’t have to bother about the complex backend which goes with implementing this functionality, since that is the vendor’s headache.
Flexibility & Mobility: Keep Connected Always – These solutions are developed with a view to delivery over the web. This ensures that the system with full functionality is available over simply a web browser, saving users from tiresome downloads or implementations on local workstations. Moreover, since these solutions are children of the internet & mobility era, they also allow access over mobile devices. HyperOffice allows almost full functionality over many mobile device with internet access including iPhone.
User Friendly – Ease of use is of prime importance to a non techie attorney. SAAS solutions are out-of-the-box. Emphasis is on ease of use, with the messy backend taken care of. The entire HyperOffice solution can be managed from a central console and needs no technical expertise at all – truly child’s play!
Backup & Security: Let the Experts Handle It – Ensuring security and disaster preparedness requires effort. Antivirus software needs to be purchased and implemented, the system needs constant monitoring, and physical security of the servers needs to be ensured. Disaster recovery plans also have to be put in place in case of events like fire, natural disasters etc. Backup servers and magnetic tapes have to be maintained, frequency of backups has to be managed etc. Whew!
With SAAS, all this is a part of the messy backend taken care of by the vendor. Moreover, these vendors have developed an expertise hosting and securing applications, since this is their core operation. This is an expertise a mid sized law firm can not, nor would like to develop.

Hiring remote paralegal from India can be a great option for US law firms because it gives you the freedom to HIRE someone who can work with your existing team and grow with your business, instead of hiring an expensive OTE paralegal for a short period of time. A remote paralegal is not just someone hired to fill in for an employee, but a professional that can contribute to the growth of your firm.

A Paradigm Shift in Working Processes of LPOs Was The Need of The Hour!
The legal outsourcing industry has seen exponential growth in the past two decades. With South Asian nations like India still dominating this space, the years 2020 and 2021 saw the outsourcing companies redefining the alternative legal services. The US, the UK, and other European countries’ attorneys opened themselves to the latest technology offerings by these Alternative Legal Services Providers, which helped them maintain their businesses and revenues even during worldwide lockdowns. The law firms and corporates were looking for solutions that could make them hassle-free from the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic. The legal process outsourcing companies (LPOs) worked relentlessly to make remote working seamless without compromising on quality. Realistic solutions were put together and were proposed to the law firms and corporate law departments by the Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) companies. It was a win-win situation and made work ties and relationships stronger across geographies between LPOs and corporates and the law firms.

TLB did a lot of market research and established itself as a Legal Solutions Partner in its own right rather than being present as just another proposition in this vast industry. TLB tried to keep itself out of the highest-price and lowest-price bid brackets and concentrated on customer satisfaction and its own capabilities. Cost offerings by TLB have always been competitive, so TLB only dedicated itself in understanding the pains of the attorneys, general counsels and the paralegals during the lockdown and addressed those. TLB focused on building teams that had worked in the outsourcing industry for decades, so our clients didn’t need to spend a lot of time training TLB’s resources. However, lack of appropriate planning and technology solutions generally leads to wastage of trained resources any day. The use of technology combined with experience and knowledge provides efficient services and that expedites the assignments eventually. TLB’s tech team put efforts to provide end-to-end solutions that benefitted the law firms and corporates immensely. Our clients are cognizant of these efforts and reposed their faith in us, which motivated us further. While there is no denying that most large law firms had the money and resources to sustain themselves, they still needed an outsourcing partner to help them maintain their businesses due to uncertainties around their own resources. TLB provided specialized and curated services to these large law firms and worked closely with the attorneys and paralegals to speed up processes. TLB’s teams reviewed every single file in the cases assigned to them and maintained checklists and organized everything for the attorneys. For the medium and small law firms, TLB stepped up and supported them round the clock on all days by deploying additional resources at predictable costs. TLB shifted its paradigm from being just a simple cost-saving another ALSP to a valuable partner, which provided process automation solutions and specialized teams to its clients. While for some law firms, we became their back-office support and for some others we were strategic and high-end partners. We made ourselves capable of managing complex cases with least of assistance from the paralegals and case managers. We took ownership of the files and directly interacted with the law firm’s clients as an employee of the law firm. This reassured the law firms that we have the right experience to perform each and every task and were resilient enough to meet the standards set out by the attorneys.
Traditionally, the range of services that was outsourced by the law firms to countries like India pertained to medicolegal, immigration, contract lifecycle management, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and electronic discovery but the estate lawyers and other civil litigation practitioners also saw a lot of benefit in outsourcing their processes. Especially, the Wills Estate Planning domain grew steadily in the outsourcing business in the past two years. The Legal Base (TLB) created a specialized and dedicated team to support the wills estate planning attorneys. This team comprised of lawyers who were experienced in wills estate planning and trusts and had worked with US attorneys in the past. We have successfully made a base of wills and estate planning and civil ligation clients that outsource various levels work to TLB.
As TLB is a business-driven organization too so innovation has always been the top priority. TLB has done away with the old and redundant methods of outsourcing services and has adapted to new technologies to accelerate your practice and boost your profits. Alongside the expert teams and the tech teams, TLB has project managers, quality analysts and client services managers to provide a holistic support rather than just helping you with repetitive manual and administrative work.
TLB has always respected the distinct cultures of your countries and have tried to educate themselves well about the people with whom they work. These have particularly helped TLB in bridging gaps and enhancing the outsourcing relationships. Teams continuously made efforts of doing regular meetings with the paralegals and attorneys over video communication-based platforms. In fact, there is an increasing sense of collaboration and teamwork that now defines our working with the staff of law firms and corporate law departments, rather than being in a competition. TLB values its clients and you will find in us a committed, flexible, agile and scalable partner!
