As a crafty person, this Christmas, my older sister gifted me my very first miniature DIY model kit — Cathy's Flower House. I was super excited when I received it! For my first miniature kit, I had so much fun building this, and overall, I am happy with the results!

First Miniatures Project: Cathy's Flower House (Robotime)

This was my first miniatures project, a Robotime kit that I bought from a thrift store for $12. I made a few additions but mostly kept the final piece pretty close to the kit.

These pictures show the furniture pieces before I made any major changes:

Making this kit meant making plants. Lots and lots of plants. I feel like plenty of clutter is what makes a miniature scene pop, and this kit delivered.

Here are the finished furniture pieces, before I built the outer walls:

Tiny post-it note and tiny canvas made from snippets of real post-its and canvases.

Most of the additions were miniature shells, but I also made a few extra plants and plant pots.

By this point I was starting to scour the household for tiny bits and pieces. This elephant incense-stick holder made a great feature plant pot.

And then there was this tiny kitten plucked from my miniatures collection. The little gardening coat was a fold of left-over fabric.

The lighting system was extremely exciting as I've never crafted with electronics before!

Finally, putting together the outside details. I added a few pebbles and moved around some of the elements (and got rid of one very ugly pot lol):

Overall I really enjoyed this project and it did light up a bit of a fire for miniature kits for me! I was shopping online for more even before I finished it. Looking back there are some changes I would make but it's genuinely a really good kit.

Flowery Sweets and Teas, part 2

The chairs in this kit are adorable, but they’re going to be way too small for my Critters. Time to see what we can do about that!

After measuring the original pieces, and comparing them to a Critter-sized chair’s measurements, I built new pieces from craft wood. Critter chairs are about 1.6x the size of the Robotime chairs. A little fudging is okay here, as long as the pieces fit together.

Here are the fully-assembled and painted Robotime chairs, and some of the up-scaled pieces. I had to adjust my smaller set of legs because like a fool, I didn’t measure that piece before I cut. Luckily it was too big, and I was able to cut it smaller.

The seats are made of a flat piece of wood, with trimmed-and-sanded coffee stirrers to make the slats. They’re a bit sturdier than the originals, which are only one laser-cut piece.

I hand-drilled some tiny holes to indicate where the screws would be on the back, if it had them.

And voilá! Critter-sized chairs!

I’ll paint them to match later; I’m not sure how much of the original paint I’ll need for the kit, so I may have to mix my own.

IT’S FINALLY DONE OTL

My office is making us use up our vacation days because no one took vacation last year during covid so I took today off and I was feeling restless so I finished this.

I have a love-hate relationship with this. I tried to step outside of the box a bit and come up with some of my own ideas instead of following the manual so much, and as a result, I made a lot of mistakes, but I also learned a lot. Despite this being a smaller kit than usual, I took a long time with it because I had to do a lot of thinking.

Here is the original kit from Rolife/Robotime. I really recommend their diorama craft kits. Their manuals are very detailed so even though their kits look really daunting, they are actually great for beginners.

Things that made me mad while working on this project >:(

- Instead of using a cut out of a pattern, I used popsicle sticks to lay out the flooring. But because popsicle sticks are thicker than a normal piece of paper, it caused a lot of other problems with regards to my walls, and I had to do a lot of ungluing and regluing to accommodate for the fact that my floor was now a bit higher than what’s in the manual.

- I also zoned out a lot and glued the wrong sides of things, which is totally my fault, sigh. This happened a lot with the black parts of the porch. I tried going over my mistakes with a sharpie, but the shade of the sharpie doesn’t match the shade of the wooden pieces in the kit So if you look closely some of the black pieces are slightly different shades v.v

- My bottle of glue was also drying up so I had to work with a lot of REALLY CLUMPY GLUE which was less than ideal >:(

- The space is a tad bit sparse. The manual had a lot more miscellaneous stuff lying here and there but I just didn’t really like some of the pieces and opted not to use them.

Things I liked/learned :3

- Despite all the problems the popsicle stick flooring gave me, I liked how it turned out! I actually saw a Youtuber lay out some flooring in a diorama similarly with skewers/some sort of wood parts and so I was kind of copying them. Despite the problems, I’m still glad I tried it because I learned a lot about having to plan ahead lol.

- I’d like to think I am getting better at doing the wiring for the light bulbs. The first step to doing the wiring is that you need to strip the wires so that a bit of the wire peeks out of the rubber. I used to be really clumsy and I’d always rip the wires instead, but I think my hands are getting nimbler lol. The problem with the wires that come with the kit is that they only have a single wire within, whereas wires that you may see in your typical household items will have several wires within the coating (I only know this because the first time I did wiring I kept messing up so my dad took apart some old electronics he had lying around and gave me the wires). So the wires were very delicate and if I bent them even a little, they would lose their place and the light wouldn’t turn on. I got very frustrated and was going to give up, but I tried to flatten and “tighten” the wires at the light bulb a bit with my pliers and it did in fact stabilize the current! :D I am so pleased with myself haha.

- I tried mixing and matching some colours instead of following what was in the manual to a tee. I had to mix paints for the orange wall and I actually stressed a lot about it because I know nothing about colour theory lol. But I think the way it came it looked kind of cute. Maybe not as striking as the original green that came with the kit, but eh, I can live with it.

- For the blue flowers inside the porch and the pink flowers in the planter outside, I’d originally made them but didn’t like how they turned out, so I took them all out and redid them, and I REALLY like how they came out the second time.

I just remembered that when I started this kit I was thinking of making ivies to go across the roof, but I guess I just forgot about it oops. This porch shall remain ivy-less v.v

Okay, I’m done rambling. Like I said, I have a love-hate relationship with this project because I learned a lot, but I can see ALL of the flaws staring back at me in the face haha.
