hi maybe this is a little silly but i would like to go to bars and meet people but i don’t have a lot of money and i don’t really like alcohol. my parents also don’t drink and so i don’t know how to act in such an environment (my autism loves scripts). my question is how do bars work essentially?
Every bar is a little bit different, that can be part of what makes them so challenging. I recommend following the r/bartenders subreddit for research -- there have been threads on there from Autistic people who want to know how to script a bar interaction, so dig around! I still use that subreddit to learn more about which drinks I can order in which places and what kinds of behaviors get on bartenders nerves. It is a fast-paced, stressful line of work with thin margins of success and it helps for you as a customer to understand that so that you don't take any impatience or shortness from your bartender personally.
I would recommend you start by visiting a bar on your own in the late afternoon on a weekday, as it's unlikely to be crowded and so everyone will be a lot more patient and chatty with you than they would be during a rush. A bar in a quiet neighborhood is probably better than one in a high-traffic area -- something not too fancy, but also not a hole in the wall that hasn't changed a single feature in 80 years (as those tend to operate by their own highly specific logic and have a ton of highly particular regulars and an owner who might be an eccentric crank). In the US, we have a lot of fakey-looking irish brewpubs with simple food and uncomplicated drinks, and those are often a really unpretentious place to visit for a newbie. The menu is simple and the bartenders aren't mixing fancy cocktails there, so there's generally a pretty relaxed vibe and no expectation that you spend a huge amount of money. You can research the menu online or walk past the place to scope it out before going.
Show up to the bar at your weekday afternoon with something to do, like a book to read, a game to idly play on your phone, or perhaps with the intention of watching sports or whatever on the bar's TVs. That will help you feel less anxious. Many bars also have trivia or karaoke on weekdays, which you *may* find enjoyable to participate in or watch or you might find it too loud and disruptive. Up to you what you want to try first.
Sit yourself at the bar and face toward the bartender with a slightly expectant but patient expression. Looking up and forward toward the bar and bartender is how you signal that you want a drink. Usually if it's not busy they will approach you first, so this part should be pretty easy. You can order something simple and non-alcoholic for yourself like a Sprite, a Coke, an iced tea, or maybe a non-alcoholic beer or seltzer. (If you were at a fancier cocktail bar, you could ask for a mocktail of some kind, which can be fun! but I would wait to do that and stick to a really simple drink at a simple bar to start).
Unlike with ordering a restaurant meal, a bartender will *typically* expect payment at the time that you receive your first drink. There are some exceptions to this, especially if a bar is not busy at all, but generally you can expect the bartender to tell you the price of the drink when they deliver it to you. You can then pay either in cash, or by giving the bartender a card -- if you give the bartender a card, they will ask you if you wish to keep your tab "open or closed." An open tab means they will not charge you yet, but rather keep your card on file and add up your total as you continue to order drinks, and only charge you when you ask to "cash out". If you "close" your tab, then the bartender will run the card, give it back to you, and likely ask you to sign a receipt. Then if you want another drink you'll have to do the whole thing again. Keeping a tab open is preferable if you wish to stay for multiple hours, in which case you should have multiple drinks.
Regardless of how you pay your tab, you should tip when you receive your drink if at all possible. (again I am operating from US rules). The rule of thumb is 1-2 dollars in tip per drink. If you are ordering something cheap like an iced tea, I recommend tipping generously. Bartenders will be happy with you if you tip well. Try to remember to bring cash for this, because then they don't have to wonder about what you put down on a signed receipt. I recommend ordering at least one drink per hour, or ordering a new beverage every time your last one is drained, whatever comes first. This "pays" for your seat and keeps the bartender happy and not worried that he's going to be yelled at by his boss for not making enough sales.
Generally speaking bartenders LOVE sober customers. You might not be buying a ton in drinks but you are likely gonna be respectful, not get in their way, not be demanding, and not make a mess of yourself. Just make sure you are not taking up a ton of space that paying customers getting higher-ticket items might want -- don't take up multiple seats, or claim a whole table for just you if the place is full, and don't sit around not ordering anything if there is a wait to get into the place. Again, you're starting with a weekday evening so unlikely to be an issue.
Enjoy your drink and the atmosphere, as well as your book/whatever is on the tv/perhaps light conversation with the people around you! The bartender will make it clear if they are open to conversation. Some will ask you directly about yourself or your day, or make little comments between you and other customers -- some will keep to themselves. Just return the energy. If they are chatty, be polite and talk back to whatever extent you feel comfortable. If they keep to themselves, read your book/watch the tvs and just chill. Other people sitting at the bar may try to talk to you -- this is pretty normal. Feel free to engage if that is what you want to do. Most people who are drinking alone and chatty at the bar are not gonna be judgemental. They love a weird autistic person who will listen to them. This can either be super fun or annoying depending on your own social battery and curiosity about the human condition. I recommend trying to engage though! You'll learn some things!
once your time is up, you ask the bartender to "can I cash out?", pay your bill, leave a final tip if you haven't settled yet (again at least a dollar per drink! ideally more!) and then head on your way.
After you have had this basic bar experience you can challenge yourself by going out on weekend day or evening, attending a bar during an event (like an open mic or a trivia night or drag show). It will be louder and more stressful but people are also more outgoing and fun to watch. Try to quiet your own social anxiety enough to sit back and observe and interact with people who respectfully try to crack a joke or acknowledge you. It's all very surface level stuff usually, it's great low-stakes socializing practice.
After you get more comfy with visiting these types of casual bars on busy nights, you can probably handle visiting a fancy cocktail bar or a raucous dive. A cocktail bar will have a far more elaborate menu and will make more complicated drinks -- you can order something off the menu or, if it's not too busy, ask the bartender to make you something non-alcoholic (tell them you want something with juice, or that you like sweet things, or soda & bitters, or just ask for a Shirley Temple). Dive bars have a VERY limited menu and sling drinks fast so you'll be back to your usual coke or club soda there. People will be a lot more chatty and drunk at the dive bar, and it can be a little intimidating if you are quiet and shy...but the people at those spaces are great at breaking the ice. some will be weirdos. this is not a bad thing necessarily.
okay i wrote a whole lot more about this than i intended to but this is a topic i have a lot of interest in. i have had to carefully study how these spaces work over the years and have googled "what kind of drink can i order that wont make a bartender mad at me*" so many times so i might as well pass on the knowledge.
*do not order a complicated drink at a bar that is not fancy. that's the short version of the rule. typically, any drink that has more than two ingredients is "fancy" and not all bars will be able to make it. A whiskey and coke? Anybody can do that. Screwdriver (vodka orange juice?) no problem. A Negroni? you WILL get an eye roll for asking for that at a packed gay club where everybody else is sucking down vodka seltzers. If you ask for a mojito anywhere the bartenders will all hate you. i dont know why i just know it's a thing. certain drinks have certain associations with them that are good to keep in mind, like Long Islands being for young drunk messes. You do not drink alcohol so you do not need to worry about most of this. you can expect your average bar of any tier to have orange juice, cranberry juice, maybe pineapple juice, coke, diet coke, sprite, iced tea, seltzer, and ginger ale, so you can always order any one of those.

My waiting room is a mall with an infinite number of stores. The mall is located on a beach in a world completely devoid of humans and animals. It has moderate weather and never experiences any intense storms. There are maps throughout the mall and I am able to add or change anything about the mall from there.
There is a speaker system that plays music throughout the mall and I am able to change it from my phone or the mall maps. It can play any playlist I have created or “my mix” which includes every song I like and some songs I don't know but would also like. It always plays a song I would want to hear at that moment. The mixes can also be based on people from other realities.
⋆.˚ ᡣ𐭩 -- Things I Scripted
I am immortal in this reality and stop physically aging somewhere in my late 20s/early 30s
There is a small self driving train on every floor. If I am ever lost or just don't want to walk I can call it with my phone or at a map and it will take me where I want to go
Anything I order online immediately appears next to me. I can order anything from any reality
Electronics are always fully charged and have amazing internet connection and speed
Nothing within the mall ever breaks or gets lost
It decorates itself for different holidays and seasons. The plants will change to one's that fit the season best
There is a store where I can call anyone from any reality at any point in the timeline. I can also invite them to my wr for a bit
There is a movie theater where I can rewatch memories or "what if" scenarios about my drs
The food court has a bunch of my favorite restaurants and a pick up section where I can order anything I want, even recipes I see online
There is a pool area that's essentially a mini water park and takes up a majority of the downstairs

do you have any tips on writing an au? normal fics i can usually handle but i’m working on a kunichuu grease au and i’m finding it quite difficult.

ill be using splinters as my example here purely because thats closer to what you're trying to do (movie/musical as reference)
this is going to be long as fuck because i tend to ramble and go into detail, so im adding a read-more. i sincerely hope this helps because i know its a LOT (potential spoilers for splinters included)
1. The Foundation
when i first started working on splinters, it started with a lot of idea bouncing. who would suit what role? why would that role work for them? originally, i had looked at dazai as jd and chuuya as veronica, or dazai as veronica with fyodor as his jd.
then, i also started thinking about story 'beats'. to be clear about what that means, i like to think of different parts/scenes that i need/want to hit, and kind of the order if possible. this usually intertwines with the original story-- in your case, grease.
all this starts falling into the next step:
2. Research
it may not be entirely apparent, but i did (and still do) a FUCK TON of research for splinters. by choosing to have multiple source materials to base your work off (both bsd AND grease), depending on how close/accurate you want to be, you're going to want to get in touch with the material.
you've mentioned grease-- i'm assuming you're doing this based off the movie (love the movie. need to rewatch). what i personally do with heathers the movie is that i watched it the entire way through first to refresh myself with the material. it might help you to take notes about different characters, ideas, plot lines. i found a copy of both scripts online in case i wanted to see about throwing an iconic line in during an important scene without diving through the whole movie to find it.
i dont know HOW historically accurate you want to go with your fic--you may be choosing to explore the concept of grease rather than the actual setting itself-- but grease takes place in the late 50s, TECHNICALLY early 60s (movie itself came out in the late 70s) (my mom LOVED it when it came out). so, you may want to do some basic research: fashions/trends of the time (this has gotten harder to search online, you may want to even run to the library and find some books if possible)? societal norms? what did normal teens do during that time? did they have arcades, did they go to restaurants, what was the average place they hung out at?
a lot of times, i have to double-check if some of the stuff in splinters is period accurate. each decade has different lingo, slang, and general information that was normal during it. hell, looking back at the 2010s versus 2020s, if you were to write a story during, saying, 2011, and have your characters saying "slay" and "yas queen" and "road work ahead, uh yeah i sure hope it does", i regret to inform you that that will NOT be accurate, as those phrases are more late 2010s + that vine came out in 2016. now, could you quote/potentially reference these things? absolutely! but you have to be more strategic about it.
ALSO. look up fun trivia about your source material! you know where i got my title from? its the english translation of the italian name for heathers. im not even kidding. also, mix and match material! hell, even throw references in to other material! i had my mean girls reference in there! because its bsd, i like to throw in authors i like from time to time where they fit!
another silly one: what music came out around that time, playing on the radio? HOW did they listen to music? i specifically listen to a 1989 top hits playlist when im trying to figure out what songs might be playing on the radio while my characters are driving-- and even THEN i still will look up specifically when that song came out, because i made the choice to be horribly specific with my timeline.
on that note:
3. If you can, DON'T SET A SPECIFIC MONTH/DAY/ETC.
i made my choices. do i regret them? YES. is it still fun to work with? absolutely, but also the heathers timeline is lowkey a mess and you could simultaneously claim it takes place in 2 months or several.
honestly, avoid specifics. having to keep track of a timeline is an absolute bitch, and it's going to make your life a lot harder, because then, you HAVE to make sure it all matches up. if i say that kunikida went and got his glasses in march, i cant say that his glasses are brand new in may (this is a hypothetical example).
timelines suck. unless you think you can dedicate the time and energy to keeping with one, don't do it.
4. OUTLINES.
i've been writing fanfics for years, which is wild to me. i was writing fanfics in single digits (didn't even know what fanfics were). one thing that i have especially found useful with splinters is to make outlines for where you want the story to go.
let me break it down for you:
you're gonna have MULTIPLE outlines, and they are NOT set in stone. they are guidelines for you to use so that you're not sitting there going "shit i don't know what to do next". they may be scenes you want to have in the fic. they may be important plot points. they may be absolutely stupid shit that youre like "if i dont get this in here i will cry" (diarrheazai is a threat that i intend to keep)
FIRSTLY. try making a general outline for your whole fic. you don't need super specifics, but think of what events occur during grease. in it, danny and sandy meet in the summer before their senior year. sandy meets and joins the pink ladies. there's a dance competition. danny and sandy fly off in a car into the sunset. etc. TO BE CLEAR, you don't have to keep all the details! it is your story, and what you want to do with it! having that structure can be helpful when you start though.
THEN. once you have that general outline? start trying to plan out chapters. you dont have to make outlines for them all at once. more often than not, i'll sit there before i start a new chapter just trying to outline what'll happen in it. this helps a LOT on multiple levels. i'll provide an example of what that can look like below (SPOILERS IF YOU'RE NOT UP-TO-DATE WITH SPLINTERS):
(the blacked out bit is spoilers, everything else should be clear to see)
a quick explanation: i dedicate a small document to outlines for each chapter. as you can see, with chapter beats, i have diff things i want to try to hit. the stuff highlighted in green is stuff that i come back post-chapter to confirm i hit. sometimes, if it's not EXACTLY in there, i'll leave a note in bold (ex: WAS MENTIONED).
but you can kind of see what im talking about here. i have some things that im trying to knock out per chapter.
other things in my doc to outline:
yes i talk to myself in my notes.
i highlight different scenes according to their relevance to certain characters sometimes; i add scenes in where i need to, and then ofc as you see ill go into detail about specific scenes. and AGAIN these are not set in stone. for example:
as you can see, shit changes over time. that boiler room make-out scene during the homecoming pep rally appeared in ch 11. i did not make this sequence fyodor's pov.
sometimes? i just dont have the time or energy to write shit/dont think its relevant to the plot. good bye, corn maze. you'll be remembered in my thoughts and my outline
also try to have fun while outlining. it doesnt need to be something serious. literally my outlines are a mix of dialogue, scenes, my own thoughts, etc. get silly with it. this is supposed to be fun and enjoyable!
ANOTHER THING:
5. LOOP SOMEONE INTO OBSESSING OVER THIS WITH YOU.
i was inspired by ardeidae to write splinters, and i have successfully trapped them in splinters world for almost an entire year now. by both of us loving it, we can keep ourselves focused on it.
what also helps is bouncing ideas off other people. me and lu have had conversation after conversation after conversation about different plot lines, scenes, etc. sometimes, i don't know what to do and i will ask lu (or other people) for advice about the progression.
you may have also heard of the engineering rubber duck method. if you're unfamiliar, engineers will sit there with a rubber ducky by them and talk to it about what they're working on until they figure out what they need to do. sometimes, just ranting about the fic is enough to help you spawn ideas about what to do next.
OH also
6. If you do end up making a timeline? Have a calendar on hand.
this is no longer 100% accurate to the progression of splinters and the chapters, but it helped a LOT. laying it out like this can make one hell of a difference. im a visual person, so doing this helped. also, can help you keep track of holidays and shit. if you want to give your characters a day off from classes, check a school calendar for holidays. be like "uhhhherrrr yeah they're taking, uhhhh veteran's day off" yk
7. Write, but don't force it.
splinters doesn't have an actual updating schedule because i work on it at my own pace, and update once i finish a chapter. now, i usually finish chapters after a month, but i don't say it updates on x day. don't box yourself in unless you truly think you can handle it. some people are very good about schedules. i am horrible at them, bc ykw? LIFE HAPPENS.
when im in the mood, i write. i will sit for HOURS and just write. grab some snacks, maybe pop on some music, get a buddy to sit with you, but just go for it. sometimes, i'll pull a 25-10 method-- 25 minutes of writing with ten minutes of relaxing and bullshitting--and that helps me not burn out as quickly. but honestly, you cant always brute force it.
have i had to brute force it sometimes? yes. you will get stuck. it naturally happens. sometimes, a scene fucking sucks and you're like "i hate this scene but it HAS to be in there" (if it doesnt fuck that shit. throw it out. blegh) sometimes, you need to mix things up to make it more appealing to you, because i am of the belief that the readers can tell when you're not invested in a scene. if im writing a scene and its going slowly and i just want to get it done? the quality's going to go down, and i KNOW it. so, i evaluate. what do i need to do for this scene to work? can i add something to help? do i need to just rewrite the bastard and call it a day?
and sometimes? you can just go ahead and put a little "<'scene'>" in and move on. depending on how much your fic relies on that scene, that won't always work, but sometimes, you just gotta leave it and come back to it. you can also do that with certain dialogue/details. if you're trying to get your characters from point A to point B, don't shove them there if they run out of gas. make a detour, and see what happens.

Incloming rant and a thought about MattPatt, his theories, and 5 Nights At Freddy's:
I want to preface this by saying that I have nothing against MattPatt, he seems like a cool dude, a swell guy even, he obviously has fun, and a lot of his ideas are creative and entertaining.
I also want to point out that this is not being said "now that he's retired", I have come into the fandom very late (only really got into it due to wanting to go see the movie cuz the Jim Hensen company made the animatronics and I am an autistic slut for physical props and effects. If I'd been in the fandom earlier, this may have come up before his retirement.

So MattPatt's first FNAF theory was that the game was referencing a real life shooting that happened at a Chuck E Cheese.
And I literally cannot let that go.
I realise that the internet in general was very different back then, it was more "edgy", I was like 20 at the time, so I was online and I know how the internet was. Im p sure I was on tumblr where shit like that was very common.
But it makes me see MattPatt's theories, all of them, in the light of "this is a man who played a jumpscare video game obviously based on Chuck E Cheese as a concept (tho I'm p sure in like the 70s-80s animatronic restaurants were a big thing and considering Scott's age it wouldn't be surprising if he'd gone to a few for fun/parties/family outings) and went "ah yes this is referencing a real life mass shooting."
Maybe it's cuz I'm not American, maybe y'all are a lil more comfortable with mass shootings than I am (im Australian, we've had maybe 3 since 2000) but that not only seems like a massive reach, it also feels really disrespectful.
I know that MattPatt was very "respectful" in the video and said he didn't want to make light of the event or joke about it but I feel like just making this video to begin with did that.
Videos aren't something that just appear out of the ether with no way to control what it says: he thought it up, sat down, wrote a script, filmed, ans edited it, and never once went "Oh wait I'm making light of an actual tragedy where people actually died maybe I shouldn't put this out"?
Like even if you have no other ideas, just say that? Just be like "wow this is a doozy, guys, let's break down the game play and maybe reference the event but not make a full video about it"?
But let's say that MattPatt was correct and that Scott was referencing a real mass murder that killed real people with jumpscare animatronics: that's a shitty game. That's a shitty idea for a game.
I mean I'm probably going to get people coming at me like "You're too sensetive" "you're reading too much into it" or "you never heard of true crime?" To which I answer, in order, "yes I am very sensitive it's unfortunately who I am as a person I spent too much of my childhood trying not to be and it really hurt me and decimated my mental health. So fuck off", "FNAF fandom is literally 'there is no limit to how deep you can read into it' that's why it's so popular and why there are so many ideas on what it's really about", and "yes I know about true crime, I also have an issue with some true crime, generally those who make light of horrible things and also my general rule of thumb is "if the parents/children/significant other of the victim(s) are still alive and could see your media, maybe don't make it." I mean an average of 50 years is about what I'm comfortable with if it's being used in the "true crime" space. But that does have exceptions based on why it's being talked about. But I think that's another rant."
What I'm trying to say is that I have trouble with MattPatt, and his theories in general, not because of "Gregory is a robot recreation of the Crying Child" (cuz that's fun and interesting and also is actually understandable if u look at the mimic???) But because he likened FNAF, which at the time was a silly lil indie game about animatronic animals (that are possessed by children but rarely actually talk about it) to a real murder spree.
He compared a digital bear, chicken, bunny, and fox, to real people who lost their lives.
And that makes me look at everything he does, even now when it's been like 9 years, and he's definitely grown and changed and maybe even apologised for that, in that lense.
He's like 37 now, meaning that he was 28 at the time. It's not like he was an edgy teen with no understanding of how his actions impact others.
I realise this looks like I hate him, that I'm holding his past mistakes against him, and I want to confirm: I don't hate him, he's entertaining to watch and I'm sad hes not doing theories any more,
But at the same time, I wish he'd not have made that one video and I can't not think about it with every theory he puts out. It's why I can't watch his other channels (also I looked at style theory & some of the ideas seemed lazy to me but that's my own bias) because it has poisoned his ideas slightly in my mind and I'm now very wary of what he's saying.

I will add that I have a similar problem with a fair few theoriest were they're like "I've solved this" and then shill out for a very obvious scam company or a company like BetterHelp or HelloFresh months after we all found out they were trash so it's not like they had a few more contract obligations. It's like "I realise that you need to make money, but you're actively promoting harmful stuff in an Advert (at least it's labelled as that) and it makes me feel like I can't trust your judgement on things."

Anyway, please don't hate on me, this is just something I've been struggling with for a few months now and I'm curious to see if anyone else thinks the same or had any helpful thoughts they would like to share.
Also if MattPatt has apologised for it, please let me know where I can watch/read it cuz part of me feels like if I see him acknowledge that it was probs not a great thing to do, it probs won't feel so weird about it anymore.
It's like our parents always said: we need to be careful of what we put online cuz it could follow us forever.
