Today, Pedro, the bass player of Tahiti 80, brought me his ca ‘93 Big Muff Civil War made in Russia to fix some kind of little bugs. The sound is awesome !

This week on the bench : two silverface Fender amp. One is a Vibrochamp and the other one is a Champ.

Hi everyone ! I was too busy these last months to take the time to post anything here. So here’s my last work : the restoration of an old Roland SH-02. Its owner found it covered in dust and rust in a cave. It was very dirty, all posts were crackling and one of the IC (the kind that is very hard to find) was burnt. The ribbon cables were a bit tired and rusty too.

Anyway, everything is working fine now !!!

Here my latest work on the bench : the Laney/Klipp Reverb K40L. It’s a solid-state amp from the mid 70′s. The tremolo is really funny and deep and the sound is quite good.

Today on the bench : a Korg Micro-Preset M500 from the late 70's. 

It has a strange sound matrix (string, wood, voice, bass) with also the possibility to use some synthesizer VCOs (with white and pink noise). 

The sound is awesome with some kind of weird waves. It's possible to tweak the synth sounds with a few option (LFO, VCF, a little enveloppe, a portamento).

The little lilacs capacitors were very old and some of them leaked on the PCB. Some copper traces were destroyed by the electrolytic fluid from the caps. I removed them all and changed them by new ones.  

The keyboard wire was also acting weird so I put a new one.   Everything is fine now !!!

Look at this little cutie !!! A late silverface Fender Champ AA764 ! No big trouble here, just some cleaning and a good check-up (and the change of the electrolytic capacitors).

Today, I modded an old soviet vintage synth from the early 80′s. It’s a monophonic synth called the Aelita / Аэлита. My customer just wanted me to remove the old 5 pin DIN output plug and replace it by a standard jack plug. More info here, and here.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai moddé un vieux synthé vintage (années 80) de l’ère soviétique. Il s’agit d’un synthé monophonique appelé Aelita / Аэлита. Mon client voulait juste que je retire la vieille prise DIN 5 broches et que je la remplace par une prise jack traditionnelle. Plus d’infos ici et ici.

Today on the bench, a vintage analog synth from the late 70′s early 80′s : the Korg λ (Lambda) ! The octave up rocker switch acts really weirdly. It’s a common issue on this synth, and I’ll try to check the 4066 chip to see if the problem come from here...

Le switch de la fonction “octave up” se comporte vraiment bizarrement. Il s’agit d’un problème récurrent sur ce synthé et je vais essayer de vérifier si les soucis ne viennent pas de la puce 4066.

One of my customer brought me an old ‘78 Fender Princeton Reverb Silverface for servicing. The amp was running quiet well but some kind of volume trouble and distortion were destroying any sounds you could put in. I changed the old push/pull volume pot for another good CTS pot and put new power tubes (6V6GT). I also made a little mod in order to adjust the bias with accuracy and set a proper static dissipation wattage within the tubes specs. So now, there’s a little potentiometer to adjust the screen voltage.

Un de mes clients m’a apporté un Fender Princeton Reverb Silverface de 78 pour un peu d’entretien. L’ampli marchait à peu près correctement mais il y avait des soucis de distorsion à bas volume qui détruisait le son de la guitare et n’étaient vraiment pas jolis. J’ai changé le vieux potard push/pull de volume pour y mettre un bon vieux potard CTS et j’ai remis des nouveaux tubes de puissance (6V6GT). J’ai aussi fait une petite modification pour pouvoir ajuster le bias avec précision et régler la puissance dissipée par les tubes dans la fourchette prévue par leur spécifications. Il y a donc maintenant un petit potentiomètre pour ajuster la tension de l’écran.

Today on the workbench : the Armon P100. Something like a late 70′s early 80′s organ with rhythm box and effects. No schematic available anywhere on internet so I tried my best to guess who’s who.

Aujourd’hui sur l’établi : le Armon P100. Un orgue qui doit dater plus ou moins de la fin des années 70 ou le début des années 80 et qui possède une boite à rythme et quelques effets. Pas de schémas disponibles nul part sur internet, du coup, j’ai fait de mon mieux pour deviner qui fait quoi.

One of my customer brought me many stuffs to repair : one analog multi-effect and three vintage analog synthesizer. So, I began with the analog multi-effect : an old Ibanez UE400. It’s a true analog multi-effect with flanger, chorus, overdrive and compression. The better part of this effect is that you can arrange the order of the effect like you want. Chorus then Flanger or Flanger then overdrive then chorus ? No problem, with the front panel, it’s easy to program (just a few knobs to turn). The inside is very beautiful with this orange PCB and all of these multicolor wires everywhere.

Un de mes clients m’a ramené plein de trucs à réparer : un multi-effet analogique et trois synthés analos vintage. Du coup, j’ai commencé avec le multi-effet analo : un vieux Ibanez UE400. Il s’agit d’un vrai multi-effet analogique avec un flanger, un chorus, un overdrive et un compresseur. Le meilleur truc de cet effet, c’est que l’on peut arranger l’ordre des effets comme bon vous semble. Vous voulez le chorus avant le flanger ou le flanger avant le chorus et l’overdrive ? Pas de problème, avec les boutons situés sur le ‘front panel’, c’est très facile de programmer ça. L’intérieur est très beau avec un PCB tout orange et plein de fils multicolores dans tous les sens.

A customer gave me this little seventies gem to check. He didn’t want me to repair it, he just wanted to know if it’s working or not. So I didn’t repair it. Sad. But here is some photos of the guts of this beautiful stompbox.

Un client m’a passé cette petite merveille des seventies à vérifier. Il ne voulait pas que je la répare, il voulait juste savoir si elle fonctionnait ou pas. Du coup, je ne l’ai pas réparé. Triste. En tout cas, voici des photos des entrailles de cette superbe pédale.

 One of my customer brought me an old ‘74 Big Muff π Crying Tone Pedal. Altough the name may let you sink it’s another fuzz/distorsion, it’s only a Wah-Wah pedal with multiple switches so you can use your pedal as a volume pedal or invert the sense of the foot pedal. You can see the Electro-Harmonix Ram’s Head logo on the top of the pedal.

Un de mes clients m’a amené une pédale de 1974, une Big Muff π Crying Tone Pedal. Bien que le nom puisse faire penser qu’il s’agit d’une fuzz/distorsion, c’est seulement une pédale wah-wah avec plusieurs interrupteurs pour pouvoir utiliser la pédale en tant que pédale de volume ou pour pouvoir inverser le sens de fonctionnement du pédalier. On peut voir le beau logo ‘Ram’s Head’ d’Electro-Harmonix sur le dessus de la pédale.
