What animes will I be watching in Winter 2023? (+ Staff Roundup) - Part 2

A bit later than I wanted this out as I was incredibly sick, but here I will be continuing on about what animes I will be watching in Winter 2023

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Direction: Masuyama Ryouji Series Composition: Masuyama Ryouji, Yokoo Tarou Character Design: Nakai Jun Studio: A-1 Pictures

Truth be told, I know almost nothing about the NieR franchise except for the character designs which are very aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Video games adaptation has always been hit or miss, but I do think the staff lined up here does make this series have a greater opportunity for a better adaptation. Yoko Taro the creator of the game himself will be working as series composition alongside Masuyama Ryouji, so we can at the very least expect something that isn't too far off from Taro's own vision. Masuyama Ryouji has been an A-1 Pictures lifer for a while now working on shows like the Great Pretender and Blend-S, I was a bit surprised when I first saw the Nier PVs. The direction and colors went in a much more cinematic direction than most of Ryouji's other works, lacking the colors and more expressive personality in the characters. This is also one of the first more "serious" series he's had a role in so that likely also has an effect. I'm fairly curious about how this series turns out, but I don't have too much to say about it based on the trailer and staff for now. The trailer looks fairly solid, albeit a little drab and the staff seems good if a bit mismatched.

Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister! Direction: Fujii Shingo Series Composition: Yokote Michiko Character Design: Imamura Ryou Studio: Studio Bind

Studio Bind is one of the most promising new studios we have seen in a very long time. Their work on Mushoku Tensei was honestly breathtaking. Now they're back with quite a different project in Onimai. Similar to Mushoku Tensei however, a lot of the staff here does not have much experience in leading their own production in a significant role. Bind wants to take chances with their anime with younger, less experienced staff members which continues to be great to see. Looking at the PVs for this series suggests that the gamble paid off. The character designs by Imamura Ryou are adorable, it's relatively simple but allows for such expressive movement and facial expressions. The way they are colored makes them appear almost 3 dimensional in certain shots. The composition by Akane Fushihara also adds a lot to it. A lot of the shows she's done composition will also have this slight layer of fuzziness that helps to blend in the many colors of the show perfectly, while not overdoing it. You can see this in Spy X Family and No Game, No Life. I'm excited to see Fujii Shingo in action, as I'm not familiar with him at all, but if Bind has picked him to work on this project, he must have done some significant work that impressed them in the past. The show looks great, and the manga has a positive reception. I will definitely be watching this show in Winter 2023.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale Direction: Suzuki Youhei Series Composition: Minakami Seishi Character Design: Iizuka Haruko Studio: J.C. Staff

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale has caught on my eye a lot more than a lot of other people's. The combination Iizuka Haruko's character design and Suzuki Youhei's direction coming together is thoroughly exciting for me. Haruko has worked on so many wonderful character designs such as in School-Live!, Children of the Whales, and of course Josee, The Tiger and the Fish. Her designs have a distinctive soft look to them, yet they never lose their sharp features like a lot of softer designs tend to do. They truly stand out among most character designs and the color pairing that typically goes with her characters is for the most part very pretty. Youhei on the other hand, I have been impressed by his direction in the past, he has very creative ideas on using lighting and how to emphasize a very important scene with clearly limited production. He's good at working around a limited staff. From the footage I've seen so far, this series is helmed by a very nice group of animators to go along with his direction. From the glimpse of movement here and there, they're animated fairly well and look similar quality to cuts seen in The Executioner and Her Way of Life, which is one of J.C. Staff's better-looking shows in recent years. It's not often we get a shojo series that looks as visually unique as this show here, as often time shojo animes tend to get unfortunately stuck with rather bland character designs, which is a shame because there are so many underrated shojos with amazing stories that get overlooked because of that. I have high expectations for this series and it's one of the series I'm most looking forward to in this season that doesn't have a lot of things that stand out.

The Fire Hunter Direction: Nishimura Junji Series Composition: Oshii Mamoru Character Design: Saitou Takuya Studio: Signal MD

Probably the most visually "interesting" show of the season, a blast from the 2010s, we have The Fire Hunter helmed by veteran director Nishimura Junji who hasn't been doing as well recently. He had some interesting ideas in Vlad Love, which was a visually decent show, but was far off the filter and lack any substance to support it. The storyline is this series is a mystery as it's based on a novel, that we have no translations of in English. The footage in the trailer portrays a very nostalgic art style that we've seen a lot more in the 2010s, which appealed to me greatly, but the production quality has to be brought to question a bit. There are many awkward cuts prevalent through the PVs we do have of the show and the way the show has been cut is also very weird. There's a usage of the dolly zoom in the first PV that just looked incredibly off as if the camera zooming out was morphing the characters themselves. Sorry if this is sounding a little negative for a series I will be watching, but it has to be said I am a little worried about the sustainability and consistency of this project, however as this season is a bit dry, I'll be giving it a watch anyways just simply due to the very classic art style and interesting premise that stands out from the more generic plot summaries this season.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Direction: Mankyuu Series Composition: Konparu Tomoko Character Design: Kanou Miyako Studio: Zero G, Liber

Mankyuu is a director whose rise to fame has mostly come through his early flash animations. Now he will be directing a romantic shojo series and from the footage we have, it looks fairly nice. The composition thanks to Tomomi Saito, makes the scenes feel more cinematic than they likely would have been without any of the filters applied. It gives the character designs a great sense of depth and makes the show feel more "premium" than it is. Zero-G has been not been a very good studio, a lot of their works are not the best looking nor are they the best animated, just a very mediocre list of work they have and this seems like the best-looking series they've ever produced, possibly through the collab with Liber who is a total mystery in their own right as this is their first anime. It will be very interesting if the rest of the show will look as dynamic as the trailers but I have hope. So, you have two characters seemingly in a very cute relationship with a visually appealing trailer, what's not to like? Seems simple and easy to explain to me why I'm watching this.

Conclusion: And that's it for now... There might be some shows or season 2s I end up watching that I didn't talk about in this list. If I do pick them up I will talk about it in my first episode impressions when they roll around. At the moment I'm kind of considering watching the old Trigun so that I can watch the upcoming sequel/reboot/remake? I don't exactly know what it is, but it looks great for a fully 3D anime and got me interested.

NieR Automata:

Game:

NieR Automata is a 2017 action, single player, role-playing game from the Drakengard series. It is developed by Platinium Games and published by Square Enix. The game was originally released for the Playstation 4 and Windows via Steam, the following year an Xbox One port was also published. A Nintendo Switch port was also released in 2022.

The Artist for this game is Akihiko Yoshida A Journey through Akihiko Yoshida's Art Style (youtube.com) , known for his work in the Final Fantasy series, and the lead for character design, Uuya Nagai and Toshiyuki Itahana.

The story explores the themes of finding value in life and looking at the reason people kill. It fits into the theme of dreams and destruction or gods, as humans in the game are represented as 'gods' which the Androids are fighting for and it covers the destruction of those gods (humanity). It takes place in a post apocalyptic setting of 11945AD where there is a war between the human-made androids and an invading army of machines created by plant-like Aliens.

The plot revolves around two main characters, 2B and 9S. The two are sent to clear machine threats and discover, on their mission, that the machines are replicating human societies and concepts. There is a God type theme here, in that they have to battle Machines that have named themselves Adam and Eve and, in doing so,2B and 9s learn that the Aliens have been dead for a long time and were killed by the machines they had created after the Machines' intelligence outgrew their own and that Humanity has also perished. Humanity's only hope is a Moon-based server, which holds their genetic remains. 2B syncs with YoRHa, called A2. YoRHa plays a big part in providing the myth of the teams survival to maintain a morale and give androids a god to fight for. 'Become as gods' is a narrative theme in both the game and anime, referring to the humans and the aliens who were the creators of the androids and machines and their progression to becoming more like their creators as they gain emotions.

Anime:

A-1 Pictures animated this. It was directed by Yoko Taro and Ryouji Masuyama. The character designer and animation director was Jun Nagai, and the art director was Hirofumi Sakagami. The artists were Akihiko Yoshida and Kazuma Koda.

In the anime the story is that Earth is invaded by aliens and their Machine Lifeforms and nearly drive humanity to extinction. The humans take refuge on the moon, where they build androids to enable them to retake Earth. I found a really good poster for the anime:

YoRHa No. 2 Type B (2B): I have included images of this character from the game and the anime.

2B is one of the main protagonists, and a soldier for YoRHa, and android task force fighting against alien made machine lifeforms. She wears a blindfold, which i believe may be to indicate how she was brainwashed to not show emotions and follow all orders unquestioningly. The black colours of her design suggest that she is limited to a 'black and white' view of the situation since she firmly believes in what YoRHa command are telling her. When crating 2B, Akihiko was asked to design a character which would be fun to cosplay. 2B is equipped with two weapon slots and an array of weapons to find within the game.

9S:

9S is another one of the main protagonists in Nier, he is the male equivalent of 2B however, he focuses less on melee combat and more on hacking the enemy. 9S is a scouting unit compared to 2B, who is a unit specially designed for combat. This comparison is shown in the game as when you play as 2B, you have two weapons and do not have the ability to hack enemies, however when you play as 9S you only have 1 weapon but can hack enemies to explode, control, pilot, or alternatively; damage them if they have too much health to be destroyed in one hack.

2B's main swords Virtuous Contract and Virtuous Treaty:

These are the two weapons that 2B uses in the starting tutorial and cutscenes, they are also the weapons that are directly tied to her and are used on most of her figures and fan/official artworks.

These are 9S's main weapons which he is also shown with in most cutscenes/artwork, although it is mainly the Cruel Oath that he is shown with since he only wields one weapon at a time.

Weapon stories:

All weapons in the game have stories in their descriptions which tie either to the characters or to some other background. The main weapons used by 2B and 9S have weapon stories that fit together as if telling the same story from different view points, although 9S's weapon stories show more detail as he shows more emotion in the game and 2B shows much less emotion as all androids are told not to show emotions and she feels she must follow the rules. 9S doesn't care about showing his emotions though.

The Aniplex Online Fest 2022 revealed on Saturday that the television anime adaptation of Square Enix and Platinum Games' NieR:Automata action role-playing game will premiere in January 2023. The official website of the "Blend.S" anime series has updated with three new bits of news ^_^

Firstly, the airing date of Episode 1 has been revealed as the 7th of October at 24:30 on Tokyo MX

Secondly, a new key visual has been posted up, which you can see on top

And thirdly, the names of the additional voice cast was listed, which goes as: - Atsumi Tanezaki as Amano Miu - Sora Tokui as Kanzaki Hideri - Tomoaki Maeno as Dino - Tatsuhisa Suzuki Akizuki Kouyou

For those who don't know, this anime is based on the manga by Nakayama Miyuki which takes place in a cafe where each of the five waitresses have been assigned to play a certain role - Sadistic, Tsundere, Imouto, Oneesan and Idol

Sakura Nomiya has just joined the cafe, and as per her bad luck has managed to get the role of Tsundere. Problem is, Nomiya's personality is far from the cold-hot nature of tsun...

"Blend S" TV Anime Adaptation Confirmed For October 2017

The official site for the Blend S anime adaptation has opened and announced that the anime adaptation will run in October with A-1 Pictures handling production, not long after being confirmed in the latest issue of Manga Time Kirara Carat.

  Along with A-1 Pictures, the following preliminary staff list has been confirmed below, with the key visual following. The anime adaptation is based off of Miyuki Nakayama's 4koma manga about a new café worker that takes on a sadistic personality to satisfy customers as the cafe asks her to take on the roler to fulfill her employment duty and is aided by her perpetual scowl.

Great Pretender, svelati il cast e un primo trailer della serie animata

Il nuovo anime originale targato WIT Studio debutterà in Giappone a luglio e sarà distribuito in streaming da Netflix.

Pubblicati una nuova immagine promozionale e un primo trailer di “Great Pretender”, la nuova serie originale di 23 episodi in produzione presso WIT Studio (Rolling Girls, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress), che farà il suo debutto sulle tv giapponesi a luglio e sarà distribuita in streaming su Netflix, prima in Giappone e poi nel resto del mondo.

L’anime è diretto da Hiro Kaburagi (91 Days, My Little Monster), mentre la sceneggiatura è curata da Ryouta Kosawa (Gamba: Gamba to Nakama-tachi). Il character design è ad opera di di Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Punta al Top 2! Diebuster) e la colonna sonora è stata composta da Yutaka Yamada (Tokyo Ghoul, Vinland Saga).

TV Anime "Blend S" tiết lộ hình ảnh, dàn diễn viên và ngày công chiếu.

Trang web chính thức của "Blend S" - TV Anime sắp được chuyển thể từ manga 4 khung hình của Miyuki Nakayama hôm nay đã tiết lộ thêm hình ảnh mới, các diễn viên mới cùng việc xác nhận ngày lên sóng. Phim sẽ được chiếu trên Tokyo MX, Tochigi TV, Gunma TV, và BS11 lúc 24h 30, hay là 0h30 ngày 8 tháng 10 năm 2017. Sau đó sẽ được chiếu trên Kansai TV, TV Aichi, và AT-X. Những diễn viên mới bao gồm:

Atsumi Tanezaki trong vai Miu Amano, cô thường đeo kính và còn là một người vẽ doujin. Cô là hầu gái "chị cả" ở Stile, nhưng rất dễ bị kích động.

Anzu Haruno trong vai Mafuyu Hoshikawa. Nhìn bé tí nhưng cô là 1 sinh viên đại học. Cô thường khá điềm tĩnh nhưng cứ làm việc vào là như kiểu "em gái", lấp lánh. Cô rất yêu thích anime dành cho trẻ em. Thế nên ở quán, cô được gọi là hầu gái "em gái"

 Ryouji Masuyama (Gurren Lagann Parallel Works' "Drill the Heavens with Your XXX!!!" director, The IDOLM@STER)  đang chỉ đạo bộ phim tại A-1 Pictures. Go Zappa (Koihime Musō, NAKAIMO - My Little Sister Is Among Them!, Chronicles of the Going Home Club) là giám sát kịch bản/phụ trách series. Yousuke Okuda (Is the order a rabbit?) đang thiết kế nhân vật, và Tomoki Kikuya (Squid Girl, Eromanga Sensei) soạn nhạc.

Câu chuyện xoay quanh Maika, 1 cô gái trẻ đang làm việc tại 1 quán cà phê, nơi mà mọi nhân viên đều có 1 đặc điểm nhất định khi phục vụ khách, như "tsundere" hay "little sister". Và với ánh mắt cực kì khó chịu của Maika, quản lí đã yêu cầu cô trở thành hầu gái "Do S" (cực kì nghiêm khắc). Manga ra mắt lần đầu trên tạp chí Manga Time Kirara Carat của Houbunsha năm 2013, và Nakayama đã xuất bản series vào năm 2014. Houbunsha đã xuất bản tập 3 vào 27 tháng 1 năm 2017, và tập 4 sẽ lên kệ vào ngày 27 tháng 10 tới đây.
