La Porte de l'Enfer
By Auguste Rodin
Bronze Sculpture, 1880-1917 (Unfinished)
Musée d'Orsay (original plaster model).
So, a little clarification:
Auguste Rodin was commissioned to create an entrance to a "secular building to house the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris" (Elsen 34). Rodin accepted but decided to follow in his original Medieval-Renaissance inspiration, crafting the Dante's Inferno and Gates of Paradise (Ghiberti) melded project of The Gates of Hell.
Although the aforementioned building was not created, Rodin decided to continue working on this sculpture until his death. Plaster models of Rodin's gates stand [and have stood] worldwide, being held in Mexico, France, the U.S., Japan, and Switzerland.
Rodin's meticulous designs on his gates have been made into bigger projects, including The Thinker, Fleeting Love, Eternal Springtime, Despair, and Kneeling Female Faun (to name a few).
There's quite a lot to state about this piece, so I recommend researching more on this sculpture and Rodin himself!!
