So I hadn't seen anyone on my Conan server in a while and I wasn't using it enough to justify the cost of renting it, so the other day I decided to shut it down.
So, in memory of my server that, however briefly, upward of a dozen people played on, I felt like talking a bit about the backstory I'd come up with for my exile on there:
I decided it would be fun to tie her backstory into the old Conan comics somehow, so I made her a former follower of the evil 1980s aerobics instructor sorceress Nojingo, the Witch-Queen of Yamatai!

So, our girl Yasuyo here was a poor girl growing up on the island of Yamatai at a time when it was wracked by near-constant tribal war, angry at the world for allowing such death and misery. So, of course, she jumped at the chance to become one of Nojingo's clunkily-named Butterflies With Swords, first drawn by the promise of uniting Yamatai and later just using her newfound power as a member of the Witch-Queen's private army to lash out and hurt people like she'd been hurt in the past.
...And then a big fight broke out in Nojingo's fortress one night and she went apeshit, magically turning all of Yasuyo's dead friends into a meat slurry that formed itself into a giant demon monster that killed everything in sight. Though Yasuyo survived, the things she saw that night finally convinced her that she'd taken the wrong path in life and she went into a self-imposed exile, stealing a little boat and setting sail for Khitai. (The fact that she knew she'd most likely be executed for following Nojingo if anyone found her no doubt had something to do with her decision as well.) From there I saw her as sort of a wandering problem solver, trying to atone for her past actions by helping those in need but unable to really let go of her brutal methods of doing so.
I have no idea what she got up to between then and finding herself nailed to a cross in the desert, because who cares, I wasn't gonna do anything with her anyway. Maybe if I found a roleplaying server to play her on, but...ehhh.

Conan Exiles
I really want to play this game but stupid rent time is making it impossible for me LOL. Seriously, though, I’ve always been a fan of Conan in any form. I eventually would like to play it with my wife Lassenby but it sounds like the Multiplayer servers are having troubles.
Oh and if you’re wondering...the endowment slider is only a partial fraction of why I want to play it LOL. Been a fan of Conan since I was a kid.

Conan Exiles Finally Removes Denuvo
Conan Exiles Finally Removes Denuvo | #ConanExiles #Denuvo #Games4Patriots
To say Denuvo isn’t popular is an understatement. Why it is hated varies from person to person, with some hating how it means they never own the game and are just renting it until the servers shut down. At which point, none of the Denuvo protected games will function. Others point to how it is a blatant piece of malware, so intrusive that it now needs to log your key entries and data mine your…

The rise of backend as a service
Why your multiplayer backend will become at least as important as your graphics engine.
Graphics engines have come a long way. The commoditization of graphics-tech enabled game developers to deliver top-notch visuals without having to build six-figure technology first. A point is to be made that a similar process is underway for online functionality.
Evolving Technology With devices of all kinds having continuous internet connectivity, online features in games have become a staple of game design. This is most obvious when looking at the small fraction of games that do not have multiplayer modes nowadays, but it extends further. Online tech enables developers to create new game mechanics, better user experiences and deeper engagement. Just over a decade ago, building a multiplayer game came with a host of issues to sort out. Issues the developer would have to deal with since there was little to show for available services and technology.
To name just a few, devs had to deal with: – Network Address Translation – Reliable transport of data – Wildly varying network stacks across platforms – Differing approaches to user account handling – Differences in basic system architecture – Connectivity across regions – Database scalability – Many hosting options, but few good ones – Restrictions on platform interoperability
Not all of the hurdles are truly gone, but for pretty much all of them there are solutions and well-known best practices now.
In Rune 2 players craft, fight and explore within the Nine Realms – alone or in groups.
State of the Art for Everyone With base tech concerns out of the way, higher-level functions become less of a hassle. Actually, building all of these features is still a huge challenge, but there are options now. Matchmaking
True cross-platform is a thing now and you are not limited to 1st party services. You should check out Playfab, Amazon Gamelift, zeuz or any of the offerings out there. Better, more versatile matchmaking is a complex topic of its own and emerging game designs present new challenges like team-based matchmaking or integration with game server orchestration.
Multiplayer Servers For multiplayer games, you need some sort of server-side support. Even in a pure peer-to-peer game, relying on client-to-client connectivity is very risky. At the very least, you need a relay server to distribute player input.
Daedalic’s upcoming RTS A Year Of Rain has a strong esports focus and is supported by the zeuz multiplayer backend.
To combat cheating or to provide more complex gameplay, an authoritative match server works better. Server frameworks are available and work with all major game engines. Gamelift, zeuz or Improbable offer framework technology and for many games, so-called Cloud Script or Cloud Code features such as Playfab’s provide just the flexibility you need.
Persistent Games Games that provide a persistent world with players joining and leaving at will are more challenging. While the range of available technology is much more limited here, there is still a lot to make your life easier.
Fast data storage is readily available with NoSQL databases like Redis, Couchbase or MongoDB. Setting these up for large-scale operations is decidedly non-trivial, but there is hardly any need anymore to reinvent the wheel.
Hell let loose by Team 17: Up to 100 players per server fight across huge maps.
Large, persistent game worlds also typically mean that a standalone server is not good enough. Building a reliable cluster for server-side gameplay has become a lot easier with container technology and Kubernetes. There are gotchas to keep in mind though. You do not want to run a Windows game server in vanilla Kubernetes. And you have to keep server memory consumption in check to avoid it blowing up in your face. Still, the availability of large-scale cluster technology (at low-to-zero cost) greatly broadens the range of developers able to build persistent worlds.
Clusters can be self-hosted (a.k.a. on-premise) or rented as a service. While PaaS (Platform as a Service) offerings like AWS, GCP, Azure, DigitalOcean or zeuz reduce the knowhow a team has to accumulate, they typically also come at a premium. So, watch out for long-term cost.
zeuz first big project was the survival MMO Conan Exiles by Funcom.
Telemetry Knowing what the players do is key information to enhance a game’s performance, both in terms of player experience and market performance.
This area has seen massive development with Big Data tech becoming manageable. Between ElasticSearch, Hadoop and a bunch of other products, developers have a wide range of tools at their hands to collect, process and analyze realtime data.
Combined with techniques like player segmentation and A/B testing, telemetry helps you build better games.
Great battles with customizable characters and classes in Mordhau by Triternion. The game reached 66,000 CCUs with the support of zeuz.
Impact on Game Design With online technology being more accessible and versatile, the design space for games broadens considerably. Over the last few years, we have seen new game mechanics evolve and become massively popular. MOBA, Battle Royale and cooperative sandbox are just a few of new gameplay concepts that would not even be possible without stable and scalable online game technology.
Almost every year we see new ideas entering the market that were unfeasible or outright impossible not so long ago.
Game design does not need to bother anymore with the question of whether you can handle six to eight players in a match technology-wise. With the tools at hand, game design does not have to guess as much and can instead inspect what works and what does not with actual players.
The fascination with novelty in games will undoubtedly continue to shift from technical achievements towards gameplay innovations as restrictions are left behind.
Just as 3D game engines paved the road to richer games that do not solely rely on graphics innovations to sell, broadly available online technology and services will create a new design space for developers to realize innovative and unique game concepts.
Carsten Orthbandt Technical Advisor at zeuz.io, pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in multiplayer infrastructure and hybrid cloud solutions. The industry veteran has always been a technology frontrunner, employing modern development tools and strategies ever since he started his career at Terratools.

Adventures on a Conan Exiles public server, days five and six
Yeah I skipped posting about day five, fuck you nobody's following these anyway.
On day five, I decided it was time to get the Sorcery feat, so I threw together a set of medium armor that I wouldn't mind losing, emptied out my pockets except for a few essentials, and struck out west for Shaleback Hollow. I had a plan.

On the way, I took the opportunity to look at what the other players had built along the river.

...Is this a fucking church?

I wonder what the rent is like in this neighborhood.
Because I'm a super-size dipshit fuckface moron, I didn't screenshot my journey into Shaleback Hollow. Since I didn't feel like fighting my way through a bunch of undead shalebacks, my plan was to set down my bedroll outside the cave and then just book it through, figuring I could get to Kurak's hidey-hole before I took too much damage.
I forgot to set down the bedroll. It didn't matter though, because there was only one undead shaleback in the cave, and I was able to avoid it easily.

So now I have a thaumaturgy table! I don't really care that much about sorcery itself, I'm more into playing slippery little stab machines, but now I can use its transmog function to make myself a set of basic light armor for the encumbrance bonus, and then transmog them to look like the Khitan exile armor.

Because fashion.
Day six I didn't do shit, I just ran out and collected some iron to feel productive.

Next time: who gives a shit!

Last weekend there was a free trial of Conan: Exiles. A survival, sandbox online game. Feeling a little samey samey with Final Fantasy 14 (I mean, we have put over 1k hours into it) we decided to take a break into barbarian times.
Initially boyface and I were playing with him hosting. This meant that I could only play when he was online and in-game. There are loads of public servers you can play in, some PvE only, some PvP, but you can also just straight up rent a server. So we’ve paid up for a couple of months and we’ll see how that goes. Now both of us can be online whenever. We’ve also roped a friend into playing on our server, though he’s only popped in once or twice. He has other gaming obligations so we only get him when he’s not busy. But still, we’ve been on little adventures with him.
We built a little house each at the beginning with a fenced off area, but then went scouting for something better. We found this cliff-side plateau with resources below and above us, and built little walls so we were safe. Then we got to work and built a giant house with plenty of room for work benches.
It’s very very sandboxy, so “make your own fun” kind of deal, minimal guidance on what to do. There is an end-point to the game where it’s like “congrats you win. game over.” but you have to actively work to that. So far we’ve mostly done building, catching pets (and people!) and training them up, a bit of exploring and dungeoning.
And now since I’ve been neglecting GW, I think I’m gonna go play that for a bit.

Conan Exiles Will Support Dedicated Servers, Steam Workshop Mods
Funcom’s experiment with a hardcore, open-world, sandbox MMO in the form of Conan Exiles seems to be aiming for the really hardcore of the hardcore gaming audience. They plan on having a number of dedicated official servers for the Early Access launch, but they’re also offering options for custom dedicated servers hosted by players, along with third-party servers that can be rented.
