What is a Fastnachts-Umzug and why can't you go? :c

I’ll give a quick and simple overview/explanation about what the whole thing is.

‘Fastnacht’ is a traditional festivity/holiday celebrated in germany since ever, I assume since the mid-ages. (German part of switzerland celebrate it too, around a week later then here. I only mention them, as those two are the only ones quite similiar to each other. Other countries which celebrate ‘carneval’ are vastly different, with different meanings and origin.To my knowledge).

The term changes depending which part of germany you are from, but keep a similiar meaning. Bavaria calls it 'Fasching’ north-west germany 'Karneval’  and here in south-west we call it 'Fastnacht’ (depending dialect, the spelling varies). Translated it means 'fasting night’.

It starts at the 11 of november, but fully celebrated around 20 days before eastern (I say ‘around’, as it is different in each village) and ends 30 days before it. The highest points are 'Rosenmontag’ “Rosemonday” (mostly in north-west germany) and 'Fastnachts- Dienstag’ (south/south-west germany). Followed by 'Aschermittwoch’ “Ashwednesday”, where everthing ends. Then the fasting days start (it is a religious thing, but Fastnacht also gets celebrated to disband winter).

What does one do on these days? You dress up, visit 'Prunksitzungen’ (everyone gather in a big hall, drink and eat, while different people tell jokes or dance, to explain it in a very simple way, haha!) or visit “Fastnachtsumzüge” (they are like parades going through cities/villages, where people from various clubs stand on decorated wagons and throw candy into the peoples masses, or flowers, sometimes plushies and sometimes sparkling wine bottles -no no, they carefully hand it to the people, no worries ;D-, clubs who make music called -guggemusik-, dancers, artistical purfling. Those parades are also liked to send political messages..more in bigger cities like Köln.) Point is to have a good time, fun and celebrate together.

It is some sort of a holiday here! German carneval! Though depending on the region, it is called either carneval, Fasching (a different word for carneval) Or..as we call it here ‘Fastnacht’ (translated it means ‘fast/fasting night’).

It is celebrated to cast out the winter, but also -in religious terms- to celebrate before the fasting time begins (mostly for us roman catholic people..but hardly any ever does it anymore, aside those closly affiliated to the church).

Rosenmontag (’Rosemonday’) and Fastnachtsdienstag (’Fastnight tuesday’) are the peak of this whole holiday (we also call it the 5. season). Normally it begins on the 11.11., but everyone celebrates it in february..for like almost two weeks.

At day there are parades through plenty of cities, on individual and every year newly designed carriages (often involved with political statements and things going on here in germany..to point various problems out in a funny way), dance-groups and a lot more. There are tons of candies thrown into the masses of people watching the parade. People of all ages dress up with all sorts of different costumes (you don’t have to though), everyone is in a great mood, singing and celebrating.

There is more to it, but I hope I gave you a general picture of our carneval here. It is a really fun holiday (of course there are also people who dislike it |D). You need to see it by yourself =D
