A little post for all of you in my notes asking about whether or not you should get a certain mobility aid:
DO IT!!!!!
Do it! Do it! Do it! DO it!!! Do it! Do it!!!!!!!!!
But what if I don’t need it? You would not be considering one if you did not.
But what if I just want it to look cool? Unlikely (see: Ableism), but if you truly don’t need one, you will quickly find a mobility aid to be more of a hassle than an aid.
But what if it doesn’t help and I really do need help? Then you learned that that mobility aid wasn’t the right one for you. Try again!
But what if it’s too expensive? Try out a cheaper option first if you are unsure. Visit thrift stores, try a rental, borrow one if you can... The disabled community is one of the poorest communities out there, so many of us have to resort to a not-so-ideal option for our mobility aids. I found my wheelchair in my neighbor’s garbage and just gave it some love. I waited and got my rollator on sale. My cane was only $12 online. It may not be pretty, and it may not be your best fit, but it will be better than nothing and it will give you a better feel for what you do need when you are ready and able to invest in the future.
But won’t people treat me differently once I am visibly physically disabled? I can’t say that they won’t (they definitely will), but it will be worth it. You deserve to have your accommodations met. You deserve to not be in pain, to not be fatigued, to not pass out, to not fall, to not run into things, to go places, to have fun at your own pace. You deserve all that and more! Using an aid doesn’t make you physically disabled, it helps with the disability that you already have.
Get yourself the help that you deserve.
Get the mobility aid!

Hey guys do you know what the part is called that keeps a folded rollator closed?
Since ours is second hand sale it was just being held shut with a bungee cord but it’s not reliable considering it’s not within our ability to close it with that on our own
So we want to buy a clamp or something to hold it closed when not in use but
I’ve been googling for like 15 minutes and can’t figure it out
If it helps we have the four wheel medline rollator

Hey :) can I ask what brand of hiking poles you use? I mentioned them in my tags on the recent mobility aid post and then saw you use them. I had a quick look on your blog but couldn't see the answer. I'm not sure what the difference is between €10 ones and €100 ones
Thank you for asking, I love talking about my hiking poles! My two pairs are Black Diamond brand, one telescoping and the other Z fold which is more compact to leave in the vehicle in case I did not bring poles and needed them after all. They were purchased online so what the store had at the time, and most importantly what I could get in purple. Mine are on the expensive end but have been sturdy and comfortable to hold. Trying them out in person at a sports store would be really good information for your decision.
From a Reddit thread I found the cheaper brands are still pretty good and might make a better place to start to find out if they help you. There is also a lot of information at PolesForMobility.com which is where I learned about the concept after seeing a listing for a Poles for Mobility class in a local activities guide here in California.
I'm guessing poles are available used online or at yard sales when some people find they are more a fuss to carry than they benefit from when hiking. In my case they helped immensely before I got my Richie brace to stabilize my foot. Originally I got them to keep from falling whenever my ankle turned regularly but also benefitted from the shift of some weight from my legs to arms whenever I was walking in pain.
Nobody has ever been weird about me using them in the mall and everywhere else indoors. Interestingly, being both autistic and anxious I noticed having the poles (or rollator) to focus on made me less likely to be stressed by my surroundings which was a nice surprise benefit. Other thoughts, adding accessory rubber ends to prevent floor scratching is a must if you only have ice tips on the poles.
Learning to use the hand strap to lightly swing the pole forward rather than grip it makes walking with them far more pleasant. I see people walking around stabbing the ground as they walk with the poles tight in their fists and that looks pretty jarring.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you or anybody may have. I really do love my mobility aids.

okay fat activists are complaining that their followers turn on them when they go on the glp1s and i get that being in the public eye is usually just harassment i get that and i don't want that. But what I'm saying is like you claim that you read the material and keep up to date on fat related research but then you take the drug that starves you to lose weight. You talk day in and day out about how dieting is bad because it's focused not on the best way to receive energy and nutrients, but about cutting this and that out and having less food, aka starving yourself to lose weight. And then you medically induce starvation to lose weight. And you claim that you support health at any size and acknowledging the unique relationship fat has to health, that fat is not in and of itself not inherently disabling but that it can be a factor, not just physically, about why it's so hard to get out in the public eye and raise your stamina, and then you turn around and say "well i need to lose weight in order to exercise" "i couldn't walk as much as i wanted i didn't have as much energy as i wish i had only specifically because of the fat"
If you don't have energy, you can look into that, there's a myriad of reasons for fatigue. If you don't have stamina, you can build it! It's not the weight it's not the weight it's not the weight it's not the weight it's not the weight. Yes it's hard to go out and build stamina every day, but it's hard for everyone. I don't have any motivation to do it so i have to have a job where i have to build my stamina. If you have a desk job sorry but you've gotta find a way to get your half hour of cardioat least 4 days a week. It's not the weight it's not the weight it's not the weight. Water aerobics. A stroll through a park. Walk the whole mall. "I can't stand that long" i didn't say 30 mins in a row. Also sit whenever you need. Go to an estate sale and get a rollator.
Anyway this turned into two posts. Glp1s starve you into losing weight and if you go off it you will gain it back in line with the research of weight related to starvation. You can build stamina regardless of weight but remember unique circumstances regarding disability
