I also powerwatched GoT Season 2...
I stopped pretending I was only going to have three things to say about each episode.
2x01
1. Sandor backing Sansa’s “it’s bad luck to kill someone on your birthday” play is SMOOTH. He has her back and I kind of love it????
2. BRAN WARGING! Back when this show cared about magical/fantasy elements that weren’t the dragons.
3. Ugh Theon’s idealism when he offers to go to his family for Robb stabs me right through the heart. (Also he likes calling Robb “Your Grace” A LOT and it makes me cackle and then want to go read fic.)
2x02
1. Cersei asking after Jaime while everyone else looks awkward gives me joy.
2. Gilly!!!! She’s so darling. And so is Sam. And Jon’s “Hello Gilly. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” makes me giggle. What stellar delivery.
3. Theon returning to Pyke is so sad and the castle on Pyke looks SO COOL. (And Yarra keeping a straight face during that horse ride makes me smile just as much as Balon Greyjoy makes me furious.)
4. Bonus: Gendry telling Arya he knows she’s a girl is precious. In fact every second they are on screen are so cute it should be illegal.
5. Bonus bonus: John saw a white walker (Or was that a wight?) Pick up a baby at Craster’s in SEASON FUCKING TWO. How did they so thoroughly fuck up that arc?
2x03
1. This episode was written by Bryan Cogman and directed by Alik Sakharov; which means I was going to love it because Cogman cared a lot about the story and the books, and Sakharov did one of my favorite director commentaries I’ve ever listened to.
2. Brienne’s intro is so great. She is such SERIOUS BUSINESS. Renly genuinely smiling and being happy to have her around :....( he would have been a good king.
3. THEON’S FACE WHEN HE SAYS YOUR LAST BOY JUST LEAVE ME HERE also THAT SHOT OF THEON HIS FACE LIT BY THE BURNING LETTER AND ALL ELSE IN DARKNESS AKDHWISJHSJJSSHSJ CINEMATOGRAPHY AND DIRECTING
4. Bonus: I remember how cute Gethin and Loras’s actor were about Loras and Renly and it gives me warm fuzzies
5. Bonus bonus: Yoren giving Arya the idea that will become her list is a nice moment and A GIRL IS CLEVER telling them Gendry was the dead boy!
2x04: one of the only episodes written by a woman!
1. Ok I love Lannister soldiers playing “who is GOAT?” before Greywind attacks.
2. I’m sorry all the blood just rushed to my eyes because I saw red during the scene with Joffrey having Sansa beaten in front of EVERYONE.
3. Catelyn Stark angrily brandishing a knife at Littlefinger when he’s all “I’ve always loved yoooooouuu” is A Big Mood.
4. Davos “WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST SEE” Seaworth, ladies, gentlemen, and honored folk....
2x05
1. Catelyn keeping her cool and being smart under pressure and keeping Brienne alive is some A++ women helping women stuff.
2. The room with all the latticework where Cersei and Tyrion talk is SO PRETTY. And Tyrion is... actually trying to do right by the city and his family. It’s sad, really.
3. I’d forgotten how much I liked Dagmer for actually helping Theon rather than just making fun of him for a lack of knowledge that isn’t his fault.
4. I remember there was some debate having Arya as Tywin’s cupbearer since it was a pretty major change to the books, but it gave us some great interactions between two super talented actors, and those scenes are... mostly(??) in character and reveal interesting things about them, so I’m on the side of “I love it.”
5. Wow, but the Fist of the First Men is beautiful. And I love Sam’s love of history and how it lets him do world building in an endearing way.
6. Brienne swearing to Catelyn literally just brought tears to my eyes.
2x06
1. Bran’s “Did you hate us the whole time?” to Theon is a moment that will have me in tears every time I hear it. Let’s just pretend I’ve flailed about every upsetting second Theon is on screen and how many awards Alfie deserves and call it a day.
2. Arya’s OH SHIT face when she hears that Littlefinger is about to come into the room... priceless.
3. Sandor Clegane is an Incredibly Useful Person.
4. I know he’s really different from the books, but Xaro Xhoan Daxos is so handsome and INTERESTING in the show, and Qarth is SO PRETTY. Like the clothes the sets... everything.
5. Probably Dyslexic Jaime is one of my favorite little touches the show added, and Tywin’s reaction to it was... very him.
6. Ygritte’s Wildling flirting is... both hilarious and adorable. Jon never knew what hit him.
2x07
1. Dany’s WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS? Iconic, and understandable given that they are three of the rarest things on earth.
2. Shae being willing to knife a girl to keep Sansa’s secret. Friendship goals. Also the following conversation between Cersei and Sansa is nuanced and breaks my heart. Anyone who says Cersei is 100% evil didn’t watch this scene carefully enough.
3. Jaime talking about squiring for Barristan Selmy and how much he loves fighting is a good way to show us that when we can’t be in his head. (Also is this the same fight he was talking about in season 1 in Robert’s office with Barristan? I think it is...)
4. Quaithe was super cool and mysterious and I wish we knew more about her, and Pyatt Pree was CREEPY AS FUCK how did I forget that he killed the 13?
5. Oh right because there’s a Jaime scene next and somehow Brienne makes “Man” the worst insult ever and she is magical.
6. Also that Cersei and Tyrion scene at the end KILLS ME. “I always hoped he’d be like Jaime...” also she voices doubts in the show WAY MORE than book!Cersei does. But... Lena and Peter make it real and complicated.
7. SO MANY VOWS. I still love everything about this. And Jaime trying to press EVERY ONE of Catelyn’s buttons is... amusing as always.
1x08
1. Wherever Robb and Talisa are walking on the way back from the Crag is SO PRETTY I just want to pitch a tent and camp there for a week.
2. Jaime falling off a horse and introducing himself to Brienne like she doesn’t know who he is WHAT AN ASSHOLE I LOVE HIM. This is the beginning of a BEAUTIFUL ROAD TRIP.... Canoe trip?
3. I want to eat a pie with sour cherries like Hot Pie is describing....
4. Bronn and Tyrion trying and failing to pronounce that historian’s name is SO FUNNY to me right now. This show used to be good at balancing little character moments and Serious Business.
5. Jacqen H’Ghar is clearly asking himself how a man got himself into this situation with this strange girl.
6. Robb and Roose Bolton talking about hunting Theon down gives me the stomach lurches.
7. Robb Stark makes ROmanTiC BuT pooR LiFE ChOIceS
2x09: it’s BLACKWATER TIME! Huzzah for ships and sea battles!
1. Cersei getting the poison from Pycelle stops my heart a bit.
2. We get to hear a bit of “The Rains of Castamere” for the first time!
3. Nearly died laughing at Varys’ “I’ve always hated the bells.” ME AND YOU AND THE WHOLE FANDOM, MY FRIEND.
4. I still LOVE THE CLEVERNESS OF TYRION’S PLAN. And the suspense... so good. “There’s only one ship...” Bronn firing the arrow and it hitting the water ALL OF IT.
5. Increasingly drunk Cersei is cruel and tragic and funny and I love her so much my heart doesn’t know what to do.
6. “Awwww pooR Sandor” is a reaction I NEVER thought I’d have about his little moment of paralysis after seeing the burning soldier but we never step in the same river twice and all that, and this time around I def had that reaction. And cheered at “fuck the King” for SANDOR’s sake.
7. I’ve said this before but PODRICK PAYNE FOR SQUIRE OF THE CENTURY
8. oh hai Renly’s ghost and dad Lannister (Daddister?)
2x10: Valar Morghulis, BITCHES
1. Tywin’s horse shitting just outside the throne room because Tywin needed to ride it in for some reason is the line of Lannister Extra (tm) that makes me love this awful family.
2. Show Margaery Tyrell is a devious Player of the Game, and I am enjoying that this time around. (Also I see shades of Anne Boleyn in the Tudors, and that was a performance I enjoyed.)
3. Jaime WATCHES Brienne all the time, like he’s trying to figure her out, and then making up that story on a DIME, and the two of them trying to sell it... FRENEMY GOALS.
4. If people watch the scene with Theon and Maester Luwin and think Theon deserved what he got, they are dumb. My poor identity crisis in kraken from... (Also thank you subtitles for telling me WEX IS THERE? I love him in the books but I’m sure they just used that name without attaching it to someone.)
5. So in the books the House of the Undying was SO CREEPY I had to stop reading because it was too late at night and I was too freaked out and I WAS IN MY 30S! So the way they did it here was just so underwhelming. Yet more proof that the producers didn’t buy into or value the parts of the story that were too “fantasy.” Did Pyatt Pree just... not know dragons breathed fire? Or did he thing they were too little? Idk that seemed a stupid plan he had.
6. I’m fine just crying over Maester Luwin like I didn’t know he died.
7. In the final episode, if we get a shot of the throne room in the red keep looking like Dany’s vision... but with ash instead of snow... at least it’ll be a bit of continuity.
8. That third horn blast still gave me chills on a warm day. Well done, season 2.

The Canucks are Attractive 101
by @markstrom, @feistyteee, @tomiath, @nhlmarkstrom, @huttsybobuttsy, @pyatts, @baercheese
This is the ultimate guide for anyone who ever said the Canucks are not attractive. Say goodbye to the world as you know it.
First of all: Swedes. We all know it, Sweden somehow produces the best looking people on this planet and the Canucks have some of them.
1. Jacob Markstrom
Tumblr media
Our starting goalie is 6â€Č6 and no one can look at him without melting away. His voice and his sweet Swedish accent is the cutest thing you’ll ever hear. Also: eyebrows. Also: eyes. The curved nose needs a shoutout cause it’s adorable. His face is just a masterpiece of art and anyone who doubts this has, well, no idea of art. We also love to mention his tattoos because damn.
2. Anders Nilsson
Tumblr media
Only a fool might think one Swedish goalie is enough. Meet Anders Nilsson, another 6â€Č6 goalie from Sweden. He’s the absolute purest sweetheart, as you can spot a pride flag on both his masks. To represent his gay friends, he says. His hair/beard color combo is different but it works. So. Damn. Well. Plus: the freckles, we love them dearly. Our Swedish goalies support each other at all times, goalie controversy? We don’t know her.
3. Alexander Edler
Tumblr media
He looks like Alexander SkarsgÄrd but on skates. Another sweet Swedish blondie who is also the sweetest dad. His hair always looks on point and he does indeed have a nice tan in his pic. Probably best dressed Canuck, his fashion is on fire. What a man.
4. Loui Eriksson
Tumblr media
A man also known as The Poodle. His fluffy and curly hair make you want to touch it. His look is sometimes very weird and intimidating and some people might think of Louis Vuitton when hearing his name but remember, this kind of fur is completely Canucks branded.
5-6. Henrik and Daniel Sedin
Tumblr media
These are our leading Swedish fish and they do look the same. Some people might say they aren’t really pretty, but hey if you’re into gingers, we got two identical ones for you. We aim to please.
Next: the team dads (Disclaimer: this does not mean they actually have kids). We got plenty of them and they’re mostly cute and obviously good with kids – or still single.
7. Sam Gagner
Tumblr media
Sam Gagner aka Gags is a really smiley. GAGNER WITH SCRUFF IS ICONIC. Also smirk smirk smirk. He likes to wear an all white mouthguard that makes his teeth look weird during the game but that’s okay because he needs to protect his perfect smile at all costs! Bonus: He looks so comforting like you can trust him with your life.
8. Brandon Sutter
Tumblr media
His sarcasm is A+ comedy. He also looks like he could play the role of a guy everyone falls in love with on The Young and the Restless. He’s just very pretty, hair is soft, light scrub and eyebrows are đŸ‘đŸŒ. His eyes are pretty and they are very kind. Also that little smile/smirk is giving me all kinds of feelings ngl.
9. Christopher Tanev
Tumblr media
He most definitely looks better with teeth than without. Tanev is the protective type of guy, he takes pucks to the face for you but mostly for Marky, literally. Long hair don’t care. The soft, dark brown of his eyes can tell that he couldn’t hurt a fly. Bet he takes the ladies out on good dates too.
10. Michael del Zotto
Tumblr media
“Michael Del Zotto does wedding photoshoot, does not actually get married”
“New Vancouver Canucks defenceman Michael Del Zotto was named one of our nation's 25 Most Eligible Bachelors”
“Just showed up, plugged in his iPod without anybody asking, just plugged it in”
Michael del Zotto, more commonly known as DJ MDZ has Italian heritage as you might realize in his name. He’s got curls curls curls. Simple, overall goof who often thinks too highly of himself. Further he’s the absolute kind and friendly standard Canadian.
11. Erik Gudbranson
Tumblr media
YOU CANT TELL ME HE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE GQ COVER!!! Certified male model Erik Gudbranson. God definitely was in a very good mood when he gave him his face. His nose is straight and thin, it just makes you want to tap on it. His smile is very comforting and so is his look. His eyebrows are a statement. This guy knows for sure what a hairstyle is. His sense of fashion is straight out of a fashion magazine. The scrub is just the whipped cream on top, his face is artwork.
12. Markus Granlund
Tumblr media
Looks quiet and serious but has a great sense of humor and arguably some of the best Instagram posts. He’s from Finland so if you want a Finnish player we have all ages. He’s got pretty green eyes.
13. Alex Biega
Tumblr media
Alex Biega is a cute family man. Great with kids, nice, cute smile, rosy cheeks, nice nose. Con: he has no hair, but you don’t see that when he’s wearing a helmet.
Next up: our young guns! They are all handsome af and just overall lovable. They’re fast and speedy and some of them are thicc af. Save the best for last, our personal favorites.
14. Ben Hutton
Tumblr media
1. If you’re ever feeling down, watch a hutton video, he’s happy 24/7 and knows how to have fun. 2. He’s always smiling and his smile can brighten a room. 3. Those dance moves tho. Who knew a “Barbie girl” lip sync could be so hot.
15. Darren Archibald
Tumblr media
He is a wall, he is badass and that makes him so ass. His skin looks very soft and his beard does actually look good, not like Guddys. HIS BEARD IS PERFECT. His eyebrows are straight up goals and look at the dark, kind brown of his eyes. Beautiful.
16. Bo Horvat
Tumblr media
Bo’s face is chiseled like a god. He carries his dog because he doesn’t want to make him walk. He love to go to the beach with his dog but he doesn’t let him swim because he’s “more of a sinker”. His nose is very cute and his body is damn well trained you can just look at him forever. Bo has very soft short hair and he is often amused by Brock’s non-existant smile.
17. Brendan Gaunce
Tumblr media
Baby face Brendan Gaunce has the hairstyle of a guy from elementary school. His lips are so red at all times it’s inhuman. He looks very innocent but it feels like he’s not. He’s just kind of there, no one really knows how or why. Kind of looks like a little baby deer.
18. Tyler Motte
Tumblr media
Fact: There are no good pics of him in the inter webs. Tyler “Applesauce” Motte kinda looks like a college kid from a frat. He’s a very fast skater and his penalty killing is absolutely sexie.
19. Nic Dowd
Tumblr media
Dowdy is just overall an incredibly handsome guy. That hair line and the wavy fluff, can you see it? Beautiful. The cheek bones? Beautiful. He could work as a male model if he wanted but fortunately he plays hockey to bless us with his beautiful face.
20. Troy Stecher
Tumblr media
Stechy has straight up the most adorable dog on this planet. Let’s be real if anyone says Phoebe isn’t their favorite Canuck they’re lying. Kind of an underrated defence man so not a lot of people fully appreciate him. He’s like that rough and tough hockey player that’s also very adorable. His voice is simply great.
21. Brendan Leipsic
Tumblr media
Where do we start here? First of all he calls his dog his son and it’s very adorable. Also his curls. CURLS. They match his face so well and they are absolutely adorable. His lips have a perfect shape and look so soft. Generally his face looks just super soft and kind. Also, have you ever noticed his fashion sense? Definitely one of the best dressed guys on the team. He’s also very aggressive on the ice and he hustles and works very well with our favorite d-man Derrick Pouliot. His nickname is delicious country gravy because he works so well with the chicken strip.
22. Brock Boeser
Tumblr media
Here we go, it’s time for Prince Charming! The hockey community on here already knows how great he is and look I even found a rare footage of his shiny smile. Whenever he smiles he helps the global warming because his smile melts icebergs. Awesome. He always chews on his mouthguard rather than use it and his mom doesn’t like that. Oh, he also went to prom with a girl who has down syndrome and that’s really the type of guy he is. His flow is legendary and often his hair look like actual gold. He leaked his hair routine and apparently he just uses Head and Shoulders shampoo.
23. Nikolay Goldobin
Tumblr media
Goldy is the most adorable Russian puppy you can find anywhere in the NHL. His hair are super fluffy and he doesn’t know how to wear a hat but that only makes him look even more adorable. His nose is so small and round it’s absolute gold! Don’t even get me started on his eyebrows because they are flawless! He got the most innocent and sweet smile out there, he always seems happy. You want to squeeze his cheeks and generally just hug him. It seems like he gives nice hugs.
24. Sven BĂ€rtschi
Tumblr media
@baercheese is here to confess her love: “My cute little Swiss boy ♄ my forever favourite & definitely underrated in the looks department & as a hockey player. His nose might not be straight but it’s still cute (I will fight you if you disagree) and his hair is always slicked back to perfectionđŸ‘ŒđŸ» If you haven’t heard him talk you need to because he has a sight accent and it’s my favourite thing in the entire world 😍 He’s also a known dog lover & has a dog named Bear (named after himself basically), what’s not to love?”
25. Derrick Pouliot
Tumblr media
Derrick Pouliot, also commonly known as Poulet, chicken strip and super strip is our cutest chubby teddy defenseman and we all know it. He grew up in the middle of nowhere in Saskatchewan and not a lot of people got to appreciate his beauty so far. His hair are the pure fluff and make you just want to run your hands through it. His face looks so soft, his eyes are warm and you just want to squeeze his cheeks ngl. Listen to his voice once and you never want to listen to something else ever again. He is not really tall and his hockey gear looks kind of too big for him, the others love to pat his head. Sometimes his hair get a little curly and it’s just the cutest thing ever. Just by looking at him you can tell that he gives the best and softest hugs ever and he makes you feel comfortable at all times. He is really silent and not outgoing, he needs a lot of time to feel comfortable with new people but that’s totally okay. He’s super cute with kids and just overall totally lovely and kind. A real Canadian.
26. Jake Virtanen
Tumblr media
Jake Virtanen is the ultimate snack. He’s half Canadian, half Finnish and 100% babe. The man can skate. Fast. Right into my heart. To quote the great philosopher of our time, Taylor Swift, he’s so gorgeous, it actually hurts. He has the cutest dance moves and the most precious smile. When he does that little slanted smile, I swoon, you swoon, we swoon. Bonus: When he works hard his face turns red and it’s adorable lmao.

CANTLON: WOLF PACK OFF-SEASON VOLUME 13
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - There has been much activity in the world of the NHL and AHL, especially for the heart of the summer. PLAYER AND COACHING MOVEMENT Former Hartford Wolf Pack and New York Ranger, Marc Savard, who has been doing work as a skills development coach with Petersborough (OHL) was hired as an Assistant Coach by the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues. Ex-Sound Tiger, Richard Seeley, after the Manchester Monarchs (ECHL), folded following the season, is now the GM of the Ontario Reign. The AHL roster shuffle continues at a slower pace than at the beginning of the month but remains chugging along. Eric Condra heads from Texas to Colorado. Ian McCoshen gets a one-year, two-way deal with Springfield/Florida of $250K-AHL/$700K-NHL and defenseman Julien Melchiori leaves Springfield for Binghamton. Melchiori, is a much younger cousin to former Nighthawk, Daryl Evans, and former Springfield Indian, Vic Venasky. Tyler Gaudet leaves Milwaukee for Toronto Marlies for a one-year, one-way, $700K deal. Cavan Fitzgerald moves from San Jose to Charlotte. Matt Moulson, with almost a 1,000 NHL games, signs an AHL deal with the Hershey Bears. Max McCormick gets a one-year, two-way deal with Charlotte/Carolina paying $100K-AHL/$700K-NHL after splitting last season with Belleville/Colorado. Four more AHL’ers head off to Europe. Ex-Pack Tom Pyatt, who split last season with Utica/Ottawa, signs with Skelleftea AIK (Sweden-SHL). Ex-Pack defenseman, Chris Summers, departs the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins to join his good friend, and ex-Pack, Chris Brown with the Nuremberg Ice Tigers (Germany-DEL) on a two-year contract. He will still be wearing number 55 on his jersey. Kerby Rychel goes from Stockton to Orebro HK (Sweden-SHL). Shane Hanna of Texas heads off to Rungsted IK (Denmark-DHL). Those make 61 AHL’ers who have signed off to Europe or Asia for next season. Hampus Gustafsson of Hershey is on a tryout with Rogle BK (Sweden-SHL). Ex-Pack, Paul Crowder, re-signs with the Fife Flyers (Scotland-EIHL) for the fall and winter hockey season while he is presently playing with the Sydney Ice Dogs (Australia-AIHL). Crowder is their third-leading scorer after playing 12 games (11g-29a-40pts) as the team heads into the final month of the regular season. Crowder's brother Tim is tied for the team lead at 50 points and is third in AIHL scoring of the short season league. Goalie, Jackson Whistle, the nephew of ex-Nighthawk, Rob Whisle, leaves Sheffield (England-EIHL) for Nottingham (England-EIHL) Defenseman Joesph Masonius, a former UCONN Husky signs with Reading (ECHL). He played one game in Wheeling (ECHL) and 12 with now-defunct Manchester (ECHL) last year. Philippe Hudon (Choate Prep) signs an ECHL one-year deal with the Florida Everblades. After finishing his Canadian collegiate career with Concordia University (OUAA) in Montreal, the Hudson, Quebec native played 14 games with Florida and three games with Laval. Karl El-Mir, also from Montreal area, the former UCONN Husky (HE), signs with Indy (ECHL) for next year. Jake Cliffords of Arizona St. (Division 1-Independent) signs with Tulsa (ECHL) and a pair of Division III players sign. Zach Borsoi of Utica College (UCHC) signs with Adirondack (ECHL) while Matt Lippa of Manhattanville College (UCHC) puts his name on a contract with Idaho (ECHL). Three more collegians sign pro deals. Freddy Gerard from Ohio State (Big 10) signs with Idaho (ECHL). Timo Kocer departs Division 3 Finlandia University (NCHA) for his native Slovenia to play for HDD Jesenice (AlpsHL). Peter Crinella of Holy Cross (AHA) signs a deal with Wichita (ECHL) making 184 players from Division I to sign North American pro deals, 22 from Division III, 49 sign European deals, making an overall count of 247 collegians to sign pro deals. Former Quinnipiac Bobcat, and briefly a Sound Tiger defenseman, Mike Dalhuisen, a Dutch-native, leaves EC Bad Nauheim (Germany DEL-2) and signs with HK Dukla Michalovce (Slovakia-SLEL). Travis Culhane, the son of ex-Whaler, Jim Culhane, moves from Western Michigan (NCHC) to Colorado College (NCHC) in the same capacity as Director of Hockey Operations. Besides AHL President Dave Andrews, another hockey honcho will step down following the 2019-20 season. Joe Bertagna, the commissioner of Hockey East after 23 years at the helm will leave the scene, not by his own choice, but the conference directors elected not to renew his contract. He also spent 13 years as the head man for the ECAC before heading up Hockey East in 1997. Bertagna’s name is all over college hockey in the Northeast. Beside commissioning two college conferences, he is an accomplished author of five books on goaltending and was twice the goalie coach for the Boston Bruins (1985-1991 & 1994-95) as well as the 1991 Canada Cup US entry, and the 1994 US Olympic team, that played in Lillehammer, Norway. He was the pioneer in making women’s hockey a Division I sport when he became Harvard’s first head coach of women’s hockey (1977-1979) and actively promoted and developed that side of the college hockey equation. He is already in the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame and the ECAC Hall of Fame. He played from 1970-1973 at Harvard under three big names of collegiate history in Ralph “Cooney” Weiland, Billy Cleary, and the late, Tim Taylor of Yale, who was an assistant at Harvard. Bertagna, being a starter his last two years, was in an era where freshmen were not allowed to play varsity sports. He played professionally for two years with SG Cortina (Italy-IHL) and Milwaukee (USHL) then a senior hockey league not in its present junior format. UCONN adds another recruit for this fall’s campaign. Forward Jonny Mulera from the Boston Jr. Bruins (NCDC) commits after playing 49 games and scoring 27 goals, getting 27 assists (54 points). The team’s Director of Player Development is ex-Pack, Bobby Butler. The Yale University Bulldogs (ECACHL) snagged another son of a former NHL’er, Will Dineen, the son of Hartford Whaler great, Kevin Dineen, has made a commitment to Yale for 2020-21. He played this past season for the Chicago Mission U-16 (HPHL) and was drafted by two different US junior leagues this spring. He was taken first taken by Omaha Lancers (USHL) 7th round 98th overall then taken by the Odessa (TX) Jackalopes (NAHL).in the 7th round 162nd overall. Now with the commit to Yale looks more than likely he will be in the USHL come the fall. His father Kevin, as previously mentioned, just signed to be the head coach in San Diego (AHL). He is the younger of the Dineens. Two of his uncles, Peter and Shawn, played for the New Haven Nighthawks, and his other uncle, Jerry Dineen, is the Rangers video coach. Two college graduate transfers are heading to Boston University (HE) in the fall. Wilton CT native, goaltender Sam Tucker, who played his prep school hockey at Choate, takes his Yale degree and four years of collegiate hockey to the Terriers. Also joining him from the ECACHL conference is Alex Brink of Brown University taking the 50-minute trip up I-95  to BU’s campus. Ex-Pack, Jeff Finley, is changing scouting addresses. He leaves Detroit, where he was the Chief of Amateur scouting, to go Winnipeg to replace the retiring Marcel Comeau, a one time New Haven Nighthawks head coach. Need some cool thoughts during the hot days of summer? Here is a superb hockey story to keep you cool and get to read about hockey at the southernmost point in the world; HERE The NHL and college hockey should help in the development of hockey here. Dominic Turgeon, nephew of ex-Whaler Sylvain signed a new one year two-way deal with Grand Rapids for a slight AHL increase from $67,500K to $80K and the NHL money is up from $650K to $750K-NHL). Palmetto Brewing and Catawba Brewing with owner Billy Pyatt
Palmetto Brewing is South Carolina's oldest brewery
The history of Palmetto Brewing dates back to the end of Prohibition. In its current life, Palmetto is 26-years old, making it South Carolina's oldest operating brewery.  Billy Pyatt, founder of Asheville's Catawba Brewing purchased Palmetto in 2017.  They've got a new look and some new beers, but still hold on to their traditions.
Pyatt joined us from his sound-proof recording studio (his car) while taking a break from building out a new beer cooler.  We talk about the recent update to Palmetto's branding, their new beers, the South Carolina beer scene, and what else we should do for a weekend in Charleston.
Palmetto may have a few years on Catawba but the North Carolina brewery will celebrate their 20th anniversary this July.  As part of the celebration, they'll launch three new beers.  We tried to get Pyatt to spill the beans on exactly what those would be, but he said he has to keep that under wraps for now.  While sipping some of their coffee blonde ale (Evening Joe) Brian had to get in some coffee chat and we find out about Catawba's best-selling beer.
Craft Beer News
Boston Beer Co. merges with Dogfish Head | The big story this week was the merger of Boston Beer Co., maker of Sam Adams, and Dogfish Head.  Since Pyatt had experience merging two breweries we took the opportunity to get his opinion on the pros and cons of this massive merger.

Ramblings: Prospects and the Combine; Nielsen, Sutter, Landeskog, Schmaltz, and More – June 4
Over at Dobber Prospects, Cam Robinson compared centres available in the 2018 Entry Draft. This draft, as Cam notes, is littered with high-end wingers and defencemen, particularly at the very top. For those in dynasty leagues that may have rookie drafts in the next month or so, it’s worth looking at Cam’s centres comparison. Despite the lack of truly high-end centres we’ve seen come to through the draft over the last few years, that doesn’t mean they should be ignored entirely. In fact, it may make for a good buying opportunity in rookie drafts as everyone else focuses on wingers and defencemen.
This was the continuation of a series from Cam and Part 1 can be found here.
*
Speaking of prospects, there was a really good post from Mitch Brown at The Athletic a few days ago discussing his tracking project for the Canadian Hockey League. For those familiar with work by people like Ryan Stimson and Corey Sznajder, this will look and feel familiar to you.
One thing, as Mr. Brown notes, is that the sample is limited, so do not take it as gospel. But it is a fascinating way to continue scouting prospects.
*
One more thing from The Athletic.
Tyler Dellow looked at the biggest black hole lines from a goal differential perspective this year. This has obvious fantasy implications, particularly for those playing daily fantasy. Reading the section on the third line from Ottawa (for me, some mix of Pageau, Pyatt, Hoffman, and Smith came to mind) made me laugh. They were frequently used against opposing top lines when Ottawa was at home and they were a favourite to pick on from a daily fantasy perspective. Not only did they get crushed by goal differential, they were obliterated by shot share as well. It was something to behold.
*
The NHL held their combine over the weekend. I don’t know how much this could influence a fantasy owner’s point of view on a player. Remember when Casey Mittelstadt couldn’t do a pull-up? Does anyone in dynasty leagues want to trade him away because he couldn’t do a pull-up? I get why for some scouts they will take some of this information in when formulating a final opinion prior to the draft but I don’t know why fantasy owners would be interested at all. Maybe I’m in the minority here.
*
A lot of what has been written in these Ramblings over the last month or so has been discussing changes in the NHL. Be it shot rates, goal rates, save percentages, power-plays, ice time allocation, or a bevy of other issues, we’re trying to prepare fantasy owners as best we can for a game that is changing basically every season.
To get back into those topics a little bit, let’s talk power play ice time. All data from Natural Stat Trick.
Play fantasy hockey long enough and the realization quickly sets in that ice time with the man advantage is crucial to production. Not only are PPGs and PPPs often their own categories in roto leagues, but they’re necessities for high-end production. In 2017-18, there were 21 players with at least 80 total points and none had fewer than 20 come from the power play. Of the 36 players with at least 70 points, only seven had fewer than 20 and all had more than 10. To get league-winning production, power-play time (and lots of it) is nearly a necessity.
With that in mind, it’s worth looking at forwards who garnered a lot more ice time on the power play in 2017-18 compared to 2016-17. To be considered, a forward must have played at least one game in both seasons, and managed power play TOI. Some of these are obvious; Mathew Barzal leads everyone in PP TOI difference because he played two games in 2016-17 while William Karlsson went from almost no PP time in Columbus to a lot in Vegas. Some guys had a change in situation (team) like Nail Yakupov. There are others, though, that could point to either a breakout, or a new norm in terms of production.
Here are the top-20 increased PP TOI per game among forwards:
Some notes on the guys who stuck out to me.
Jason Zucker
The breakout we’ve been waiting for from Zucker finally came and the power play had a lot to do with it. Zucker amassed 16 power-play points, which doesn’t sound like a lot, until you realize had six (!) power-play points in his first 248 games with the Wild. He’s an RFA and is deserving of a healthy raise over the two-year, $2M AAV contract he just finished.
One issue is just whether there’s growth to be had or not. Minnesota is one of the teams that still splits its two PP units evenly – first through sixth in PP TOI per game among Wild forwards was separated by 18 seconds – so unless something changes with the coaching staff, it’s hard to see him racking up more PP points. If he’s back with the Wild, though, in this same role, I wouldn’t anticipate much of a decline in production.
ïżœïżœ Nick Schmaltz
Back in late February, I wrote about how good of a season Schmaltz was having, all things considered. It is recommended to go back and read that.
Going forward, Schmaltz certainly seemed to have earned the second-line centre role behind Jonathan Toews. Skating with Patrick Kane boosted his five-on-five ice time from his rookie year but a huge chunk of the jump also came from the power play; he finished fourth among their forwards in PP TOI per game.
To my eyes and by the numbers, Schmaltz looks like a good playmaker right now, and that should only improve for the 22-year old. The lack of shots means the across-the-board production may not be there, but he seems in line to have season like Mikko Koivu has had in recent season. Expect somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 goals and 35 assists.
  Kevin Fiala
Here at Dobber Hockey, we’ve probably written enough on Fiala over the last 18 months to fill a book. There’s not much need to go into more depth here other than to see keep believing, Dobber heads. That breakout is coming.
  Micheal Ferland
Ferland saw a career year with 21 goals and 20 assists, career highs in both stats. Part of the jump in goals came from his power-play usage in that he tripled his career output to that point in PPGs with six (he had three for his career before 2017-18). Maybe he stays on the top line under the new coaching regime, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the power play. It was a sore spot for the team most of the season and needs to be better next year. Do they just eschew the second unit completely? Does Ferland finish in the top-6 mix for forwards PP TOI again? Open-ended questions with a new head coach in town.
  Gabriel Landeskog
The top-end Avs forwards all saw a jump with the team drawing more penalties (they led the league in power-play opportunities), being on a heavily-used top unit, and the trade of Matt Duchene. Landeskog, though, saw the biggest jump of all of them which bodes well for next year. There is a young crop of forwards coming up that might put some pressure on but it’s hard to see him being moved off the top unit at any point unless there’s a severe decline, which shouldn’t be anticipated. After a brutal 2016-17 season, he was back to the roto monster he can be, and that looks to be the case for the near-future.
Now, to the other end of the spectrum, the guys forwards with the biggest declines in PP TOI:
Let’s dig in.
  Brandon Sutter
Vancouver was basically a four-forward power play team for the majority of the season. It was the Sedin twins with Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser, unless one of them was injured, in which case guys like Sam Gagner, Sven Baertschi, or Thomas Vanek were used. They shuffled in and out a bit but that was generally the case. That left Sutter out of the mix.
With the Sedins gone and Vanek traded (do they bring him back?), there may be a spot for Sutter on the top power-play unit. Do they give it to him? That’s another question. He’s never been a power-play producer so maybe he’s left off.
  Frans Nielsen
One reason Nielsen’s production cratered to the lowest point of any season in which he’s played 60 games? The power play. Does anyone realize he was given 52 seconds of ice time with the man advantage per game. That’s 33 seconds fewer than Tyler Bertuzzi. He had 15 power-play points in his first season with Detroit, a total which fell to seven in 2017-18.
The Detroit PP was pretty bad, ranking 28th in shots generated and 23rd in goals per 60 minutes. Mike Green is presumably gone as an unrestricted free agent. Who can step up as the PP QB? Trevor Daley? Do they keep going to Niklas Kronwall? It’s not certain that the Red Wings PP will improve and whether Nielsen will get his PP TOI back. At this point, he doesn’t seem draftable in 12-team leagues.
  Ryan Kesler
Injuries derailed his entire season and it looks like they might derail all of 2018-19 as well. Even when he was in the lineup, the coveted top PP spot was Adam Henrique’s, not Kesler’s. Even if he’s healthy to start the year, it’s hard to see the Ducks changing much with their power play personnel. Without that power-play TOI, the 50-point seasons of the past are over and done with.
  Troy Brouwer
Predictably, the Troy Brouwer contract has been a complete disaster and shows no signs of getting better. The hope for fantasy owners is that maybe he could be some sort of net-front presence on the power play which would see him return to the fantasy production levels he enjoyed in Washington.
That was not the case.
Does a new coaching regime see something in him that the previous one didn’t? It doesn’t seem likely. With his overall time disappearing, even his once-stout hit totals are in severe decline. Even in leagues counting hits, it’s hard to rely on him as a fantasy option moving forward.
