The last day of the Faire, the sky was overcast, with rumbles of thunder in the far distance. As Mayor Nat stepped up to the podium set up in front of town hall, a small crowd gathered to hear the announcement. She proceeded to declare Pandora Flowers as the winner of the costume contest, and withdrew the sword to present to the winner of the tournament, Morgan Vovk.

Before she could, though, Quinn Buckley from the commune ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from the podium.

“Listen! You have to listen. This, all of this, is because of a being far greater than us! It sent the creatures from the woods to test us! To separate the weak from the strong. It judges us because it wants us to be ready before it reveals itself. We have to listen! We have to—“

Sheriff Henry attempted to take the microphone from her, but she struggled against him, still shouting into the microphone.

“It’s real! I felt its presence! Those that listen will be saved!”

Thunder rumbled, closer than before, much closer. A loud crack of lightning illuminated the sky, blindingly bright. Beyond the clouds, briefly visible in that split second, loomed a shape, unrecognizable and massive, both bulbous and gangly. As quickly as it appeared it was gone, and what remained was the sizzling body of Tristan Wilde, struck by the lightning. The sky opened up, then, as thunder boomed directly above, and rain and hail pelted the town.

“It’s there! You all saw it! It’s real! We have to submit!” Quinn wailed, as Henry attempted to pull her off the stage. “I can prove it! I can walk amongst them untouched! I’ve been chosen! You can be chosen too!”

Her cries fell away in the deafening downpour, and those that had gathered scattered to find shelter in the nearest buildings. Whether or not they saw something or, if they did, if they believe what they saw, remains to be seen.

The storm raged on through the night, as the creatures wandered the streets unperturbed by the rain and hail. The lights of the town flickered and then, as lightning staggered across the sky, everything went dark.

(Those that ran to find shelter found themselves stuck for the night. Below you’ll find the (randomly selected) groups. You can choose for your characters to have seen the shape in the sky, to have not seen it, or to have seen it and not believe it.

FUSILS À POMPE SUR UN ADOLESCENT : UN GROUPE PRO-POLICE EN FAIT UN ÉCUSSON

Des unités anti-terroristes qui mettent en joue des adolescents au sol avec des armes longues pour les arrêter. Ce sont les images prises à Lille, jeudi 29 juin. Pascal Bonnière, le photographe de La Voix Du Nord, avait raconté cette scène extrêmement choquante. «C’est la panique. Ils mettent en joue. Les gamins sont au sol, ventre à terre, une arme pointée sur eux. C’est d’une violence inouïe, dans une situation qui était très calme. C’est terrifiant !» Quatre jeunes avaient été embarqués par les agents.

Tout le monde, en-dehors des personnes déjà mûres pour une dictature fasciste, avaient été effaré devant cette image d'unités militarisées contre des adolescents : pour la première fois, l’anti-terrorisme était déployé contre la population civile, contre des enfants de 14 ans.

Tout le monde, sauf les lobbies pro-police, qui ont trouvé ça génial. Le groupe «Thin blue line France» a transformé cette photo en écusson, pour permettre aux policiers d'en faire une fierté et de pouvoir l'arborer sur leurs uniformes.

Qu'est-ce que «Thin Blue Line» ? Le journaliste Ricardo Parreira explique que l'idée vient du monde anglo-saxon, et signifie «fine ligne bleue». C'est une image : cette fine ligne de la couleur des uniformes, c'est la police. La ligne bleue symbolise la séparation entre le bien et le mal, elle sépare l'ordre et le chaos, elle délimite la société des hordes de barbares qui la menacent. Sous-entendu : sans la ligne bleue, la société s'effondre.

C'est un discours régulièrement entendu dans la bouche de syndicalistes policiers : «sans nous, la République serait tombée», ou «nous sommes la première ligne». Eric Zemmour, invité par le syndicat Alliance, avait aussi déclaré : «Les policiers sont en première ligne des attaques de terroristes et de caïd», aux «premières loges d’un combat de civilisation». Le candidat pétainiste avait même osé : «Je veux que vous redeveniez les chasseurs, pas les gibiers». C'était durant la campagne présidentielle. Nous y sommes, Macron a appliqué ces idées.

La «Thin Blue Line» a d'abord été populaire au Royaume-Uni, aux États-Unis, puis au Canada, en Belgique et en Suisse au sein de l'extrême droite et de la police. Aux USA, la ligne bleue était présente dans les rassemblements d'extrême droite, ou chez les opposants au mouvement Black Lives Matter. La ligne est aussi utilisée pour commémorer un policier mort en service.

Ce symbole de ralliement est désormais utilisé par des forces de police françaises. Sur Instagram, un compte «Thin Blue Line France» cumule près de 28.000 abonné-es, souvent policiers. Le compte a évidemment relayé la cagnotte de soutien au tueur de Nahel et applaudi la répression des banlieues et des mouvements sociaux.

Le site vend des écussons : ACAB (All Cops Are Brothers), la tête-de-mort Punisher, le casque spartiate, la fleur de lys… Tout un imaginaire, parfois arboré directement sur les uniformes et mis en ligne.

Avec ce nouveau «patch», c'est la glorification de la violence armée sur des enfants, au lendemain de l'exécution du jeune Nahel, qui pourra être portée fièrement, demain, par les policiers et leurs soutiens.

pedro pascal + he/him + cis man – have you seen alejandro santos around long beach? the forty year old can be spotted at bandeja de josé during their free time. word around the city is that they’re protective and kind, yet, they can also be secretive and aloof, but you didn’t hear that from me. they’re currently a manager at groovy movies and have been in the city for forty years. when i think of them, i think of classic movies, reminiscing on the good ol’ days, and quoting his favorite movies. they’re typically seen walking the streets of long beach with a limited edition goonies vhs tape. let’s hope the city treats them well!

alejandro ruiz santos was born and raised in long beach, california on july 18th, 1953 as the only biological child of nathalia & ricardo santos.

growing up, the santos family has always been close, alejandro considering both of his parents his best friends. this all changed when his mother fell pregnant with his baby sister when he was only 4 years old though, they started neglecting him more and more and he felt like things would never be the same again. despite this, he was glad he was going to be a big brother and was counting down the days when he was going to be able to meet her, but that day never came.

on the day his sister was supposed to come, all he could remember was his father being pushed out of the hospital as he held his grandmother's hand and his mother's screams, his mother's screams still haunt him to this day and he can never look at her the same way again. he wasn't entirely sure what was happening then as he was just a kid, but now that he looked back on it, he realizes that his mother had lost the baby. his baby sister was gone.. and he was never going to be an older brother again.

for days the house was filled with nothing but grief and tragedy, his mother not wanting to leave her room at all to play with him or to even eat and his father had drowned himself in work so much that he almost barely saw him anymore. he thought it was going to be this way forever until his grandparents came home with an idea, showing his parents a website where they could adopt a child and a few months later, he was the older brother he had hoped he could be. despite his new sister and him not being blood related, he treated her as if she was the baby sister that never was and would do just about anything for her. she became his new best friend, finally giving his parents a break from him, and even played dress up with her often despite not being a big fan of it. things truly were looking up for once and he wasn't going to change a thing.

as the siblings grew older however, his little sister became more distant, as most teenagers do, and he started to miss his best friend. whenever she left him to go hang with her friends, he would always look out the window to see when she'd return and when she was hanging out with her boyfriend, he always made sure to give him a pep talk, in case he tried something. as a result, it only made the two of them become even more distant, and because of this, he decided to get a job. he started off as a regular employee at the groovy movies when the former manager had still been manager and made his way up the ranks the more he worked.

when his sister hung out with all of her friends at the video store, she made sure to constantly ignore him, as she had always thought he was embarrassing. the only people she would truly talk to were the other young employees at the video store, the ones a bit closer to her age, and his employees noticed this. they became his new closest friends, his second family if you will, and he even started hanging out with them after work, especially since he knew his sister had already grown tired of his ass.

a few years later after the former groovy movies manager decided to finally retire, he was promoted to manager himself, due to his determination and kindness towards employees and customers. now, he has been the manager at grooby movies for nearly two decades and he wouldn't change it for the world.

ABOUT

Ricardo grew up in Dallas, Texas to a working class family. His father was an engineer while his mother prided herself on being head of the PTA at his school. Something which Ric would have rather preferred her not to be, as it made for some highly embarrassing moments, especially when he attempted his rebel phase.

In high school, he was an avid swimmer and on the track team. Despite giving off an unbothered appearance, he actually did care about his grades and was able to earn himself a scholarship to Berkeley, California. He enrolled onto the Management, Entrepreneurship, & Technology Program in hopes of one day making a name for himself, and being responsible for some change in the world.

Similar to high school, he seemed unphased about academics whilst at college and would often be found passed out around and on campus benches or barely conscious in his lectures, after too many keg competitions the night before. He became known as the party king and if you ever even suggested a get together, he would be there and probably providing the booze.

He met his college sweetheart in his third year, and they both thought it was true love. She was the only one that could out drink him, so he decided he'd marry the girl one day. And it didn't take them long, because a year after graduation, they did.

During this point, they had settled down in Aurora Bay, California, after much deliberation on finding a town that was idyllic, and could provide safety any children they chose to have to grow and thrive.

He got a job interning alongside the local government, learning everything he could in hopes of one day potentially running for mayor — simply to be on top.

However, things took a different path when several years later he was offered the role of becoming the director of public services. He didn't necessarily care too much about the botanical gardens, the parks, museums, anything else that provided joy to the people — but the money was good, and it was a step in the right direction. He'd still have some power, and he could use it to his advantage.

He wasn't a good husband, and he'd have numerous affairs. There was a time when he'd been so in love with his wife, but as the years went on, he'd grown bored and her lack of enjoyment in their relationship mirrored his, and it got to a point where they were purely just co-existing together.

However, there was still a possessiveness there. When she began coming home late herself, as he did some nights, Ric would become jealous — knowing that she'd found company, other than his desolate one.

They would argue terribly, both accusing the other of cheating and when they'd finally reached some sort of conclusion, that yes, they were both as bad as each other, they decided to file for divorce the next day.

Although he knew this was for the best, he still was saddened by the wasted years and not having someone at home waiting for him, as toxic as they were. He fell into a depression of sorts, and he'd often choose to battle his demons with a bottle of whiskey at whichever bar was willing to serve him.

He moved in with his college roommate and best friend, Ben, at Crystal Cove Condominiums, and tried to carry on as though he wasn't affected by this transition into divorcee life. But he didn't do a very good job at hiding it.

He swore to Ben that he'd only be crashing in his spare room for a month while him and his ex-wife sold their house and he found somewhere new. He paid his own way, sharing in rent and bills.
