I think it's really interesting that Rusty also saw the thing he desired in the lake.

Like, one would think that since he's a mech, he doesn't really have emotions (I thought that whilst watching). He was built to have a specific purpose; to not fail a fire wielder.

But that changes as he realises that he has to protect them all. All fire wielders.

Like even after Kai kinda disowned him, saying that he doesn't need him, Rusty still chose to serve him.

In the lake, he saw his master and he could've thought to himself that it could finally be like the old days, but no. He didn't succumb to those illusions.

Rusty realised his purpose and chose to act.
