It wouldn't be farfetched to say they have one of the best kitchens in the city: brewpub or otherwise. We'll come back to the beer - which stands on it's own - but first let us give you a brief tour of the food menu which was inspired by the owners heritages (Mexican, Korean and Vietnamese). We were able to try some of thier favorites: Elotitos (elote inspired fried baby corn), Vietcoa Tacos (barbacoa and pho fusion - 🤤) , Korean Fried Chicken sandwich (fabulously juicy friend chicken thigh with gochujang sauce on a brioche bun) and for dessert we sampled an off menu R&D churros with dark lager caramel sauce. And if that wasn't enough it was also steak night: wagyu beef raised on spent CounterCommon grain on a farm in Richmond the steak was phenomenal. We really can't say enough good things about the food, but you come to our page for beer, so let's talk beer! We tried everything on tap and enjoyed it all. They definitely lean towards old school European styles: pils, kolsch, Oktoberfest, etc... and these were our favorites as well. Back on the Ale Trail: Will Beer Tourism Rebound After the Pandemic?

This month, we’re heading outdoors with the best drinks for the backyard, beach, and beyond. In Take It Outside, we’re exploring our favorite local spots and far-flung destinations that make summer the ultimate season for elevated drinking. 

When I reach Chris O’Leary, he’s on his way from New York City to Spokane, Wash., to take a beer trip with a pal he hasn’t seen since the before times. “I’m literally on a plane right now,” he texts. It’s hardly a surprise. Since 2011, O’Leary, a marketing executive who publishes the New York-focused beer blog Brew York, has visited 2,267 craft breweries around the world. Averaging between 250 and 350 breweries per year, O’Leary is one of the most well-traveled beer tourists in the world, and I’d called him to get his take on the post-pandemic future of ale trails, brew tours, and general beer-related travel as hopefully vaccinated Americans re-embrace their wanderlust this summer and beyond.

“[Breweries] are as busy now, if not busier, than I’ve ever seen them,” he says on a phone interview from SeaTac’s baggage claim. “People are just ready to get back out there.” If O’Leary is right, and beer tourism is coming back strong in a post-pandemic world, it’ll be good news for the breweries, travel companies, and other hospitality companies that rely on beer-focused travelers to spend cash in their communities. But everything has changed since we all went into lockdown last year, and the craft beer business was hardly exempt. As the country reopens and cooped-up Americans eagerly book long-delayed vacations, will breweries be on the itinerary?

‘Beer tourists spend quite a bit of money’

Before we look to the future, a brief jaunt through the recent past. As American craft beer’s volume growth has slowed in a more mature, crowded market over the past half-decade, beer tourism — a broad term typically defined as leisure travel primarily motivated by visiting breweries, beer festivals, and so forth — has mostly held steady. “What we saw prior to the pandemic, is that … beer tourism has been on the rise for quite a number of years,” says Neil Reid, a professor of geography and planning at the University of Toledo and the author of several papers on beer tourism.

Data from the Brewers Association, the industry’s largest trade association, roughly tracks with that. According to an annual survey conducted among craft beer drinkers, from 2015 through 2019 the percentage of respondents who said they’d visited at least one brewery while traveling rose steadily each year, from 45 percent to 53 percent. (Among weekly drinkers, those figures were higher.) Bart Watson, the BA’s chief economist, says that “experiential [beer] tourism is growing more in line with at-the-brewery sales” as opposed to overall craft beer sales volume. “Prior to 2020, [those] were still growing very, very strongly.”

Speaking of sales: The reason Watson and other industry observers pay attention to drinkers’ interest in beer tourism is because traditionally there’s big money to be made luring visitors to breweries. While there’s no comprehensive national study showing how much cash beer tourists spend each year, regional reviews indicate it can be substantial. In 2019, an independent analysis commissioned by the tourism board in Grand Rapids, Mich., found that beer tourists generated an economic impact of $38.5 million to the surrounding county — $23.9 million in money they spent on beers, restaurant meals, hotel rooms, and the like, plus another $14.6 million indirectly recirculated through the local economy.

“Beer tourists spend quite a bit of money,” Dr. Cristina Benton, director of market and industry analysis at Anderson Economic Group and the study’s author, told me in a recent phone interview. In examining the spending habits of beer-focused Grand Rapids visitors, Benton and her colleague Sara Bowers found that beer tourists spent an average of $1,060 per party per trip compared to $959 spent on average by other groups.

Reid, who shared a study from the Sonoma County Economic Development Board that found Russian River Brewing Company’s 2019 Pliny the Younger release generated a $4.16 million economic impact on its own, points out that in addition to being potentially powerful revenue drivers, beer tourism programs tend to be fairly low-effort and low-cost for those tourism boards that elect to create them. “It’s an extra webpage, it’s an extra couple brochures. … I think the cost of promotion is pretty small, and return on investment can be pretty high,” she said, especially when factoring in all the ancillary businesses that benefit from beer tourist spending. “There’s a lot of winners when you can attract those folks.”

Uneven impact

Of course, starting in spring 2020, those folks went into quarantine, and many brewery taprooms were forced to close for long stretches due to state restrictions on indoor service, concerns for staff safety, and the demands of new business models. Some took the opportunity to retool and expand existing outdoor setups, or build new ones. But on the whole, on-premise brewery sales decreased in 2020 compared to the year prior; the Brewers Association tracked a 25 percent dent in Q3 2020 figures alone. Beer festivals, another traditional draw for beer-thirsty travelers, were effectively kiboshed, cutting breweries off from a vital way to expand their customer bases.

All this worked out predictably poorly for event promoters, and for companies that focus on conventional, destination-based beer tourism. “Our company, like the travel industry in general, was devastated by the pandemic,” says Allan Wright, president and founder of Zephyr United, a Montana company that offers guided beer, wine, and culinary travel packages through its Taste Vacations division. (Another arm of the company also hosts a beer tourism conference, though the pandemic put it on hiatus both this year and last.) “Last year we canceled 21 out of 24 vacations on our schedule,” Wright says.

Covid-19 did destination-based beer tourism firms like Wright’s no favors. But contrary to what you might have expected, the BA’s data shows that brewery visits actually held steady, and may even have increased from 2019 to 2020. Watson cautions to take those figures with a grain of salt to account for respondents mischaracterizing their visits for to-go beers during the pandemic with more conventional beer tourism. But here, too, beer tourism infrastructure helped out, as many state guilds, regional tourism boards, and ale trail promoters shifted from pitching their constituent breweries as travel destinations to encouraging drinkers to patronize their retail operations.

“People came to pick up carry-out [orders] and support as many local breweries as possible,” says Patrick Fannin, the head brewer at Dreaming Creek Brewery in Richmond, Ky. The brewery, which had only been open for a year prior to the pandemic, is a stop on the Brewgrass Trail, a 20-brewery network in the greater Lexington area organized by Kentucky’s Department of Tourism. “The trail was a kind of [customers’] guide of which ones to go to,” Fannin surmises.

In eastern Pennsylvania, the Visit Bucks County tourism board used its social media handles to encourage visits to the 27 breweries on its ale trail from followers within driving distance. “The Bucks County Ale Trail was actively promoted during the pandemic, primarily over social media, as many of the breweries still sold beer to-go,” says Paul Bencivengo, the president and chief operating officer of Visit Bucks County.

This makes sense when you consider the nature of most beer tourism in the U.S. While marquee beer destinations like Denver, Asheville, and San Diego are strong enough draws to entice drinkers to make cross-country pilgrimages, says Reid, most beer tourists typically hail from within 150 miles or so of the breweries they’re visiting. “It’s basically a weekend trip,” he says.

Driving revenue

As Watson points out, local drinkers skipping the supermarket for the taproom to-go window isn’t beer tourism, certainly not in the sense that Reid and his colleagues define it. But there’s some evidence that actual beer tourism did persist during the pandemic. With U.S. air travel dropping as much as 60 percent in 2020, dedicated beer tourists itching for an approximated taproom experience took to the road instead. To wit: Brew York’s O’Leary estimates he still managed to visit about 220 breweries in 2020, just a slight deviation from his norm, mostly by car travel. “Most of it was road trips. … A lot of my planning was around where Covid-19 [case] numbers were the lowest,” he says.

For Harvest Hosts, a travel firm that rents RVs to members looking to camp at one of the 2,500+ breweries, wineries, and farms that the company has contracted with across the company, that tendency was a boon for business. “We have seen a massive increase (over 400 percent) in RVers visiting breweries since the pandemic started,” Joel Holland, the company’s CEO, says via email. Harvest Hosts counts 338 breweries in its hosting network; in 2020, Holland says, its customers spent more than $25 million at all the businesses that participate in its program.

The combined effect of increased local emphasis, new outdoor spaces, and a shift to road travel may have softened the pandemic’s impact on American beer tourism last year. “I think beer tourism held up better than we would have expected, and is probably poised to rebound,” says Watson. “These numbers suggest that the fundamental demand [for beer tourism] didn’t really go anywhere.”

A post-pandemic bounceback?

As vaccinations continue to rise across the country, the factors do seem favorable for beer tourism to return to something like its pre-pandemic benchmarks. For one thing, Americans are itching to travel. In a June 2021 survey, Destination Analysts, a travel market research firm, found that over 77 percent of Americans plan to travel for leisure in the next three months or so, and 90 percent of those trips will be overnighters. Harvest Hosts’ own survey, conducted at the top of the year, shows similar appetite, with 60 percent of respondents saying they’ll travel more than in 2019. Holland says the firm is seeing customers extend the lengths of their trips as restrictions lift, and that Americans’ slow return to international travel “bodes very well for road travel to wonderful small town breweries.” The company projects that its RV-mobilized travelers will spend upwards of $40 million at their host locations in 2021.

Wright, at Zephyr United, hoped the bounceback would lift destination-based beer tourism that requires air travel. So far, so good: “We not only are back to where we were before, we are well ahead of our numbers from 2019,” he says.

From his vantage point at the BA, Watson sees only a few potential headwinds for beer tourism. For one thing, it’s experience-driven hospitality, he points out, a discipline that may be tough for more production-oriented breweries to master. “People don’t go [to breweries] necessarily just to look at the shiny tanks, they go for the knowledge, for learning, for the experience … and that can be replicated in other beverage alcohol arenas,” he says. On that note, with craft distilleries across the country lobbying for expanded privileges to do tastings and on-site sales, and vineyards already very sophisticated on those counts, beverage-loving tourists have more options than ever at which to spend their travel dollars. Craft beer drinkers, Watson emphasizes, are nothing if not “omni-biborous”: that is, they like drinking craft beer, but like drinking everything else, too.

Still, those are not insurmountable challenges, and though Watson cautions that beer tourism may not bounce back all at once, he speculates its return may come with a welcome post-pandemic “wildcard” for breweries. “A whole bunch of breweries developed new ways of selling beer … with more to-go and delivery” options, he says. That hard-won pandemic expertise may enable breweries to leverage direct-to-consumer sales (in states where that’s legal) to maintain relationships with beer tourists who visit, vineyard-style. “I think it opens up new potential, you know when bigger markets have that, to increase beer tourism, and more importantly the follow-up sales from those visits,” Watson muses.

That remains to be seen, but more certain, for now, is that beer tourism is coming back in some capacity. As he grabs his suitcase in Seattle, I ask Chris O’Leary what advice he has to offer to anyone looking to begin their own march to 2,267 brewery visits this summer. “Look for the hidden gem beer towns,” he replies. “The big [beer tourism] destinations are probably going to be even busier than normal.”

Reeth to Richmond - 23 kms

Well, the rain finally caught up to us! After such a glorious week, who can really complain? We began our day in mist and as we walked, the sky darkened and threatened rain. We had just arrived at a small farm house where Elaine promised hot tea and scones (our only stop on this day) when it poured! Luckily, by the time we drained our cups, the sun was peaking through and we walked on relatively dry! Today’s walk from Reeth to Richmond was completely flat and we stopped to pick some sweet blackberries along the trail! Our home for the night is the town of Richmond - by far the largest town we pass through. (Old Brewery Guesthouse) We went for dinner at a local Italian restaurant where we ran into several table of ‘Coasters’ whom we have met on the trail. Clothes washed, tummy’s full, Sonia and I are currently sitting with our aching feet up . . . throb! throb! throb! Another beautiful day on the trail.

McLaren Vale

Why visit McLaren Vale: Come for the wine, stay for the food! Best known for Shiraz, McLaren Vale also produces Grenache and Cabernet. When you visit McLaren Vale, you can experience everything from high-end wines to everyday vinos to sip on. Mix your wine experience with some bites to complete your time there.

The wine produced here is globally known and loved by many.

Tamar Valley

Why visit Tamar Valley: Although Tasmania may not be the first place to go wine tasting in Australia, the Tamar Valley is a great place to stop if you are visiting to see the local wildlife. The Tamar Valley, along with the Coal River Valley and Richmond, is drier and warmer than southern Victoria. That being said, they offer a great sparkling wine that truly challenges Champagne from France.

Famous for: Tasmania is known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wine.

Getting there: You can visit the Tamar Valley on a day trip from Launceston or Cradle Mountain.

Mornington Peninsula

Coonawarra

Why visit Coonawarra: If you are a fan of Cabernet, Coonawarra is the place for you! The flat and fertile land of Coonawarra drew settlers into the area in the mid-1800s, who saw potential in the land and established the wine region. Coonawarra is popular not only for wine, but also sheep produce. Many sheep herders have migrated to the area for the lush land.

Famous for: Coonawarra is known as the king of Cabernet, but many other grape varietals are also found in this region, including Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Getting there: Coonawarra is about halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, so you can make a stop while driving the Great Ocean Road.

The Best Beers At This Year’s Great American Beer Festival

On Oct. 5, 2019, the Brewers Association (BA) announced the best beers from around the country at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver.

The event marked the 33rd edition of the professional beer competition, with 2,295 breweries competing. The event took place over three days, with 322 judges from 18 countries evaluating 9,497 entries, and awarding 318 medals, according to a press release.

“This year’s GABF competition was the largest and most competitive to date,” Chris Swersey, GABF competition manager, said. “The beers and talent were as impressive as ever, and we congratulate this year’s winners for their achievements in brewing.”

Like last year, the highest number of entries (348) were submitted in the Juicy or Hazy India Pale category. Following were American-Style India Pale Ale (342 entries), Fruited American-Style Sour Ale (215 entries), German-Style Pilsner (183 entries), and Imperial India Pale Ale (173 entries).

The winners of the top five most-entered categories are included below.

1. Foam Brewers (Burlington)

This BTV hot spot is a hop, skip, and a jump from Lake Champlain’s Waterfront Park, boasting Adirondacks views. Warm up inside as you sip your way through their rotating tap of double IPAs and unique brews. This season’s “weird beer” is called Fox in the Snow, and it’s eggnog-inspired, brewed with vanilla, and toasted with coconut and nutmeg.

HUNGRY? Duck into The Skinny Pancake next door for your choice of crêpe: sweet or savory. Might I suggest the Cattle Rancher? It includes braised local steak, Cabot cheddar, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, and a side of chipotle sour cream.

2. Zero Gravity (Burlington)

This hipster hangout is smack dab in the middle of Pine Street, which, if you ask me, is the coolest street in Burlington. You can spend all day eating, drinking, and shopping your way along it. But first, beer. Opt for Zero Gravity’s Conehead IPA and their pilsner, the Green State Lager.

HUNGRY? After enjoying Zero Gravity’s $2 bowls of bottomless popcorn and other snacks, visit The Great Northern directly next door for an excellent brunch. Or venture to August First on nearby Champlain Street, where The Vermonter is a favorite sandwich on their ample menu.

3. Switchback Brewing Company (Burlington)

Flynn Avenue, where Switchback sits tucked away, is another fun street to explore in the city’s downtown and is home to the Burton flagship store. But once you arrive at Switchback, you’ll want to stay awhile. Their classic Switchback IPA is a must, as is the Connector IPA. Ask the bartender to tell you the story behind this beer and to point you to the world’s tallest filing cabinet. No joke. The cabinet, created by a Vermont-based artist, sits a few hundred yards away from the brewery and is definitely a sight to see.

HUNGRY? Burlington’s famous co-op City Marketrecently opened a second location a few miles north of Switchback. Swing by for lunch from the hot bar and deli or just to peruse this community-owned grocery store’s local, fair-trade, B-corp certified, farmer-produced, you-get-the-picture aisles. This is also a great opportunity to grab some crusty bread and a selection of cheeses from their fabulous cheese department. Some of my favorites: Cabot Farmhouse Reserve Cheddar, Vermont Creamery Bonne Bouche, and Blythedale Farm Vermont Brie.

4. Frost Beer Works (Hinesburg)

This quaint little town (population: sub 5,000) is worth the trek for Frost Beer Works. Don’t leave without trying the Lush (a double IPA), the Shush (an IPA), Ponyboy (an IPA), and the Really Pale Ale (a blonde IPA). Take the chance to play pool in their newly expanded taproom.

HUNGRY? Stop in at Lantman’s Market, a charming little grocery store. Snag some Champlain Orchards apples, Cabot Cracker Cuts, and Castleton crackers to bring with you for snacking at Frost. I also can’t recommend the market at nearby Philo Ridge Farm enough for breakfast, lunch, and really great coffee to keep you fueled on the rest of your brew tour.

5. Stone Corral (Richmond)

This western-themed brewery started on a horse ranch in Huntington, Vermont. You’ll want to toss back their staples, like the Palomino Pale Ale, Trailblazer (a lager), and Bramble (a sour beer made with blackberries). Plus, make your way through their seasonal offerings, like the Wicked Bad Rooster (a double IPA) and the Heart Breaker (an imperial chocolate stout).

HUNGRY? Stone Corral has its own tasty menu. I recommend the tacos, Ole’ Reliable in particular. Nearby Sweet Simone’s in downtown Richmond is also well worth the visit for delicious pastries, cookies, pies, and tarts.

6. Lawson’s Finest Liquids (Waitsfield)

On a blustery winter weekend, there’s no place I’d rather be than this newly opened and gorgeously designed taproom. Watch the snow fall behind their large picture windows while you enjoy their famous Sip of Sunshine (a double IPA). Then, challenge your friends to foosball or chess by the roaring fireplace as you sample from the 12 other beers on tap.

HUNGRY? Visit the Cabot Farmers’ Store in Waterbury Center for endless cheese samples. Then, walk over to Lake Champlain Chocolates to snag some sweet treats. While you’re at it, visit Danforth Pewter for hand-crafted metal trinkets and the Smugglers’ Notch Distillery tasting room for some Vermont vodka.

7. Fiddlehead Brewing (Shelburne)

Try the classic Fiddlehead IPA, plus snag some cans of the Second Fiddle (a double IPA) in this standing-room-only brewery. You can also fill up a growler or growlette of your favorite brew to take next door to the wood-fired pizza joint.

HUNGRY? Step right into Folino’s, the aforementioned pizza spot, where I suggest you remember two words: buff chick. Since you’re in town, pop into Village Wine and Coffee for the best coffee around, or head to O Bread Bakery at Shelburne Farms for the flakiest chocolate croissants you’ve ever had.

8. Long Trail Brewing Co. (Bridgewater Corners)

Named for the 273-mile hiking trail that traverses through Vermont’s Green Mountains, Long Trail Brewing Co., perhaps unsurprisingly, sticks to a hiking theme for its brew names: Long Trail Ale, Trail Hopper IPA, and Green Blaze IPA. They’ve always got a large selection of new beers on tap, like their seasonal Hibernator and Base Layer brews, too.

HUNGRY? Warm up at their pub with the Long Trail Cheddar Ale Soup, made with Cabot Cheddar, carrots, leeks, and Long Trail Ale. You’re also just under an hour away from King Arthur Flour, in Norwich, Vermont. I’d highly recommend you head there to check out their bakery, cafe, and store. Every home baker and just plain baked-goods-eater will agree it’s worth thedetour.

9. The Alchemist (Stowe)

You’ll need a game plan for this trendy spot. Step 1: Show up in Stowe. Step 2: Head to The Alchemist. Step 3: Drink some beer. Step 4: Buy Heady Topper (a double IPA). Step 5: Add the Focal Banger (an IPA) to your order. Step 6: Grab yourself a piece of their creatively designed swag.

HUNGRY? Visit Doc Ponds for warm-up comfort foods like the Daily Soup in a Mug, the Doc Burger, and the Baked Mac & Cheese. Or head to The Roost, where you must try the Cheddar Burger, made with Vermont’s own Cabot cheese and a bun from local loaf-maker Mansfield Breadworks.

10. Hill Farmstead (Greensboro)

I saved the most famous—and likely the farthest-away-from-where-you-live brewery—for last. If you’re willing to make the pilgrimage, have an Edward for me. And a Marie. And an Everett. And, OK, a Harlan.

HUNGRY? Snag some Jasper Hill Farm cheese from Willey’s General Store, or have a sit-down meal at the Hardwick Street Cafe. Order the Jasper Hill Cheese Plate to start. In true neighborly Vermonter fashion, Jasper Hill and Cabot Cheese collaborate to create Cabot Clothbound, a uniquely savory but sweet, must-not-miss cheese that’s ripened in a specially calibrated vault at Jasper Hill Farms. Round out the meal by chowing down on a hearty salad topped with the house-made blue cheese dressing.

DENVER … The finest beers in America were celebrated today as the Brewers Association (BA) awarded 318 medals* to 283 breweries at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded in 107 beer categories covering 174 different beer styles (including all subcategories), establishing the best examples of each style in the country.

In the 33rd edition of the most prestigious professional beer competition in the country, judges evaluated 9,497 entries from 2,295 breweries representing all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, along with 113 Pro-Am Competition and 70 Collaboration Competition entries. Judging took place over the course of three days, with awards presented at a ceremony held Saturday morning at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

“This year’s GABF competition was the largest and most competitive to date,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “The beers and talent were as impressive as ever, and we congratulate this year’s winners for their achievements in brewing.”
