How Funding Affected my Journalism Jobs
The different places I’ve worked as a journalist, and in related fields, have all had different funding. Here are my experiences at different places–and it seems to me that grant-funded stuff is the best.
Internship at Nat Geo
Grants sponsored both of the other interns, but not me. Nat Geo makes a lot of its money through things like books at TV.
Mine was low-paid, but probably normal for an internship in 2016? LOVED the experience. Freelance at Nat Geo afterward was MUCH better paid. $14/hour part-time. IDK how much the grant-funded interns made. 2016.
Fellowship at PBS Newshour
A grant from the National Science Foundation funded me, but PBS is state-sponsored media. Interestingly, that’s a huge red flag in China and Russia, but I found the US-funded Public Broadcasting Service very fair to its subjects. Good experience, but even worse pay, at $13/hour full-time. 2016-2017
Job at Newsweek
Their funding is from clicks. This place was crazy bad and paid garbage. Everyone hated it and almost everyone quit, unless they were being fired for making a living wage. Some people even got fired for accurately reporting on the company itself on assignment from their editors–there was no obscuring it, that was cited as their reason for termitation. Newsweek is Hellfire and damnation. I suspect the nonsense demand for 5 stories/day/person and silly demand that we make them go viral stemmed from the following: the fact that the company primarily made its money from clicks and higher-ups didn’t appear to care about the long-term reputation of the company or its reporters, and perhaps an ego-fueled refusal to try to understand what actually got clicks. $39k/year. 2017-2018
Freelance at VOX
Funded by clicks/ads and grants at the time, but halfway through they started a contribution campaign. The difference I noticed between VOX and Newsweek was that VOX practices were smarter and they actually paid attention to analytics and sane business practices. Also, it's much easier to qualify for and get grants if you're actually doing good journalism, so I don't believe that Newsweek's policy of "lots of garbage" was actually business-savvy in any way.
Vox was a good experience, even though I wasn’t working as a journalist, but doing SEO/social media for journalists. $35/hour, then $50/hour part-time. Then I was laid off due to the pandemic. 2019-2020
Freelance at Alzheimer's Association
Remote, not really journalism, but I liked it anyway. Nonprofit, so, funded by donations and grants. $65/hour part-time. 2021
Job at Bay Nature
My job was entirely funded by a grant. Odd situation–I got the grant and I could bring it to any legit journalism employer. Bay Nature was supposed to contribute 40% of my salary but flexibility happened and they just paid health insurance and such. They got basically no money at all from clicks, like, pennies a year. Not much from subscriptions. They have fundraisers, and at the time, there were 3 writers/editors and 2 fundraisers on staff. Later they hired another writer whose entire salary was paid by a philanthropist, and then I’m told they got another salary funded by a UC Berkeley journalism grant program. So, like half of their editorial staff was grant-funded.
Great experience, but low pay for the Bay Area. $50k/year, all from Poynter-Koch, 2021-2022.
Freelance at Politifact
A nonprofit and they probably get lots of grants. My particular position was also funded by a grant entirely. Loved it. $250/article fact check. 2022.
Book
REALLY love it. $50k is from MIT Press, which is a not-for-profit, and it gets some grants and endowments. Then I got $56k from a grant from the Sloan Foundation on top.
Future?
I also got $500 (plus gas and hotels) to attend a day of learning with a program called Investing in Wyoming’s Creative Economy, and that means I’m one of 100 people eligible to apply for 10 $25k grants for future projects. The idea is to support creatives to stay in Wyoming and have sustainable businesses here. Maybe do some art that will bring in tourists.
_____________________
Note that a grant sort of does, and sort of doesn’t, mean free money. It means money to support a project that usually has to have a mission and a public good, like educating the public. You don’t pay these back, and the org giving the grants doesn’t require a percentage of the profits or anything. But, for instance, the $50k grant from Poynter-Koch was more like a gift to Bay Nature, so they could pay me, and I worked for a year to actually have the funds.
However, I’m not yet convinced that there is any objectively good funding model to ensure the most fair and accurate journalism. In theory, the capitalistic ones would be the best, but the public desire to read inflammatory stories about how their political enemies are evil, or a different generation is full of idiots, adversely affected the accuracy of headlines at Newsweek IMO.
You might think that the worst funding source would be Poynter-Koch, which is a program run by Poynter and funded by the Charles Koch Institute. But neither Poynter nor Koch even asked me to tell them what I was writing, let alone try to stop me from writing it. (Poynter hosted mentor-led auxiliary groups to talk about our careers/lives and such, so the topics of our articles came up sometimes if we chose to share that.)
Anyway, I’m thinking of writing an article on how funding models affect journalism, for better and worse. There are some high-profile examples of grant funding causing harm. But for now, the above is my experience–pretty much all good, except not enough funding sometimes.

3racha and juyeon
a/n: ship popularity is 1-8 with one being the most popular and 8 being the least! this is rated by stay interaction and not a representation of the member’s feelings toward one another.

bang chan + kang juyeon ♡ bangju
ship popularity: 2/8
first to meet juyeon!!
met in a jyp dance class in june 2014 and slowly started hanging out. they would go spend the little money they had getting a snack after class and ended up seeing each other at least once a day
juyeon and chan eventually found out they were both making their own music quietly and started bouncing ideas off of each other and offering constructive criticism
she was the first to support 3racha when they began working together and single-handedly promoted them herself, sending their music in text chains to her family and friends
chan says she is the ‘racha’ in 3racha because she is the spice, but juyeon is not officially a part of 3racha. she has featured in a few of their songs, namely hoodie season, scene stealers, and 42.
juyeon certainly tends to be chan’s caretaker due to knowing him so well and knowing how stressful the leader position can be.
when it’s just the two of them juyeon forces him to speak in english so she can try to mimick his accent
definitely bros, although sometimes they’re a little flirty as they’re both venus signs (๑>◡<๑)

seo changbin + kang juyeon (chu) ♡ binchu
ship popularity: 1/8
their first impressions were not great tbh
predebut, juyeon found changbin intimidating and unintentionally avoided talking to him, which made changbin think she didn’t like him
however, egged on by chan and jisung, changbin asked juyeon if she wanted to get dinner after practice one day, and he tried hard to show how friendly and warm he is
this plan certainly worked, as juyeon was able to see past the cold exterior and find the soft squishy aegyo on the inside that stays know well
funny enough, the pair found that their personalities were quite compatible once they became comfortable with one another. their temperaments compliment each other well in a opposite kind of way.
while changbin is energetic, outgoing, loud, confident, (leoism) juyeon is soft spoken, shy, and very chilled out at most times. when together, these traits mix, and you can often witness changbin calmer than usual and/or juyeon more excitable than she regularly is
in 2019 miroh era stays noticed a slight difference in their interactions and a dating scandal was endured by the two. however, jyp entertainment commented and denied the allegations, saying that “changbin and juyeon are good friends.”
the denial of the allegations didn’t disprove the theory though. stays consistently have watched their interactions since this point and have grown to believe that they are secretly dating or at the very least have some feelings toward each other. around 70% of stays who believe this don’t mind and support their happiness, while the remaining amount of stays have a known history of not liking juyeon.
typically seen together at most times, both on camera and off camera
bin is always trying to impress juyeon and juyeon is always impressed. it’s a never ending cycle.

han jisung + kang juyeon ♡ yeonsung
ship popularity: 3/8
juyeon was really impressed by jisung when she first met him as he was only 16 at the time and was skilled in dancing, rapping, and singing
she really loved the tone of his voice and the versatility he was able to achieve, which she has always been a little envious about
however, baby jisung, who happened to be more scampish prior to debut, did not like juyeon! upon first meeting he found her soft spoken nature fake and was annoyed by her “over the top” aegyo. he felt that she was putting on an act and didn’t appreciate her dishonesty.
for a while after their initial meeting, jisung was pretty short with her and it was quite obvious he didn’t enjoy her presence. she noticed this and instead of backing off like she may have if it was changbin, juyeon used every opportunity she could to butter him up
it took a couple weeks - and a few rejections of her invitation to hang out - but juyeon finally took a step outside her comfort zone and told jisung that 1) she really liked his voice and made a beat for him based off of this, and 2) she feels that they got off on the wrong foot and would like a chance to try again
this interaction and her authenticity really touched jisung, and it was then that he realized how judge mental he was being. while she was soft spoken and radiated a naturally cute vibe, it wasn’t an act for attention from boys or a mask put on to conceal her real personality. she was really the way she presented herself. and she was good at what she did, too.
as we can see now, jisung and juyeon’s friendship significantly improved and are now very close friends.
jisung now looks up to juyeon as a role model for communication
she was also the one to scold him and hyunjin for beefing lol
besties now!
if chan ever needs a duo to create chaos and misfortune for the day, this is his go to pair.

Park Seo-Bo, a key figure in South Korea’s Dansaekhwa Movement, died this month at the age of 91.
Born in 1931 in North Gyeongsang, a Japanese-occupied region of South Korea, to a family of eight children, he pursued training in traditional painting at Hongik University in Seoul. In 1950, his education was interrupted when he was drafted to serve in the Korean War.
“There was no food, no job opportunity, everything had gone back to ashes; all conventional values and ideas were laid naked and bare.” the artist said in a 2008 interview with the New York Times about the affects of war on him and his peers. He looked at painting as self-referential. “For me, painting has become a mere tool and method to cleanse and purify myself,” he said.
Park Seo-Bo is one of the leading figures in contemporary Korean art, widely acknowledged as the father of the ‘Dansaekhwa’ movement. Encompassing works from the 1970s to this year, this exhibition at White Cube West Palm Beach serves as an introduction to Park’s influential practice, as well as being the first opportunity to see his work in the US since it was shown at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in 2019.
A series of vividly coloured ceramic works made in the past year reveal an artist continuing to innovate into his nineties. In collaboration with a master ceramicist’s studio, Park has worked with wet clay in a similar manner as he has previously when he is manipulating the wet pulp of hanji paper, a medium he uses in other works. For this group of works, successive layers of wet clay slip are pinched and pushed line by line into long, parallel ridges, and, after firing and sanding, contrasting pigments are then carefully applied to the furrows and peaks of the fired surface. This latest evolution of technique and introduction of a new material is true to the energetic, naturalistic materiality and tactility that characterises Dansaekwha.
Park’s use of traditional Korean hanji paper, hand-made from mulberry bark, an earlier innovation dating from the 1980s, is represented here by exceptional large-works in subtle shades of grey-black and in blazing, vibrant red. The remarkable durability of hanji has ensured the survival of some of the most ancient scriptures of Buddhism in Korea and is integral to the structure of daily life, including being used in wall coverings and door panels. To Park, the material not only offered endless opportunities for experimentation but represented the connection between his work and the natural world which he had begun to regard as essential. When applied on to a canvas backing and soaked with water, the hanji reverted to a pulp that could be pushed and scraped into sculptural forms.
Park mixes pigments that further evoke connections to nature, as well as to personal memory. The black works have the deep, matte darkness of the charcoal and soot that built up in layers around the artist’s childhood hearth, while the vivid red was inspired by the maple forest in autumn foliage around Mount Bandai near Fukushima in Japan. Within the compositions, smooth rectangular areas or ‘windows’ of single colour offer a textural contrast and a ‘breathing hole’, to let the mind rest.
Several exceptional works from the 1970s testify to the epiphany that was to prove so formative to the development of Korean minimalism or ‘Dansaekwha’. Park calls these ‘Myobop’, a word taken from the Chinese characters ‘to draw’ and ‘a method’, which has been translated by the French term ‘Écriture’ (writing). Centring on an exploration of drawing within painting and on the union of action and spirit, they reflect a consistent approach, one that is inextricably linked to time, space and material; concepts that underpin all of Park’s practice. In these works, mark-making becomes akin to breathing and emptiness is achieved through reduction, a process that Park has termed “forgetting the self”. Executed within a single sitting, harnessing an energy flow through meditative action, they combine technical skill with mental focus, within a defined period of time. This method reflects that, for Park, the making of art is rooted in a spiritual methodology, drawing on Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist philosophy as well as the Korean tradition of calligraphy.

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram?
Yes. I think blogging is still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram. Blogging is the process of creating articles with photos, texts, and content, then publishing them on various websites on the internet for people to access and read. Blogging is usually characterized by a more laid-back atmosphere, informal writing, and a fixed format for its content.

According to SEO (Jan 2024), at least 60% of internet users read blogs and 77% of internet users read blogs every day. Information in the form of reading is quicker than through speech. Jonathan Andreas (May 2019) says that the average reader can read on average 241 words per minute whereas the average person can only speak about 100-150 words per minute. Needless to say, reading is undoubtedly a quicker method for consuming information.
GIF by muvana
Other than being a faster means of consuming information, blogging can also be used as a form of culture practice, taste making, and community formation, which can lead to the inclusion or exclusion of certain types of people. For example, a blog showcasing Chinese culture may appeal to a specific group of people that appreciates the tradition but may be uninteresting to others. Other examples of this usage of blogs include health blogs, fashion blogs, and political blogs.
According to Emily Shwake (Feb) in the field of business, business blogging can increase the overall pages on your company website, which leads to the growth of the company’s online presence thereby increasing the chances of potential customers stumbling upon you. A study conducted found that businesses that do not blog receive up to 55% less website visitors compared to those that do. Instead of a short few-seconds advertisement, blogs provide potential customers the chance to know more of the company via FAQs or posting important news or updates (Emily Shwake, Feb). Furthermore, as Emily (Feb) suggests that blogging can increase customer engagement. This can lead to repeat business or the increase of potential customers as current ones share blogs or news with people that may have never heard of the company before. Amanda Hetler (Jun 2022) states that blogging also creates content for social media platforms. By just sharing the link to a blogpost once it has been created, information of a business or company can reach more people.

Connecting with other people is one of the major advantages of blogging (Artem Minaev, May 2024). Blogging is where authentic relationships are built and unlikely friends are met. Blogging in a sense serves as a medium for people to communicate and connect based on their goals, similarities, interests. Therefore, blogging can lead to the unintentional sprouting of communities and public spheres on the internet where internet users come to express their feelings and/or opinions. Adding on, Elin (March 2018) states that blogging grants internet users the ability to voice out their opinions, experiences, stories, and reviews.
There is, however, an unexpected application of blogging. That is blogging as a source of income. Eb Gargano (June 2024) states 5 ways to earn money via blogging which are advertising, affiliate links, sponsored posts, products, and services. As blogging is usually done on websites, advertising is an obvious choice if one chooses to earn income while blogging. The more internet browsers that view your ads (ad impressions), the higher your pay (Eb Gargano, June 2024). Blogging can also help improve one’s writing. After all, blogging delves into the realm of conveying one’s opinions, thoughts, and ideas, and all of these aspects have to be written. Alex Tiffany (December 2023) says that the more you write, the better you will write.

On the contrary, there are cons to blogging that may deter internet users from ever becoming a blogger in the first place. According to Kayla (May 2021), bloggers may end up with nothing in return even after investing tons of time and effort into their blogging career. She compares this to undertaking a costly university degree that may not warrant a path of success. Blogging is simply a risk (Kayla, May 2021). Additionally, Kayla (May 2021) states that businesses may end up repelling potential customers if they do not properly blog their business. If blogging for your business does not build or lead to know-like-factor in customers, then it is only adversely impacting the business. Blogging in today’s world is highly competitive. Distinguishing your blog in the gigantic pool of more than 600 million present blogs is no easy task (Alex Tiffany, December 2023).
Even after considering the downsides, there are many benefits to blogging that make me think that it is still relevant in the age of TikTok and Instagram and that it may stand the test of time.

Understanding Google Algorithm Updates: What You Need to Know
Google is the most dominant search engine in the world, handling over 90% of global searches. One of the key reasons behind its success is its ever-evolving search algorithm. Google constantly refines its search engine algorithms to ensure that users get the most relevant, high-quality results for their queries. But what exactly are Google algorithm updates, and why should you care? More importantly, how can businesses and digital marketers adapt to these updates and stay ahead in SEO?
In this article, we’ll dive into the history of Google algorithm updates, explore some of the most impactful updates, and offer insights on how to optimize your website for these changes. Plus, if you’re looking to become an SEO expert, we’ll show you why joining CADL’s SEO courses in Zirakpur is the perfect way to learn everything you need about mastering Google algorithms.
1. What Is a Google Algorithm Update?
Google’s search algorithm is a complex system used to rank websites and deliver the most relevant search results to users. It takes into account various factors such as the quality of the content, relevance to the search query, page speed, mobile-friendliness, backlinks, and user engagement.
Google regularly updates its algorithm to improve the accuracy and quality of its search results. Some of these updates are minor and go unnoticed by most, while others can significantly impact website rankings. These updates aim to enhance the user experience by filtering out low-quality content and rewarding websites that provide real value.
Key Insight:
Google's algorithm is constantly evolving. By joining CADL's SEO course in Zirakpur, you’ll learn how to optimize your website to meet the changing demands of the algorithm and stay competitive in the digital landscape.
2. History of Google Algorithm Updates
Over the years, Google has rolled out several significant algorithm updates, each with a specific goal in mind. Some of these updates have become famous for the dramatic impact they’ve had on search rankings. Understanding these updates is crucial for any SEO professional.
Here are some of the most impactful updates in Google's history:
a. Panda (2011)
The Panda update was introduced to reduce the rankings of low-quality sites, such as those with thin or duplicate content. It focused on improving search results by promoting high-quality, valuable content and penalizing sites with too many ads, low word count, or keyword stuffing.
b. Penguin (2012)
Penguin targeted spammy link-building practices. Sites that engaged in black-hat SEO techniques, such as buying backlinks or participating in link schemes, saw a sharp drop in their rankings. This update emphasized the importance of natural, high-quality backlinks in improving SEO rankings.
c. Hummingbird (2013)
The Hummingbird update brought a shift towards understanding the meaning behind search queries rather than just matching keywords. Google started to emphasize “semantic search,” which aimed to understand the context and intent behind user searches. This made Google better at answering questions directly and delivering more accurate results.
d. Mobilegeddon (2015)
With mobile search growing rapidly, Google rolled out the Mobilegeddon update to prioritize mobile-friendly websites in search results. Websites that were not optimized for mobile devices saw their rankings decline, while responsive sites got a boost.
e. RankBrain (2015)
RankBrain introduced machine learning into Google’s algorithm. It helped Google better understand ambiguous or complex search queries by identifying patterns in how users interact with search results. RankBrain is now considered one of the top ranking factors.
f. BERT (2019)
BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is an update aimed at better understanding the nuances and context of words in search queries. It allows Google to interpret the meaning behind user queries more effectively, particularly for long-tail keywords or natural language searches.
3. Why Google Updates Matter for SEO
Google algorithm updates are designed to improve the user experience, but they can also cause significant fluctuations in website rankings. SEO professionals need to be aware of these updates to ensure their strategies align with Google’s goals. When an algorithm update rolls out, some websites might see a boost in rankings, while others may experience a drop.
Why Do Google Algorithm Updates Matter?
Maintaining or Improving Rankings: A new update might penalize websites with poor content or shady link-building practices, while rewarding those with high-quality, relevant content. If you're not keeping up with updates, your website may lose visibility and organic traffic.
Adapting SEO Strategies: Each algorithm update comes with new guidelines. For example, after the Penguin update, websites had to shift away from spammy backlinks and focus on building genuine, authoritative links. Not staying informed means you could be optimizing your website incorrectly.
Enhancing User Experience: Google’s updates are always focused on improving the user experience. By aligning your website with Google’s vision, you’re also ensuring that users have a better experience when they visit your site.
Key Insight:
Staying on top of algorithm updates is essential for anyone involved in SEO. CADL’s SEO training in Zirakpur will give you the knowledge to understand and adapt to these changes, keeping your website ahead of the competition.
4. How to Adapt to Google Algorithm Updates
Now that you understand the importance of Google algorithm updates, the next step is learning how to adapt. Here are some strategies to ensure your SEO practices remain up-to-date and effective:
a. Create High-Quality Content
Google's ultimate goal is to provide users with the most relevant and valuable content. Focus on creating in-depth, informative, and engaging content that answers users' questions and solves their problems. Avoid thin content, keyword stuffing, and duplicate pages, as these can negatively impact your rankings.
b. Focus on User Intent
With updates like Hummingbird and RankBrain, Google is increasingly focusing on understanding user intent rather than just matching keywords. When developing content, think about what users are looking for and how you can meet their needs. Answer common questions, provide solutions, and offer valuable insights.
c. Optimize for Mobile
With the Mobilegeddon update and the rise of mobile-first indexing, having a mobile-friendly website is no longer optional. Ensure your site is responsive, loads quickly, and provides a smooth user experience on all devices.
d. Build High-Quality Backlinks
Backlinks remain one of the most important ranking factors, but quality matters more than quantity. Focus on earning backlinks from authoritative, reputable websites in your industry. Avoid participating in link schemes or buying backlinks, as these practices can lead to penalties under updates like Penguin.
e. Monitor Your Analytics
After every algorithm update, it's essential to monitor your website's analytics to identify any changes in traffic, rankings, or user behavior. If you notice a drop in traffic or rankings, investigate whether your site is affected by the update and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly.
f. Stay Informed
SEO is an ever-evolving field, and staying informed about Google algorithm updates is crucial. Regularly read SEO blogs, attend webinars, and join online communities to stay updated on the latest changes and trends. At CADL, you’ll gain access to resources and training that will keep you on top of every important SEO update.

Why Mobile-First Design Is the Secret to Higher User Engagement
Open any website on your phone today and chances are it’ll load quickly, fit the screen perfectly, and be easy to navigate with just your thumb. This isn’t by accident. It’s the result of a massive design philosophy shift that has redefined the way digital content is built and consumed: mobile-first design.
In a world where over 60% of global web traffic comes from mobile devices, designing for mobile users first isn’t just good practice—it’s essential. The traditional approach of designing websites for desktop and then shrinking them for mobile is rapidly becoming outdated. Today, brands and businesses are flipping the model—starting with mobile design and scaling up to desktop—because that’s where the audience lives.
So, how exactly does mobile-first design impact user engagement? And why is this concept becoming a non-negotiable part of every digital strategy?
What Is Mobile-First Design?
Mobile-first design is a UX strategy that prioritizes the mobile user experience above all else. Instead of treating mobile as an afterthought, designers and developers create the core experience for small screens first. This includes simplifying layouts, optimizing loading times, streamlining content, and ensuring that navigation is intuitive.
The core idea is this: If your design works flawlessly on mobile, it will likely work well everywhere else too.
Why Mobile Matters More Than Ever
Over the past five years, mobile usage has skyrocketed. Whether it’s shopping, reading news, watching videos, or searching for local services, users are doing it on their phones.
Recent data from Statista (2025) shows that 92% of internet users access the web through their smartphones, and Google reports that 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load. These aren’t just numbers—they are user behaviors shaping digital strategies across the globe.
That’s why, since Google’s mobile-first indexing became the default for all websites in 2019, the need to optimize for mobile has transformed from an SEO trend to a survival tactic.
The Direct Link Between Mobile-First and Engagement
Mobile-first design directly influences user engagement in several key ways:
1. Faster Load Times
Mobile-optimized websites often use lightweight design elements, compressed images, and efficient coding. All of this results in faster loading speeds—a major factor in keeping users engaged. Every extra second your site takes to load can increase bounce rates and decrease conversions.
2. Improved User Experience (UX)
Mobile-first design forces you to simplify and declutter. It removes unnecessary distractions, making it easier for users to focus on the core message or action. Whether it's a product page or a blog post, mobile-first UX enhances readability, tap targets, and navigation—resulting in longer sessions and higher interaction rates.
3. Higher Accessibility
Users don’t want to pinch, zoom, or scroll endlessly. Responsive, mobile-first designs adjust seamlessly across different devices and screen sizes, making your content more accessible and increasing the likelihood of user retention.
4. Lower Bounce Rates, Higher Conversions
A website that looks broken or cluttered on mobile sends a message of carelessness. On the flip side, a clean, intuitive mobile design builds trust and encourages users to engage—whether that means subscribing to a newsletter, buying a product, or reading more content.
Mobile-First SEO: A Must, Not a Maybe
Google doesn’t just prefer mobile-friendly sites—it expects them. Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your content for ranking and indexing.
This means:
Content should be identical on both mobile and desktop.
Structured data must be present on the mobile version.
Metadata (titles, descriptions) must be consistent.
Sites that don’t comply risk being buried in search results, regardless of how well they perform on desktop.

The Role of Core Web Vitals
In 2024, Google rolled out a new update that further emphasized Core Web Vitals—metrics that measure user experience elements like loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability. For mobile-first sites, meeting these standards is crucial.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) should occur within 2.5 seconds.
First Input Delay (FID) should be less than 100 milliseconds.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) should be under 0.1.
Optimizing your mobile-first design with these vitals in mind can significantly improve user engagement and search visibility.
Trends That Are Reinforcing the Mobile-First Mindset
The growth of mobile commerce, voice search, and mobile apps continues to shape user expectations. In fact:
Mobile commerce is expected to account for 73% of total e-commerce sales by the end of 2025.
Voice search is being used increasingly on mobile for tasks like finding local businesses or setting reminders.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are closing the gap between mobile websites and native apps, offering faster and more app-like experiences directly from the browser.
Clearly, the mobile-first philosophy isn’t just about design anymore—it’s about creating an entire digital strategy optimized for the mobile ecosystem.
Emerging Markets and Growing Demand
With internet penetration deepening across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in India, the demand for mobile-optimized content is soaring. Marketers and designers alike are under pressure to understand user behavior on mobile and build accordingly.
As digital learning and digital business adoption rise, regions known for tech and education hubs are seeing a surge in demand for mobile-first design expertise. Enrolling in a Digital Marketing Course Hyderabad, for example, gives students and professionals an edge by teaching them how to blend UX principles, mobile-first strategy, and performance metrics—all skills that are becoming indispensable.
Final Thoughts
We’ve entered an era where digital interactions are predominantly mobile. The way users search, shop, read, and communicate has fundamentally shifted to smaller screens. And if brands want to keep up, their design philosophies need to shift with it.
Mobile-first design is not a buzzword. It’s not a temporary fix. It’s a user-centered approach that prioritizes functionality, speed, and clarity—and ultimately drives better engagement. Whether you're a developer, marketer, designer, or business owner, now’s the time to make mobile-first your baseline.
As this shift gains momentum, cities that are adapting quickly are also creating a demand for skilled professionals who understand not just the “how” but the “why” behind these changes. For those looking to step into this growing field or enhance their career with the latest strategies, enrolling in a respected SEO Course Institute in Hyderabad could be the move that aligns you with where the digital world is heading.

Why SEO Experts Should Keep Up with Google Updates!
The process of search engine optimization, or SEO, is continuous rather than one-time. One of the biggest reasons for this is simple: Google keeps updating its algorithm. For SEO experts, staying updated with these changes is not just useful — it's absolutely essential.
In this article, we’ll explore why SEO experts must keep track of Google algorithm updates, how these updates impact rankings, and what can happen if you fall behind.
What Are Google Algorithm Updates?
Google uses complex algorithms to determine which web pages should appear in search results and in what order. These algorithms consider hundreds of variables, including backlinks, website speed, content quality, and keyword relevancy.
Facebook periodically modifies these algorithms to enhance the caliber of search results. These updates can be small tweaks or major changes, like:
Panda (2011): Targeted low-quality content
Penguin (2012): Penalized spammy backlinks
Hummingbird (2013): Focused on semantic search
RankBrain (2015): Introduced AI for better search results
BERT (2019): Improved understanding of natural language
Helpful Content Update (2022): Rewarded user-first content
Some updates affect only a few websites, while others impact millions overnight.
Why It’s Important for SEO Experts to Stay Updated
1. To Protect Website Rankings
When Google releases an update, the search engine rankings of many websites can shift. If you're not aware of a change and how it affects your site, you may suddenly see a drop in traffic, leads, or sales. SEO experts who keep up with updates can quickly adjust strategies to minimize losses and recover fast — a key benefit of investing in Affordable SEO Services in Delhi that focus on long-term growth.
2. To Understand What Google Values
Each update tells SEO professionals something about what Google values — whether it's high-quality content, better user experience, mobile-friendly design, or faster page load times. By analyzing the updates, experts can fine-tune their SEO strategies to align with Google's preferences.
3. To Avoid Penalties
Many algorithm updates are designed to catch and penalize black-hat SEO tactics like keyword stuffing, link schemes, or low-quality content. If you continue to use outdated or risky practices, your site could be penalized or even removed from search results. Being aware of updates helps SEO experts stay compliant with the latest rules.
4. To Stay Ahead of the Competition
The SEO landscape is competitive. Businesses that adapt quickly to algorithm changes often gain a competitive edge. If your competitors are staying updated and you're not, they may outrank you, leading to lower visibility and missed opportunities.
5. To Deliver Better Results to Clients
For agencies and freelance SEO professionals, client satisfaction depends on results. If rankings drop and you don’t know why, it reflects poorly on your service. But if you’re proactive and can explain changes and adapt accordingly, you build trust and long-term relationships.
How SEO Experts Can Stay Updated
Here are a few easy methods for SEO specialists to remain informed:
1. Follow Google’s Official Channels
Google often announces major updates via its official blog or on Twitter through its Google Search Central account. Regularly checking these should become a habit.
2. Subscribe to Trusted SEO Blogs
Websites like Search Engine Journal, Moz, Search Engine Land, Neil Patel, and SEMrush often break down new updates, explain their effects, and share practical advice.
3. Join SEO Communities
Online forums, Facebook groups, and LinkedIn communities are great places to discuss updates and share experiences. You can learn how others are responding and adjust your approach accordingly.
4. Use SEO Tools with Update Alerts
Tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, Moz, and Rank Ranger often track volatility in search rankings. A recent upgrade to the algorithm is probably the cause of any abrupt changes.
5. Monitor Website Analytics
A sudden drop or spike in traffic can indicate that your website has been affected by an update. By analyzing the data, you can spot patterns and take corrective steps.
Real-World Examples of Updates Impacting SEO
Here are two examples that show why staying updated is crucial:
Example 1: The Panda Update
Google’s Panda update targeted websites with thin or duplicate content. Many content farms saw their rankings collapse overnight. Those who were aware of the update quickly improved their content quality and recovered. Others who ignored it took months or years to regain their position.
Example 2: The Mobile-Friendly Update
Google began favoring web pages that are optimized for mobile devices in 2015. Businesses that didn’t optimize their websites for smartphones lost visibility on mobile searches. SEO experts who anticipated the change ensured their clients’ sites were responsive, giving them a significant advantage.
What Happens If You Don’t Keep Up?
Failing to stay aware of Google’s algorithm changes can have serious consequences:
Sudden drop in rankings
Loss of organic traffic
Fewer leads and conversions
Penalties or deindexing
Negative ROI for your SEO efforts
Damaged client trust or reputation
SEO is about being proactive, not reactive. If you wait too long to react, the damage might already be done.
Conclusion
Your SEO approach should adapt to the frequent changes in Google's search algorithms. For SEO experts, staying informed about updates is not just good practice; it’s a critical part of success.
SEO experts that stay abreast of algorithm updates can:
Protect and improve rankings
Align with Google’s best practices
Avoid penalties
Serve clients better
Stay ahead of the competition
Staying up to date is your finest weapon in the realm of SEO, where information truly is power. Be sure to choose a team that actively follows and adapts to these changes. Only those who understand the value of Complete SEO Services — from on-page optimization to staying ahead of Google updates — can ensure long-term digital growth.

the art of shameless adoration

synopsis: changbin visits the eldest dancers in the practice room and once left alone binchu react totally reasonably when things get hot and sweaty
date: march 2nd, 2019
era: pre-miroh
word count: 1.8k
featuring: kang juyeon, seo changbin, lee minho
warnings: n/a!
a/n: i swear something other than binchu will be coming soon <3
unintelligible gibberish of counts from the experienced dancers echoed into the quiet halls of the jyp building as changbin opened the practice room door just enough to peek inside. minho and juyeon were in the center, watching themselves closely in the mirror as they polished up the details of their most recent choreography, cheeks red and hot to show how long they’d been doing this.
“hello my friends whom i love,” changbin stepped into the room with a beaming grin “looking good! how long have you been here?”
the eldest wiped the sweat from his brow as he checked his watch, eyebrows jumping in shock. “since 5…”
“what time is it?” juyeon panted
“bed time” “ten”
the boys answered simultaneously, though changbin was the one to actually answer her question. minho looked at him wildly, seemingly perplexed at their synchronicity, and turned back to juyeon.
“i think that’s enough for tonight?” his pitch raised at the end, making this statement sound more like a suggestion. what he meant was he was done for the day, but he already knew she’d either agree to go home without a fight or be here for another hour and a half. so when she looked back at herself in the mirror as if to size herself up, he could guess what she was gonna say.
“one more time.” she giggled with an awareness of her own ridiculousness. “just one more time and i’ll be good.”
“i think i was okay one more ago, actually” minho chuckled through heavy breaths and slapped a hand on changbin’s shoulder “you make sure she gets home soon, kay? we don’t need another pockey-stick-incident this comeback. i need to go lay down now.”
changbin flashed a thumbs up at minho’s request amidst juyeon’s whines that ‘it was one time forever ago, you don’t always have to bring it up!’ minho mimicked a teasing smooch on his way to snatch his things from the couch and quickly hurried out the door before she could wrangle him into boiling some water for her nightly ramen. once the door closed behind him the two in the room met eyes in the mirror, a mischievous smile on juyeon’s lips.
“okay, ready?”
“i’m doing it with you?”
she laughed “yeah! minho clocked out, it’s time for you to appease me.”
changbin found a smirk on his face at her words and feigned an exasperated sigh as he unzipped his hoodie. “fiiine, but just once!”
“yes!” juyeon bounced giddily to her phone beside the speaker “just once, and then we’ll go home.”
changbin tossed his things aside carelessly as he waited for her to queue the music. he’d just showered before coming to see what they were up to and honestly really didn’t want to practice on top of working out today, but then again, she was right. it was his turn to appease her, and he would do so happily. plus, the mirror made it easier to shamelessly admire her without being told he had a staring problem (lovingly.)
changbin continued to indirectly adore juyeon through the mirror even when she finally started the music and they began to go over the miroh choreography ‘just once.’ and even after something he did reminded her of another choreo which lead her down a different tangent. even when she said ‘really, just one more. boxer is almost right!’ changbin only stopped re-committing her features to memory when he could barely stand anymore, the music fading out as he put his hands on his knees with panting breaths.
“up.” juyeon wheezed, her fingers interlocked behind her head. she’d learned a long time ago that bending over compressed the diaphragm when you were trying to catch your breath and strictly enforced the correct way to do it ever since. it hurt like hell, but it was better for your body, so changbin grit his teeth and stood tall on his way to slump into the couch.
juyeon kept her fingers joined on her neck until she sat beside him and picked up the water bottle next to her bag. they were close enough that their shoulders almost touched but far enough that they weren’t actually sweating on each other, which was a nice detail even for the touch-starved physical affectionists.
“one more time” he mocked with a smile, using the hem of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his upper lip “just one more time and then we’ll go home”
the older girl’s eyes took over the role of her smile as she held back laughter while taking a swig from the sticker-covered bottle. then, as a symptom of her unending attention to detail when it came to him, juyeon offered her water to changbin who hadn’t brought one when he came in; probably because he wasn’t planning on getting all hot and sweaty when he came to see the dancers in their natural habitat. his mistake, honestly.
changbin’s hand automatically went to reach for the waterbottle before he stopped to ask, “how much is left?”
“finish it. i’m good until we get home.”
and finish it he did. changbin took big gulps from her water and as juyeon watched his adams apple bob she felt herself start to get distracted - reverted into the cavewoman brain that showed up whenever he was around. distracted by how his chest rose and fell with each breath, skin glossy with sweat, lips and cheeks pink.
she cleared her throat quietly as to not raise any suspicion and forced her eyes away in an effort to re-evolve her brain until her mind wasn’t totally consumed by him anymore, just barely glancing in the mirror to see if he had noticed. and of course, just as always, he was looking at her. she did a double take before furrowing her eyebrows at him, which made him laugh.
“what are you doing?”
“same thing that you were!”
“what was i doing?”
changbin chuckled and nodded toward their reflection. “i saw you looking. you are not slick, kang juyeon.”
she now pushed herself up to look at him face-on again, a playful smile on her lips. “do you think you are? you made miroh look totally different because were too busy looking at me to see yourself! i kept going just to see the -” she wiggled her arms about wildly, an obvious over-exaggeration of his performance but it was enough to have him throwing his head back to rest on the couch with an exasperated sigh.
“you are — !!”
“what?” she nudged him with her shoulder to urge him on “i’m what?”
“…you’re dreamy.” he hummed
juyeon now regretted poking him to say more as her face flushed with embarrassment. she laid her head back, too. “yeah, whatever.”
“don’t ‘yeah whatever’ me. take my compliments! accept my love!” changbin spoke with that grouchy voice that made him stick his lips out to pout “you’re beautiful and charismatic and hardworking and should be acknowledged for your efforts - and your results! because you are incredible.”
there was a beat of silence that left changbin out in the cold until she spoke again. “you think so?”
changbin finally lifted his head to look at her incredulously, like there wasn’t a possibility in the world it was the other way around. but he didn’t question why she didn’t claim her boasting rights, instead he gingerly elbowed her side with a smirk. “of course” he cooed “anyone else would say the same thing.”
her nose crinkled in something similar to a wince, eyes on the ceiling. “but…what do you think of me…”
changbin’s eyebrows knitted together. for a moment he had to stop to think of what to say; there was a lot he thought about her because he thought about her a lot. changbin leaned into her shoulder, nudging her with his weight to regain her attention. she lifted her head now, eyes flicking between his - left to right and right to left again. in the few inches of space between them he spoke artlessly, the fondness and sincerity painfully obvious in his tone.
“i think you’re everything, ju.”
juyeon’s gaze fell to his lips again as she analyzed what he said and the corners of her mouth began to curl upward with the warm hum in her chest. she lingered there with her bottom lip caught between her teeth and, after finally pulling her gaze away, noticed the lag before his eyes met hers again. they were darker all of a sudden - like his pupil had swallowed the iris whole - and his cheeks had ripened from a peachy pink to a deep crimson.
there was a moment of stillness as they stared at one another, silent but comfortable, contemplating the same thing; to take the leap or not. both went through the pros and cons they had meticulously organized in their mind over the years as if there would be a clear answer on the next step, but there wasn’t, and just as changbin came to decide he wouldn’t risk it, juyeon decided she would.
the older girl bridged the gap between them nervous yet eager and, tenderly cupping his cheek in her palm, pressed her bitten lips to his - tentative and salty with sweat. it was soft and familiar, not a drop of haste in her touch. it took him a moment to fully believe the reality he had been gifted on this day but, once he realized her lips were on his after years of pushing those feelings away, changbin’s hands found themselves at her waist as if to hold on so he wouldn’t float away. a fuzzy feeling began to take life in his chest, burning red hot like flames licking at his skin. this overwhelming warmth grew with each passing second spent exactly where he’d always dreamed of until it bubbled scalding magma in his throat and erupted into a grin against her lips, which then made her smile, too.
juyeon sat back and pressed her buzzing lips together, a short laugh slipping past the barricade. “we’re in trouble.” her tone was light in contrast to the serious subject matter.
“not yet,” changbin hummed sweetly “we’re just in the practice room.”
“you know what, i think you’re right.” she concurred with a cunning shrug “maybe tomorrow we could just be in the studio?”
“i can make that happen.” he was quick to blurt out an approving response to this suggestion.
juyeon chuckled softly before her fingers moved automatically to tuck her hair behind her ear, catching her lip in her teeth again but this time for a starkly different reason. “um…we do need to talk, though…”
changbin looked at her now from the darkest depths of yearning, dark eyes now glossy and pleading. “not yet. please. leave it for tomorrow. and tonight can just stay like this.”
she sighed softly almost as if to hide the adoring sparkle in her eyes and brushed away the strands of hair tickling his eyelashes. “okay, binnie.”
“…does that mean we can do that again?”
“you know…i think it does!”

Understanding Google Algorithm Updates: What They Are and Why They Matter
If you’ve ever searched for something on Google and instantly found helpful results, you’ve experienced the power of Google’s search algorithm. But have you ever noticed that your website traffic suddenly dropped or that certain websites no longer appear where they used to? That’s likely due to a Google algorithm update.
These updates are a big deal in the world of digital marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and online business. Let’s break down what they are, why they happen, and what you should do about them.
What Is a Google Algorithm?
Google’s algorithm is a complex system used to retrieve data from its search index and deliver the best possible results for a query. In simple terms, it’s a set of rules and calculations that Google uses to decide which web pages show up in search results, and in what order.
The algorithm looks at hundreds of factors like:
Page relevance
Content quality
User experience
Site speed
Mobile-friendliness
Backlinks and domain authority
What Are Google Algorithm Updates?
Google regularly changes its algorithm to improve the quality of its search results. Some updates are minor and happen daily without much impact. Others are major and can dramatically affect rankings for millions of websites.
These major updates are designed to:
Improve search accuracy
Punish low-quality or spammy websites
Reward websites with helpful, trustworthy content
Keep up with changes in user behavior and technology (e.g., mobile usage, AI)
Notable Google Algorithm Updates (Past Highlights)
Panda (2011) – Targeted thin or duplicate content and rewarded sites with original, high-quality content.
Penguin (2012) – Penalized sites using manipulative link-building practices.
Hummingbird (2013) – Focused on understanding the intent behind search queries, not just matching keywords.
Mobilegeddon (2015) – Gave a ranking boost to mobile-friendly websites.
RankBrain (2015) – Introduced machine learning to help better interpret search queries.
Medic (2018) – Impacted health, wellness, and finance sites, emphasizing expertise and trust.
BERT (2019) – Helped Google understand the context and nuance of words in search queries.
Helpful Content Update (2022) – Rewarded sites that produce content genuinely helpful to users, not just written for SEO.
Core Updates vs. Minor Updates
Google also rolls out core updates multiple times a year. These are broad changes to the entire algorithm and often shift rankings across all types of websites. Unlike targeted updates, core updates don’t focus on one issue—they reassess content quality across the board.
Minor updates or “refreshes” happen frequently (almost daily), but they usually cause smaller changes that most users and site owners don’t notice.
How Google Algorithm Updates Affect Your Website
After a major update, you might notice:
A drop in traffic – if your site is considered low-quality or outdated.
A spike in traffic – if your content is relevant, helpful, and well-structured.
No change at all – if your site follows best practices consistently.
If your rankings drop, it doesn’t mean you were “penalized”—it may just mean others are now being rewarded more.
How to Stay Prepared
Focus on Quality Content Write content that genuinely helps your audience. Avoid keyword stuffing or low-effort posts.
Improve User Experience Fast-loading, mobile-friendly, easy-to-navigate websites tend to perform better.
Stay Updated Follow official updates from Google Search Central Blog and SEO news sources like Search Engine Journal or Moz.
Build Trust Make sure your website demonstrates expertise, authority, and trustworthiness—especially in sensitive topics like health or finance.
Audit Your Site Regularly Use tools like Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and SEO checkers to find and fix issues.
Conclusion
Google algorithm updates can be unpredictable, but they all have the same goal: to serve users better, more relevant, and trustworthy information. As a site owner or content creator, your best strategy is to stay consistent with SEO best practices, create genuinely helpful content, and adapt as the web evolves.

From how we scroll through social media to shopping, searching, and connecting, mobile devices rule our daily lives. If your business strategy is not mobile-optimized, you are not just losing opportunities; you are handing them on a platter to your competitors.
Here is the proof that mobile-first marketing is not just about trends but the future of savvy businesses.
1. Everyone Does It on Mobile — and They Never Wait
When was the last time you looked something up without using your phone?
Whether it's for pizza delivery, a plane ticket, or a fresh pair of shoes, consumers expect a fast and easy experience when it comes to mobile.
More than 60% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. That's a flood of potential customers.
If your website's ponderous and difficult to navigate on mobile, you're losing attention fast.
Mobile-first design isn't about downsizing your desktop site; it's about creating experiences with a phone in mind—the device for us today.
Speed, simplicity, and smooth navigation are non-negotiables today.
2. Mobile Optimization Manifests in Improved Conversions
A mobile-friendly strategy does not just improve the user experience; it drives sales.
Rather than unoptimized sites, those that are optimized for mobile have conversion rates that are up to 70% higher.
Here is the reason:
👉 Maintains engagement with speedy load times.
👉 Creates a simple purchase with clear, thumb-friendly buttons.
👉 Streamlined checkouts lessen the chances of cart abandonment.
Just keep it easy to say "yes" to customers, and they will.
This is why some pioneering companies, like Digileap Services, have changed their entire digital marketing strategy to a mobile-first approach, with the assurance that each touchpoint from ad to checkout will be frictionless and fabulous on all devices.
3. Mobile Love SEO (Google Loves It Too)
If you want your business to stand out when Google knocks, you must spare time for mobile-first optimization.
In 2019, Google officially announced that it would be using mobile-first indexing for its search ranking, giving preference to the mobile version of your site.
In other words, your SEO will depend heavily on the efficacy of your mobile version; if it is lacking, you will be swooshed down.
Can a fast, responsive, mobile-optimized website improve my search rankings?
Yes, a fast, responsive, mobile-optimized website can:
1. Improve your search rankings.
2. Increase your organic traffic.
3. Increase your credibility.
Mobile-first marketing is a philosophy that blends seamlessly with SEO practices.
So your visibility is bright.
4. Mobile-first marketing unleashes the power of personalization.
Today's customers expect brands to know them, understand them, and share the correct message at the exact time and place.
Mobiles yield an incredible wealth of user data—from location consistency and behavior to browsing habits—helping businesses deliver hyper-personalized experiences.
Imagine pushing out a coupon for a limited time to a customer who just arrived at your store's location or retargeting another person who left something in their cart earlier in the day.
The precision marketing promised by mobile-first strategies is real.
It's not invasive; it's all about being intuitive with its approach.
5. Social Media Lives on Mobile
Social media takes place mainly on mobile devices.
Your customers are scrolling and inevitably making purchases over their phones, from Instagram shopping features to TikTok ads and Facebook Marketplace.
Mobile-first marketing ensures that ads, posts, and promotions are concentrated on small screens and fast thumbs.
Mobile optimization of brand messaging makes it easy for people to notice, engage with, and take action on your brand.
6. Mobile-First Marketing Paves the Way for Personalization Power
In the present day, all customers expect that they will understand them as a brand for serving the right message at the right time.
Hyper-personalization remains essential only through a mobile device since it has almost all user metrics: location, behavior, and browsing habits.
For instance, a geofenced flash sale or someone who left something in their cart earlier that day can be remarketed.
Mobile-first strategies within such precision marketing are indeed possible.
This is not intrusive but intuitive.
7. The Future Is Mobile—Are You Ready?
If you don't wise up to mobile-first marketing techniques, it's a potential endgame for your outfit.
Every day, new, lush, and quicker mobile experiences powered by technologies like 5G, augmented reality (AR), and progressive web apps will keep lifecycle stages at a rapid pace, while successes or failures as early adopters will be crucial for brands.
If you want to roadmap your business strategy for the future, engage with Digileap Services. With their smooth nails in creating mobile-friendly marketing plans and driving growth, they help businesses sustain their already-formed foundation in the smartphone era.
