Now, it’ll be up to you to decide if you want to see as much as you possibly can of Jordan in these 3 days… or pick out the sights that are most unique to Jordan and give them ample time for exploring. For this post, I’m actually going to do 2 itineraries – 1 itinerary featuring what we actually did (and this is how you can see the majority of the highlights in 3 days) and also 1 itinerary featuring what I would do if I could do it over.

How to Spend 3 Days in Jordan // Itinerary #1 – Northern Jordan (Jerash, Ajloun Umm Qais) + the Dead Sea + Petra + Wadi Rum

Transport Options for These Itineraries

Before we get into the itineraries, I’m going to share a few different options you have for getting around in Jordan…

Take tours – tours are easy and a stress-free way to get to all of the places mentioned in this post. (I’ll share some recommendations for each spot as well.)

Hire a private driver – this is what we did. We booked a driver for our entire time in Jordan who took us from Amman and to all of the places we wanted to see. This is a little pricier than a group tour, but it was great to go everywhere at our own pace and not worry about driving.

Rent a car and drive yourself from Amman – Driving in Jordan is much more organized than I had expected. If you’re comfortable driving in foreign countries, you would be just fine driving in Jordan. Amman has some traffic, like any other major city, but overall driving in Jordan is not chaotic at all. (If you’re from the US, you’re in luck, because you also drive on the righthand side of the road in Jordan.) Check out car rental rates, here.

Day 1 – Drive to Northern Jordan to See Jerash, Ajloun & Umm Qais

We flew into Amman late the night before, so we slept in a little at our hotel in Amman before venturing out to Northern Jordan. (If you’re flying into Amman this morning, you could also easily drive from the airport to Jerash.)

Jerash is the highlight of this day. It’s sometimes called the “Pompeii of the East” because its Roman ruins are so well-preserved. (Click here for more info.)

Ajloun is also very impressive! It’s a 12th-century Arab castle that is not terribly overwhelmed by tourists. (It felt as though we had this place to ourselves!) It’s only about a half-hour drive from Jerash.

Umm Qais is a Greco-Roman town that’s located on a hillside with sweeping views of the Sea of Galilee and 3 countries – Jordan, Israel, Syria and also Palestine Territories. There are ruins of ancient Gadara here and very few tourists. This is also the furthest spot away from Amman. (It’s over a 2-hour drive.) So, if you’re short on time this day…skipping Umm Qais would be your best bet, as the other two destinations are quite close to one another and aren’t too far of a drive.

Day 2 – Drive to Madaba & Mount Nebo & the Dead Sea

Overnight in Amman or at a Dead Sea Resort

*This private tour will take you to all the places mentioned in Day 2.

For this day, you’ll set out from Amman to Madaba. Madaba is an ancient town in Jordan, southwest of Amman. This is about a 45-minute drive from Amman. Madaba is best known for its 6th-century mosaic map in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. (Click here for more info.)

Just had to wait a little bit for the crowds to disperse!

There is also a lovely little museum between Madaba and Mt. Nebo called “La Storia Tourism Complex.” The people who work here are SO friendly and enthusiastic – I loved it. The museum itself is filled with dioramas that depict various historical and biblical scenes throughout Jordan and its surrounding region.

Mount Nebo is next up – it’s about 710 meters above sea level with sweeping panoramic views of the valley of the River Jordan and also the city of Jericho…and if the day is clear enough, you can also see Jerusalem.

The Bible says Mount Nebo is where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land. It also says that Moses’ body is possibly buried here – however, there is no current proof of this.

After Mount Nebo, you can finish your day relaxing and floating in the Dead Sea. Personally, I would recommend staying at one of the resorts on the Dead Sea (click here to see them all). We drove back to Amman – and that was just silly, in my opinion. As the next day, it was roughly the same amount of driving to get to Petra.   Day 3 – Petra & Wadi Rum!

Ah, the best for last! Time embrace your inner Indiana Jones! You’ll want to wake up as early as possible to make it Petra before the crowds. It’s about a 3-hour drive from Amman and also the Dead Sea. (Click here to read all of my tips for visiting Petra.)

After Petra, head to Wadi Rum to do a sunset Jeep tour and see “The Valley of the Moon” in all its glory. The sand in Wadi Rum is known for being the reddest in Jordan (colored by iron oxide). Wadi Rum looks so much like Mars – many movies have been filmed here for their otherworldly scenes such as The Martian, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Prometheus, Red Planet and…of course, Lawrence of Arabia – just to name a few. Then, end your day at a super cool desert camp! We stayed at Mazayen Rum Camp, and it was nothing short of amazing! A photo of our “tent” is below.

Now, this 1st itinerary will ensure you hit the majority of the sights in Jordan in your 3 days! However, the next itinerary is how I would do it if I had to redo my 3 days in Jordan…

How to Spend 3 Days in Jordan // Itinerary #2 – Petra + Wadi Rum + the Dead Sea

Day 1 – Petra

Overnight in Petra (Wadi Musa)

I would head straight to Petra on your first day in Jordan. Petra is a sight unique to Jordan that deserves at least an entire day + an overnight stay to really do it justice (in my opinion). Doing a day trip here is cutting it too short. (Click here to read all of my tips for visiting Petra.)

Day 2 – Petra + Wadi Rum

If you didn’t get enough time exploring Petra on your first day, you could do one more hike that morning before heading to Wadi Rum. Then, in Wadi Rum you could do another hike or camel ride or Jeep tour – depending on your preference.

Day 3 – Dead Sea

Overnight at a Dead Sea Resort

Wake up bright and early to enjoy the sunrise from your desert camp. Then, hit the road to the Dead Sea. (It’s about a 4-hour drive, unfortunately.)

Spend the rest of the day lounging by the Dead Sea and slathering on some of that magical Dead Sea mud!

This second itinerary is my personal preference because, for me, Petra and Wadi Rum were the highlights of this trip. They are such unique and otherworldly experiences, that deserve far more time than the first itinerary allows. If you’ve never been to the Dead Sea, and aren’t planning to visit Israel, then the Dead Sea is a must as well. However, if a trip to Israel is on your bucket list – I’d save the Dead Sea for that trip, and spend an extra day exploring Petra instead.

An Assassin’s Tool Kit: When Guns Are Not Enough

In the ruthless worlds of espionage, global politics and the criminal underground, there are many grim ways to die:

Tea laced with polonium. A face full of the nerve agent VX. A gentleman’s umbrella that shoots ricin pellets.

Sometimes the assassination attempts leave a mystery in their wake, as in the case of the Russian double agent Sergei V. Skripal and his daughter, Yulia Skripal, who were poisoned by a type of military-grade nerve agent called Novichok in Salisbury, England, this month.

The episode set off a diplomatic row between Britain and Russia, and is one in a long line of dastardly plots that have captured the public’s imagination. Here is a selection, and the deadly implements deployed.

Ice Ax to the Head. Leon Trotsky, a Russian revolutionary who created the Soviet Red Army, saw himself as Lenin’s heir, but when Lenin died, he was outflanked by Stalin in the power struggle that followed.

Trotsky fled into exile and ended up in a leafy suburb of Mexico City in 1940, where an agent of Stalin paid him a visit. The assassin, Ramón Mercader, got into Trotsky’s study with a shortened mountaineering pick hidden under his clothes. When Trotsky turned his back, he buried it in Trotsky’s cranium. The Russian died the next day, Aug. 21.

Killer Clowns. Francisco Rafael Arellano Félix, a Mexican drug kingpin and former leader of the Tijuana Cartel, was celebrating at a birthday party when he was felled by armed men dressed as clowns.

The drug lord had hobnobbed with celebrities and sports stars, and his family, known as the Arellano Félix clan, was said to have inspired the film “Traffic.”

At the birthday party at a rented beach house in Los Cabos, Mexico, in 2013, assassins with red noses and bright orange wigs mingled among 100 guests. Footage of the scene captures Mr. Arellano Félix’s last moments. As two bands played and a man sang, the clowns began shooting.

“He was hit by two bullets, one in the chest and one in the head,” Isai Arias, a Baja California state government official, said at the time. Mr. Arellano Félix died at 63. The clowns escaped.

Spiked Toothpaste. Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was a champion of African unity and of self-determination for his own country, which had been colonized by Belgium.

But Western governments, which had big stakes in his nation, wanted his head. (The United States, which was believed to have used uranium from Congolese mines for the Hiroshima atomic bomb, feared the charismatic Congolese politician would become an African Fidel Castro.)

The C.I.A. considered poisoning his toothpaste. “I was totally taken aback,” Larry Devlin, a former C.I.A. officer, recalled in The New York Times in 2008 about being handed the toxic toothpaste in 1960 to carry out the assassination. He stalled, believing that the killing would have had “disastrous” global effects, he said.

Mr. Lumumba was deposed in 1960. He fled but was captured, tortured and killed by Congolese fighters on Jan. 17, 1961. His murder is considered one of the most important assassinations of the 20th century; it took place seven months after Congo won independence.

Nerve Agent in the Ear, and Face. Most do not see the attacks coming.

Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half brother of North Korea’s leader, perished after getting the nerve agent VX in his face at a Malaysian airport in February 2017, when he was set upon by two women who later said they had been recruited for what they were told was a prank.

The Hamas leader Khaled Meshal was targeted in September 1997 by Mossad agents who sprayed poison on his skin. The plot failed after Israel handed over the antidote.

Two men waited until he was about to enter his office in Amman before one walked up and tried to spray a lethal nerve toxin on his neck, but missed and got him in his ear. He later said that a shivering sensation raced down his spine “like an electric shock.”

At the hospital, the Hamas leader was given two days to live. A furious King Hussein of Jordan demanded that Israel provide the antidote, saying the Mossad agents could otherwise face execution. In an extraordinary move, Israel had an agent hand it over, saving Mr. Meshal’s life.

A Camera Bomb. Gen. Ahmed Shah Massoud, an Afghan warlord, was assassinated in 2001 by two men posing as journalists. They entered his headquarters in the Panjshir Valley in northern Afghanistan, where General Massoud sat on a couch. The “reporter” detonated a bomb strapped to his waist. The “cameraman” set off a bomb hidden in the camera and ran from the room, jumping into the River Oxus, but the general ‘s bodyguards pulled him out and killed him.

A Deadly Umbrella. The dissident writer Georgi Markov defected from his communist homeland of Bulgaria in 1969 to start a new life in London, where he became a reporter for the BBC.

Waiting to catch a bus to work on Waterloo Bridge on Sept. 7, 1978, he felt a sharp pain on the back of his right thigh but continued on to work. He developed a fever, was admitted to a hospital in South London and died four days later.

An inquiry revealed someone had used a specially adapted umbrella to inject a pellet containing the poison ricin into his leg. The culprit was later identified as a Bulgarian spy, Francesco Gullino, a.k.a. Agent Piccadilly.

The Men Who Would Not Die. Two figures stand out in assassination lore: Fidel Castro, the Cuban strongman, and Rasputin, the wild-eyed, deeply reviled monk who influenced Russia’s last czar.

The attempts on Castro’s life included:

• A contaminated skin-diving suit: According to a summary of the C.I.A.’s assassination plots, an American lawyer, James B. Donovan, was to give Castro a contaminated skin-diving suit while the two negotiated for the release of the Bay of Pigs prisoners.

“The C.I.A. plan was to dust the inside of the suit with a fungus producing Madura foot, a disabling and chronic skin disease, and also contaminating the suit with tuberculosis bacilli in the breathing apparatus,” the document states.

The lawyer chose instead to give Castro a clean skin-diving suit “as a gesture of friendship,” and the modified one never left the laboratory.

• A booby-trapped seashell: C.I.A. experts were asked to consider packing a seashell with explosives, so that it could be left in one of Castro’s favored diving haunts, rigged to kill him if he picked it up.

“It was determined that there was no shell in the Caribbean area large enough to hold a sufficient amount of explosive which was spectacular enough to attract the attention of Castro,” the documents say.

• Fatal cigars: The plan was to put a botulinum toxin into a box of his favorite cigars. The cigars were delivered in 1961--but never reached Castro.

• Botulism, again: Marita Lorenz told Vanity Fair in 1993 that as Castro’s lover in 1959, she was recruited to assassinate him by dropping two botulism-toxin pills into his drink. She had reservations, and then found out that by putting the pills in a cold-cream jar, she had spoiled them. She said the wily Castro had her all shook up, anyway:

“He leaned over, pulled out his .45, and handed it to me. He didn’t even flinch. And he said, ‘You can’t kill me. Nobody can kill me.’ And he kind of smiled and chewed on his cigar … I felt deflated. He was so sure of me. He just grabbed me. We made love.”

Rasputin, who had gained enormous influence in the court of Nicholas II with his claims to healing powers, survived several assassination attempts before an elaborate conspiracy unfolded in December 1916 to kill him once and for all.

Prince Felix Yusupov invited him to Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg, where he was fed cake laced with potassium cyanide and copious amounts of cyanide-spiked Madeira--but did not die.

He was shot, but ran. He was shot again and again. Some reports say the conspirators even stabbed him. Finally, he was thrown into a car and driven to Petrovski Island, where he was dropped into the Neva River and drowned.

I was standing outside of Jabal Al-Qalaa – the highest vantage point to the rolling hilled city of Amman. Open your eyes here and in the heart of the city below, you’d see the large buff-colored stones of the roman theatre, look to your right and standing tall are the formidable pillars of the temple of Hercules, close your eyes and you’d hear the muezzin’s calls to prayer reverberating through the countless minarets of the city.

Inhabited by humans since the Paleolethic period, the country of Jordan was occupied by the Babylonian and Mesopotamian empires, the Nabateans, the Romans, the Greeks, the Persians, the Ottoman; at various points in its history. All that have ruled here have left their distinctive mark on the country’s culture, design and architecture and this has culminated in one the most harmonious juxtapositions of the modern era.

Out trip to Jordan commenced with Amman as our port of entry. While being the capital of Jordan, it is the political, cultural and commercial centre and of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Prior to our trip, we had purchased a Jordan pass which is essentially a super pass for your stay in Jordan – it not only provides entry to many tourist sites but also includes a visitor visa for the adults. As for the children’s visas, it was a visa on arrival, the fees can be paid through a credit card at the airport immigration counter; rented a car at the airport and drove to our hotel.

Day 1 – After breakfast we visited the old town. The narrow streets of the old town were clogged with selfie-snapping tourists and there was not a corner spared. We made our way through the most populous city in Jordan and reached King Faisal street in the heart of the downtown; here tucked away in a very unassuming by lane is perhaps the most famous name in Amman – the Hashem Restaurant. One of the oldest restaurants and an indisputable icon of Amman; it is a very humble street side joint but the best meal of Falafel, Hummus and Mint tea you’d ever treat yourself to.

After the meal we started walking towards the Roman Theatre. On the way we stopped at an Arabic sweet shop called the Habbineh – the kunafa and the baklava here are a must.

Built into a hillside, the 6000 seat theatre was constructed during the time of the Roman emperor Antonius Pius (138-161 CE) and was oriented north to keep sun off the spectators.

It is steep

The roman theatre with its steep seating has an excellent acoustics design (You can stand at the center of the stage and your voice will echo. The person sitting on top of the last row would be able to hear you clearly). It has an unbeatable vantage from the higher seats (the steps leading to the top are steep and the climb is tiresome but worth the effort). It is not happenstance that the theatre is hugely popular for hosting host various events even today.

The top seats of the amphitheatre were the revered ones. As against being closest to the performances, the royalty and other important dignitaries would sit in the top rows to get an unobstructed view of the performances, not to mention the incredible acoustics.

After visiting the roman theatre, we visited one of the popular malls in the city – the Abdali Mall. We then returned to our hotel and called it a day – a special mention for our hotel, the Amman Marriott, an exceptional property with superlative dining options.

Day 2:

Following breakfast we strolled through the old town again. Over the years, it has managed to retain its character reminiscent of an old Arabic Bazaar; many shops, however, have now been replaced by currency exchanges. The city also has its fair share of museums and art galleries. Another exquisite offering are the cafes here; the city is adorned with exquisite cafes. After a quick coffee at the Jafra Cafe we made a mandatory pit stop at the ice cream place outside the cafe and were on our way to the Amman Citadel.

Atop the highest of the seven hills of the city is the Amman Citadel. It houses the ruins of the Temple of Hercules – the formidable towers of which are visible from almost any corner of Amman. Here, at the Citadel, you can get a bird’s eye view of the dramatic contrast in the architecture of the city below. It is absolutely mesmerising.

The entire area is surrounded by a 1,700 feet long wall which has been here since the bronze and iron ages. There’s plenty to see here, but the most striking are the temple of Hercules and the Ummayad palace.

After out visit to the Citadel , we went to one of the roof top restaurants. Amman has its surplus of quality roof top restaurants with breathtaking views of the the city that looks insistently graceful during the day time and surreal when illuminated under the night skies.

After dinner, we returned to our hotel and called it a day.

Jordan had been on our list of places to visit for a while, but it quickly moved to the top when our friends moved there this August. Jordan is a great country to travel in, especially when you have friends to visit :) We found a direct flight from Saigon to Istanbul, and then it was just one more short flight away to Amman, Jordan. Alli and Vaughan picked us up from airport in the morning and we went straight to Jerash, an ancient Roman ruin just outside Amman.

We miss these guys so much! Unfortunately, they still had to work during the week so Ryan and I were on our own for a while. Jordan is a small country, making it easy to drive from place to place. We rented a car and drove down to Petra, which was only about four hours away from Amman. We stopped at Al-Karak (for a castle and falafel sandwich) and Dana Biosphere Reserve (for some birding and a short hike) to break up the drive. 

Petra was definitely a highlight of the trip. It takes about 30 minutes to walk a narrow gorge known as the Siq down to the Treasury. We woke up early to be some of the first to get a clear view and avoid the crowds. Petra is sometimes known as the Rose City because of the color of stone out of which it is carved. The carvings in the rocks are actually mostly tombs - the people who lived in the city most likely camped in tents.

The Treasury is the most famous of the sites, but Petra is huge and there are no regulations about where you can or cannot go. As we continued on, we resisted the urge to see the Royal Tombs or city center right away, and made a left before the Theater to climb up to the High Place of Sacrifice while the air was still cool. This was the best decision of the day. After sitting and enjoying the view with two Bedouin we wandered down some back trails in Wadi Farasa.

The worst decision of the day was trying to make it the Monastery on the same day. It was still early by the time we made our way out of Wadi Farasa (about 9am) but we had been walking for about three hours without a meal. Food stalls don’t open until around 11am yet we carried on with a steep hike up another high hill. The Monastery is actually even more impressive than the Treasury - it’s similar in style but much bigger and a more rewarding view after the climb you have to make to reach it. We were too exhausted to truly enjoy the area (there are also other side trails from the Monastery to explore) and instead collapsed at the teahouse opposite and were saved by some hummus wraps - food at last! 

Our best advice is to save the Monastery for day two, and to make your way back to the Theater and Royal Tombs after exiting Wadi Farasa. There is even another entrance to the park that leads you to the Monastery in a more direct way.

From Petra we drove to Wadi Rum. You might recognize it from movies such as the Martian, Aladdin, or the planet of Pasaana in the latest Star Wars movies (and the desert shots in Rogue One). Once there, we hired a jeep tour for one day and one night in the lunar landscape. We really enjoyed the tour, which stops at various sites where you can climb dunes or rock formations for a better view of the area. That night, we slept in traditional bedouin tents while our guides cooked a delicious underground barbecue for dinner. 

We were eager to get back to Amman to visit with Alli and Vaughan again once the weekend hit. They planned an awesome Friday (their Saturday) for us, which included floating in the Dead Sea and “hiking” Wadi Mujib. I put “hiking” in parentheses because Wadi Mujib is a canyon river at the end of a waterfall, and so it required ropes to climb past the quick currents of the river. On the way back we used the rocks as slides and the current to float like otters back to the entrance. After we had lunch at Haret Jdoudna a favorite restaurant in Madaba. We ended the weekend with them exploring the city of Amman and rug shopping. Our hallway in Saigon now reflects the orange, red, and brown colors of the Jordan desert :)
