The birthday party was around dinner, mum and papa wanted to make sure I’d be back from classes for it. Papa was officially an ��adult” adult, no more young years for him. Emily was also now a kid not a toddler, still a little genius though.

Also I absolutely copied the colour scheme from their generation rules posts (as well as the icons on the above and below pic) so all credit for the aesthetics go to them!

Oh wow so here we are at generation TWO? That's pretty amazing considering I didn't know if I'd even make it through generation one without losing interest. 48 hours from now we'll continue our journey BUT first person posts will be from Byron's view instead of Layla's.

I promised my man plain toast (i.e. just butter) if he would smile for me in the photos and I think he did!

Malcolm: Yes. That way you can move back to Oasis Springs and intern at the company while you study. You've spent far too long here

His hand moved to my cheek and he pulled me in for a kiss before I could object.

Layla: I thought I heard you down here

Byron: I couldn’t decide if I wanted to snack or play

Layla: *sighs* Could you let me in the fridge at least

Byron: Yeah I called her this morning. She’s doing great, Windenburg suits her. She has several guys sniffing round obviously

Layla: Are you okay with that

Byron: *shrugs* We’re not a thing any more. Why shouldn’t she have fun

Fun would be all it was. She was dedicated to her study, and she’d said she didn’t want to be distracted from her goal. Yeah, I figured any guy she deemed worthy enough would be a temporary fling. Still, some part of me got sick imagining her being intimate with anyone else. I know, I know, I was a hypocrite.

When I got back to the accommodation everyone was ready to head to the beach. We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather. Coraline was desperate to dive in the ocean while I watched over Emily. Mum and Art hung back, having a moment.

I couldn’t deny I’d been wrong about the two of them, they did love each other. I could see it in how she gravitated towards him, and how intensely he looked at her, like he was trying to permanently etch her in his mind. You may think with a love like theirs I believed in ever after... but they hadn’t taught me that.

Mum’s love had taught me you can get it wrong. You may think you’re in love but you might have not even met your person yet. So should I settle on the first girl I felt such a strong connection to? Maybe I was wrong, as wrong as she was when she thought she loved Malcolm. I can still remember her telling toddler me how much she loved him, like she believed it with her whole heart.

And Art, well he taught me that love won’t always be stereotypical. What’s more stereotypical than high school sweethearts? So many tacky romance movies or novels follow a couple who meet young. Ignoring my Landgrabb blood for a minute, would I just be blindly following tradition to stay with Meli?

But Samson was kissing her again and Coraline knew the labels didn’t matter much to her. If he wanted to kiss her, and maybe one day even woohoo, then she was the happiest girl in the world for it.

Welcome to the good part of the story, my part of it. Well mine and... nah, I'm getting ahead of myself if I mention her this second. I gotta start like mum did, back when I was a fresh young adult. Actually, screw it, let's go way way back. Not dinosaur back but little me back.

There we go. Wasn't I cute? All a sham really. Judging from the outfit this was one of the times Naggy Nanny Nancy pushed her way in to visit us. If I had to say where my tendency to see the glass half empty came from, it was having that woman constantly call me Brian. Grandad may be decent but she... you'll see.

Byron: I’m not saying there is anything wrong with it or with you. I’ve just figured out that I don’t think it’s for me

Byron: I still want to see you just not for woohoo. You’re a great bass player and musician and friend but if you don’t want to try making a real go of us then it can’t be romantic, and we can’t woohoo any more
