if you feel like you’re ‘getting in the way’ as a mobility aid user, particularly with larger aids like wheelchairs, rollators/walkers, gait trainers and service dogs, That Is A Fault Of The Space (and potentially the people), not of you. You deserve all the space you take up and more.

✨ Things I'm insecure about because of my disabilities ✨
Being unreliable
Having a messy room
Abdominal bloating
Not being 100% on top of my hygiene
Having to excuse myself to the washroom more often
Using my mobility aids
Random bruising
My chicken (weak) legs
Having to explain myself to strangers
Taking the accessible seating on the bus/train
Tripping over myself
My brain fog (I used to have a fantastic memory, I feel like I come off as stupid now)
Being super sweaty
Not being "good representation"
Leaving functions early
Sitting on the floor in public
And so much more. This is a reminder that you're not alone in feeling gross or undesirable, it's also okay to feel that way.
Sometimes you need to feel the feelings before you deal with them.

i've said it already probably but ppl who don't use mobility aids. especially doctors. stop trying to get rid of other ppls mobility aid. stop making that a priority. stop it with the "we gotta get you off that [mobility aid]" "you shouldn't need to be using a [mobility aid]" "let's focus on getting you to where you don't need [mobility aid]" "a [mobility aid]? but have you tried [herb]/[medicine]/ [exercise]/[facebook hack]/[pseudoscience]/[meditation] instead?" "but you look old/cringe/weak/sick". shut up
i don't know why so many of y'all think my end goal is to stop using the thing that helps me. and i KNOW most of y'all wear glasses or contacts but you're not running around trying to find the solution to make you stop needing them. so quit doing it with every other aid just because it reminds you of old or sick people.
especially bc most of y'all don't want to have that reaction when it comes to chronic pain, fatigue or discomfort. i say "my joints hurt" you say "oh well :/". i say "i feel lightheaded all the time" you say "just push through it". i say "my stomach is at least a 7/10 on the pain scale every day" you say "are you sure it's actually that bad? maybe you're exaggerating".
but as soon as i pull out a cane, or a shower chair, or a spinny chair for when im cooking in the kitchen, and i say "finally, im getting really good help!" . that's when you care. and all you want to do is take that away as soon as possible.
you just don't want to fucking see disabled ppl be disabled.
you don't want to have to look at it. you don't want to have to listen to it. you don't want to have to be reminded of it.
but too fucking bad !! i don't care !! im naming and decorating my canes !! they will be the loudest part of my outfits !! the same will go for a rollator if i'll still need one in the future !! i'm going to talk about how i'm disabled regardless of if anyone else can hear me !! because i am !! why should i hide just because YOU don't like it !! close your eyes !!!!!!
#do not come up in here talking about 'oh so you think everyone should just stay sick'#bc i know what i said and it wasn't that#and let's not forget how Chronic Illnesses work#disabilities#disability#disabled#mobility aid#cane user#rollator#actually disabled#handmadeorganicpost#chronic illness#chronic pain#chronically ill

braces do damage to your body
canes do damage to your body
crutches do damage to your body
rollators do damage to your body
wheelchairs do damage to your body
before you choose to use a mobility aid you need to weigh the pros and cons of using one. there are drawbacks to every single mobility aid. there is no such thing as a harmless mobility aid. mobility aids are not the right choice for everyone and it's important that people emphasize that when suggesting that people try them. mobility aids can permanently damage your joints and it's important that people emphasize that when suggesting them.
mobility aids need to be an informed decision.
so many people have permanent damage to their bodies that they regret because people online told them to try a mobility aid and that there were no downsides. there are downsides.
a mobility aid is only the right choice when the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. it takes information for someone to know whether they would benefit enough from a mobility aid to make it worth it. when you tell someone that there are no problems with mobility aids, that doctors are all lying about the damage they do, you deny people information. doctors can be wrong and can deny people mobility aids incorrectly but there's truth in the fact that they damage joints, change gaits, and cause muscle atrophy among other problems.
and on that note doctor/PT/OT guidance is important when it's available. using mobility aids that have been sized incorrectly, even for a short time, can cause enough damage that mobility aids are no longer an option for that person. using mobility aids incorrectly, even for a short time, can cause enough damage that mobility aids are no longer an option for that person. failing to tell people that they need to learn how to use and size their mobility aid correctly (preferably with a doctor/PT/OT's help) causes real harm to people.
give people information when you suggest mobility aids to them. people listen to your suggestions without researching and it causes harm.

A TikTok I made
Video description:
Short clip of a white person (Junebug) sitting down plays. They wear an orange sweater, shorts, a knee sleeve and hold a cane. Behind them is their bedroom. They swivel slightly on the chair as Adrianne Lenkers’ “Forwards Beckon Rebound” plays in the backround.
The largest text says “As we organize, remember accessibility is more vital than ever. When access to healthcare is threatened, disabilities will be cause and worsened at a much higher rate.”
There are lots of little text blurbs surrounding it, all of different colors. They read as follows, top to bottom:
“Ask your community organizers what they’re doing to ensure disabled people can attend and participate.”
“Having a speaking event? Consider investing in an interpreter, or even just making a PowerPoint to make following along easier.”
“You’re organizing an event? Make sure your venue is accessible to mobility aid users, neurodivergent people, and ppl (people) with seizure disorders.”
“Is your community compiling gender neutral bathrooms? Ensure accessibility is listed with them.”
“Carry snacks with you. It comes in handy more often than you know.”
“Ensure your marches take mobility aid accessible paths”
“Be a voice when asked. If you’re not sure, just ask us if we’d like you to speak up for us.”
And then, in large letters, it says “Check in on your disabled friends”

Winter Reminder for Mobility Aid Users
For those of us heading into winter in the northern hemisphere, particularly in areas where it gets snowy or icey, if you haven't already done so now is probably the time to start thinking about winter-readying your mobility aid(s).
Crutch, Cane, and non wheel-ed Walker Frame users: Depending on the typical winter weather conditions for you this might just be making sure your ferrules/tips of your canes/crutches are in good condition or it could mean getting new, potentially winter specific, ferrules/tips and/or investing in ice pick attachments!

For those with wheeled mobility aids, from Rollators to Wheelchairs and beyond: Depending on the condition of your wheels/tyres and whether or not you can easily get spares or ones specific to winter weather what you might be able to do varies, especially when replacing multiple entire wheels can be quite costly. @cripple-punk-dad has a good recommendation on this post regarding using zip ties to add tread to wheels. (credit for the two images of zip ties on wheels and their alt text also goes to cripple-punk-dad)

you can also look at getting wheel socks/slippers/covers for when indoors to protect your floors from any added tread, these come in a whole range of sizes for both smaller caster wheels as well as large wheelchair wheels.

For those who self-propel wheelchairs: make sure you've got good gloves and take a look to see if you can get some good non slip push rim covers!

Those whose mobility aids entail sitting may also want to look into wheelchair specific blankets, and in general everyone should make sure that they have weather appropriate clothing where possible!

It may also be the case that your mobility aid needs are different/higher this season, you do not need to be ashamed of this. Cold weather can worsen symptoms for many people and icey conditions especially can make it harder to safely walk outside, even for able-bodied people. Stay safe out there!

mobility aid users of basically any kind, how do you guys handle the rain?
because for me I use crutches and I don't have a free hand available for something like an umbrella.
do yall just accept that you're gonna be soaking wet?
sincerely a disabled person who's tired of being soaked by the rain

Well I finally got a rollator. Still having mixed feelings about it but it has been a godsend during this flare. I can actually still cook for myself and do some chores.
