Quickfire Questions: Yawners.
Spanish bands have been killing it for a long time, it’s become increasingly noticeable in the past few years. Madrid in particular has such a strong underground DIY scene, full of great punk/indie/emo bands. Elena Nieto has been in different projects for years now, previously she was in a garage/shoegaze group called SPPPACE based in Salamanca, Spain before starting her current project Yawners.
We got in touch with Elena for some Quickfire Questions:
Who are you?
Yawners is a duo project that I've been bulding for the past 3 years. I write poppy sometimes punk sometimes emoish songs for guitar and drums and I really enjoy doing it. 'Dizzy' was the first album which was released in 2015 online and in cassette and now we're about to record and tour the second one. The project has had several changes on its drumming lineup during the years, but currently the drummer is Martín Muñoz. The Leicester-based label Punk Fox Records released a 7" single and that was really cool. Other than that, I've worked with Spanish small indie labels like Sello Bramante and Monasterio de Cultura but for the rest of it I do everything DIY by choice. We've toured Spain several times and I've also played shows in Germany.
Where are you from?
Madrid, Spain, but I'm originally from Salamanca and Martín is from Navarra.
Who are your favourite bands and influences?
Right now I'm really really into bands like Pavement, Weezer, Pixies, At The Drive In, Slowdive and also 90s emo chill bands. And many other genres and bands I guess.
youtube
Favourite movies?
For classics I like Dumbo a lot.
4 essential items you have to take on tour...
Sleeping bag, enough tshirts, dry shampoo... Can't think of anything else.
When not writing music or performing, how do you spend your free time?
I work at a label and I'm also doing a masters degree in music business at university here in Madrid, so I don't have much time left for anything else which isn't really a problem for me anyway. Martín is a music producer.
What's the best tv series?
Game of stranger things.
youtube
Where in the world would you like to perform most?
I'd love to tour Japan or the US.
The best gig you've ever been to?
Maybe My Bloody Valentine at OFF Festival Poland 2011.
What new band would you recommend we listen to?
For new Spanish english speaking bands I would recommend you Vulk, they're really cool.
How can people listen to you & support you?
Spotify, iTunes etc. or Bandcamp. If you buy the record on bandcamp or put up a show for us in the UK that'd be really nice.
What do we have to look forward to from you?
New record!!! About to record it.
