Do you have any favorite looks for Koshiko and Nakata? Like photos where you particularly liked their fashion or styling?

So many examples that writing a response to this simple question nearly drove me insane for several days lmao. One of capsule's biggest "selling" points for me was that they mostly wore their own clothes for photoshoots, MVs, performances etc and Nakata largely handled styling and whatnot. (Also probably one of the reasons that Metro Pulse landed disastrously with me, I don't want to see polygonal character models fighting to the death, I want you two to serve looks 😭)

Where Toshiko's concerned, I usually loved her outfits at the annual festivals they'd do like Rock in Japan and Countdown:

2010 RIJ FES fit is legendary

I honestly feel like this houndstooth configuration that appeared at CDJ 2012 altered my brain chemistry in some way. I can see it being a bit too "circus" or costume-y for some, the bi-color tights are definitely going a little overboard, but I still think about it all these years later (take a closer look at the heels she wore too).

2014 Summer Sonic, I like to call this the angel look; there's a pattern here with me liking these dresses/skirts with strange construction lol

Big fan of the OTONOKO 2018 sparkly tulle dress (may be a top + skirt combo, either way). It was extremely whimsical, looked beautiful on a stage environment, and I love the idea of Toshiko as a pinch of the night sky placed down on earth. (I like it so much you can have another photo of it here)

At their last Countdown appearance in 2019 she wore this draped dress; the blunt lob haircut really elevated the maturity of the whole look (I think some low denier tights would've made this even crazier).

Thigh-high boots go brrr (starting to wonder if I just really liked this wig a lot)

Special mention to this sequin dress, she is nothing short of a genius for wearing those nylons with it and Nakata was wrong for saying she looked like a fish lmao

I do actually like her simpler stage outfits like this gold babydoll dress. Her headwear is unparalleled, I can't imagine how many hats/hair accessories she owns...

Lastly her WAVE RUNNER tour encore look was just cute and nicely coordinated for being so simple; I also adore the way their shoes matched here but I lose my mind whenever they match their outfits at all…

In general I love how consistent she is in her style, it's very elegant and feminine overall but she likes to do these unusual silhouettes and whimsical accessories that have a lot of drama to them. This is my favorite example of her fashion outside of performances; my list highlighted major appearances where you'd expect her to go full theatrical but even her regular day-to-day outfits are nice, often simple but never boring.

Moving along...

Generally speaking Nakata has a great eye for individual pieces rather than excelling at putting together well-coordinated outfits (on himself at least, I loved the times he styled Toshiko). He's also the living embodiment of the shorts-wearing NPC trainer in Pokemon lmao. Like he's definitely shown the potential to Dress over the years and I'd actually love to see him do styling work on other people again (also would love to see art direction from him again, design, etc etc anyway :^)), he has a very particular aesthetic sense that I always enjoyed, but overall he seems to prize comfort and especially after 2016 you can see his style get increasingly...utilitarian? Unembellished? Honestly there was a video I saw by some YouTuber who attempted to discuss Nakata's style and all they had to go off was his Instagram and their conclusion was "he likes to wear his own logo a lot;" it's an understatement to say that made me die a little inside, lol (not the tuber's fault of course).

I tried to pinpoint specific ~whole outfits but it's kind of difficult, as a result the majority of these are from magazine shoots:

2007 Sugarless GiRL for MARQUEE - I've been obsessed with this since forever but I'm not even sure how to explain it... It's a wintry, boyish sort of look, the overalls were very flattering, the shoes are cute, and that scarf was actually really interesting because it had these weird hand pockets (you can see them in this photo). I'd kill to see more takes from any of their magazine shoots but especially this one.

2005 LDK event covered in CUTiE magazine - I think everyone loves this one lmao, whoever did Nakata's hair is a god. It's a great inbetween style from LDK to FRUITS CLiPPER; it's very interesting the way he sort of found his fashion "voice" the same time he found his musical one for capsule.

Speaking of which, 2006 FRUITS CLiPPER artist profile shoot (well, this is from MARQUEE, but he wore the same thing for their artist pics) - the black-white-gray layered look might be my favorite example of his ~eye for coordinating clothes or whatever you wanna call it lol. Love that C necklace too, he only really wore it during '06 though and was never much for necklaces in general (I think it's funny one of the few remaining pics on his Insta is this one). Blazers are notoriously tricky to wear without seeming like you're stuffy and/or going to the office, he somehow always pulled them off really well...

2007 capsule rmx for MARQUEE - another that seems unanimously loved. I liked that headscarf he's wearing so much that I bought the same one (not a single clue how to style/pull it off though)

2007 FLASH BACK for MARQUEE - love the long zip-up jacket with the fur-trim hood, love those iconic yellow Belly Button boots (yes, that's really the brand name)

Getting away from MARQUEE, I just posted these but his outfit for S&R was actually kinda good? I do wanna beat him over the head for wearing shorts to meet Sakamoto Ryuichi but it's a cute look and I think he was smart to wear the brown frames instead of his black ones as they would've been too harsh. The detailing on the shirt and shorts goes perfectly, while I don't like high-top shoes on him in a broad sense these had cute contrasting laces and I like their suede look. More accessorizing with jewelry would've been great here but at that point (2012) he put away pretty much everything apart from the watches...

self vol. 1 (spring 2009) - this one doesn't go like super crazy or anything but I think it's cute and nicely put-together, here's another picture of it in better/natural lighting. Really like that T-shirt from FRAPBOIS

2013 CAPS LOCK - you could say this is pretty boring compared to the other examples here but I reeeally liked the weird keycap rings(?) and the not-insignificant heels on his oxfords lol. The fact that these are capris and not full-length pants also keeps it from being too stuffy and basic. (And once again wearing the same color for the top + bottom makes this sort of "seamless" look that in turn helps create an illusion of proportionality.)

2015 Downtown appearance - and now I'm going to throw all fashion rules about proportions/looking ~taller out the window because I loved this lmaooo, peak comfy outfit and makes me want to buy an oversized white hoodie so bad (I haven't said it yet but I think white might be his best color). Also I'm pretty sure his hair was professionally done here, it looked great.

Since I'm nuts I'm gonna keep blathering but now about specific pieces he's worn that I really liked (not a complete list by any means, just what comes to mind right now):

This baseball cap with the half of a stag rising out of it, he's f*cking crazy I swear to god (naturally he wore this because they shot these pics at Hanjiro which was a clothing store with a particular sense of décor)

Bomber jacket at ageHa last year, I love stuff like this with that sort of mirror-like sheen (it's kind of iridescent but not quite) and the cut/style of it was good

I think way too often about this reversible jacket he wore on a karaoke date with Kyary. Up to that point I'd just seen him wearing logos and boring all-black semi-athleisure stuff for years so this was a pretty crazy statement piece

Speaking of random pieces that live rent-free in my head, I really want to know the brand of this sweatshirt from the 2019 album announcement, it's sooo weird and just, like, interesting

The blazer for WAVE RUNNER was shockingly cute, no comment on the rest of the fit or the wonky Photoshopping though (god their artist photos are so hit-or-miss)

Not the best possible pic of this but I like this shirt with the studded suspenders detail, he wore this to RIJ FES one year

Do headphones count? Headphones count, this is my favorite pair he ever had

This jacket is one of my favorites of his, I wanted the same one so badly for so many years lmao

Honestly there's so much that I'm exhausted writing this list, I'm gonna stop with these pants and leave it at that

His style at its best is just kind of quirky, very very playful, obviously keeps to a grayscale palette but he has some surprisingly colorful pieces. His taste in jewelry was pretty awesome too, he had some interesting rings I was a big fan of but I'm too lazy to go find pics (there was a Hello Kitty one, a giant star, a cow's head...).

In conclusion I think they share a lot of similarities in their style and I would kill for either of them to have ever released a ~style book (sadly the timing for that has long passed and the demand was probably nonexistent in the first place). Some people also may be wondering why I completely ignored their looks from pre-2006/the future pop neo whatever era and the simple answer is...IDK, it's not that I hated their styling back then (well, it was pretty rough sometimes), it was just more costume-y and as a result sort of inauthentic in a sense. They were also frequently styled by other people during that time; their own personal style and/or Nakata's styling had a much greater impact on my teenaged brain as far as influencing my tastes. But Toshiko wore the '60s silhouette and boyish sort of hairstyles extremely well and the contemode hair/makeup girlie Miyagawa Tomoko always did a fantastic job.

Whoever actually read this far is clearly very interested in this topic so if you want to feel free to message me your own favorite capsule outfits and whatnot. I know Toshiko particularly had some crazy colorful/weird dresses she's worn in the past that I didn't mention here lol

[TRIVIA] A Compilation of Sato Ryuji in 2D

Over the years, Sato Ryuji has been drawn quite a few times in 2D. Here is a compilation of the many versions of 2D Sato Ryuji.

"DOLMEN X" (2015, 2016, 2017)

"DOLMEN X" is a manga that centers around the story of four aliens who seek to invade earth through idol activities.

The main character of the manga is loosely inspired by Ryuji, and Ryuji was also featured in several volumes of the manga as himself.

"2.5 JIGEN DANSHI" (2015)

The mangaka of "DOLMEN X", Takagi Yuna, also sent an illustration of Ryuji which she drew to "2.5 Jigen Danshi" because Ryuji was featured in the magazine.

"OCHANOMIZU ROCK" THE MANGA (2018)

"Ochanomizu Rock" is a TV drama that tells the story of Katayama Hajime, who aspires to perform at the Budokan with his band, DYDARABOTCH. What he doesn't expect is to cross paths with his older brother, Katayama Ryo, who he has been estranged from since the death of their mother. Even while working towards his dream, Hajime still yearns for the acknowledgement of his brother.

In the TV drama, Katayama Hajime is played by Sato Ryuji, and a manga based on the TV drama was published.

"Top Runners of 2.5D" is a published collection of interviews (with photos) featuring Ryuji and other key figures in the 2.5D industry including:

THE BROW BEAT X "VISUAL ROCK FES" COLLABORATION (2021)

Ryuji's band, The Brow Beat, had a collaboration the "VISUAL SHOCK Fes" where special goods were produced for their pop-up shop. Amongst the goods produced were a sticker and an acrylic keyholder with Ryuji and HAKUEI.

"PRINCE OF LEGEND LOVE ROYALE" (2021)

In 2019, Ryuji was cast in the TV drama "Kizoku Tanjou -PRINCE OF LEGEND-" where he played Seiya, the Number 3 host in Club TEXAS, the top club in Night Ring, who converses in a mix of Japanese and English.

In 2021, Seiya was added to, "PRINCE OF LEGEND LOVE ROYALE", the game that is based on the TV drama.

COVER OF THE BROW BEAT SINGLE "HAREVUTAI" (2021)

For their major debut single, The Brow Beat released "HAREVUTAI", which is also the opening theme for "Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS". As the design for one of their single covers, Tadano Kazuko and Matsushita Hiromi, the illustrators/animators who designed the characters for the series drew Ryuji and HAKUEI in the style of the characters.

"SATO RYUJI X KUMITA" VILLAGE VANGUARD GOODS COLLABORATION (2021)

Ryuji has just released a collection of goods in collaboration with Kumita. Kumita is also known as the artist who created the character design for Kashuu Kiyomitsu from "Touken Ranbu", which is the character Ryuji plays in the 2.5D adaptation, the "Musical Touken Ranbu".

For this collaboration, Kumita has drawn Ryuji as himself along with his two pet cats, Punio and Mochio.

Toboso Yana, the mangaka of "Kuroshitsuji", attended the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Trial Performance~" where Sato Ryuji played Kashuu Kiyomitsu. After watching the performance, she drew a portrait of Ryuji’s Kashuu Kiyomitsu.

“Renai Destiny ~Honne Wo Ronjitai~”

An exciting selection in recent Morning Musume live sets has been the inclusion of “Koko Ni Iruze!” Though it was released during the Golden era, still the group’s most widely celebrated period by the public at large, more titles from that time rank higher in popularity, so the decision to feature it in their festival sets reads like a salvaging of an old favorite. It even seems purposeful as they slot it as the show closer. The gesture especially left a mark on me at last year’s Hina Fes during the first weeks of worldwide quarantine, the group’s lyrics “spread the wings of love / I’m here, I’ll scream it right here right now” echoing as they exit the stage.

I wonder if “Koko Ni Iruze!” was on the mind of Tsunku when he was writing “Renai Destiny ~Honne Wo Ronjitai~.” He has shared that the music in the group’s new album 16th ~That’s J-Pop~ was ready even before their Rock’in Japan 2019 set, where I first saw that they brought the Golden era single back into their repertoire. But that rock swing calls to mind “Koko Ni Iruze!” and nostalgia punches through even harder as it arrives after an intense synth intro. The song teases yet another EDM cut in the vein of their output from their last few years only to reveal an entirely different track that harkens back to another period.

The tone of their lyrics, too, reflect more of the optimistic attitude heard in the Golden era. “Don’t give up / it’s still a bit too early / look, they even look like / they want to give up / now’s the time to get over this hump / the chance to step outside the lines,” they sing. They cheerfully advise as though we have nothing to lose by trying, and they go on as if admitting defeat is a ridiculous idea especially with so much potential still left unfulfilled. Morning Musume only see possibility and the room to do better.

The group’s outlook remains bright enough in “Renai Destiny” for them to deliver their more conflicting moments with the same inspiring aura. Even when they sing about an overwhelming clash of emotions, it reads like a necessary step to become the better version of themselves. “This sorrow / this passion overflowing from my heart / or this feeling of doubt / can I rise above it?” They wonder, but it’s immediately followed by powerful clarity delivered in the chorus, bursting with blinding synths and thrashing drum beats. Their lack of understanding ends up being the very key to realizing the mission stated in the subtitle: “I want to debate what’s true.”

All that said, “Renai Destiny” is not so much a revival of the past than it is an update of ideas by building off of the highs of different eras. The early Numeral era, particularly “Oh My Wish!” and its desire to improve, is equally represented in the song as much as “Koko Ni Iruze!” By shedding the shadows of doubt looming in the former and straightening the posture of the latter, you can argue it has become the best of worlds. The center of this Venn diagram is where you can find one of the most memorable lyric of the track: “zenbu yattarou / zenbu yattare,” or “watch me do everything / I’ll do everything.” They drop their formalism to reveal a truer language, like this is for real now. Morning Musume is ready to tackle the unknown in “Renai Destiny,” and they sound invincible as they face the challenges.

SB69 Comiket 97 limited Illustration book: Ambivalence Black

Hello! I know I’m very late to post this because Comiket 97 happened in December 2019 but since now I have a blog dedicated to SB69, I want to share the limited goods I got my hands on~

Every twice a year(Comiket is a biannual event) SB69 will have a booth at Comiket! Though, because of the COVID-19 situation this 2020, Comiket 98 and 99 was cancelled...

Anyways! SB69 started selling these comiket limited illustration books since Comiket 93. Cyan, Titan, Ailane and Crow were the covers for 93 and it was Rosia and Shu Zo for 94. I didn’t manage to get them tho..TwT

For some reason they didn’t produce any for Comiket 95 and 96 but then...! The limited illustration book is back for Comiket 97, with Darudayu and Aion as the covers! The illustrations are named Ambivalence Black this time~

I actually got a friend (non-SB69er..) to help me get the goods because they were in Japan for Comiket 97 so I can’t say anything about the booth itself...but I’m so thankful for them to help me get these limited goods!!

From the Twitter, I read that the book comes with a bromide (Crow, Cyan, Titan, Shu Zo, Rosia or Darudayu) and a keychain of either Darudayu or Aion. I didn’t really mind who I got for the keychain but I really wanted Titan or Cyan for the bromide. However, apparently everything were like pre-packed according to my friend.

Of course, now, the contents! It’s an illustration book so yea, the book contains full illustrations of bromides from the previous SB69 game (not Fes a Live, Shobafes wasn’t even announced yet when Comiket 97 happened lolol). Not all the bromides are included though. But a lot of my favorite bromides were included ehehe. They did try to include bromides from every band from the previous SB69 game though!!

I can’t possibly share every page in the book because that will be like.. a lot. I’ll include some of my favorite bromide illustrations in this post though! Enjoy~

This Cyan LR! I actually got her in the 39 melon LR confirmed pull in the previous game~ Thinking back, this bromide was probably a hint at SB69′s next stage

Rix and Mix!! Rapezziauto/YKMM was my jam <3 I can literally hear this illustration saying “pyon pyon” ..ah the memories

AILANE!!! This LR was a really huge contrast to our little queen of darkness

First up is a manga called “Show By Rock!! Detective -Crimson Coloured Stars and Skyscraper Apocalypse-”

The manga features the boys of Shingancrimsonz, Trichronika and ARCAREAFACT. It’s basically about Shingancrimsonz and ARCAREAFACT who are detectives competing/working together to catch the phantom thief who is Shu Zo.

Look at this man, he’s way too sparkly to be a phantom thief

I’ll translate and post this manga someday but honestly even though the storyline sounds rather cool, the manga is actually a big joke. I especially found the last page extremely funny...

The song does not exist (it will be even funnier if it existed) but in the manga, Titan worked with Crow and they wrote a song and I bring your attention to this line of lyrics: “ お前の身長は177cmオレは165cm Long Distance〜 “

It translates to “Your height is 177cm, I’m 165cm Long Distance~” If you ever paid close attention, 177cm is Titan’s height and 165cm is Crow’s height and you know how Crow is well, rather short. Plus the fact the song also something to do about milk...that’s not the only hilarious part in the manga :”D

Despite the cool ikemen art style, the manga is a joke

The second omake is a short 3 page manga introducing Mashumairesh!! and their anime! I’ll also be translating and posting it someday~

And lastly, they also included 2 4-komas of Sanrio Anime Store Howan! This one’s a special one because it’s about Comiket~

Momusu’ performance in Rock in Japan fes 2019 was absolutely awesome and having full assistance by the fifth song is just mesmerizing. I’m proud of the girls, getting a crowd of 60-70,000 ppl is not achieved by just anyone, it deserves a bigger venue than budoukan for final tours, yokohama or saitama super arena maybe? Or better, a dome concert finally! Praying a lot for that miracle lol

Japanese Snack Review

Puchi Konpeito (Japan Crate July 2019)

🍬 Flavor

I’ve never liked konpeito. I’ve had it before because it’s so cute and iconic but...teeth torture. It’s basically bite-sized rock candy. What’s the point of eating something this hard? It tastes okay I guess but, that texture is so unappealing to me. When you bite into them, they kind of explode into powder so it’s not like they actually hurt to eat, but I still feel like my teeth aren’t appreciating the experience.

The bag doesn’t tell you what the flavors each color represent so I guess you’re just supposed to figure it out. Here are my guesses based on blind taste-testing: orange is probably supposed to be orange, white just tastes like sugar so I’m guessing it’s like “plain,” pink is definitely strawberry, green is melon, purple is grape, and yellow doesn��t taste like lemon so I guess banana. Each one is probably 99.9% sugar.

🍬 Packaging

Everything about the packaging is adorable from the colors, to the font, to the little konpeito mascots. Any kid would probably want to give konpeito a try at least once because they look pretty magical. Weirdly, the front of the bag says “KONFEITO” for some reason. Well, the characters for “Fe” and “Pe” are very similar but it’s still a funny mistake.

🍬 Appearance

These little guys always remind of the anime Kobato because the main character carries around a little jar of them. I guess these are the “petit” version which makes me wonder how big a normal konpeito is supposed to be...Notice I only got one blue one! I think my favorite of the bunch are the green and pink (melon and strawberry).

2019: Work Hard, Play Hard

My 2019 resolution was:

Travel more

Take better care of my physical body (luckily mentally I’m good)

Focus on my career: say yes to every opportunity, networking event, take charge and initiative, volunteer for trainings… anything that would get me name recognition and climb that corporate ladder.

Two of the three I did a hell of a lot! #2 took a back seat for most of the year until the last quarter. I finally decided to incorporate running into my daily life. In the past, I would normally run once a week or have a quick warmup. But now I’m counting my steps daily and making sure I’m moving more. Running was never something I enjoyed but I’m feeling much better after this transition to more cardio.

Resolution #3: I was working at MESI which had been a fantastic experience working side-by-side with Nancy and Lori (the co-owners of the company) so I was suddenly disappointed when we received the news that they were selling their company to a bigger engineering firm: Barr Engineering. Luckily, after the transition, our Denver office stayed the same: same people (even the owners!), same office, we were just now referred to as the Barr Engineering Denver office. So not much changed, just better benefits and more people to work with, I did not need to be alarmed. My new title is Senior Air Quality Specialist. I have spent most of the year networking and writing proposals for new clients. So much so that Barr Engineering has now added Business Development as part of my role and I have been getting much praise for getting new clients and work. So hopefully this continues on for 2020!

If I have to think back what was my FAVORITE part of 2019, first thing that comes to mind is our 9-day road trip around Colorado (and a bit of Arizona/Utah boarder). It was the year of Colorado exploration! I stayed true to my resolution to travel more and visited so many new countries, US states and cities:
