If you’d like, can you share some info about a reptile you don’t often get an excuse to talk about? :D

I'd love to talk a bit about Gila monsters! I don't think I have on this blog before. :)

Gila monsters are probably the most well-known venomous lizards. And they're precious.

Unlike venomous snakes, their venom glands are located ata the base of their jaws, and the venom ducts don't go all the way up inside their teeth. Instead, they have teeny blood vessels inside their lower teeth that propel the venom out through grooves in their teeth.

Check out this setup. That is so cool!

They're also a rare example of a venomous reptile who most modern herpetologists agree evolved their venom for defensive use, not for hunting! Their venom isn't fatal to healthy people, and it's not really useful with their prey since they eat a lot of small mammals and eggs, but it is allegedly extremely painful.

I've never met anyone who's been bitten by one, because that's genuinely a hard thing to accomplish. They're reluctant to bite and they'll give you ample warning by opening their mouth and hissing first. The few times I've interacted with them they've been so slow and polite in disposition that it made me feel a little silly wearing protective equipment.

Their distinctive bumpy scale texture isn't just the scales - they actually have teeny little bony deposits, called osteoderms, that fill out those bumps. This is great for extra protection!

Cool, right?

Their venom has proven to be really great when used as an ingredient in drugs made to treat some types of diabetes. Awesome!

I cannot independently verify the authenticity of this well-known quotation, but I want to leave this with one of the funniest things I have ever read. Supposedly written by a Dr. Ward for the Arizona Graphic in 1899:

"I have never been called to attend a case of Gila monster bite, and I don't want to be. I think a man who is fool enough to get bitten by a Gila monster ought to die. The creature is so sluggish and slow of movement that the victim of its bite is compelled to help largely in order to get bitten."

Heya! Its been a minute but now that I see Ponti-saurus Rex on my dash, I gotta ask (because memory of goldfish and can't remember) Does he shed his skin like some reptiles do? And if so, is he soft and squishy afterwards for a while?

i have HELLA lore on Ponti shedding for some reason so imma talk abt it why not YEAH he sheds about once every other month and it comes off in flakes that he just eats most of the time. He usually takes shed baths and gets all the dead skin off there (which Abby regretfully joins him rarely lmfao hence this ancient pic:)

but sometimes Abby helps him pick off shed in hard to reach places, and after he sheds he gets super shiny and even iridescent which i did an ass job when i tried to show that in these but first pic is probably right before he starts shedding and the 2nd is like the day after:

so especially around his neck, tummy, and more tender spots he kinda has a rainbow sheen WHICH plays into his whole mating call thing that he does with his throat but I'll get into that in a min bc fuck it this gonna be a Ponti info dump post 🤠

so anyway he gets super moody and irritable right before and during (kind of like a period tbh AHA) and depending on how healthy he is he can really shine, which I'm sure nowadays he's the shiniest he's ever been; but when he was a kid, hitting puberty, and also being under immense stress literally all the time he was super flakey and pale most of the time

so he was kinda always in a constant state of anxiety shedding pfft but now his cycles are pretty set in stone the whole once every other month thing sO circling back to the shiny on his neck it's basically like the way an alligator does a mating call ie. from my blog lost to time:

Welp- made this blog to pretty much info dump lore about my ocs and the AU they exist in so here goes! Under a readmore cause yeah its gonna be a lot.

This here is Liam with their two wasp moms (based off a Warrior Wasp and (once I remembered the correct species) a Emerald Cockroach Wasp) Vera and Gemma.

They found them in a torn into (ripped apart by a kajiu sized lizard that ate all but one human- aka a 10 yr old Liam) underground bunker that humans made as a last resort after their version of the apocalypse turned all the reptiles, amphibians, and birds into gigantic, very hungry, monstrosities. Mammals remained pretty much normal.

Whereas most arthropods became more humanoid (they mutated human like lungs!) and human sized! Plants also became ridiculously massive.

There's still the usual places like Ice Kingdom, Candy Kingdom (which doesn't get along with certain bugs), ect but they look different from the usual. The other usual characters also exist!

Anyways, Wasp moms also find a beetle egg scattered among the wreckage and adopt that as well, it eventually hatching into baby grub Jake. It takes a while for insect eggs to hatch in their world compared to the quick hatching eggs on regular Earth. Their mutation also makes them live waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer!

Jake finally hatches when Liam was 20, and pupates into his beetle body when they were 25. And then 5 years later is the time around their moms found an abandoned baby Finn! (Vera, Gemma and Liam are pretty much the equivalent of Joshua, Margaret and Jermaine but also very different from them)

Liam's put in charge of taking care of the two when they're 30 and also are tasked with being apart of a scouting group. Jake and Finn insisted on going with their older sibling despite the dismay of their moms. Cause they need to find a new suitable home after yet another giant creature damages the "city"/hive that they all lived in while the others collect what was left of their homes to relocate.

Little Trivia time™

Liam dyes their hair with unique plants that grew around their original city hive! Their hair goes back to the brown coloration after a really long while.

Their world's apocalypse was an sudden explosion of golden light erupting from the Earth during the war. The area of the massive crater was is now a slowly solidifying sea of gold. The gigantic creatures congregate near its shores.

Jake's original beetle family is still alive somewhere out in the world.

Liam and (some of) Jake's family were devoured by the same lizard that favors the taste of humans.

Almost all the gigantic monstrosities have golden eyes.

Liam's soul is strange and wasn't supposed to be reincarnated as a human if at all.

This oddity cause them to be a cosmic candidate.

17 years old. The Zaza lord himself! Friendly and very chill, though has a dark sense of humor. Loves photography, gardening plants, and cultivating mushrooms. (The normal kind, surprisingly enough) He, Kim and Aubrey are now dating.

Hero 📖

19 years old. Very arrogant and a bit of jerk, though cares for his friends deep down. Is extremely nerdy and a prodigy like his girlfriend Mari, who he is deeply in love with. Barely gets along with Kel.

Kel 🏀

17 years old. Huge inferiority complex and is very angry and bitter, especially at his parents and Hero. Spends most of his time outside exercising and playing basketball. Has very low self esteem and acts like a tsundere to everyone, especially Sunny, who he is dating.

Mincy 🖌️

16 years old. Very shy but in the mean way. Very closed off to most people except for Kel and Cris. Is an amazing artist and sewer, designs her own clothes and dresses. Heavily distrusts the government, and can be very lazy. She is dating Cris.

Kim 🦖

17 years old. A little shy, but intermixed with a kind heart and huge love for dinosaurs, avians and reptiles. Is a huge nerd and also a straight A student. Doesn’t like church that much, but still visits for Aubrey’s sake. Is dating Aubrey and Basil.

Cris 🦈

17 years old. Stand-offish and mysterious, she is very popular in school, and has a lot of fans. Is a great swimmer and loves the ocean… especially the deep sea. Is good friends with Kel and Sunny, though bickers with the former. She is dating Mincy.
