Ten Reasons SLBP is One of the Best Otome Games I’ve Ever Played
I actually wrote this post when I first started playing SLBP five years ago. I wrote it, polished it, but never posted it. I thought I'd post it now since it's the anniversary of this great game. Thank you so so much @voltageslbp for translating this game.
Now... Onto the list!
1) The art is beautiful and polished.
This seems obvious, but I have to list it because about 85-90% of otome games automatically fail for me in this department.
2) Characterizations are consistent.
A lot of otome guys do a personality 180 in the transition from “tsun” into “dere”. In SLBP, not only are the guys vastly different from each other, but they are consistent with themselves.
3) Different routes have different stories.
Some stories have overlapping events, but otherwise not a single story is alike. No route reads like a rehash of another one. The characters MC meets, the places she goes, and the unfolding of the romance… all the elements are distinct.
4) Conflicts have depth.
Relationships are not black-and-white. Love triangles, betrayals, lies... the idea of who is right or wrong is irrelevant because the issues are too complex.
5) Plots are unpredictable.
There’s a reason why so many stories are cliched-- it makes for easy writing. Which is why it’s all the more impressive when a story not only surprises me, but it does so in a way that is believable within the setting.
6) Stories don’t tell– they show.
Tiny details make the story feel real. Feelings are expressed in more than words.
7) MC has agency.
Things happen because MC makes them happen. There are plenty of damsel-in-distress moments and I don’t always agree with her actions, but I love the fact that she owns it.
8) Cooking is not a sexist trope.
Food is more than a convenient plot device to serve as a believable task for a woman in a man’s world. Not only does it play a role in MC’s disguise as a poison taster, but it is also closely tied to her family, her deceased father, her livelihood, her feelings about war, and her relationships with the samurai.
9) Women support each other.
Stories often pit women against one another as an easy way to create drama, especially when men are involved. Which is why it is all the more refreshing to see female relationships portrayed positively.
10) Lessons are presented in a fun way.
Unlike like some games *cough*Hakuouki*cough*, history and cultural lessons don’t feel like you’re reading a textbook.
I’ve spent more money on SLBP than on Star-Crossed Myth, Butler Until Midnight, and Midnight Cinderella… COMBINED. In my opinion, none of Voltage’s other games come close in terms of narrative. Let the record also show that I don’t have a particular affinity for samurai.
It’s just THAT good.
