Maybe this is wishful thinking rather than a potential canon thing, but I think Sanemi was aware of Tanjiro’s presence and that he would be able to stop him from blinding Genya.

Like, I honestly don’t think Sanemi would’ve gone through with it or even tried to blind his brother if Tanjiro wasn’t there. Even if Sanemi doesn’t like Tanjiro or accept him, he acknowledge his strength and heart.

So yeah,

I personally think that Sanemi never truly intended to blind Genya. I think he knew exactly how it would play out and it happened just as he wanted it to.

Now he made sure to not only scare his little brother away, but confirm that Genya had friends and people to rely on when he can’t be there for him.

Slight spoilers ahead(?) nah it’s spoilers;

But Tanjiro said later that he didn’t smell any hatred or malicious intents from Sanemi back then. And according to the light novel about Sanemi and Masachika he reveals just how much he loves and cares for his brother.

So call me delulu or whatever, but that’s just me. Sanemi is an asshole (I still love him), he’s terrible at showing his love and made literally the worst possible choices when it came to Genya, BUT HE HAS A GOOD HEART!!

This event is meant to be focused solely on Sanemi and Genya, background characters and ships are valid and allowed, but the main focus of the work is how you see and interpret the prompts and their relationship. My favorite troupe in any media is tragic siblings. Like, fuck yeah, give me those fucked up siblings who still love each other despite all the pain. Give me those siblings who would do anything for the other, even if it means hurting them in the process. Give me older siblings who are almost like parents but don't know shit about raising kids because they themself are a child, but try their hardest anyway.
