Spoilers! Angel series 1

I’m rewatching Angel after about 10 years. I’ve got as far S01xE13 and I’ve been struck by how much it seems Doyle was just a placeholder for Wesley. Whedon clearly intended for Wesley to be a main in the show, but, as Angel went to LA alone, it would’ve been unnatural to have both Cordelia and Wesley there right from the beginning.

So there was Doyle, but only as a temporary fill-in. As soon as he died, Wesley was introduced without barely any time for Angel and Cordelia, or the audience, to grieve before we have Wesley’s obnoxiousness forced onto us. I used to like Wesley, but his introduction was too soon and the writers were apparently wasting no time in filling the hole Doyle left with the character they actually wanted. This pissed me off, and the other characters are only paying lip service to grief. They even had Angel and Wesley doing the slightly touchy-feely thing Angel and Doyle had going on. I’m a writer and this is not at all how I would have done it.

I think there should have been a few episodes of just Angel and Cordelia alone before Wesley was introduced. We need the characters to actually feel the loss and for the audience to see and feel it too. As it is, we had a few minutes in episode 10 and a few mentions in following episodes, but that was it.

And no, I’m not suggesting they should have sat around moping.
