This is a great reminder since I live next to the largest reservation in Washington State. I already try to be mindful, but it's the little things in language that you don't even realize you're doing that you need to wake up to. As for the sports teams, I've thought they needed to be changed a long time ago. I have so many people call me and ask if I make tipis. I am certainly capable of making them, sure, but I feel it's totally disrespectful of the culture for me to do that. So I always say no. Reposted from @chayladay A few years ago, I removed three kinds of language from my vocabulary. 1. I stopped saying “hey guys” when women were present, stopped calling women girls, and paid extra attention to people’s pronouns. 2. I stopped using vocabulary that undermined mental health issues, eliminating words such as crazy, insane, nuts. 3. I stopped saying “I’ve finally found my tribe” or following the trend to call something my “spirit animal.” Was it hard to make these changes? No. It wasn’t hard. Above is a helpful guide for removing language that is anti-indigenous. I recommend educating yourself on gender and mental health language too. And I’m going to continue to comb through my vocabulary to make sure I’m not using other problematic language. “Words, words words,” as Shakespeare said. They really do matter. Tickseeds is in full bloom!!!!!! Tickseeds has been used by Navajo as a way to protect against lightening poison and as ceremonial lotion. The Navajo also used this plant in conjunction with other plants to aid with swelling and strains. Zuni women would boil it, producing a red liquid that was ingested to ensure female children. Given that today marks Europe’s colonization of “Canada”, Northern Turtle Island, I felt it was important to highlight a plant most commonly used by Indigenous People. Ok. So, a local shop is selling this “toy”. Not only are they selling it, but they are removing comments asking them to rethink highlighting it. The lady who commented is correct that were this a toy featuring the cliched physical aspects of another race, people would be pissed. So, why is it acceptable to show racist and insulting things when it comes to Indigenous people? To Native people the drum is a spiritual tool. Drums are sacred and treated with respect by anyone who goes near them. Many groups bless and name their drums in special ceremonies. Some things are better left in the past, not forgotten because then nothing will be learned, but highlighting “toys” like this is wrong. To remove comments by Indigenous people asking that displaying things like this is wrong. Others don’t get to decide what a certain race of people finds offensive and there are some quite beautiful old pieces that show the beauty and dignity of Indigenous people. This is not one of those pieces. #indigenous #NativeAmerican #tintoys #racisttoys #respectindigenouspeople #educateyourself https://www.instagram.com/p/CQq0GgUH2np/?utm_medium=tumblr

This isn't an issue you hear much about, but it means alot to me Despite what we heard from the media, the DAPL had no intention of being halted and is near completion. Shame on you, American government, you never change; you continuously screw over indigenous people. Today members of the Standing Rock community are marching in DC for indigenous rights, and i fully support them and stand with them in solidarity 💕 #artofinstagram #yetiparade #drawing #dibujando #zeichnung #sketch #sketchbook #dailydrawing #atxartist #nodapl #standwithstandingrock #nomorepipelines #respectindigenouspeople #seriouslystopbeingadick
